I've had some really awful experiences with mechanics since I moved to the area 18 months ago. I've tried Dobbin Auto Repair, an Exxon in Columbia, AAA in Laurel, and two dealerships -- all of which were the worst experiences I've ever had with mechanics. River Hill Sunoco got my car running better than it has in over a year, and I finally feel safe on the road again. They treated me with respect and patiently listened to the list of issues I was experiencing. In spite of the pecuniary wealth of Clarksville, the area is generally destitute when it comes to automotive knowledge. The River Hill Sunoco preys on this ignorance. Late one night, my girlfriend got a flat tire. As I have done dozens, if not hundreds, of times in my life, I removed the old wheel/tire and put on the spare using nothing more than a scissors jack and lug wrench. As I replaced the lug nuts, I threaded them and tightened by hand before using the lug wrench for one last fastening. As it turned out, there was a hole in the sidewall of the old tire, so Sunoco ordered a new tire that was expected to arrive in a few days. In order for us to commute to Baltimore on the spare, "John" the technician tightened up the lug nuts. "John" did so with an air impact wrench (also known as an air hammer, pneumatic impact wrench, etc). A few days later, we took the car back for Sunoco to install the new tire. This time, the Sunoco technician had difficulty removing one of the lug nuts, and one of the studs snapped. After replacing the tire, Sunoco capped the broken stud and offered to replace it at a cost of approximately $100. Through an apparent miscommunication, Sunoco never ordered the new stud, so we took the car elsewhere for repair. At the other garage, my mechanic had to use a breaker bar to remove two of the lug nuts because Sunoco had over-tightened them (see attached photo showing metal shavings from the other over-tightened lug nuts next to the broken stud). Due to the numerous damaged studs, we replaced the entire wheel hub assembly. Naturally, this cost more and caused major inconvenience as the car could not be driven for several days. An objective analysis of the facts leads inescapably to the conclusion that Sunoco over-tightened the lug nuts, causing the catastrophic failure (breaking) of one stud and the effective destruction of two others. When the first stud snapped, Sunoco did not mention any issue with any of the other lugs or studs. The vehicle was entirely within the control of Sunoco, and it was Sunoco that once again tightened the lugs after they replaced the tire. The thing speaks for itself: only Sunoco could have caused the damage to the second and third studs, and the circumstances strongly suggest Sunoco's fault for the first. Through its manager, Adam, Sunoco has enumerated several excuses to absolve itself. First, Sunoco alleged that I "cross-threaded" the lug nuts when I put on the spare. I reiterate that I hand-tightened the lug nuts, and this excuse does not account for the destruction of the second and third studs, which happened after Sunoco replaced the tire. When confronted with the issue of the additional lug nuts' destruction, Sunoco then blamed me for not making the lug nuts tight enough after the tire change and alleged the wheel was "like a loose tooth" when it arrived at Sunoco (which, of course, undercuts its "cross-threaded" theory). Admittedly, I did not have a torque wrench, but to think the lug nuts had come loose on the short drive to Sunoco strains credulity. If it were true, why then did Sunoco not note damage to the other studs at that point? Oddly, Adam denied knowledge of any technician named "John" employed at Sunoco, though he admitted a technician with a similar sounding name does work there (other social media posts about the River Hill Sunoco, e.g. Anglie's List, mention an employee named "John."). Just so there is no confusion, "John" is the technician who has family in the south of France, though I'm sure Adam knew exactly who I was referencing. read more

The station has fairly priced gas so if I'm in Clarksville and need it I go here. They have a drive thru car wash that does a decent job. I'd avoid bringing a vehicle in for work if I were you. I've seen them tighten bolts witb a non torqued set air gun. They work fast not right. They should use torque sticks or a torque wrench. read more

It is so refreshing to have a service manager and team of skilled mechanics I can trust. There is no nickel-and-dime charging and never an attempt to find things wrong that I didn't come in for. At my most recent visit (to have a catalytic converter shield installed), the estimate I was quoted was 33% below my car dealership's quote. Of course, I chose River Hill Sunoco to do the work. When it was time to pay my bill, I was informed that the mechanic had an easier than expected time doing the job and I ended up paying half of what I had been told it would cost (a 67% savings compared to the car dealership). The free air for tires keeps me coming back. I know it costs them money to maintain this for customers, but usually when I'm there I also fill up. I have a thing about paying for air - so I greatly appreciate this free service. Also, Adam and the whole service staff are always very friendly and helpful. I can't count the number of times they've repaired a punctured tire on the spot or looked under the hood or car to attempt to identify a problem. Glad they are in the neighborhood! read more

I like to use automatic soft touch car washes because of their convenience. There are not any around my area. River Hill has a very nice wash. They are hard to find. I live in Bethesda but I will plan a trip to use this wash if I can when I go to visit family in Glen Burnie. It is a good idea to call them before you go use the wash because if the temperature is below freezing, they will close it and it can be very busy sometimes. The staff have always been very nice and professional over the phone to me. The property is very clean and organized, which is important to me. Also remember that if you purchase a wash it is good for 60 days from the date you purchased it, keep the receipt with the wash code and you can go back at a later time if it is too busy or if it is closed. Do not take your car in if you have a serious problem. I have a VW and the check engine light was flashing. The engine was struggling and would struggle when I tried to start it. I took it in, and the repair cost thousands of dollars. They kept it for two days. When I picked it up, it took two tries to start, and as soon as I started driving it, the check engine light came on. Repeat this story FOUR times (I keep taking it back in and they keep assuring me that this time they have fixed it.) Three weeks later, my car still struggling to start and the check engine light is consistently on. The picture here is each of the rings they have put on my keychain, while they charge me crazy amounts of money to not fix the problem. Adam very politely assures me every time that they have fixed the problem. I now will ask for a refund and will take the car elsewhere. Wish me luck. (The last time I went there, about ten years ago, they actually dropped my truck off of the lift. Thought I would give them another chance based on all of the positive reviews here and on Nextdoor. One of my favorite gas stations. Prices are always competitively low and the service inside is excellent! Super friendly young people always put a smile on my face. Also, love the free air and I just used the car wash for the first time today. My kids and I loved it! Very thorough although I'm reserving two stars since the car wash line took a VERY long time. My windows were still a bit dirty as well and I ordered the RainX for $11. Next time just keep it to a basic wash and save myself three bucks. I am updating this review from earlier today. Removing yet another star... So I left the gas station after the wash and went to run errands. By the time I got home I realized the car was still very dirty after it dried so I went back to let them know. Mind you, this was on a 70 degree day in December so nothing I'm the atmosphere that would make my car dirty after I left. Anyhow, the guy at the counter said there was nothing he could do, not even a refund even though I paid cash at the machine. Unbelievable! I reiterated that I normally have no problem when I am here but today was different. After some back and forth he reluctantly gave me a code for yet another car wash (this time a $10 one) since he said the RainX coating they use seals in whatever was on my car initially. So essentially the RAIN-X WILL SEAL THE DIRT ON YOUR CAR BEFORE WASHING IT OFF. Very very DUMB. I think I'll just sick to getting gas and air. If you have the time and they're open, go to Clarksville Car Wash across the street (near the Roots market), they are WAYYYYY better. Otherwise, let the rain wash it, it'd certainly be better than the River Hill Sunoco. read more

Nice mini-mart. Well-stocked, tidy coffee station with a big selection of flavored creamers. At 9:45pm, not all of the coffees were available ... the staff cheerfully offered to brew the coffee of my choice. The bathroom was freshly mopped and spotless. Gas prices are reasonable, lots of pumps, easy in & out. Air for your tires is free. It's a nice gas station. read more

They are the most modest/friendly service folks I have ever met in DMV region, I can put it that way. Never a nerve-wracking feel whenever I stepped into the place for car service, no need to worry being BSed. I still remember couple of years ago, they always had this special - synthetic blend oil change plus tire rotation for $12.95, and I was surprised that that was exactly what was charged, nothing sketchy in the "fine print", no added on fee and such. I was genuinely impressed. Now I moved further to the east and they might not be the closest place for me, but whenever I had some problem that I want to get an honest opinion, you know what, I want to call them. Couple of month ago, I had a mysterious LF tire leak, Adam inspected the tire with me inch by inch, although coz of lacking of equipment, they wasn't able to locate this bead area leak, they were very honest, telling me to go to a tire place with a water tub for the ultimate check up. Always offered free drink/coffee while sitting in the waiting area too. It's been a completely different feel compared to going to a dealership or other independent garage I have been to in this region. read more

The gas station here has the lowest gas prices in the area. But the greatest thing about this place is the little auto repair shop there - the young men working there are really great. It's probably because of them that this shop is also one of the few in the area (the only one I know) which provides FREE air to inflate your tires.. These guys are by far the most honest and helpful, hard working car service professionals I've met. They never try to push unneeded repairs or replacements. They try to cover everything we ever needed for the maintenance or repair of our 2 cars. I first met them a few years ago when I purchased online a replacement part for my car which I couldn't install myself and this was the only auto repair shop in the area which simply agreed to install the part for me *without* forcing me to also buy the part from them! And they installed it quickly and simply charged me for some standard labor time -- the cost per hour is clearly displayed there in their shop. read more

I got my tires done here and I recently had a slow leak in one of my tires. They told me to come in anytime to check it out. I came in the next day and they took care of it right away! It was fixed in less than 10 mins. Turns out there was a small nail in the tire with the slow leak! read more

Service manager Adam is a great guy to work with. When my Honda Ody van stalled nearby, he helped me, a deaf person, get it towed and notify my wife. He even arranged a technician to drive me home. We let Adam do the regular services on our cars. The prices are very reasonable. Easy to schedule services and communicate via email and phone. Have had my car serviced here twice (once to replace a headlight, another time for brakes and new spark plugs.) Was very impressed with the honesty of the mechanics, the price of the repairs (they didn't make me pay a labor charge to replace the headlight bulb - whereas another service center wanted $50 for 5 minutes of work!), and the convenience of their drop-off/pick-up hours. My only complaint was that they didn't let me know when my car was ready - a phone call to tell me it was done would have been great. I will definitely try them again for service, though! read more
