I used to LOVE coming to River Oaks Donuts. However, over the past several months, it seems that their demand has increased but their supply has greatly decreased. The last 7 or 8 times that I've gone there after 10am, there has been NOTHING left, except for reject donuts and spinach and feta kolaches. Doesn't matter if you go on the weekend or a weekday, it seems like you have to get there at 8am or you get nothing. It doesn't help that if you show up after 10am, they're already cleaning up the place and look like they're in the middle of closing. When I mentioned something about the lack of food, they told me to just "call ahead and we'll hold whatever kolaches you'd like"... yeah that doesn't make much sense if you're already out of kolaches by the time I open my eyes in the morning. Why do you stay open until 1pm if you don't have any food to sell? Either close earlier or make more food, because I am SO tired of being disappointed every single time I go there. read more

I'm not a donut person, but I was getting some for the office. The service here was outstanding. The donuts looked amazing, as well. They were huge and there were so many different options than you'd find at any other donut shop. They gave me the cutest crown and made sure that I was in and out as quick as possible. I over paid because I told the guy at the cash register the wrong type of donuts I had gotten. I didn't mind as I was in a hurry and it wasn't too much over. But they didn't let me leave it like that, they send me on my way with 3 extra donuts for the difference! I'll be back for sure! read more

I love this place and I go frequently to get 2-3 dozen at a time for the office staff. But, I always get the same girl behind the counter, with no attitude, and soooo slow!! No smiles, and no small talk. Not the attitude that you want to see at a donut shop at 7:30 am.. She would just throw the donuts in a box, no napkins, and no bag, not a "thank you" or zero "up-selling". I know is just donuts, but the experience is what makes customers come back. We have been regulars at River Oaks Donuts for about 2 years - we go every Sunday after church for a treat. Generally, the employees have great customer service and good attitudes. Lately, the supply has been really low. They seem to be offering a lot less items than they have in the past. The kolaches are good, but nothing too adventurous. The sausage and cheese, spinach and feta, and ham and cheese are favorites. The donuts, however, are definitely more adventurous. I've had everything from chocolate cookies and cream (chocolate donut with chocolate icing topped with oreo crumble) to fruity pebbles, peanut butter chocolate, caramel bacon, lemon blueberry cake style, and the list goes on. They are all delicious, but beware that they are very generous with icing on iced donuts. All in all, definitely stop by for a treat! read more

I've been to many a donut place in Houston and ROD is by far my favorite. Unlike Shipleys which basically transports you back to the 70s every time you walk in, ROD is clean, well-lit and has friendly staff. Unlike others, RODs donuts are a little crispy/crunchy as they should be and hold together very well. Try eating a cake donut from Dunkin or Shipleys. It'll crumble In your hands. I wanted to get some breakfast since I was around the area. I was disappointed that they discontinued the egg and cheese kolaches but still had it on the menu. The potato, egg, and cheese was really good. The potato was mixed well with the egg and cheese that there was no chunk. I almost couldn't tell it was potatoes. They run out of options quite early and are overpriced compared to other donuts shops in the area, probably because they have the trendy ~~River Oaks vibes~~ going on. Had no Kolaches except for sausage and cheese and the cake donut was abysmal (dry, hard, flavorless). Only upside: flavors of donut holes and pretty good coffee. Recommend you all go check out Christy's donuts on Montrose and W Gray only a few miles over for much cheaper donuts and kolaches with a plethora of options. read more

All I can say is amazing and I didn't even eat their donuts. My friend I came in on a Saturday to have their gluten free donuts. Unfortunately they were all sold out. I emailed the staff to save some from me on Tuesday to surprise her. She has not had a donut in years due to her allergies. The staff was very prompt in reply back to me and kept me informed. Luckily I got to try one of the mocha filled donut hole which was what made me come back the second time. It was a diff experience. So, I have been sitting on this review for a while. I am torn between writing about the kolaches and the service. The kolaches are good. The sausage is much better than your average kolache. It is not greasy at all and the breading around it was very flavorful. That being said I am not sure it was worth the bad service. The service I am writing about had nothing to do with the counter girl who I thought was very nice. It has to do with the tennis skirt wearing woman that came into the shop while I was attempting to order. I am not sure if she is an owner or another employee. She entered the shop and bumped into me while trying to get behind the counter. She then stepped between myself and the counter girl and started talking completely interrupting us. She then grabbed a box and started pulling inventory for herself. She had not apologized for bumping in to me, for interrupting us and she did not wash her hands before she started getting her own stuff off of the shelves. I stopped here the other day with the gf. I was excited to try their kolaches as I had read good things about them on Yelp. Upon entering we were promptly greeted, and the staff was super friendly. The place looked very clean. We started asking what they had as far as kolaches went, and the woman behind the counter was describing what they still had. That is when things took a hard left turn. A woman in workout clothes walked in and went behind the counter. She obviously was somehow associated with the store. She interrupted and started asking the woman helping us questions. It was an extremely rude interruption. No apology; just focused on herself. She paid no attention to the customers that were there, and it made me just want to walk out. Workout clothes then pulled another smooth move, and grabbed a box for donuts. She started picking out donuts and placing them in the box. After that she took off for the back of the store. At no time did she wash her hands or put gloves on. Gross. Sweaty hand donuts. We ordered two kolaches and two cups of coffee. The kolaches were microwaved. The coffee was good, and the kolaches were decent. They were still cold when we ate them so I have a hard time getting excited about them. They were not greasy as is common with kolaches. The Good: The donuts and cronuts are AMAZING! The filling for the filled donuts is surprisingly light and airy. The Nutella-filled cronuts positively drip with chocolate hazelnut goodness from the first bite. They also offer filled donut holes, which is a nice change of pace from the plain glazed or cake donut holes most shops offer. The customer service is great. The ladies on staff are fast, patient, and just all around really nice. :) The Indifferent: The kolaches are meh. Better than Shipley's, but not as good as what you might find in central Texas or Koala Kolache near Langham Creek High School. Now they have some awesome kolaches! The drive-thru line does take a little longer than one would expect, but the donuts and cronuts are worth it. The Bad: They've got to do something about the coffee. We're talking scorched Starbucks bad here, which is really bizarre because they use generally tasty Katz coffee. In the 3 or so years I've been going to River Oaks donuts, the coffee has been pretty awful every single time. The cup is always filled to the brim, and never fails to slosh all over the car and your clothes with normal turns and stops. This morning I asked for 5 creams hoping that that would offset the foul taste because CAFFEINE and hope springs eternal. The picture is what it looked like after that much cream. Even doctoring it up with even more cream at work, it was still tough to drink. In Sum: Absolutely go for donuts, cronuts, and donut holes - you'll love them! For River Oats Donuts, check, check and check. River Oaks Donuts is as charming as one would expect, given its location. The storefront is very cute while remaining tasteful and understated. The workers were very friendly and very accommodating. What sets these doughnuts apart is their appearance. These were pretty good but I'd still cede my beloved Le Donut the win in terms of texture and flavor. Goodness me, these doughnuts are cute though. The attention to detail is obvious here. That makes these doughnuts worth it, especially if you're buying them for a group of girls. The frosted doughnuts look as if they belong as props in ads where skinny, well-dressed girls look really excited about eating doughnuts. The texture and colors of the frosting and sprinkles delighted my co-workers and I. Everyone kept raving about their appearance. My friend loved the jalapeno sausage prasek (looked like a kolache but I think it's different) but took a chocolate coconut doughnut, although she usually hates sweets. I loved that the ladies in the back glazed a red velvet cake doughnut with fresh cream cheese glaze for me when another lady took the last one in the case. I bought four of the "River Oaks Doughnuts," frosted with a green frosting that I found very pretty but that freaked out the rest of my co-workers. I bought more of those than any other type assuming that everyone else would find them as pretty as I did. Not everyone rides the artificial-food-coloring-train the way I do, it seems.
