This is a must do for me when in Savannah - love my pralines! I love that you can get a free sample when you walk in, and they have a huge variety of sweets including taffy. The sugar here is not cheap, but it's special. I usually grab at least a few pralines for the road and sometimes more. It's fun to watch them make the taffy, very interesting to see. Today they had a special where you buy 1 lb of pralines and get a 1/2 lb free so that was nice. The staff is friendly and you can usually get in and out pretty quickly. read more

Always delicious! I use them for parties as snacks and favors. I love to get the huge pecan pralines and I ordered 9 lbs of them for favors at my best friend in Savannah's birthday. I can make them, but they are never as pretty as the Riverstreet Sweet's pralines. The reason I'm giving 4 stars is that I had a significant language barrier when placing the order so I called the customer service line to make sure my order was correct and then when I called the morning of the day I was to pick them up they could not grasp that I didn't want to place an order because I would be picking my order up! Then I had to repeat what I had ordered multiple times. Anyway, I did get my order and everyone at the party loved them. I put two in each candy bag with a sticker of my friend being hugged by an Elvis impersonator in Las Vegas! Made a great party favor. Next time I'll use the Riverstreet Sweets on Broughton Street. Oooh heaven is a place on earth. I am forever thankful for whatever whim my family had 15+ years ago when we were visiting Hilton Head that we decided to go to Savannah nearby, and decided to go to this store. They have praline samples when you go in and they absolutely changed my life. They're fresh, warm, they melt in your mouth, and everything is right in the world. I have yet to find a praline that can compete with how perfect these are. Every time I'm there I need to get an entire box, and heavily guard it from anyone who wants some of my pralines. Many have attempted, none have survived. My second favorite thing to get here are their glazed pecans. They are the epitome of what a sweet and salty dessert should be, and I could eat a dangerous amount. The store itself is amazing too! No visit to Savannah would be complete for me without a visit to River Street Sweets. Back in 1973 the Strickland family was operating the Cotton Bale gift shop on historic River Street in Savannah, Georgia, when they went to a trade show looking for new merchandise. Eleven year old Tim Strickland found a fudge pot and asked his parents to buy it for the store. Mom Jennifer made up a batch of candy to sell and it was so popular that candy became the number one seller in the store. Six months later the family switched to selling candy full time. Father Stan bought a slab of marble from a gravestone company to hand dip pralines which became their most popular candy. River Streets Sweet is the oldest candy store in Savannah and it is still family run by Tim and his sister Jennifer. Stan operates Savannah's Candy Kitchen down the street. The heavenly scent of sugar wafts through the air as you are handed a praline sample when you walk in the door. I was there for the pralines which made River Street Sweets famous but they also sell ice cream, turtles, pecan logs, fudge, hand stretched peanut brittle, homemade pecan pies, and salt water taffy made in a 100 year old machine. If you can't visit the store in person they ship their sweets world wide. They also started to franchise in 2014 and now have stores in stores in Charleston, Myrtle Beach, Atlanta, Nashville, Key West, and Maryland. I was excited to find out they plan to open an Orlando location. Pralines are large. They sell them by the pound and they run around $3 each. They offer some flavors like chocolate but I'm a purists and like the original flavor. When you put a piece in your mouth it melts away on your tongue leaving the pecan behind. There is something so quintessentially Savanah about eating one. A highlight of my trip was getting my bag of pralines and stepping down to the river to watch the boats sail by as I savored my treat. My husband and I hadn't been to Savannah in nearly 15 years and enjoyed a quick stop today to introduce our two children to the city. Needless to say, a candy store on River Street was a must, and River Street Sweets ended up being our destination. We purchased a bag of taffy, a bag of various gummy treats, and a box of chocolate dipped items. Everything that I've tried thus far has been fantastic -- the taffy well-made, the gummy treats fresh, and the chocolates creamy and rich. The only reason I'm giving River Street 4 stars instead of 5 is the price -- I was a bit in shock when our total was nearly $60 for what I considered to be a modest amount of treats. The store makes everything look good. We got taffy and peanut turtles. The peanut turtles were good but I wouldn't say over the top. The taffy was extremely disappointing. We got a variety of flavors and none of them had much flavor to them at all. They pretty much all tasted the same. Except the peppermint which was over the top with the peppermint flavoring. It was really disappointing. Especially considering the cost. I would save my money for something better next time. read more

Ok, so I live in NY, so getting these treats back from Savannah without devouring them on the journey was more than a notion, but I'm happy to report that despite my co-workers slamming through the treats I brought to work in less than a day, I still have my stash tucked away at home and am conservatively making my way through every delicious little truffle and fudge. The truffles really are my favorites, though the taffy, of which there are still a few pieces left at work, are also fun and tasty! It's a big candy store, in what, normally, is a high traffic, historic, harbor side strip next to the Hyatt. It promotes its pralines as the signature candy. If you like the more traditional, gritty sugar praline than these full pecan beauties are all that. For me? Pralines have their equivalent to the Scobee scale, that measures heat, in chiles: The Loretta's scale. Loretta's in New Orleans, has become my bellwether for perfect pralines. They're a lot smoother, without so much of that raw, unfinished texture. This is about an 8 on the Loretta's scale. The rest of the candies, turtles, and fudge are first-rate. It's worth seeking this place out, They have other locations, but this one is big on charm. read more

So good! I bought a pound -- which was a good deal because they gave a 1/2 pound for free with every pound bought. I also got what I thought was what we call turtles, but they call bear claws. It was a big gooey wonderful glob of caramel over chopped pecans with chocolate on one side. They had them with different kinds of chocolate, but I got white chocolate. It was so good I made lot of oohs and ahs with every bite! I was really curious about the huge rice crispy treats dipped in different toppings and the caramel apples and the fudge and ... It was National Ice Cream Day and I couldn't resist the temptation or a visit to this premier Savannah location. It's a sweet experience to see how so the products are made and to sample some of your favorite childhood treats and get lost in nostalgia. The store is located right off the riverfront in Savannah's Historic District on River Street with a beautiful view of your boats going and coming. It's right guy next door to the World War Monument and several other fun restaurants and bars. Tons to do and be entertained by on that strip. The shop itself is separated into two parts. One the Inc cream shop and the other more of a chocolate station where the toffee and praline items are made. I had to stay away from the latter because they cross contaminate abs I have allergies to both pecans and walnuts. The items and reasonably priced and staff is more than happy to assist with your purchase. Praline, Maple bars etc are purchased by the weight (lb) and priced accordingly.
