After a nice evening exploring Savannah with the local ghost tour, my husband and I decided to walk along the river side and look around at the shops. We stopped by the Candy Kitchen to grab some drinks for the hotel. The staff were very friendly and helpful and though it was close to closing time, they gave us time to browse their selection of drinks and sweets, engaging us in pleasant conversation. That was what was truly outstanding about our visit, it was the staff here that made it positively memorable. This is a really cool place full of different kinds of candy, some made in house and some from other companies. They also have ice cream, pretzels, drinks, and more! But Savannah's Candy Kitchen is shockingly underwhelming with mediocre treats that pale in comparison to America's greatest purveyors of sweets. What a fun establishment to go into. It is chocolate, candy, popcorn, overload! I was greeted with a sample of pralines, which I've never had before. They were warm and melted in your mouth, absolutely delicious. I ended up, leaving with some of their salted dark chocolate truffles, and their giant peanut butter cups. If i could give 4.5 i would. This place is great and has a ton of candy varieties. The really good stuff is the homemade sweets. Fudge, chocolate covered items (pretzels etc), popcorn varieties, barks, giant pb cups and dipped rice crispy treats. So much to choose from. The only knock against them is the price. Chocolate covered pretzels for instance are about $27/lb. If you find the bag of broken bits its the same thing but only $11. Most of the options are really pricy so be prepared. read more

5-12-24 Mother's Day What better way to celebrate Mother's Day but in Savannah one of my most favorite cities in the World. When you think sweets I only think of this place when in Savannah. So hubby and I were on the Old Town Trolley tour so definitely had to get off at the Riverwalk and go directly here. I know what I want so get straight on line to buy six milk chocolate gophers. Very cute candy shop right by the river. One of my friends insisted we stop by so she could get some pralines before she left town. Once we were here, of course I had to get something, too. :) This is a spacious shop filled with more goodies than I could possibly list! You can smell it (in a good way, lol) from down the street and the displays are absolutely beautiful and very inviting. Highlights include candy apples, pralines, and beautiful chocolates. They were very busy on an early Sunday afternoon, so traffic throughout the shop was a little hard to navigate. Thankfully, there were multiple places to check out, so we weren't waiting around too long. Service wasn't effusively friendly but they were definitely working hard. It's fun to watch the candy being made. I got a chocolate Oreo pretzel and something called a gopher, which seems a bit like a chocolate turtle but larger, and with an outside covered in pecans rather than the usual chocolate coating. My friend got her pralines and also two biscuits/treats for her pup back home. I can only imagine the pralines are great since she remembered them from her childhood and wanted to come back and get them! For my part, the gopher thing was awesome. So many yummy pecans, gooey caramel...super satisfying. The pretzel was a little less successful; the Oreo pieces tended to chip off so that was a little sad. Still enjoyed it though! We stopped here for gelato after exploring River Street. It had been some 40 years since I last saw the factors on River Street, and quite a lot has changed. Savannah's Candy Kitchen is a small shop at street level that features all kinds of sweet treats. There's a combined gelato/ice cream counter on the left as you enter. Here we found at least a score of choices. My wife had a cup of an excellent Chocolate (5/5), I had Praline Cream (4/5). Overall, the texture and flavors were very good. Pros: The popcorn is good but very salty. The gelato is good and very creamy. The store has a lot of different and fun candy items. Con: The taffy - although it tastes good, it sticks to the wrapper, making it virtually not edible. Every single piece was soft and sticky - $12 down the drain. It was not even a warm day. I was so excited to get fresh taffy as usually it is hard and has sat around a while. The dark chocolate turtle - so disgusting. The chocolate was probably the worst chocolate I have had, and the caramel was still runny and beyond sweet. The dark chocolate pb cup was also ruined by the chocolate, and the pb had a strange taste. The chocolates look very pretty, but honestly, ask for a sample first. The store is clean and set up as a total tourist trap, but the staff were very friendly. If you are a chocolate/candy/fudge fan, you must stop by Savannah's Candy Kitchen! I've been to this location a couple times and everything I've tried has always been fantastic. Some of my favorites include: --Gophers - both milk chocolate and dark chocolate were great but especially enjoyed the dark. The caramel was smooth and delicious. Pecans were fresh. Their chocolate was top notch! --Peanut Butter Fudge - hands down the best fudge I've ever had! I'm normally not a huge fan of fudge, but this one was unbelievably delicious. Rich and smooth with perfect texture and flavor. --Cookies & Cream Bark - hubby loves white chocolate so this was right up his alley. Absolutely no shortage of Oreo pieces! Very good bark. I want to move here. Well, not to the Candy Kitchen per se, but to Savannah. During our cross country road trip in Summer 2022, we spent a couple of days in this historic city, and just fell in love with it, warts and all. As SoCal natives and lifelong residents, visiting a city like this, so full of history and charm, really makes the heart ache in different directions. There's a "Life is like a box of chocolates" punchline in here somewhere... heck, you can walk to that very filming spot and hike up your pants like Gump if you want. Luckily, copious quantities of chocolate and sugar assuage the torment of malcontent, and sate the hunger for something geographically different. Enter the Candy Kitchen on River St., just a few doors down from the place we had lunch. After turning down the dessert menu at that restaurant, we asked the server where we might find some sweets. This place was her top recommendation, and also the closest. Good thing, because we were pretty stuffed... But there's always room for peanut butter cups, says I. The store is about what your wildest candy dreams and imagination could muster: floor to ceiling shelves of just about every candy you ever knew at any stage of your life, surrounding several glass top counters with even more delectable creations of chocolate, caramel, fudge, and all sorts of other goodies. Oh you wanted ice cream? Move to the left, and have at it. Oh, you were looking for some kind of candy coated apple? Good luck picking from the 50+ options and iterations, each more beautiful than the one before it. They even had that candy that's been outlawed in the People's Republic of California, you know... Things like candy gum cigarettes. My kid bought a pack, chewed most of it to it's 15 second flavorless conclusion, and so far, we haven't found Pall Mall's or Camel's under his bed. The fact that this candy store is just a few steps from cobblestone streets and decidedly non-ADA staircases that were traveled by our forefathers and founders of the nation make it all the more special. I know you folks who live there don't want another California family relocating out there... and trust me, we can't afford to leave for a while anyway. You can enjoy a free sample of their pralines as they are being cooked. (A mouth full of flavored sugar). 4 pralines cost around $15 (a little less than 1/2 lb. Their special is buy a pound and get 1/2 lb free. Purchased a Paw Patrol Lunch box for my Grand ($18) and he could fill it with all the candy it would hold from the barrels. I feel like this is one of those places you walk into and are so mesmerized by the fragrance of the sweets and the variety to choose from that the price becomes the last concern. I walked in and was drawn to the ice cream, popcorn and chocolates and decided to grab some pralines to go. To my surprise, they were more expensive than River Street Sweets just steps away where they had a special offer: buy 1 lb and get 1/2 lb for free. I paid just about the same amount for 1/2 lb at the register here as I did at RSS. Wasn't happy about that so keep that in mind. As for the taste, the pralines are delicious, possibly because they all use the same recipe. They had lots of ice cream and if I were spending the day here I would have definitely indulged. Since this was a pit stop off I-95 I decided to save it for another visit to Savannah. Some friends tried the popcorn and loved it. Really there is something for everyone here.
