DO NOT STAY OR BOOK AT RIVERBEND. OWNER OF RIVERBEND IS TRASHY AND RUDE!
We booked three sites at Criders on the Frio. Nice, family-owned RV and Cabin park. The RV spots are a quick car or golf cart ride away from the river, which our family found very easy to navigate via our truck and/or the kids on bikes.
Only downfall to this place was the neighboring campground, RiverBend on the Frio. Saturday morning our group of 6 adults and 5 kids, set up our canopy on the bank of the river about 25 yards from where we accessed via steps from Criders property. We sat there all day, not bothering anyone. We had country on the radio (no rap or bad words) our kids played with other kids, and we sat around and talked. Around 5:30pm we went back to our RV site and left our tent and floats where they were (as we watched every other patron do).
The next day, we showed up and our tent and floats were gone. We were bummed, felt a little violated that it was "stolen" (our assumption) but decided to make the best of it and put our chairs in the water in the same spot. Off our kids went to play and we started chatting and laughing, enjoying the sun.
Maybe 20 minutes had passed before a man came stomping through the river towards us, and says this is private property, do you want to leave? Well, a couple of the men simply said no- and stayed where they were. We were completely, 100% in the water and weren't doing anything wrong. The man proceeds to yell at our group, & tell us he owns the entire river in front of his RV park, and where we are sitting is for Riverbend on the Frio guests only. (Side note, it was Sunday July 2nd at 2:45pm. Whoever was going to set up on the river was already there). His tone of voice was very patronizing and disrespectful, so he wasn't getting the reaction (us leaving) that he wanted. I don't think he's ever heard the term that you catch more flies with honey than vinegar.
He was calmly told by our group he did not own the water and we weren't leaving. He escalated, and so did some of us, but not one of us yelled a threat or cuss word, but he did. He took out his phone & started recording- not only the adults but the kids too (all 14 or younger). He says he is going to call the sheriff & press charges. He admits he had our tent and floats, which we can pick up in his office, but makes sure to tell us we cannot go through the property to get there as that would be trespassing. Eventually, we pack up & move 25 yards back down river towards the stairs. Everyone was watching and we just left to make it stop. But the damage was done. All of us were in a funk from the event, embarrassed because he made us feel like his guests were better than us and yelled at us as everyone watched, it ruined our mood for the rest of the day.
We got to talking and decided to let it go because he was clearly insane, and we just wanted to enjoy our weekend.
A couple of us walked up river to tell our older kids we were moving. He proceeded to follow us down the river from his property, darting behind trees and trying to be inconspicuous, but clearly watching us walk THROUGH THE MIDDLE OF THE RIVER.
After we got our kids, 2 of our guys left to drive to his store & get our tent. When they get there, owner is sitting and won't say a word.
They come back to the river and the next thing we know there are sheriffs and game wardens surrounding our truck. Sheriff explains that the owner next door called in with our plate number to say we had made "threats". Our guy says "yes, I asked him if he knew what SEO was. It means search engine optimization. I told him he was going to find out because I was going to leave him a bad review on yelp". Sheriff laughs and says he's going to go talk to him and explain that, as the game warden pointed out, no one owns the river, and as long as we were in the water, he couldn't ask us to leave. They made sure we had our property back (because technically we could press charges for him stealing our tent) & then told us to enjoy our time. But not before also pointing out that even though Riverbend has a sign up that says "this is Private property" (which was hidden behind tents and vegetation when we walked up) cops don't enforce made up rules, they enforce the law - quote from the officer! I hope he said the same thing to crazy Riverbend owner, but if not, at least he knows now! Not to mention, we may have been Crider's guests this weekend, but he solidified that no one we know will ever be a guest at his park- which wasn't the case 5 days ago. We had discussed checking it out to see if we should stay there later before he tried to treat us like second class citizens. I would also like to point out that the Crider's owner came down when the sheriff was there & apologized on behalf of the neighboring campground. He was nothing but professional, nice, and apologetic for something that wasn't his fault. read more
