What a pleasant surprise along the River! We were strolling down River Street & noticed they had added a ton of new shops. In the past, there wasn't much left to see after passing under the tunnel but they've added a lot to this corridor. Near this end, right near the river, is a small Biergarten tucked behind the buildings. They offer all German cuisine here! It's mostly pretzels & bratwurst, but a decent selection & sides. We dropped in to have a bier. There are about 5-6 long bench tables, with a nice trellis/track lighting overhead & columns of ivy (I think) providing privacy. The atmosphere here is stellar, providing a scenic backdrop of the river. The beer I had, Gun Bunny Witbier, was perfect for the Biergarten! My only suggestion is for them to add more authentic German Beer (Tucher Helles & Weihenstephaner would be ideal additions). The options were fairly limited. Other than that, I'd highly recommend stopping by here!

We stopped by here as we were walking around. We were hoping to find a table, but discovered they removed most of their tables, in efforts to force people not to hang out for St Patrick's day. Pretty stupid considering they are one of the few places with only outdoor seating, yet all the indoor restaurants are serving at capacity. Let's use some common sense. Sitting outside is way safer than indoors, yet you're taking outdoor seating options away from people. The complete opposite of what should be happening. We grabbed a giant pretzel, which came with 2 beer cheese and 1 mustard. My husband also grabbed a beer here. We had to try and walk around to find a bench to sit on because of the stupidity mentioned in the above paragraph.

Live German music on the accordion

Let me start by saying I was super excited when I heard a Biergarten was opened by the Savannah River. This was my first visit and I was disappointed and doubt we will return. All beers were over $10 per glass! It was actually a plastic cup which is a lesser experience than a glass, but I understand why they stick to plastic in the open air setting. First impression is this is super expensive. Additionally, the garden isn't very big. If I am paying over $10 for a beer then I don't want to carry a traveler and walk around. There needs to be a seat so I can sit and enjoy the German atmosphere. Now there weren't many people there on the Friday night that I was there, but it was chilly outside and is still in the COVID reduced traffic. There are two counters, on opposing sides of the Biergarten pergola. One side was German themed but offered local beers, not actual German beer. They offered a few German inspired munchies like pretzels. On the alternate side was an Asian Spring roll counter. It seemed very out of place. It was a really odd choice for the Biergarten. We enjoyed the live German music, consisting of a single man playing the accordion. The views of the River, bridge and boats was nice. Of course it's a great place to just sit and people-watch. I just couldn't get over the high price of the beer, and they eclectic mix of German and Asian fare. It's one of those things that make you go hmmmmm.

So glad we stop here! We got some delicious bratwurst dogs and pretzel bites. We got our dogs without sauerkraut and with caramelized onions. The pretzel bites were fresh, crispy and had a hint of something we couldn't recognize but was delicious! Sure, it's overpriced but it's in a tourist area and still worth it!

Over priced and over rated. Buying a frozen pretzel at the grocery store would have been better than this one. Keep walking East down River St and you'll find better food.

Holy moly, for an unpretentious little place shared with a Sushi shack the prices are certainly outrageous. We shared a small entree and an appetizer, drank 2 beers and 2 sodas and spent $61. Live German music was ok. Food tasted authentic, but I can't get over the price.

Our server was friendly and helpful, which I appreciated. But the food just didn't deliver. I ordered the turkey club (~$20), which was supposed to have honey mustard. The sauce soaked into the bread and didn't taste like honey mustard at all, making the sandwich hard to eat. We also ordered the steak frites (~$30). The steak was overcooked and had clearly been sliced without resting, so it was tough and lacked juice. The chicken and waffles were also underwhelming--the chicken was bland, and the waffle was soggy inside with a strong cinnamon flavor that tasted undercooked. None of us ended up eating more than a few bites of our meals, which was disappointing given how excited we were to try the place. On the positive side, the marinara served with the mozzarella bites was very good, and the ambiance is cute (though the seating isn't the most comfortable). I really hope they work out the kitchen issues, because it would be great to have a solid locally owned diner here. Right now, though, the food quality just doesn't match the prices.

The iPhone GPS brought us to the back side of the building, but we eventually found the entrance across from the former Ghost Coast Distillery. It was so quiet you could hear a pin drop inside (no background music). I was surprised to see an axe throwing lane! And a wall of beers on tap. There were few other patrons dining at the time. This is an order at the counter and they bring your food out joint. It took about 15-20 minutes to prepare our one to go meal. My husband ordered the pulled chicken sandwich, which came with fries and a choice of side. He opted for the coleslaw. They offered us a complimentary cookie which I enjoyed on the way out. The to go order was served in a paper box and a paper bag. No napkins or utensils were given (this is the new "green" initiative businesses are doing, which I appreciate). By the time we got home to eat, my husband said the sandwich was great but needed more sauce. The staff was very friendly and welcoming. They mentioned there will be a grand opening party in coming days. I am glad to see this area of the historic district being built up with hot & new businesses!

Recently, we visited Chabela, 102 E. Broad St. where we enjoyed a variety of dishes and beverages. Our starters included a delightful grilled romaine salad, which was a first for our group and quickly became the table's favorite -- simply outstanding. The ambiance of the restaurant was pleasant, with lovely decor and music that was appropriately subdued, enhancing our dining experience. The table settings contributed to a comfortable atmosphere. We sampled the Georgia cheese platter, featuring an excellent selection of cheeses paired with pepper jelly, honeycomb, and candied pecans. The pairings complemented the cheeses beautifully, and the fresh, soft faccio was particularly impressive. For beverages, we enjoyed the Amethyst Blueberry Ginger Mint on Ice, a non-alcoholic drink that was refreshingly zingy and palate-cleansing, along with a classic lemonade. For dessert, we shared the crème brûlée, which was simply exceptional -- a highlight of the meal. However, the sweet tea served was not as sweet as expected. Our waiter, Anthony, was friendly and pleasant, though his presentation was somewhat lacking in professionalism, which was noticeable given the restaurant's upscale ambiance. Our main courses included a shrimp and risotto dish that exemplified excellence. The risotto was perfectly cooked, with a creamy, bright, and light sauce, and the shrimp and vegetables paired harmoniously. The seared grouper served on a bed of spinach with dill lemon cream was another standout; the fish was cooked to perfection, and the sauce complemented the dish without overpowering it. The presentation was appealing, and every element was thoughtfully prepared. We also enjoyed the maize or hummus with grilled vegetables, which was delicious. The vegetables were roasted to perfection, and the deep-fried flour component added a delightful crunch -- though its name escaped us, it was a memorable addition. The grouper cakes, however, were disappointing, as only one was served despite the menu listing it as an "S" portion meant for sharing. The cake was somewhat spicy and not as shareable as anticipated. Additionally, the smashed potatoes fell short -- they were lukewarm and lacked the expected flavor. Overall, Chabela provided a wonderful dining experience with numerous standout dishes. Our group looks forward to exploring more of Savannah's culinary scene and sharing our critiques.
