They have given my family 0 updates on the status of his cremation, and continue to call asking for information when my family is trying to grieve. I would give 0 but that's not an option. I called Riverside when my mom passed and they gave me an apt a week and a half out. We waited for the apt, when we got there and nothing was planned right. My sister and I are in our 30s planning our mother's funeral. She's our last all we have we have no idea what we are doing and they were of NO help. I had to go back the same day because they didn't mention funeral card or obituary or even the book. We waited another week after that to see what's going on and they still haven't contacted OMI to release my mom. Worst service I called to cancel and go pick up the urn I bought and brought in and they still gave me a hard time getting it back. Not just that but when they brought it up they sat it on the counter and walked away instead of atleast handing it to me. Not professional. They drag out time. No respect. No support. Their Tribute Store isn't reliable when it comes to ordering flowers . Even there a 2nd party involved . I have place flowers arrangement two days in advance , and delivery before the funeral services . Come to find out that they were delivered after the services . I wasn't only ones , two more of my family members place orders for flowers as well they weren't delivery as well in timely manner. So this so disheartedly specially in this type of event. I am beyond dissatisfied I have had nothing but run around with this place since my grandmothers passing I had to be the one to call them about everything not one single damn call from them. They play the blame game for everything and don't admit to any mistakes, Then to top it off the certificates I ordered and paid for I only got two and had to prove that I paid for more then two!!! My mother died peacefully at home. When her service was conducted, she looked like she'd been traumatized at the time of death. She was sheet white, her hair was never combed, no makeup was placed even though I paid to have her groomed. The chapel is poorly lit and it felt like we were in a cave. Of course, my funeral agent had to be out of town the day of the funeral, so service was poor. They also advertise as a low-cost funeral home, but it is not. I paid exactly what it would have cost to go to a more reputable funeral home. read more

Wow. If I had read these reviews, I might have missed a supremely caring and polite experience. My friend's husband died in Albuquerque far away from her and his family. Riverside worked very easily and simply with us to get him home. It was a complex process and they managed beautifully. Thank you, Westley, for your professionalism and promptness. From the very beginning, the Riverside staff were professional, respectful and helpful. When my grandfather passed, the young men that transported him to the funeral home were absolutely wonderful. They asked for permission to move him and even if it was ok to cover his face. That same level of caring was observed in each staff member we met. All of my questions were answered, even when I had to call to ask the questions I forgot. The service was lovely. The chapel is very nice and all the flowers were in place when we arrived. I am so sick of patient's families coming to me crying, saying Riverside is blaming the family for not being "organized", or rushing them to make decisions, not being on time for their appointments. If I could give negative stars, I would. We used Riverside when each of my parents dies without issue. My sister even used them for per cremation and was pleased. Today I called to make arrangements to have a friend cremated. Since it's Sunday, I got an answering service which was fine. The woman I spoke with was lovely, very professional and kind. She will have someone call me right back. Within minutes I received a call from the general manager who was extremely rude. He interrupted me repeatedly. The situation with my friend is difficult as he has a very fractured relationship with his family, which is why I'm handling his affairs. I asked him if he needed 51% of my friend's children to sign off on the cremation. I explained that potentially because of the fractured relationships, it could be difficult. I asked if one child and a brother could sign. He said no, it had to be the children. He then accused me of trying to go around the rules. I told him that I did not ask him to violate any rules, I was merely asking if a brother could sign in place of a child. Mid-sentence he interrupted me again to inform me that he's been a funeral home director for 20+ years and he is not going to violate rules. I again told him that was never asked of him. I said I'd like to work with someone else there to which he informed me that wouldn't happen as he is the manager. I had already made an appointment... Jan 3, 2022, to come sign paperwork ( blaming Covid-19 for the delay) so thought I'd made it pretty clear that I wanted to use their services, even telling him I'd already told the VA that Riverside would be the ones picking up my friend's body. This "manager" continued to be abrasive, interrupting me so much that I finally told him forget it. I'd call someone else. Maybe he was mad that his Sunday was interrupted. I don't know, but I will tell you he was the rudest funeral home person I've ever had contact with. After this experience, I will not ever recommend them again. read more

One of our guests had to run out and get a projector to run in. The director did not greet guests, did not organize the service, and . . . when a fuze blew in the midst of the service - was not at hand. When I went to find him he was EATING HIS DINNER AT THE DESK - in the midst of the service. He didn't fix the problem, didn't even apologize for it. Just shrugged his shoulders. She made everyone in my family feel very uncomfortable and very unwelcome! Anne was very aggressive and unfriendly! I don't know if she was having issues and problems that day but none the less she should have left her problems at the door considering we were already trying to cope with the loss of my Aunt and she was very rude and disrespectful! This was a terrible experience. They are happy to take your money, but their followthrough is less than professional. After a "just between us" conversation with Ms. Sanchez as to my displeasure with her suggestions to my family, she took it upon herself to contact the other members of the family to tell them what I said in privacy and cause additional tension within the family. Our conversation should have been kept between us, but crossed that professional barrier to add to our stressful times. Shame on this business that they do not have a more professional staff and a book of rule not to cross. First contact with this company by the gentlemen picking up my friend were very courteous and told us that everything could be handled. But phone call to the office met with a very rude person who lied to us. The daughter lived out of state and tried to get paperwork faxed to her as arrangements were being made to get here. This person was so rude to her that she was crying when called us back for help. I would like to say that things got better but they did not. I wish I could give them negative stars. I would never use this company again! If I could give it minus 5 stars I would, unfortunately we used the San Mateo Riverside when my mom passed in July 2017. I feel horrible that this ended up being where my mother had her service, these were the most UNPROFFESSIONAL people I've ever worked with. They have no compassion and promised things that they later claimed they never said even though they said it in front of three people! They told us that they would have someone conducting and overseeing the service and on the day of the service we arrived a hour before it was to began and they had nothing set-up and nothing prepared! We had to ask for everything we had paid for and then they went around searching for the items, you would have thought it was there first funeral! Had it not been for my oldest daughter nothing would have come together. Then they lied, just the day before they guaranteed someone would be there to conduct the funeral and on the day of the funeral they denied they told us that! My mother decided to obtain my dad's funeral services at RiverSide on San Mateo. My mother also had her funeral there, same location different year. I have to say this place needs to be more kind to grieving individuals and families. The lady at the front desk (with tattoos on her neck) made fun of my mother's complete name with another of her co-workers over the phone, ON FRONT OF ME, as they couldn't find my mother's file. Not profesional or nice. Normally I do not leave reviews, I wouldn't recommend this place. Not even for my deceased pets. On another issue, they do not follow up on calls, they claim they will make. They need to hire people that at least "pretend" to care a little. After all, regardless of the deceased name, this place charges and gets paid with the same kind of money. read more

If I could I would give a -10 ! The funeral home is very attentive until they get your money and then they won't return your calls and only care about the new families they haven't collected from yet , that is where there focus is . We prepaid for the funeral , casket , etc . An insurance plan was taken out with NGL and the Mike the representative for Riverside funeral write up the insurance contract , now you would assume he knows the contract front and back , it wasn't until our lived passed that we find out he failed to fill in the section for a beneficiary, he left it blank and now I am being told the refund we are due can not be paid to me . When you go to a funeral home you expect the person who's job it is knows there job and it is their responsibility to ask and fill in every line section of that contract , but now we are the ones who are paying the penalty for this person not doing his job correctly . I set up an phone interview because I was told by Danielle that it would be better and easier over the phone . The phone appointment was made for 4pm , so I made sure I was ready with my paperwork and another friend to discuss funeral arrangements if our loved one . At 4:25 pm no call from Danielle so I called the funeral home and was told she was with a family and yet I was told it would be better to do it over the phone , Danielle got on the phone and I told her we had a 4 pm appointment to discuss the funeral arrangements and she said Oh I am sorry ! I went to the funeral home to bring a picture of our loved one and clothes , etc . I then get a call from Danielle that she needs me to come to the office 15 to 20 minutes early the day if the funeral , she forgot to have me sign some papers and she would have my refund check . I get to the funeral home at 10:40 am , funeral is scheduled for 11 am . I have to speak with Danielle and told she is with a family , I explain that I was told to come to the office to sign papers and get a refund check , 10 minutes later I am still waiting and getting upset because the funeral is at 11 am another person (Mason) comes out and asks if I have been helped again I explain the situation and finally Danielle comes out and she tells me OH I left the papers you need to sign at the chapel and by then it is 11 am and I ask her why didn't you call and text me and let me know you changed your mind and that you left them with Stefan at the chapel AGAIN , she says I am sorry ! I get to the chapel and supppse to have pictures of my loved one and the casket and there were 2 and so blurry you couldn't read them and I ask where the refund check is again OH I am so sorry I didn't know the office manager was off today so I won't be able to get your check , but I am willing to bring it to your house or you can come down and get it tomorrow, meantime people are waiting to go in and I haven't even been able to put the pictures in the casket yet . The funeral didn't start until 11:15 am needless to say I was very upset , this is already an upsetting time because you have lost a loved one and then you have to deal with all of this . I ended having to take pictures with my phone after the service and eventually having them printed for a relative who lived out of town and requested them . I then called a few days later because no one contacted me about the refund check and constants was told they are out of the office , with a family , in the b phone , left messages and never returned . Finally I asked Stacey to have the owner called me gave my telephone number to her and said I did not want Octavia or Mason to call me I now only wanted to speak to Mr Finnegan the owner . Well Mason called and I told him I wanted to speak to the owner and he said it was not possible that he handled the problems that's what they get paid for . I went ahead and explained everything and he told me they looked over the insurance contract and that Mike had left the beneficiary part blank and I explained that was not my fault and I shouldn't be held responsible, he said there was no he could do , very convenient don't you think ! Mason asked for me to bring our loved ones will and her father's obituary since he was listed as the beneficiary on the will and other papers , we met with him on July 15th and that they would have to relinquish the refund to our loved ones cousin since she was next on the will . It seems very odd though that Riverside funeral home had no problem taking the money from me not once , but twice and allowed me to make all funeral arrangements, but now that they owed me money they could not refund it to me . Mason told myself and another person at the meeting that after our meeting was done he had to meet with another family , but immediately after he would call our loved ones cousin and let her know the check would be mailed to her , 2 days later she called me and said no one reached out to her so Mason was called and he told us I'm sorry I have been busy and he would call that day . read more

They embarrassed us at the rosary and said they needed the rest of the payment or there wasn't going to be any services .Thankfully from the support of my family and many friends they all pitched in right then and there.We were disgusted with staff Then to make matters worse .At the funeral after the drivers of the hearse for Riverside took off with my baby girl without even waiting and I thought they were supposed to drive under 80mph ya that's how fast we had to catch up to them when they were going to the cemetery.And to add insult to injury they tore off a piece of paper and wrote the price of the funeral as a receipt.So WARNING!!! On her death, my mother had donated her body to the UNM School of Medicine, and Riverside Funeral Home is the designated agent to handle the details for transport and the paperwork in those instances. Even though we were not paying for full funeral services for my Mom, everyone we dealt with at Riverside was professional, competent and compassionate to the family's needs. My uncle's service was held recently at this funeral home and several things were handled less than professionally. 1) The sign in front of the building posts the actual prices for a cremation and traditional service, which seems very tacky. 2) During the service they began experiencing technical difficulties and could not play a CD that was very integral to the service that we had planned. They lightly apologized and claimed that their sound guy was out. 3) Many of the flowers that were delivered by different florists we left without water after the wake on Thursday and then looked wilted and began dieing on Friday which was the day of the service. We brought this up to them and they said "as far as we know the flowers aren't our responsibility to maintain. call the florist." 4) Within 1 or 2 minutes of the funeral service ending (which it did 10 minutes earlier than scheduled) the director approached my widowed aunt, who was hugging her son and clearly grieving, to ask what we were doing with the flowers and to tell her we needed to clear out within 30 minutes for another scheduled service. 5) The owner of the home was dressed informally in a v-neck t shirt and gold chain. 6) When I quietly and politely tried to address these issues with the director she began to argue with me. I understand that this is a business and they have to keep a schedule and deal with florists and lingering guests but given the loss that every family they deal with is experiencing I think they could show more professionalism and compassion. I hope no one else has to deal with such insensitivity when saying goodbye to a loved one. read more

They were supposed to call and let us know when they were going to do it and they never called. I called to ask them why they didn't; all they wanted to do was argue and disagree with me. Very poor customer service. The manager cussed at me and hung up the phone. The owner threatened me and hung up the phone. I can only tell anyone who wants to come here to stay away. Do not take your loved ones there. I have never seen such an unprofessional place. They do not care; all they care about is the money. Let me begin by saying this was an extremely difficult time for my family as are all deaths. My family had heard positive things about this funeral home but sadly we were disappointed. We had ordered the cards, candles and a dvd to celebrate my nephews life and the woman who was in charge of making them (Rosalyn) completely ruined everything. All of the pictures were blurred with marks that were not on the originals! Some of our precious memories were even left out of the dvd considering we gave her all paper copies. I do not like to speak ill of others but that young woman (Roslyn) was completely incompetent in regards to her job. In a profession such as this one must be efficient and compassionate. Treating the family as you would like to be treated in a difficult time. I would encourage anyone who is in a time of sorrow, as we were, to seek out another place for services. Very kind people, but they initially told us that cremation arrangements would be complete within two working days. It took 6 business days (9 days total), and required four or five follow-up calls on our part -- they never had the courtesy to contact us and let us know about the delays. This made it harder than it needed to be for out-of-town family who didn't want to leave before everything was done. You shouldn't have to call a funeral home to beg for a rush order. read more
