The Roanoke Weiner Stand is a classic family restaurant that has been around since 1916. Conveniently located in the heart of Downtown Roanoke, right next to the Center in the Square, and the Roanoke City Market, this place is full of local history and mystic. After all, hot dogs are deeply embedded in America's food culture. After hearing so much about this local family restaurant and the important role it has played in the lives of the people of Roanoke and its visitors throughout the years, I decided to go visit for myself, explore the restaurant, taste its food, study its interior design and ambiance, and experience for myself a taste of the famous Roanoke Weiner that everyone is talking about. First of all, I was very impressed by the cleanliness of the restaurant and how it managed to mix the old with the new in its contemporary interior design, furnished with new but furniture design from the restaurants of the 60's, and souranded with artworks and photographs relevant to the long successful history of the restaurant and it's founder. Branded as the Hot Dog King and Roanoke's Oldest Restaurant, customers of all ages will have memories of the time when they visited their old location and soon to be new customers as they visit this new location with a historic resilience. All focused on one simple but delicious American cuisine item: the hot dog. When I entered the restaurant for a late lunch it was already full of customers eating there; some arriving and others leaving. Some even mentioning how they have been customers of the place for years. Above the ordering counter was a large menu for one to study while the customers in front ordered their food. When my time came up to order, a young lady greeted me and took my order. I ordered a hot dog. A sloppy Joe, french fries, homemade banana pudding and a small drink of Iced Dr. Pepper. As the lady took the order, a gentleman prepared and brought it to the counter. I went to sit down at a table where I could see the inside of the restaurant and at the same time view through the front window the Historic Market Building. The hot dog was a quality yet simple hot dog served in a fresh and soft bun with mustard, chili, and onions. The French Fries were crinkle cut. The Sloppy Joe Sandwich was served on a Hotdog bun. The hot dog and fries were delicious. The chili was a bit too salty for me as well as the sloppy Joe. I would also have appreciated it in a burger bun. The Banana Pudding could have used more sugar. But the dining experience was very unique and worthwhile. And I discovered a great place to enjoy some time alone or with others. read more

While no longer merely a stand, Roanoke Weiner Stand still appears to be a place to visit when in town. And why not, you can fill up for a bit over 5 bucks in their combo meal. Stoped in for a quick snack and soda while waking downtown. The Weiner Stand is a Roanoke institution and since I like a good hotdog I thought I would give it a try plus it was one of the few places in downtown I could find a fountain Coke Zero. It is a standard hotdog stand with a small seating area but the staff were polite and attentive. I ordered two large sodas and a hot dog with bun, wiener, sauce, mustard and onion. Everything came out quickly and the hotdog is made in front of you. No complaints about the hot dog but it was a good dog but nothing spectacular. read more

Since moving from the valley in 1992, I have searched for a decent (I gave up.on good) in Charlotte. JJs Red Hots is good finally but nothing compares to the RWS! My husband stopped at the Roanoke Weiner stand yesterday (June 1,2021) around 1:30 to get a hotdog for me. As I open the bag, I instantly noticed an awful, sickening odor coming from the hotdog. It smelled so bad that I became nauseated. I quickly threw it in the trash. However, the smell seemed to permeate my house, so I took it to a nearby dumpster and threw it in. I called the restaurant and talked to the manager who was apologetic. She said she knew it wasn't the chili b/c they had just made it. I told her the hotdog itself must have been spoiled and couldn't understand why I could smell that stench and yet the one preparing the food could not. I suggested they be more alert in the freshness of their food so no one would get sick. I told her I did not want a refund or substitute . I will not be back!! D. Wright read more

BEST HOTDOG EVER! Well, maybe I'm influenced by the fact that Roanoke is my hometown and going to the Weiner Stand was always a big treat. SO. I decided to test my memory to see if this was, indeed, just a childhood myth of mine. Guess what? BEST HOTDOG EVER! The secret? They steam the hotdogs, then they cook them on an open grill so they get a little browned. a. ma. zing. Then, to gild this lily, you can top it with their chili and chopped onions. Wow. My Grandfather went there when he was younger and my dad went there when he was a kid. So needless to say I've been going since i was little. You wont find a better hot dog. I even took my son when he was 6 yrs old. he will be 28 next month. I remember one time going years ago we all went and as soon as my dad walked in the guy behind the counter remembered my dad and just started fixing his hot dogs. Now how many places can you go and get service like that. It shows they really care about there customers. You probably think oh they must be from Roanoke, well my dad was but haven't lived there since he was young. They just are great hot dogs and they didn't change things with there food just to save money like most food places do after awhile. If it ain't broke don't try to fix it is my philosophy. I was very young when our parents first brought us to have hotdogs. Always stopping whenever I could. Now, I share this with my family now. In fact we stopped there about 30minutes ago. We're on the way to Dragon Con 2017. But are stopped at Starbucks in order for Will to have his Japanese class. At the weinie stand, I had the usual all the way, Bridgette had all they way with cheese and Will had plain with relish. I just can't imagine a hotdog without mustard, onions, and their famous chili. We came in for dinner today about 5:40. They close at 6. They were so nice and made our orders quickly. The problem is, we were eating and talking and they were cleaning the floor with a cleaner that smelled really bad. They emptied the trash banging the trashcan together and having conversations that were so loud we couldn't hear ourselves think!! The fries were fair, he cooked some fresh and mixed them with the old so some were hot the others were just warm. The hotdogs were good as usual. I have worked in fast food so I know the workers try to get out of there but it isn't a very pleasant experience with all the noise. Oh and they turned the fans off half way thru our meal and it got really hot really fast. I've always liked this place when I want a hotdog but not sure I will come back at dinner time on Saturday! read more

When we were younger, my dad would take me here every week while my brother was at his guitar lessons down the street. The owner was always there and was so kind. I believe he died a few years back. Hotdogs are my favorite "comfort" food and theirs were great. The service was excellent. Great dogs on soft buns with chili, mustard and onions. Great prices and some interesting options but the hot dog which is the centerpiece was not that great. Love the finely diced onions but really didn't like their chili. It had a distinct nutmeg or cinnamon type flavor that neither of us really cared for. We did really enjoy the sloppy joe which is served on a hotdog bun. read more

Hot Dogs had a ton of white onions on them and were smothered with chili.The building inside was freezing cold and my young nieces were shivering. What's up with that? This is my favorite hotdog literally ever. It's such a Roanoke staple. They have the most flavorful hotdog chili I've ever eaten, and the texture is perfect. It's always nice to see Johnny there as well. I remember going here as a kid, and he'd always be the one behind the counter making the dogs. He was even there when my dad was a kid! The hot dogs were good but the service was miserable. My daughter and I decided to grab lunch and we were met by 3 women behind the counter. 1 assembling the dogs: she never looked up at us and did not appear to enjoy what she was doing. 1 running the register - was not terribly unfriendly but did not thank us for our purchase. 1 in between, refilled my water upon request and no other words were exchanged. When we left absolutely nothing was said - no Thank You, We appreciate your business, come again, etc... Last time we were here about 2 years ago the service was outstanding & friendly. The hot dogs are the BEST EVER. My favorite. Unfortunately, I paid to park after calling at 5:49 to ensure they took credit cards. Which they do. Walked up at 5:55 with another gentleman who had also paid to park and they were closed. 5 min early. Not only closed, but everything was mostly cleaned up. Guess the employees were in a hurry to leave. This is what happens when you try and support the locals. I was going to order about 20 hot dogs for a party I was on my way to. Shame on y'all. Would recommend not showing up 5 mins before they close to try and order a bunch of food. That is not only inconsiderate but just rude. This place has always been a great local place to eat! I was in town for a convention and this place was recommended by several locals as a must stop for hot dogs..boy were they right! The dogs are delicious..especially when topped all the way with chili, mustard and onions. The price was right in my wheelhouse, the service quick and the employees courteous. Okay, I hope this settles anyone questioning this place. You do not come here for a gourmet hot dog. You do not come here to customize your order in any way. You get a combo, all the way, and then you let them know what kind of fountain drink you want. That is it. No frills. Inexpensive and quick. You get a hot dog, on a fresh roll, with basic diced onions, mustard, and unique hot dog chili. If you don't like it then your expectations were not even in the vicinity they should have been. You come here for a dog, some good crinkle cut fries, and a great fountain soda. That's IT! This is a dive, and I love it. The worst chili I have ever eaten on a hotdog. I ordered slaw on it and they gave it to me in a plastic cup and it was frozen solid.
