I am starting to believe Robata is not the place that it once was. We had been going to this place for over a year, and always had a great experience and food. The past two times the food was lacking, and the service was just atrocious. Recently we had two friends come in from out of town, and we told them the sushi and ramen was the best in Saint Louis hands down. They never got to taste the Ramen as after an hour and a half the server forgot to put it in. We even arrived at 5:00 on the dot as we know it gets busy, and not only was the food that was delivered wrong but it was not good. Having hit Ramen Tei and Nudo House and really enjoying their ramen, I figured it was time I swung by here since it's been around for longer. My boyfriend and I visited last night and the experience was mixed. The menu is extensive- perhaps even too extensive, but I was excited to see so many different things available. We ordered the fried tofu, takoyaki (octopus balls), and pork tonkatsu ramen. The food was just fine. It was good. There wasn't anything I had that I disliked or wouldn't eat again, but it just didn't have the complexity of flavor and umami that other ramen joints in STL have. Again, nothing was bad, just nothing I'm dying to have again. The restaurant is very small with tables being close together. Even though my boyfriend and I had a fantastic time, people were constantly glancing over and observing our conversation due to the close proximity. Don't come here if you want privacy. Finally, service was ok at best. Our waitress wasn't outright rude but she was immensely disinterested and always gave off a little bit of a "I'm better than you" vibe. Very little asking if we were doing well or needed anything. Acting as if drink refills was her doing us a big favor despite how politely we asked. I also felt very rushed. After having only been eating for around 10 minutes she was already trying to clear our plates and asking if we wanted things boxed and putting the check on the table, looking annoyed that we weren't done already. All in all, if you come here, you won't have bad food or the world's worst service. Just nothing to write home about. I'm not dying to come back anytime soon. read more

I've been here many times and the food is always yummy! The only downside is that the place is REALLY small. During the warmer days, sitting outside is a much roomier option. The raman is absolutely delicious and the sushi is great. I'm giving them 4 stars because I feel like they are a bit overpriced. They have a great selection regardless. read more

My husband and I have been to Japan and love Ramen, Yakatori, and Sushi and we are very particular with all three. We just moved from Los Angeles where there are many great authentic Japanese restaurants and we were worried we wouldn't find anything good in St. Louis. Well, we were proven wrong! We LOVE Robata! It's a small restuarant so not a lot of seating but totally worth the wait. If there's a wait you know is going to be good, right? Do not order the ramen to-go. It was obviously pre-made, likely days before based on the consistency of the noodles, color of the egg and overall taste.. we waited 45 minutes (when estimate was 20-25) and the broth they gave us was still cold. Robata is shamelessly crammed into the confines of a renovated Church's chicken. Don't bother actually eating inside, its dining space is paltry and ill suited to more than parties of 2-3 people. Tonkotsu Ramen starts and $9 with one slice of dry pork, venture into what I'd term the "upsell" part of your menu for an adequate selection of toppings and sides. The broth is savory and salty, and that's about it. The rest of the soup is unremarkable. The egg is boiled and not poached (for the record, real Ramen uses a poached egg). Extra pork was an additional charge, and overcooked to boot. Since there is such a wide variety of toppings you can easily spend upwards of $15 on a bowl of soup. I wonder, what justifies that price? It's clearly not the digs, the ingredients or the effort put into preparation. Maybe sheer trendiness and novelty? The Gyoza are pretty standard, potstickers with a more interesting sauce. They were $4 as an add-on to my Ramen. There is a ton of stuff on the menu, sushi and yakitori for example, but when something as basic as Tonkotsu Ramen is middling at best, what's the point in coming back to try the rest of it? read more

A couple of weeks ago I went back to get my favorite, the chicken udon with shrimp tempura. It was a huge disappointment: the broth was so bland that I could only taste the slightest hint of chicken. I will not get this again. Since October of 2015, numerous other ramen joints have opened up. I no longer feel Robota is the best bang for your buck. Try Midtown Sushi instead. read more

No disrespect to the Chruch's Chicken, but this is a wonderful new tenant for this building and a great addition to Maplewood. The menu is overwhelming in the best way possible. I had a hard time deciding between all delicious-sounding small plates, sushi/sashimi and ramen offerings. I ended up with a little bit of everything, sharing the octopus dumplings and a sushi roll with my husband before diving into the veggie ramen. Needless to say, I left full. No dish stood above the rest because it was all perfect. Service is friendly and fast. I ate in when I visited, but plan to take advantage of the drive-thru to grab take-out soon. read more

Love the food. Excellent, authentic, customer-tailored ramen, generous portions of everything, the sushi has good quality rice and fish. The inadequate size of the establishment is the main drawback. You're elbow-to-elbow with strangers, so plan on not being able to have any private conversations. I had the ramen, regular Tonkotsu with chicken and it was out of this world. It was so good that halfway through my meal I was already trying to decide what I was going to order my next time in. The customer service was terrible and the sushi took forever to come out. My family was finished eating by the time my food came so everyone was sitting there, bored, waiting for me to get finished. Came on a Friday night with a group of 4 and had a 25 minute wait. The restaurant is very small, since it was transformed from a Church's chicken. We got a drink while we waited. They had a decent selection of beer, although it was a little overpriced. We got a sushi roll and ramen. Our server was very helpful in guiding us on recommendations. The sushi was overall good, but nothing to write home about. I really enjoyed my ramen. I got the tonkostu with gyoza and my boyfriend got champon (seafood). We both really enjoyed our food. It was a large serving and we both took home another meals worth of ramen. Only thing I would like next time, is ramen with a little more spice. Very good customer service and they have a nice selection of rolls. They have some of their own and the typical ones. They have a very tender beef skewer that I recommend you try in the tara version I think that's how you pronounce it it's their version of a teriyaki flavor. Very good. It's a little tight in space but again the food was good had the miso corn Ramen and I enjoyed that downside they put like only one small piece of roasted pork. I don't know if that's typical or if they just didn't put enough but good none the less. I would definitely go back. read more

St. Louis can be a tricky city when it comes to trending. The City seemed to be ahead of the curve with craft cocktails, and fried chicken seemed to land the area the middle of the bell curve. The verdict is still out as to where the STL resides with Ramen, but for now, Robata seems to be making up for the past mistakes this city has made making this soup. Not that what Saint Louis has put out prior to this isn't good, it just hasn't really been Ramen in the more traditional sense of city Ramen-Ya's you can find in cities with concentrated Japanese populaces. Prior presentations have been, at best, really good asian inspired soups, but not really ramen per se. It's all about the stock and the noodles, and even the noodles are negotiable since pretty much every one of my favorite ramen restaurants outsource their noodles, so I'm happy to say that Robata does their tonkatsu stock quite well. Their slow cooked pork bone broth has the familiar unctuousness that can only be found from collagens and marrows breaking down over an extended period of time, yielding a rich, thick, deceivingly creamy soup that clings perfectly to whatever style of noodle their customer wants thrown into their soup. ...and may I also add that they seem to be all about adding a metric ton of noodles to their soup. "Kaedama" (asking for a 2nd portion of noodles) seems somewhat unnecessary as there's more than enough noodly goodness in their ramen to assure you'll be fueled up for a good 10 mile run the next morning. Their toppings encompass a pretty wide range of what is being offered in other ramen-ya's, be it corn or spinach, or more regionalized tastes like mustard green or ground pork, while the core familiars of a ramen like soft boiled egg or pork belly are executed quite well, with only a slight critique of the pork being a bit more sweet Chinese bbq style than what I would have expected in my soup. I do miss, however, their lack of offerings like naruto (spiral fish cake), seaweed sheets, or snow grated lard, but these aren't really deal breakers to the work they are currently doing. What attracts me most to this place is how this restaurant does a great job of offering something else that is Japanese to an area that has remained cemented in assigning Japanese cuisine to only Teppanyaki grills and Sushi bars. I can think of a myriad of different places in the area to get sushi, some of them are pretty decent in fact, but despite where this trend lies currently for STL, I'm happy to see there's a shop out there that's doing things differently by offering a quality bowl of ramen at a decent price. read more

This was depressing. Coming from Philadelphia and Boston before that, I didn't expect too much but this is not ramen. They say they have tonkotsu (pork bone) broth. Tonkotsu is a super rich broth that is boiled for sometimes days so that the broth obtains an opaque creamy color. It is thick, almost sticky from the gelatin, and intensely flavorful. I am 99% sure Robata's broth is salty water with milk added to fake the tonkotsu color. The noodles had no bite (this is important, some ramen places won't allow take out orders because the noodles have to be eaten right away to have the characteristic bounciness. By definition ramen is noodles made with alkaline water which gives this texture. Although many ramen places have a variety of noodles). It also took way too long to get our food. Maybe this is why the noodles were so soggy. The bean sprouts were also really dirty. read more

Definitely not made by Japanese chef or trained by a Japanese chef. Not acceptable to use chicken broth for udon. Japanese chef will never do that. Sushi was bland and ended up with food poisoning. I think the food poisoning was because the raw component of my sushi was too warm for too long before I ate it. The reason I say that is because the restaurant was like 80 degrees. Felt good after being out in the 25 degree temps, but probably not a good sushi climate. The Boyfriend and I decided we wanted some late night Ramen and on the recommendation of some local foodies, we ventured into Robata. We are so so happy we did! The Ramen was phenomenal. We had the local noodles in our bowls. I had the Miso Chicken and he had the Shio Pork and we were delighted with our choices!!!
