We ordered the ramen through the iPad and then a robot waiter delivered it to us, which was cool, but doesn't leave much room to say about the service. We came at lunch time on a Saturday, and it wasn't very busy, which was great cause we were seated quickly, but we had some concerns about how long the sushi had been traveling around on the belt...Sushi aside, we loved the ramen and thought it was a big portion, so a fair value for the cost. Great potential. We made a reservation but still had to wait 15 minutes for a table to be cleaned, even though it wasn't busy, just not prepared. Parts of our leather booth were patched with black tape. The floors were slippery, we slipped multiple times on our way to the bathroom and back. Major hazard for children or older diners. The bathroom was dingy and looked like it hadn't been cleaned all week. The sushi train was not fresh, some rolls garnished browned avocado, stale shrimp tempura, or dull sashimi. But they have some unique rolls that we tried and would be great if fresh. The food was okay, I highly recommend the pork potstickers! Ordering from the kitchen seems to be the way to get fresh food. You can order an entire sushi roll from the kitchen (likely made to order) but that takes away from the experience of the train. Service was okay. Given the restaurant model there is little staff interaction after initial seating and drinks. It's possible that we went on an off night, 6:30 on a Wednesday. I would say try at your own risk, but keep your expectations low. read more

This place is pretty chill. When it comes to the ambiance, it looks like they are trying to figure out what they want the astethic to be. It is mixed textures that does not flow together. Maybe this restaurant is still new. The food is fine. The sushi tasted fresh and smooth like butter. The food comes out on a revolving track. You do have the option to order food from the tablet. If you do that, your food will come out on a track. You could also have your food be brought out by a robot. The robot eventually will bring your food, but it's still cool. I was really excited when I heard St. Louis was getting a revolving sushi place, so I went on opening day. Since that fist visit was a bit chaotic and there were many kinks to workout, I decided to give them another chance, weeks later, before sharing my thoughts. While not the best sushi I have ever had, the experience here was fun! Went here with my husband on Saturday night. We had a reservation so we were seated quickly. Not long after being seated, we were given a rundown of how this place works, chopsticks, wasabi, ginger and a container for soy sauce. I have been to a conveyer belt sushi place before, but never seen a conveyer belt that long. Also really liked the serving robots that bring the items ordered from the menu! Food goes around and you pick up what you want. There is a sign that goes around telling you what it is and a place to deposit used plates. Plates are charged by the color they are and you can see the bill as you eat. We ordered one roll off of the menu and got the rest from the conveyer belt. In hindsight, I wouldn't have ordered the roll because the stuff on the belt is smaller quantities of the stuff on the menu. Restaurant is clean and has several booths mostly for 2 but has larger ones as well. Overall quiet enough to have a conversation in there too! I wish you could pay the bill on the digital menu instead of having to call someone over, but maybe they will add that option in time. Having recently visited Japan, I was thrilled to hear we were getting a revolving sushi restaraunt in STL. It's worth noting that this is definitely more on the pricey side for certain items. Be prepared - the cost can stack up pretty quickly depending on the number of plates you grab from the conveyor belt, or from the dishes you choose to order on the tablet. As far as the food, I was pleasantly surprised with the amount of fish that was included in our rolls and nigiri. There was less "filler" and more fish, which I enjoyed. The Cardinals Roll and Bootylicious Roll were two of our favorites. You also can't go wrong with the Spicy Tuna, as it's simple but delicious. Would recommend starting off with the miso soup as well. We went around 8 pm on a Monday so the conveyor belts were starting to look a little bare. However, we mostly ordered off of the tablet anyway so it all worked out. Overall, since Sakatanoya just opened up, I'd anticipate some changes & hopefully some additions to the menu once they are more established. I was able to get a reservation for 10 people but when we arrived they said there are no large tables but they sat us in two that were side by side which was fine. They explained the process to us and we got rolling. They had some good variety on the belt and the sushi was pretty good. Anything we didn't see came quickly when ordered from the tablets. I have been to other revolving sushi restaurants and this one was the most expensive per plate to be honest. Stopped in for an early dinner on a Sunday and we were greeted and seated very quickly. Our server explained to us how to order and view our bill on the kiosk. They also explained the prices of the sushi, with a helpful guide at our table with each price per plate color. There was a pretty good selection on the belt, as well as on the kiosk. I found ordering in the kiosk nice if you wanted a fresh item or something you didn't see on the belt. From ordering to delivery by the robots, it was about 10 minutes for our sashimi and chicken. My sister and I found the sushi to be delicious tasting! However we were not very impressed by the chicken dish as it lacked flavor for me, but that may be a preference. We did see a vegetarian 'sushi' option in the belt as well which I found to be a plus for anyone that may be restricted from having fish. I will note that you should pay attention to the prices on the kiosk vs what is served on the plate. I did notice that a 2 piece salmon nigiri was on the $5.99 plates but salmon nigiri on the kiosk was $6.95. There is an $6.95 plate color, so I was surprised to see that price different. Cool and unique concept. I was excited for St Louis to have its first ever conveyor belt sushi. However, right off the bat I can tell you that this place is not really worth the price. I ordered a few things off of the menu and while they were good in general, it was not anything too special. I don't recommend ordering the scallops, they were actually fishy. There are 4 color-coded plates corresponding to the 4 different prices but honestly I didn't see too many variety on the conveyor belt. The entire time, there were just 2 types of color going around. I feel like if they had more variety for the stuff on the conveyor belt it would have been a little better. This place is kinda pricey for the quality. I have been anticipating the open since it was announced. I am very familiar with revolving sushi and was very excited to have one open in St Louis. The interior is lacking and horrible acoustics so it felt louder than it actually was. The conveyor was surprisingly bare. Usually, those have quite a few things on them, rolls, appetizers, etc. There was also no pricing guide anywhere other than taking a gamble and the plates were very expensive! A 4 roll sushi plate with the basic ingredients should not be nearly $9. Typical plate pricing range can be anywhere from $1.50-5 with the inexpensive plates geared toward items like edamame and higher end going for rolls. None of the rolls on the plates were labeled either. I dropped 80 bucks with my ticket consisting of 2 orange plates valued at 8.99, one roll costing 15.95, two piece salmon nigiri 6.95, and soft drinks being $4! It is way overpriced and never got a drink refill during my stay. Hopefully more items will be added and items reassessed for value as there are quality sushi restaurants offering for half of what was paid out tonight. read more

I wanted to treat my boyfriend to a fun meal for his birthday, and he's a big fan of sushi so we decided on Sakatanoya. The experience itself was as fun as expected- we tried a lot of different sushi off the conveyor belt. We also ordered some dishes that got delivered both by a track above the conveyor belt and by a robot that moves freely around the whole restaurant. It's gimmicky, sure, but unique enough to stand out in St. Louis. The human servers (that phrase does seem a bit dystopian to type) mostly just handle drinks and the check, but ours did check in on us a lot during our meal, which was appreciated. It's a clean looking space, and we got seated at a large table/booth, which was necessary for the amount of dishes we had. The sushi itself was just average (according to my sushi expert boyfriend). This was a very disappointing experience. While I understand that you have recently opened and expected a wait, the service and organization were significantly lacking. Upon arrival, there was no clear indication of where to check in. After finding a staff member at the bar, we were told it would be a few minutes. During our 40-minute wait, we noticed several tables remained uncleaned while employees were sitting in the back on their phones. Furthermore, another couple who arrived after us was seated before we were. Edit: In response to the owners response: I checked my location services and you were correct. It was actually closer to 35 minutes, so my apologies for the inaccurate mislabel of 40 minutes when it was actually only 35. However, it doesn't negate the fact that nobody greeted us, nobody told us that there was less staff or that you weren't officially opened. Absolutely Top Notch Amazing! Whenever we walked inside Sakatanoya, we were greeted by a nice man. After that, we went to our seat. The waiter told us about how this restaurant works, from the revolving conveyor belt with sushi and chocolate cake, to how to order ramen bowls and other things from the tablet. Once our food arrived (it arrived on a little robot that went around) it was quick! You collect your food that you ordered from a revolving robot, and it stops at your table. After you picked up your food, the robot goes back to the kitchen. The food was amazing! The shrimp tempura roll and the tuna roll were amazing to the taste. The plate colors mean different prices depending on what sushi was on it. There was a guide telling the prices of the plate colors and to put back in a dirty plate, you slide it in to the plate thing. read more

We went on a weekend afternoon around 2pm and the host asked if we had reservations - a bit silly since the restaurant was almost completely empty - and showed us to our table. A waitress got our drink orders and then we never saw them again until the check. Ordering is done two ways, either by picking up small plates of sushi on the conveyor belts or by placing an order on the small tablet mounted on one side of the table. The second option by the way is pretty unwieldy if more than one person in the group wants to place an order at the same time, as the tablet is fixed. As for the conveyor system, different plate colors signify different prices and there were four options: $2.99, $3.50, $5.99, $6.95. The cheapest plates were stuff like California rolls (2 pieces) and desserts (a suspicious looking carrot cake and some stale sesame balls). Any nigiri were usually the most expensive for 2 pieces, so expect to pay $3 at least per nigiri. It's also worth noting that any conveyor item could be ordered through the tablet as well, which we did for certain items that looked a little worse for the wear on the belt. Plates are deposited into a scanner that automatically tabulates the total for you and you can check it at any time. With the caveat that we didn't go at peak hours, my biggest complaint was that the fish and rice were simply a bit stale. The conveyor belt model is trendy and gimmicky for sure but its success really hinges on a constant cycle of replacement which doesn't work unless there are a minimum number of diners, which seems unlikely besides weekend dinner hours. We had a salmon nigiri plate and St. Louis arch roll off the belt and bootylicious (soft shell crab) and spicy tuna roll from the tablet. At the end of your meal you can use the tablet to call the waiter. Paper bill but they take your card and ring you up on a tablet. Tip increments start at 18% and they tip on tax. read more

I love conveyer belt sushi. When I lived in Kansas City, there was a sushi shop with a little train that went around the bar delivering sushi. On vacation in San Francisco, we specifically sought out sushi delivered around a little river at a bar on boats. So I was thrilled to see St Louis finally get one!! In talking to one of the employees tonight it sounds like they had far more customers than they ever anticipated and didn't have enough staff for the volume they experienced. I really commend the owner for closing briefly, regrouping, and responding to the feedback. We came tonight for New Year's Eve. I was really impressed by the level of technology. The conveyer belt goes around the entire restaurant so much larger than I'd experienced before. I was surprised by the diversity of items on the small plates. The small plate prices ranged from $2.99 to $6.99. Even with eating what I can only describe as an aggressive amount of plates...aggressive...our bill was less than $90 which is honestly what I generally expect for dining out in this day and age. Being more selective would certainly result in a more economical bill. Food that is ordered off the regular menu arrives with a little robot delivery. I actually appreciated that the staff didn't need to check in constantly because you can just call when you need something. I love conveyor belt sushi places and was surprised when this opened up here in St. Louis. (Also a little wary -- we are landlocked in the middle of the country...) My daughter and I came in for a late lunch. We stood at the front for a fair amount of time before we were even greeted much less seated. The place was maybe 2/3 full and I saw 4 workers. After we got our table, we watched the sushi go round and round. We ended up getting 5 different plates, with one duplication. We would have gotten more but the variety wasn't great... that, and some pieces just did not look worthwhile. I love (good) sushi for its flavor but also for its artistry. Granted, I get this isn't Matsuhisa, or Nobu (talking NYC) but so many of the rolls were cut in different sizes, not tightly rolled, just slapped together. The red velvet cake (huh?) should not even have been on the conveyor belt, it looked so shipwrecked. I was shocked that they had only been opened since December. The slot that you put your empty plates in was FILTHY. There were fingerprints all over the signage on the conveyor belt, not to mention the misspellings in the signs. I think the plastic covers over the sushi plates gets reused (hopefully washed first) as they were water spotted. So... the workers were friendly, though seemed inexperienced. The interior was okay.
