I had my initial hesitations thinking it might be some basic pub food. Who knew this restaurant out in Gravenhurst is better than many Toronto restaurants in the city. One of my fav meals in a while. This Oar recently undergone a new concept change to Lamorna. While they still kept the Oar as their name given the familiarity and reputation of the previous restaurant concept, the menu and indoor decor has completely changed with a new chef in the last couple months. The menu is farm to table and it rotates weekly, and I can really taste the difference, which explains the more premium but reasonable price. Note a burger will always be on the menu and we really like their dry age burger, rich and the accompanying (what looks like hand/in-house cut) fries are so delicious, I wouldn't mind ordering more on the side. We also dined at their outdoor patio so our pups could dine with us. They so kindly brought over a water bowl for the dogs too! Towards the end of the meal, chef Ben came out personally to greet us and we can feel the passion and care he puts into his food. We asked about how he came to this restaurant and his inspo for his food and he told us it's from his travels. eg. why the schnitzel is thicker because he enjoys the thick katsu he had from Japan. He told us he recently sold two of his restaurants and decided to head up this restaurant after his travels. The chef actually goes around and sources ingredients directly from the farms and locally. We also appreciated the fresh pasta and thick cut schnitzel. We also absolutely love the eggplant and the croquettes too. Actually everything we had was a highlight and that's rare for me to find all the dishes impressive at a restaurant. Highly recommend order their bread service so you can use the bread to clean up the sauces from the remaining plates, as it's not included by default. I also love the charm of the plates and cutlery. They open a box of different knives you can pick a knife to use. Highly recommend this spot! The attention to detail, quality and personal service makes this spot special.

All of us were delightfully surprised by the food and the overall experience. They had picnic tables on the patio and plenty of tables/booths inside + a bright large enclosed room beside the patio. Service was warm and friendly, who was attentive to my son and my family. She recommended the burger. They patty was grounded in house and seasoned perfectly and you can choose the fries, salad or daily soup as a side. You can also upgrade to poutine or onion rings (which looked good from a nearby table). Spring salad was well presented and fresh. Prices were higher than comparative restaurants in Toronto (eg Poutine is $15) but it feels like everything in Muskoka is pricier! A gem in Gravenhurst, I would recommend to stop by on your way in/out of Muskoka! It's also right across the street from Sawdust Brewery if you fancy a brew before or after!

We were greeted at the front by the hostess and seated by our waiter. The patio set up was stunning and since it was snowing outside the fireplace warmed up the space. We came in at about 4pm which was on the tail end of lunch but beginning of dinner, so we were able to order from the dinner menu. We ordered the prime rib sandwich with lobster bisque soup, Caesar salad and miso glazed bone marrow. We were very disappointed when the bone marrow came out, we had thought it would be hot and easily spreadable but we were sadly mistaken. It was topped with a shrimp ceviche, caviar and micro greens. I felt the dish was two separate items smashed into one - the bone marrow was cold and chunky, tasting like you were eating chunks of fat mixed with the shrimp. We were interested in the Caesar salad because the waiter mentioned it was popular dish - but when this all came out, it looked & tasted like a regular salad. The prime rib sandwich wasn't anything spectacular and the lobster bisque tasted watered down. We finished off our meal with a London fog cream brulee which was delicious and a pistachio cheesecake. Overall we weren't fans of the food but we fell in love with the stunning decor & atmosphere.

They've renovated the Main Lodge and they are renovating the other places too. We were in King Room…read moreof the main lodge. The views were good but the balcony was not clean. The chairs and railing was full of dust. View from Living Room was very beautiful but from the balcony the view was ok since the trees are in full bloom so it covered the whole lake view. I liked the king bed... slept in peace. But you can hear noises from other rooms. I was able to hear snoring of a man who was staying just beside our room. The views from downstairs are really stunning. But yes the Muskoka chairs they have beside the lake were not clean at all. Spiders were all over the chair and they made webs. If you want to sit then you have clean it by yourself. They have adventure area which I liked the most. But the problem is their check in time. The check in time is 4 pm but usually it's 3 pm. When we reached the resort we got the keys after signing a paper and when we got the the room it was not opening because of the updated lock. Our room was on 3rd floor so my husband had to go to the reception area to get a person for opening the door. They already told us before that if we will break something or do something then they'll charge us for that so we were careful with the lock and not pressing it harder but turns out you to press it harder while opening the door. While doing this it was 5:15 pm... and while settling in and watching the views of Muskoka lake it was 8:15 pm when we found the adventure area and decided to play table tennis the receptionist guy told us that we have to return the table tennis stuff before 9 pm. When we saw our watch it was already 8:30 pm... so we played just for 20 minutes. We were there just for 1 night because we were celebrating our 5th Anniversary so I guess to do all the stuffs you have to stay at least 2 nights. The main issue was shower water was cold as ice while the water of washbasin was cold as well as warm. So washbasin was fine but if you have to take shower then you cannot. Thank god we were there just for one night and came back home the next afternoon. While booking the lady told me that golf is complimentary but upon reaching she told us that they don't have stuff of golf if we want to play then we can go to some other golf course which was nearby. And since it was not "the season" so you cannot do any water sport too! So basically we drove 3 hours from Toronto just to see the lake! And now after writing all the points I'm thinking that May season is good to visit Clevelands House Resort because after May the rates are too high which is not worthy for this place.

I went to Cleveland's House on an October weekend for a bachelor party…read more It was low season and so we pretty much had the whole resort to ourselves. There were 14 of us and we were able to book The Manor house in its entirety. The resort had numerous facilities to accommodate activities such as golf, basketball, volleyball, tennis, badminton, shuffle board, croquet, soccer, football, mini golf... the list goes on... There was a pro shop where you could take out sports equipment for free. They didn't require us to sign anything out and let us keep the equipment overnight... perhaps that is why they have such a meager selection: there were only 3 tennis and 2 badminton rackets, one basketball... how does this place function during peak season? There was baseball equipment - lots of left and right handed gloves but 2 bases were missing. The staffer at the pro shop wasn't interested in talking to us... focused on her Macbook instead. The hours they were open were from 8am-4pm but frequently they would close earlier without letting us know. We complained and the front desk staff helped us with accessing the pro shop. Staff, in general, were still fairly nice... they allowed us to play 9 rounds of golf twice for the price of one round. Free rentals and golf carts! It rained over the weekend so it made it difficult to engage in many activities since courts were outside. The pool and hot tub were both closed for the weekend.

When I saw their bi-weekly special of beef goulash ($39) on the menu, I was torn... do I go with…read morethe popular schnitzel or order the goulash and risk disappointment again? Luckily, my husband agreed to share. I find most Torontonian goulash tastes like beef stew with a sprinkle of paprika. Chef Henrie brought me back to Europe. Yes, his recipe contained lots of paprika but the tomatoey sauce also had a rich depth to it that was the perfect pairing for the boiled spaetzle. The tender beef was left in large chunks as was the hearty soft potato. Even the sauerkraut was surprising - served hot, not overly acidic, and had an underlying richness that my husband thinks may be bacon, but I can't place. Who would have thought I'd like fried mushrooms ($14)? I certainly didn't. Then I bit into one of the hot steaming finely breaded fungi, I continued reaching for more of the crispy juicy nuggets. The pickle-filled tartare sauce made it even better. Tip: save this sauce for the goulash, it goes wonderfully with the potatoes. With several schnitzels on Chef Henrie's menu, the Hunter schnitzel ($38) was a delicious choice. The thinly pounded pork was covered with finely ground breadcrumbs and fried until crispy but still very moist. The mushroom sauce was not overly salted so it didn't cover the taste of the meat but was seasoned enough to compliment the fluffy spaetzle. The schnitzels also arrive with a side salad and their Caesar was citrusy and light. The breadcrumbs were crushed into small pieces so that it mixes into the creamy leaves for texture. It's not all meat and potatoes at Chef Henrie, the menu also incorporates dishes for vegetarians like the sage and brown butter gnocchi ($28). It's a sizeable portion and a nice consistency - pillowy but not overly mushy. If you like a sweet and savoury dish this, is it. Take your main to go if you must as you have to try their desserts. The apple strudel ($12) is a lighter option with the paper-thin pastry that encapsulates so much apple! The spiced filling contains a mixture of mashed and slices of the fruit for contrast and the whipped cream was the perfect sweetener. The bienenstich ($12) was a bit richer, a fluffy honey cake sandwiching custard and covered with a caramelized almond and coconut topping. While it looks like a plain vanilla cake, it's a great mixture of textures and flavours.
