I saw Dr. Dickey for a glasses and contacts prescription. He touched and held my thighs while examining me, which was an inappropriate violation of personal space. He then compared my lack of success in finding contacts to difficulties in dating, saying the line "it would be like saying all women are liars and cheaters just because one woman was a liar and cheater". He described himself in favorable terms, saying repeatedly that he was "very good" at prescribing contacts -- but the contacts he prescribed for me worsened my vision. I will not be back. read more

I had a great experience here recently. Dr Dickey has late afternoon appointments which is good for us 9-5 ers. He is knowledgeable and warm and funny. I had the same eye doctor is Boston for years and when I moved to LA I struggled to find someone who could help me. I purchased frames and Robin was helpful as well. Turnaround time one week. I've been going to Dr. Dickey for several years since my last eye doctor retired. A friend of mine had raved about Dr. Dickey, so I decided to give him a shot. Dr. Dickey runs a small practice, and it's noticeable in the personal way that he and his team interact with you. Don't let "small" dissuade you--he gives one of the most thorough eye exams I've ever had, starting with a test to check peripheral vision, another that scans your eyes to check for macular degeneration and other things. Dr. Dickey will spend a good amount of time with you--I never feel rushed. He takes the time to really make sure you have the right prescription. Additionally, he makes sure you are an informed patient, explaining the scan so you know what he's looking for, tell you about his treatment plan for you, etc. I've never ordered glasses, so I can't speak to that personally, but ordering contacts has always been a snap. I always enjoy my visits with Dr. Dickey and look forward to seeing him again next year! read more

I came here with my husband to have our yearly eye exam. We were recommended Dr. Dickey by a friend and his entire family have been coming here for years. I have only been to an OD two times before because I never had eye problems but as I get older I am doing that old person thing by moving things away to be able to read. Dr Dickey has a couple machines that I have never seen before. One reminds me of a video game with lights that faintly flash in different areas and you click a hand held clicker when you see it. It is like playing Asteriods but there is no high score. :) He has another machine that takes a photo of your eyeball which is really freaky when you see how detailed it is...blood veins and all. Oh one more thing is that puffer thing that we all hate is a newer hand held version and it doesn't puff as hard as the older types. Dr Dickey and his staff are super friendly and they actually had me laughing a few times. I wouldn't go anywhere else again. Oh...yeah...Cheri needs reading glasses but I knew that already. read more

I've been to Dr. Dickey once for my annual check up. The experience was fine, no complaints. A solid 4-star experience. This review is solely based on my last experience I had with Robin, the frames specialist. For anyone who has been to an Optometrist before, I'm sure is aware that it's a common practice for the Optometrist's office to give a 20% discount on frames and sunglasses to their patients. I ordered a pair of Ray-Ban aviator sunglasses through Robin. When I went to pick up the sunglasses, Robin advised me that the price was $345 and that he was going to actually give me a greater than 20% discount, bringing the sunglasses down to $245 total. More than 20% off? I was excited. I didn't think anything about the cost at the time, paid for the purchase and walked out. It wasn't until I sat down in my car when I felt that the price was not right, so I looked it up on Ray-Ban's official website. As it turned out, Ray-Ban's everyday retail price was $245. I should have received 20% off of $245, not $345. I went back into the office and advised Robin about the price mistake. His response was, "that's the price ($345) in the book." I told him that I looked up the price on the Ray-Ban website. He then said that prices on reseller websites could be lower. I advised him that the I was referring to the price on Ray-Ban's official website and showed him the webpage. He became agitated. I asked him if he could adjust the price and charge me 20% off of the correct retail price of $245. With an attitude, he told the girl at the front desk to refund me the difference. Afterwards, his final words to me in an angry tone were "I'm not going to do this again!" I was thinking to myself, do what again? Rip off your customers? Note, Robin never offered an apology for the overcharge and was only defensive when confronted with the error. I'm a firm believer that anyone can make a mistake. A simple and immediate apology would have been sufficient and would have showed in my eyes that this was just an oversight, plane and simple. Robin, becoming defensive, agitated and angry without an apology, leads me to believe the overcharge was intentional. The take away here is this...if you need basic optometric treatments and exams, Dr. Dickey is fine. No complaints. If you're thinking about purchasing frames or sunglasses, BE VERY AWARE, do your research and know the actual retail price of your frame, so that Robin doesn't try to rip you off. Unfortunately for Dr. Dickey, having such a dishonest employee on staff has caused me to obtain Optometric care elsewhere. read more

I went to the guy at the advice, er, insistence of my wife. I didn't fall in love with the place at first, and my glasses didn't have the right rx in them sooooo.. I called and complained, and they really stepped up to the plate. I went back, the doc spent over an hour with me, and it turns out the rx was wrong, but it was from my OTHER OD. Either way, they made me happy, and I will be going back to them going forward. read more

When I first moved to LA, I was referred to a ophthalmologist near UCLA that was supposed to be the "best in town." I went to see her to get some new contact lenses, and literally after 14 failed attempts to fit me with lenses, she told me that my astigmatism had gotten so bad that I could no longer wear soft contacts, and would have to switch to hard lenses or just wear glasses. I was devastated, as I didn't want to do either. My neighbor suggested I go see Dr. Dickey--right in the neighborhood. On the first attempt at fitting me with soft lenses, he got it about 95% right. On the second attempt, we were at 100%. It was unbelievable! A few years later, when I told him I was nervous about surfing with my very expensive astigmatism-correcting lenses (which were one-year wear) so I would take them out and surf with nothing at all, he asked "would you rather have disposable lenses?" And BAM! Just like that I had disposables, which meant I could surf and actually see! He's so good at what he does! I have now been seeing Dr. Dickey for about 15 years. He is consistently excellent, and going to see him is a delight. He's warm, friendly, funny and it feels like visiting a small town doctor, because he really remembers you. Oh, and I found out on my last visit that ordering contacts through him is actually less expensive than ordering on 1-800-CONTACTS, which I'd started to do after losing my vision insurance! read more

I rarely give five stars for anything but I've been going to Dr. Dickey for the past ten years and he has consistently been stellar. I've had a few occasions when I haven't had time for a visit but I wanted his advice on the best eye drops or how to deal with minor conjunctivitis and he has returned my call the same day!! (That's why I decided to write a review because I was so impressed.) Dr. Dickey is very knowledgable and has put my nervous self at ease with his sometimes goofy but always good spirited humor. Robin has also been very great at helping me pick glasses and I constantly get compliments on my sunglasses which are Robin's own line. The front desk staff is also very responsive, which is rare in many offices. I know my messages and questions are getting answered because they are passing them through. I have referred a few people already and plan to refer more who have been annoyed by practices that are impersonal and nickel and dime you. In my experience, this office is the exact opposite. read more

I feel compelled to share that I just had the best eye visit ever. Dr. Dickey is funny (seriously!) and kind. I liked how he walked me through scans of my retina and explained to me all the funny dots. The office is so charming and is staffed by very helpful folks. I also loved how Dr. Dickey walked me through my vision insurance and gave me advice on the 'right' way to order contacts/glasses to maximize my use of coverage. Great glasses selection too. My wife and I were given a recommendation from one of her coworkers to head to Dr. Dickey for eye care in the Santa Monica area. As someone who visits the optometrist biannually for standard contact lens/glasses appointments as well as preventative glaucoma screenings (runs in my family) it was important to me to find someone I not only liked personally but felt was clinically versed in the more serious side of eye care beyond just vision correction. Having been to several clinics in the past including specialist ophthalmology offices, my expectations were high. I could not have been more impressed by my experience at Dr. Dickey's office - the staff was friendly, the office was modern and well-maintained, but still much more intimate and comfortable than most offices you visit. As a doctor, his personal manner is awesome - super-friendly, funny, and personable, and he has a unique way of translated the more complicated eye anatomy and diseases in a transparent way. At the same time, the level of analysis and equipment the office provides and his experience and clear expertise are of the highest level. My company switched vision insurance providers, and next to nobody in Santa Monica takes the new plan. Dr Dickey was one of two who did. When I saw so many stellar reviews on Yelp, I booked my appointment but kept my expectations low - I'd had the same optometrist for 10 years and was really hesitant to change. But I was so pleasantly surprised - Dr Dickey was more than thorough, very knowledgeable, and discussed the challenges of getting a proper correction for my 50-year-old eyes in great detail. The prescription he wrote me was spot-on - no going back for adjustments necessary. And, bonus - for a small extra charge, Dr Dickey uses a computer gadget instead of those awful dilating eyedrops during the exam. read more

Best OD ever! His motto is "minimal correction" so that your eyes only receive the help they actually need. His specialty is "hard to please" eyes, so if you are having trouble finding the right contact lenses Dr. Dickey is your man. He also has a keen consideration for personal budgets, which is rare. Before Dr. Dickey, I was on expensive toric lenses with different strengths in each eye. He determined that my astigmatism would be better treated with an aspheric lens and also that my eyes would be healthier with the same strength in both eyes. He saved me $300/year in lens costs, and I see better than before! Similarly, when I was ready to get a pair of glasses, he offered many different lens options to make sure that I picked one that fit my budget and also the look I wanted. I've since recommended Dr. Dickey to 3 of my coworkers and friends, and they are all fans now, too. read more

I do not have a lot of experience with optometrist but from my experience this place is great. I was getting super bad head aches from reading documents on my computer for hours each day. So I went to get my eyes checked for the first time in five years. I picked Dr. Dickey mostly out of connivence, but could not be more happy with my choice. The visit was quick and he was on time. Dr. Dickey explained to me what was going on with my eyes and the solution that would make my life better. I was in and out in under 45 minutes; even with an initial eye exam and picking out new frames! Their selection of frames is fantastic. I found a super cute pair of purple/pink Dior frames that I fell in love with. My glasses were ready within a couple of days and I have been headache free ever since! read more

Boyfriend came home from his eye appointment and said you have to switch to Dr. Dickey. I did and I love this guy. Been a patient of his for about 2 years now. He's super friendly, talkative, informative, and funny. I was trying to figure out how to get the most from my insurance benefit, he explained the pros/cons of upgrading soft contacts versus staying with the old ones that work, and he totally helped me get two extra boxes with this rebate thing. You just feel like he's on your side...and makes annual eye appointments entertaining. I recommend him to all my coworkers now! Good customer service from office staff as well. Metered parking on Montana Ave., or the side streets are free for 2 hrs I think (read the signs, all I know is I didn't pay anything to park). read more
