Neato! We checked this out yesterday because we ended up being too tired to drive to Bay To Breakers at 5 AM. We slept in and visited the river instead. Boy, was that smart! So fun, for the most part. The intake center has limited parking; in fact, we parked on the street and there is no sidewalk, so that was kinda scary. The stairs going up have little fishes mosaicked into the cement, and the fountain is really, seriously, cool. Someone else called it "whimsical", and I agree wholeheartedly. My toddler, who is deathly afraid of cold water spraying her face and was the only child who DIDN'T play in the sprinklers at a bbq we went to on Saturday, was laughing her ass off and dancing around with the other kids on Sunday. Even after getting blasted in the face when she was inspecting a spigot hole. Coolness. We also trotted down the bridge to the actual intake facility, which was made to look like a ship docked on the river. Soooo nice. Great view of the two rivers where they converge. Lots of a-holes out on the waterways though. FYI, if you are boating or ski-dooing or whatever else those a-holes were out there doing, YOU MAKE WAKES. These are not always FUN for everyone else. Also, you stupid a-holes (no one on Yelp, of course), STAY ON THE RIGHT. Same rules as road rule, jerks. If you cut a big boat off because you are too stupid to breathe air, you deserve the drowning and propeller-to-the-head you will get in return. My other complaint has nothing to do with river goers or the intake facility itself, but that my kid was nearly killed while she was dancing in the fountain by a teenager on a bike (said teen's sullen friend shot me the "Die, Old Bossy Lady" look when I screamed "watch out!!!" 10 times in a row) This is because there were really stupid teenage bicyclists(later, there were full adults with their families in tow doing the same thing, so it's not related to being a teenager per se) who were circling, ON THEIR BIKES, all the little kids who were in the fountain. Yeah, it's fun. So park your bike and join in, because you are DEFINITELY not looking out for anyone smaller than your wheels when you are grinning in the spray. There needs to be signs that say 'walk your bike' when you ride up to the fountain and bridge entrance, because people assume (possibly they are correct, but I saw a nice bike parking area right near the fountain that would arguably mean to a common sense sort that you should PARK your BIKE) that they can just "ride through" to the other side of the bike path. The path, incidentally, also runs under the bridge. To me, it makes sense that you have OPTIONS to ride towards the fountain, or under the bridge, and that if there are KIDS ACTUALLY PLAYING in the fountain, you get off your goddamn bike and walk it across unless you are an a-hole. Unfortunately, there is many, many an a-hole near the river. Sigh. Fun place though; keep your eyepeeled for the a-holes.

The last couple of years more often than not the gates have been closed and locked, preventing walking out on the structure toward the river.

The bulbs were big, bright, full of color and fragrance. I loved walking along the paths and seating at the multiple wooden benches inside and around the perimeter of the garden. With over 1,200 roses bushes in full bloom, I did not encounter any bees, there was not a lot of people and there was plenty of shade and picture taking opportunities. It was the perfect horticulture hideaway to spend my day.

There's a lot here, the park, the zoo, Fairytale Town, picnic benches, playground, plenty of areas for sports, and even performances. There's a good amount of designated parking as well, and while it's an expansive park, it's pretty easy to navigate. We stopped by on an early morning to take out dog for a walk while the weather was still on the cooler side. We explored and kept mostly to the sidewalks. Other people in the park were friendly as we walked past and there were a lot of other people with dogs as well. We noticed that at about 10am the park got a lot more crowded, so we were glad we were on our way out versus just arriving. If you're looking for less people early is definitely better. We had a lot of fun exploring and getting some steps in here.

Just as with furry children, human ones also have tons of energy that must be let out. So instead of having them cooped up, I'd will myself to take them to the park even when I'm bone tired after a long week of work. William Land Park is THE best place to help kids burn off energy so they can simmer down and sleep well after they have all the fun. It's really not a bad thing, I don't want to sound like I'm begrudged to take my kids out to play, but you know how sometimes you just want to veg out at home after work and esp on weekends? Yup. But my wife's always right that it's better to just suck it up and take the littles out and let me run wild than to fight the inevitable and try to keep them occupied at home. So we make the trek and we're never disappointed, even when parking can be challenging (hint: don't go at peak times on the weekend, esp Saturday mid morning to early afternoon). With all that said, WLP is really a great place. It's huge, first of all, with a big free playground on the North West side of the park, then of course there's the Sacramento Zoo which is just the most iconic place in Land Park. Then for littles there's Fairy Tale Town which was really a hit with my kids when they were younger. And when they got older and wanted more excitement, Funderland was the place to be for several years with all the roller coaster and other amusement park rides that were good enough for their age when they still got the thrill of being up and down and thrown around on a coaster or a spinning tea cup or a rocking pirate ship. And it helps that both places are pretty affordable for a fun day out. What's impressive about Land Park though, is that there's something for everyone in this 166.5 acres regional park. I looked up some stats and it features 23 picnic areas, 2 softball fields, 1 lighted Little League field, 3 baseball fields, 2 bantam soccer fields, 1 full-sized soccer field, 1 basketball court, adventure play area (the free playground), tot play area with free wading pool (in the same area as the playground), an indoor community facility, several restrooms, several ponds, a 3.4 mile jogging trail, the Ampitheater, fee-based pony rides, and 5 garden areas including the WPA Rock Garden, 3 groves, 2 parking lots, the well loved Golf course, the Sac Zoo which my kids really loved as kids, Fairytale Town and Funderland as mentioned above. In fact, for awhile I was playing volleyball here every Saturday, it must've been a couple of years from spring through fall and even over the winter if the weather was good and the grass wasn't soggy/ground wasn't muddy from rain. I had a great time playing vball with young'uns half my age as well as those who were quite a few years older than me and yet were so fit they literally kept me on my toes. There were definitely some talented folks on the vball courts and it was all volunteer organized and free to join and play. I might have to go back to it before I'm totally out of commission. All in all, William Land Park is very unique and truly is one of Sacramento's most historic and special places. We drive by often, but don't go there enough, and really need to get out and get some fresh air and exercise on the beautiful grounds of this local gem.

However, I was having lunch in the area last week and realized I have never reviewed it. The highlight of the park for me is the beautiful World Peace Rose Garden, which is especially stunning right now because all of the roses are in bloom. The gardens' central fountain creates a peaceful atmosphere and makes this a wonderful place to relax and walk around or sit and just enjoy the scenery. I almost always have my dog with me and she loves watching all the squirrels in the park and there are so many settings that make for a great photo ops of her. There are also lots of great manicured paths for me to walk with her. Another thing that I love about this park is the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. As the mother of a veteran, I am always very moved by this tribute to those who have served. The statues are incredibly well done and it's a beautiful space for some quiet reflection. Parking can sometimes be hard and expensive, but it's a lovely park where I am rarely bothered, no matter how busy it can get at times. I definitely recommend stopping by if you haven't already and I will continue to return to this park again and again whenever I'm downtown.

We even came on a windy day, and it was still a wonderful place to be. It is so spacious that it's the perfect spot to fly kites. A few of us were flying kites together, and it was such a relaxing, heartwarming experience. It's incredibly family and dog friendly, super roomy, and has so much going on. Because it's so clean and well maintained, this might just become the park I bring my kids to most often, and it is definitely a top choice for hosting future family events! It is perfect for a workout, sports activities, or just letting the kids play. I love the layout, especially how they designed the two separate grass areas where one sits at a lower elevation, while the other is level with the rest of the park. But honestly, what really blew me away was the restroom. I know that sounds like an exaggeration, but I'm serious! So many park restrooms are cold, dark, dirty, and lacking privacy. This one felt downright luxurious. It is completely temperature controlled, which was especially nice since it was breezy outside! It was warm, well lit, exceptionally clean, and had absolutely no odor. It even sounded like it had a great ventilation system running. The only minor downside was the lack of toilet seat covers, but that's an easy fix. The entire park feels pretty new with a beautiful, modern design, conveniently located right behind the Sky River Casino. Highly recommend checking it out! Rate: 10/10
