We hired Christian Onyemem CPA Firm, PLLC to handle our taxes after being impressed by how they…read moresold their services. Unfortunately, our experience has been incredibly frustrating from the very beginning. The first red flag came before we even signed on. They canceled our initial consultation moments before the meeting, after both my wife and I had planned our entire day around it. We almost walked away at that point, but after meeting with other firms, decided to give Christian's team another chance. That turned out to be a mistake. The communication has been shockingly poor. We are constantly told we will hear back within a certain timeframe, and then hear nothing at all. Every step of the process requires repeated follow ups from us, and even then it can take days to get a response. At one point, we showed up to a scheduled meeting only to be told our return could not be located. Most concerning of all, the tax returns they prepared contained massive errors and omissions. Our tax strategist at Keystone CPA reviewed the returns and genuinely asked whether this firm had ever handled a return involving real estate before. They said it was one of the worst returns they had ever seen. Among the many issues Keystone identified on April 2nd: Rental income was incorrectly reported on Schedule C rather than Schedule E, which would have triggered unnecessary self-employment tax. Approximately $169,000 in available bonus depreciation from our cost segregation study was not applied at all, which was the entire reason we commissioned the study in the first place. Our primary residence was listed as a rental property on Schedule E. Noah's earned income was listed as $0 on Form 2441, eliminating our dependent care credit entirely, and childcare expenses were reported as $3,000 instead of the $18,000 we actually paid. The S-Corp return had multiple errors including misclassified officer compensation, a missing Form 1125-E, an unreported California PTET payment, and a K-1 income mismatch between the personal and business returns. What makes this even more concerning is how the correction process unfolded. After Keystone sent their detailed findings on April 2nd, we received no response until we followed up on April 6th. We were then promised the corrected return "by tomorrow," a promise that was broken multiple times over the following weeks. Our tax strategist went above and beyond what we pay them to do by personally meeting with the firm to help ensure everything was corrected properly. The process still stretched from early April to early June, directly impacting a home renovation we had been planning around receiving our refund. The firm's response to our request for a partial fee reduction was to take credit for ultimately filing accurate returns. While we are glad the returns were eventually accepted and resulted in a $23,452 refund, that outcome only happened because an outside firm caught fundamental errors before filing and spent weeks helping correct them. Declining any accountability for that experience says a lot. Overall, this has been one of the most stressful and disappointing professional service experiences we have ever had. I would strongly recommend staying far away.
