*EDIT* Okay, so Stan informs me that the frying pans have a lifetime guarantee. Yeeeah, I suppose that explains the price. Raise a star, and another for showing initiative. But might I suggest some signage advertising that fact? I know I would've felt better about buying it to begin with if I'd known that from the start. (You know how rare that is, a lifetime guarantee? I know of only two other items that have that, Zippo lighters and Jansport backpacks.) And he also says Robert's donates to the HA Free Clinic among others, which is one of my favorite charities, okay another star. No five stars though! I'm still pissed about that 5%! Honestly though, these guys could go shop at Home Depot, buy their goods at retail price there and sell it in their store for double, and it would still be cheaper than what's in there right now. Bullshit bullshit bullshit. Now, it is a common thing on Haight to mark up items so as to leech monies from the tourists. Then, the merchants ally with each other and give one another discounts so as to keep the neighborhood money in the neighborhood, which is good for the economy. This way, touristas pay the bills while fellow Haighters get a fair price. The standard discount is 10%, with many other stores giving a bigger discount than that. The neighborhood discount at Robert's is a miserly 5%. Yeah, that's right, five fucking percent. That doesn't even take off sales tax. Whoever thought up that little gem is a greedy poots. Haight is a community, Robert, and you need to give back to the community if you want my business. And there are many who agree with me. Robert's Hardware's saving grace belongs to Stan. He's that guy that everyone is talking about in the other reviews. He knows his shit, contributes to the well-being of the neighborhood, and is an all-around awesome fellow. If I was reviewing Stan alone, he would get 5 stars hands down. In fact, it is a common strategy of mine to go ask this guy what I should do with my household problem, pay attention to the items he points out, then trot on down to Cole Hardware to purchase them. Cole Hardware has the opposite problem. They have fair prices (still not as cheap as the big guys, but more reasonable) but their staff for the most part are a bunch of clueless buffoons. I like this place a lot! I go here even though SF Hardware (Hayes & Divis) is way closer. The staff is always super helpful. Once I got some glass cut here and even though they usually only do square cuts they were nice enough to do a cut on a more than awkwardly shaped hand mirror and it turned out great! They have a really great selection for a smaller hardware store, I've always been able to find whatever I went in for. And I bought the sweetest toolbox here! Yay! read more

Roberts Hardware , The staff has always friendly and helpful. Have been going in there for well over 10 years. I have been known to measure wood wrong and have them cut it. Even though it was my fault. They always re-cut it for me at no cost. And don't give me any shit about it. That alone is a plus! They also carry all the stuff that these old house's here need that you cant find in the big box stores. He let me use his computer to pull up my email with all the pertinent info (forgot the sticky with info at home!), called the company, and double-checked that the opener he'd sell me was the right one. Well stocked (I was looking for a large piece of plywood, the two hardware stores that were closer to me didn't have it and then I found Roberts Hardware online). Helped me figure out exactly what I needed. Good prices. Especially big thanks to Roger (who I am going to bring some cookies to!!) who took extra time to get my big piece of plywood strapped to the top of my car. He has some great stories too. And something really nice about this shop, they did a Christmas party with a Santa (Roger) and collected 3 pallets of presents for disadvantaged youth. Just a very nice shop. So I get it I look like a Hippie but I spend a lot of money in this place in part because I live literally 50 yards away and I value local businesses & what they provide to the community. That being said I have been treated in the sub human realm and it's ridiculous. I made the mistake of asking how much the soil out in front (literally on the side walk on a U boat). When I asked he fired off "there all priced, I don't know!" So there was no one in line, in he front of the store or anywhere else to be seen. I went outside and started to look and after a few minutes looking I realized none of them were priced. I thought maybe he would come out to help but no...So I am off to Lowe's unfortunately because these people can't seem to figure out how to treat someone like a human unless they dress a certain way, with certain clear markers of affluence. Ask for Christian, he has blue hair and he's amazing. Like most hardware stores in the city, it was slightly cramped with limited selection. The staff was friendly and helpful. I went to Robert's for nails, which you would think is simple enough, but not when you see cases upon cases of nails in every size and shape. So there I was, like a nun in a sex shop, clearly out of my element and staring at all these nails in a daze. This place is our neighborhood hardware store and we couldn't be more fortunate. They have almost everything we could ask for (within reason), but the best part is the staff. We typically come in with some hair-brained idea that we describe to them without the necessary jargon for them to fully understand. And, without laughing, they guide us into the simplest and most economical way to achieve what we are hoping to achieve. We love them and are lucky to have them as a resource. This past weekend, they helped up move and rebuild a conduit line from where it ran in the basement to where it entered the house as well as install a motion sensor on the light switch attached to the conduit. Great local hardware store and my go to when I need a item quick. They're always friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable. I'm not a handy person, so I can't talk about depth of knowledge, but I like 'em. Also, they've offered to order parts when they don't have items. Sure, you can't compare prices to a Home Depot, but you're paying for location, convenience, and neighborhood service. These guys are life-savers! We just moved into a 1907 flat and, fortunately, Robert's is within walking distance. The previous owner had long-neglected some leaky plumbing, and had trashed the kitchen cabinets, and not only did Robert's have everything I needed to correct these many sins, they cheerfully provided the advice I needed to make sure I was doing the job correctly. I'm not a great handyman, but I now have non-leaky kitchen plumbing and beautifully painted cabinets, not to mention some new electrical stuff, and some door hardware, and weird edwardian light bulbs and shower curtains and on and on. They have everything! And the whole process is about 1000% less annoying than making the run to Lowe's. Two thumbs up! read more

The best hardware store anywhere in the Western side of the city, possibly the city (havent visited them all). There are 5 hardware stores between my home and the Haight, and the parking in the Haight is unbelievable. And I go here for a few reasons: 1) they will always have the answer, explain it to you, and if they don't have the part they will order it for you 2) They are always friendly 3) what small premium they charge above the big box stores is worth it. Have you ever found someone helpful at the home depot? Much less gotten an evaluation of the options and an explanation of what to do and how to do it? Gimme a break - for anyone worried about paying 20% more - citing 'small business purchasing power - remember what that really means. Great service, real knowledge from the staff working there, competitive and fair wages for their employees, and a location no large store can even begin to touch. My mother told me this store has been a hardware store since she was a kid in the mid 1940's.(she grew up in the Haight.) Anyway it is tiny and has everything in it just not as many of them as a large hardware stores. a true neighborhood business. The employees are very helpful. read more

I like this small but packed hardware store. It stands out as the kind of store you might have found in the Haight before the hippies landed, but it also still fits in today.
