The Abrons Arts Center is part of the Henry Street Settlement, which has an amazing history. The settlement was started by Lillian Wald in 1895 to help care for the poorest residents of the Lower East Side. In 1915, the Lewisohn sisters opened the Neighborhood Playhouse. Many of its earliest productions were in Yiddish, because Lillian Wald believed both that the arts were essential to wellbeing and that immigrant cultures and languages should be celebrated. The theater has been putting on important, boundary-pushing productions for decades. It was renovated in the 1990s and is still beautiful today. The theater isn't large, which makes productions feel intimate. And they continue to support artists whose work might not find support at more traditional theaters. I'm so glad that Becoming Eve found a home at the Abrons Arts Center. It was supposed to be produced last year at a different theater, but the landlord objected to the production and rejected the show. But the play being put on here may have been a blessing. It felt special to see this play, based on the memoir of Abby Stein in this space. The play was fantastic. Well-acted and moving. I think it might have been the best play I saw over my weekend in the City (I saw three, the other two on Broadway). I have tickets to see another play at the Abrons in June, and I'm more excited than ever, because this first experience was so wonderful. The Abrons is a gem.

Not a bad spot to see an off-Broadway production…read more Multiple floors as it's a multi-purpose theater house. Overall place was clean and well air conditioned even though the theater we were in was kind of warm. Seating was spacious but the padding was kind of uncomfortable to me. After about two hours my butt and back were hurting. Just saw a musical called For The Last Time here as part of a Yelp night. Friendly and courteous staff. Each theater is small and intimate. Maybe only 7 rows in the one we were in. Good sound and sightlines no matter where you sit. Even better is that on the top floor there is a full lounge and bar area. Nice place to chill out at before a show and grab a cold drink or snack. Plus, they have large clean air conditioned bathrooms up there.

BRIC Arts Media House is a lowkey hidden gem in Brooklyn. A lot of people know it as an event space…read more(and it's great for that), but what most people don't realize is they offer classes in podcasting, photography, graphic design, sound design, and filmmaking--usually all under $100. I do a weekly podcast, and once you take their intro class, you can rent the studio for about $25/hour. Super easy process. Honestly, it's one of the most affordable options in NYC if you're trying to get into podcasting or any kind of creative media.

It's ideal for the type of films shown there, which are usually indies or foreign films (but anything can pop up). I come here now and again and this time around it was to see the Japanese comedy/horror 'Hot Springs Shark Attack', which was a lot of laughs. To get to the theater you need to walk through a portion of the hotel and head downstairs. It's next to the Django Jazz Club, which is also a great venue. It's a very nice environment, I think. Kind of elegant. If you see a film playing here that interests you, I would definitely encourage you to go. You'll like the vibe, I am sure.

My heels are breaking down as I make my way through my cobbled West Village streets to a not quite…read morehidden red door. It is propped open tonight as the fresh spring air blows up the set of stairs that dominate my gaze. As I climb my heart beats a little faster as the sounds of chitter-chatter get louder. A night at the theatre to awaken my senses is just what the doctor ordered, and nothing cures my ills better then the New York City Off-Broadway scene. It's dark and cold, but filled with smiling faces and warm hellos. It's like your neighborhood bar in all it's glory and tonight just like every night I don't know what that sip of drink will do to my sanity. I settle into my soft plush red seat, and my body sinks back in time. On the surface it might seem old, tattered, and frayed. But more importantly when you break the surface that is Rattlestick, nothing is different from what I'm watching tonight and what one might have seen here over 15 years ago. Rattlestick Playwrights Theater has always been committed to the development and production of innovative new plays while continuing to this day to foster some of the most important new voices in American Theatre. One of those spaces in New York that a true downtown theatre lover breathes in for what it is worth. From awkwardly using the bathroom on stage during intermission, to bits of paint falling from the ceiling it still lives in a time where you can say "This Is New York Theatre" and this just might be a place where "Dreams Do Come True." It's a place where 'Wright' can do no wrong, where 'Grimm' will make you laugh till you cry, and where 'Rapp' unwraps his wrath. It is the place to fall in love with theatre allover again! Highly ornate with many interesting architectural styles, it was originally designed by the architect of the legendary Ziegfeld Theatre with interiors by the designer of the Radio City Music Hall and the Waldorf Astoria. A designated New York City Landmark with over 3,000 seats, coming here for a movie or event is an incredible experience.

It was decorated nicely with paintings and rare editions of books contained in a small library used also as a conference room. I was there for a Meet and Greet" Cinco Del Mayo night to consider becoming a member. The members were friendly. However, there was no restaurant on the premises. They do cater some of their events up to about 42 people. I was told you can bring your own food in if you desire to. Also, they had a beautiful bar but no liquor license or bartender. The policy was bring your own bottle and use the glassware provided and be responsible for washing whatever used which I feel creates unsanitary conditions in this day and age of viruses going around. Also, there was no check room and attendant to secure your coat (in cool and inclement weather) or valuables. There wasn't any staff present only the members. If accepted as a member after filing an application and going through a formal interview your spouse wasn't able to use your benefits. He or she would be treated as an ordinary guest. The dues are reasonable and there is an initiation fee. There were only a few young members there and mostly single senior citizens filled the rooms. I did not see any couples present. 2 small phone booths were provided to use your phone so the other members would not be disturbed. There is a small area with a beautiful pool table there for members to shoot. There is no receptionist or security upon entrance. A member would have a fob or phone app to gain entrance into the building and take the elevator to the third floor. There are weekly events scheduled, free and paid. I went for the membership interview and was denied membership. Maybe it was because I spoke my mind and asked some concerning questions since I have been a member of 2 other social clubs that offered much more to their members and their partners.
