Adam Driver whining/bragging in Marriage Story that he was on the cover of Time Out New York is better on the big screen. (Click on my Substack for more Baumbach thoughts including my brief interaction with the auteur, as awkward as many of his finest scenes). You may have heard about the successful company that helped destroy movie theaters by pivoting to "content" meant to promote purchases of high-end TVs and nice couches. (Related, I went to Best Buy and didn't recognize anything. Is that a thermostat? A stereo? A smart garden hose?) This company was so successful, that after Knives Out was heralded as single-handedly reviving non-Marvel film, its sequel was withheld from the theaters it allegedly saved. (BTW, if you were planning to tell me to watch the amazing 53-part Quibi streaming series about The Golden Age Of Hollywood, don't bother). But after Netflix helped destroy theaters, it did a nice thing. It's one of those ironic moments like the purse-snatcher scene in Jay Kelly. It signed a lease that helped the Paris avoid the fate of the Ziegfeld and a million others, in a world where the AMC theaters that destroyed all the independents have been suffering themselves. So, while it was vile that Netflix thought Roma should be seen on TVs, it was nice of them to show it at the Paris, especially for the unusually vibrant sound. I saw Train Dreams Saturday. I suppose, like the kid in Squid and The Whale, I am a philistine. I wish I could praise its morose existentialism but I'm not quite on board. However, I did appreciate the majesty of the northwestern fires and falling trees in this venue. There was no assigned seating; not sure if this is just temporary, but if they keep that policy I might be obliged to overlook Netflix's evil and upgrade to 5 stars. read more

I want to start by saying in the front is wayyyyy to close I seen so many reviews that said the front seats are the best place. I had to move my seats to the right side back the view was still great and the sounds was good. I like that manager of Paris theater comes out before the movie to speak to the crowd and telling us to enjoy our experience. The snacks are so cheap I be like the popcorn is $7 and if you sign up to the newsletter you get a free box of popcorn remember to that. It's only one theater inside I was surprised I thought it was different rooms showing multiple movies. But I would recommend everyone to watch a movie here read more

I wish I lived in New York just to go here more often. Saw Orson Welles' Touch of Evil with the best introduction I've ever seen from Eddie Muller. He chronicled the history of Welles and the producer of this film and then unlikelihood of the movie even getting made, but that this film went from being a low effort pastiche mess and when Welles took it over there was a revitalized focus on the story and technical aspects of filmmaking. Wonderful staff and management, beautiful theater. The seats and popcorn were solid, but this gets a 5 star for amazing programming, fantastic atmosphere, and great people running the theater. read more

Opened on September 13, 1948, the theater that would become Paris Theater has changed owners and even had a different name (once known as the "Fine Arts Theatre"). From its beautiful marquee and logo to the classic red, cushioned seats and even a (non-functioning) water fountain built into one wall this theater is a gorgeous reminder of what once was when it comes to cinema in New York City. In 2019, Netflix signed a 10-year lease to operate this theater. Part of that takeover involved renovation and repositioning it as a venue for not only their own films but also premieres and classic films. Paris Theater regularly holds themed movie runs such as their recent "Cyberpunk" theme which ran movies such as "Blade Runner" and "The Matrix". I recently went to see the "KPop Demon Hunters Singalong" and I'm so happy I did! The seats in the theater are not the giant leather seats you'll see in some AMC theaters nowadays, but they're more like the fabric, cushioned seats of old. The theater has a main level and a balcony, another feature you do not often see nowadays. There are restrooms in the lower level along with the concession stand (where they sell their own branded chocolate bars!). I found the best seats are the front row of the center section on the balcony. You get a fantastic view of the entire screen without obstruction. The visual quality was fantastic and they even project the "Paris" logo dramatically on the curtains before they swing aside. It hadn't even occurred to me how long it has been since I have seen curtains move aside before a movie and it was a wonderful blast from the past. I was also very happy with the sound quality. For "KPop Demon Hunters" specifically the sound was important because of the music in that film and it sounded *great*! The staff was all very nice. They have an old fashioned box office outside and a person scanning electronic tickets inside. The concession stand staff was also super pleasant. After the Ziefeld closed in 2016, this theater became the last single screen theater in Manhattan. It stands as a lone reminder of what movie houses once were in New York City and it is definitely worth a visit! read more

We love the Paris Theatre! There is nothing like watching old movies from the 70s, 80s, and 90s on the big screen. This is a small theater so if your are looking for that big AMC experience, this isn't it. So far, we saw at least 5 movies at the Paris this year and it's always a fun experience. The staff is friendly, the theatre is reasonably clean - if you ignore the dead roach in the light in the ladies room - it's been there for years. We love the Q & A sessions after the movies. The chairs have a very reduced space in front of them and do not have the proper slope to allow visibility, I had to lean on my right side for 2 and a half hours to be able to partially watch the screen between the heads of the people seating in front of me. I would not be coming back and would not recommend, it's a shame because their movie selection is very good. read more

In the mood for something adventurous? Nontraditional? Feeling nostalgic...want to see something black-and-white? Better- this theater still has movie "festivals," aka marathons, complete with experts to introduce some of the films. Complete with NY-priced concessions! It is a switch-up from blockbuster movies in that the plots are always unexpected, scenes more avant garde, but don't look for those nice cushy seats or fancy soda dispensers. It is tucked in, closer to 58th than 59th, but you'll see the marquis. read more

It turns out the Paris Theater is the longest running arthouse cinema in NYC and is Manhattan's only single-screen cinema with 535 seats. You may notice an "N" logo and that's because as of Nov 2019, Netflix operates the theater. We had tickets for Psycho (1960) directed by Alfred Hitchcock. This is part of "HITCH! The Original Cinema Influencer" going on May-June 2025. It's the 4k restoration of the movie which was out of circulation in all formats until 2020. We also got a brief introduction of the movie and Hitchcock by Columbia University film professor and writer Annette Insdorf. The concessions are located downstairs and I will say are surprisingly affordable! The Popcorn & Fountain Drink were the perfect snack to accompany this horror/mystery movie. I will never forget that first ever experience at the Paris Theater watching a black-and-white silent film with an enthusiastic crowd. It represented a time of nostalgic past which still saw movies and cinema as the premium form of entertainment. It evoked a time when attention span was still high and dopamine hits from mobile devices was still kept at bay. As we approach a time where one of, if not the greatest movie studio is about to be swallowed by a streaming service, I remain grateful to still have The Paris Theater being a landmark destination for this brilliant art form and continues to showcase classic and modern films. I visited the Paris Theater for a double feature on Thursday night and had a great time. It claims to be the longest-running arthouse cinema in the City - opened by French distributor Pathé as a showcase for their films and opened on September 13, 1948. The theater is now owned by Netflix, so it hosts some Netflix-specific events and screenings in addition to screenings of classics, foreign films, and more. When I went on Thursday night, it was the night of their "A Century of Romance: Star-Crossed, On the Run, and Happily Ever After" series. I caught two classic romance movies - Design for Living from 1933 and The Miracle of Morgan's Creek from 1944. The theater is nice - very large - with an orchestra floor and a mezzanine. There's a small bar area downstairs where I grabbed a coffee between the screenings. Independent movie theaters aren't having a great time of it right now, and some around the country are closing. So it's great that Netflix has kept the Paris open, not just for screenings of their films and shows but also for cinema series and events! I'd happily return to the Paris for another screening! read more

I had the pleasure of seeing a special screening here. The staff provided great customer service. The bathrooms are clean and there is a concession stand that is affordable. The only down side is this theater does not accept cash at the concession stand downstairs or at the ticket booth. There is a machine downstairs that converts your cash into a card. You can use the card towards your purchase at the concession stand. read more

I came here to see the Netflix premiere of the Diplomat. I was told that Netflix purchased this theater and is now showing exclusive premieres. I recall a couple months ago the theater was packed for an Emily in Paris premiere. We were told to arrive early due to overbooking. We had to wait outside for a short time but eventually made it inside. They provided popcorn and water in the front. Afterwards you are escorted to your seat. There is a main row on the first level and additional seating in the balcony. The seats were very tight. You were bunched up next to the people around you. This was not enjoyable. The show was great even though it was only one episode which lasted about 40 minutes or so. I don't know if I would last for an entire movie in these tiny seats. Netflix should definitely spend some money to renovate this theater. Nice spacious seating would help a lot. I would love to come here for the next premiere but probably would not go out of my way. read more

Excellent projection, great choices of repertory 35mm films. I like the layout too--it's a very old school place, but it's clean and clearly well taken care of. They did a great job redoing it. If you're looking for reclining seats, you've come to the wrong place. This is what movie theater seats used to be like--and they were better this way. Not uncomfortable, but not too comfortable. My only complaint would be that the sound here is kind of reverb-y, so when a character is speaking on screen you get that kind of quick echo, almost doubled effect. They could do a better job deadening the sound in the auditorium in order to remedy this. The popcorn here is great, by the way. And the popcorn box is very attractive. read more

Amar, Cooper and I saw 2001: A Space Odyssey here on 70mm after getting not good thai food. The back rows at this theater don't have a slant so it's hard to see when people are in front of you so we moved. I enjoyed the loudness of the audio it made the experience better. A man started to unpack his bag in the middle of the movie and he was asked to leave. I saw it when I was peeing. I liked HALs voice. Last 20 minutes of the movie is fun. Amar didn't understand how the cameras got to space. 5/5. read more

Paris Theater is a historic landmark. James Dean hung out here when he came to NYC to become a superstar. This theater shows movies that you don't see everywhere. There was an issue with a screening in September and this theater could not have been nicer and more correct in assuming responsibility by offering multiple courtesy passes to make amends. Some would say they are covering themselves but in a city that is world renowned for hustlers and pencil pushers, one should take note of their class and desire to back intentions with actions. A brief history via their website: Paris is actually the oldest Arthouse cinema in NYC, the only remaining single-screen Cinema in Manhattan. Started as a French film hub, and built by a French man, giving it its elegant Opera Theater feeling. OK fine I'll admit: the first place I heard of this place was that SATC episode where Carrie dates the city and goes out to the one and only Paris Theater. That's what got me there originally, but something keeps me coming back over the years... Prior to the Pandemic, Paris Theater had closed down (I thought, for good). It was to my pleasant surprise that I searched Google to find it has reopened, under new management, and partnering with Netflix! (cinema gentrification, but I'll take what I can get.) It was so good to be back! Masks not required for vaccinated guests--which may rub some people the wrong way, but was like 7th heaven for me, personally. Just like old times, staff was super polite and hospitable-- like you're going to a Broadway show. The best part is, you're not paying dat Broadway price! I would highly recommend getting a coffee from the barista/concessions downstairs for the full experience (decaf available). Netflix actually is still keeping the theme of Arthouse cinema-- I chose to go to the screening of The Wages of Fear (1953). Go show them some support! read more

One of my favorite Movie theaters to go to alone or with another movie lover. Their movie selection is amazing, always has been (I've been coming here since I was 12 years old with my father, who shared my love for movies). We loved watching foreign movies that would not arrive in Latin America. besides the curation, the sound and screen is superior to what you'll see at AMC or other blockbuster movie theater places. Its a home away from home, a place where you can just rest your mind for a couple hours at anytime (I would come here pre covid for lunch). *Its a single screen movie theater. *the staff is helpful and knowledgable *seats are comfortable Their selection is incredible, I recently watched TAR, and despite not loving the movie, I love the experience. They have hours for everyone- from noon to 8pm on weekdays and weekends till 6pm. They are expanding the hours and days (When I went they were open 5X a week, now I see seven at the website. Its also extremely cheap- 16 dollars for adults, 14 for children, seniors and students. If you have a movie lover in your circle, take them here for a guaranteed lovely experience. read more

We had a ton of fun here. My wife and I attended the SAG AWARDS screening of Don't Look Up, at the Paris theater, two months ago. It's a really nice theater with a great staff. They were super helpful and friendly. The seats are comfortable and they actually have a concession stand (this has been quite rare at most of the SAG screenings we've attended). It's one of those theaters where no matter your seat, you can see basically everything. The stage was very visible when the Q&A took place after the film. We saw some rando unknown actors talk about the making of the film; Jonah Hill, Meryl Streep, and...uhh...Leonardo DiCaprio? WHO THE EFF IS THAT GUY? Anyway, I suggest you check out the Paris Theater. It's a cool spot! read more

Love this theater and the retrospective programming as of late. A warning though, avoid sitting in the balcony. At a recent screening, an employee (I assume the projectionist) kept opening a door and slamming it closed. It happened at least 10 times. They clearly didn't give AF. read more
