Cinema Village has been around for decades showing international and art films. Located on East 12th Street, it has many loyal customers. At $8 a ticket and $4 for a small popcorn, it is a steal. The acoustics and screen are fine. Restrooms are downstairs. Patrick, Jack and the unnamed young lady are helpful. Yesterday I saw "A Complete Unknown" which I enjoyed especially as I took half the popcorn home!

I have so much affection for NYC's few remaining indie movie houses, so I wish I could report that this was more than a 3-star destination. Paid them a visit for a Saturday night screening recently, and it was a haphazard experience. We were shuffled inside in a flurry of confusion about where we needed to be. The theaters were clean inside and seats fairly comfy- and it seems like weekend screenings are rather lightly attended here later at night, which is a plus. Visited the concessions stand and enjoyed the lack of line compared to the hoards you have to face at AMC or Regal just to get your hands on some popcorn. Prices were decent, popcorn wasn't particularly hot and seemed as if it had been sitting for a while, but tasty enough all the same. Biggest beef with the theater is the lack of attention to the projection quality itself. After a few mid-film glitches in our movie, it then cut out altogether with just a few minutes left. The audience stayed seated for a bit, assuming someone would swoop in to address the situation. After five minutes we ventured out to find the lobby deserted. It seemed we audience members had been left to our own devices to finish the screening, and had no choice but to leave without knowing how the kung fu flick we were watching resolved itself. Le sigh. I'll probably still be back in hopes that second time's the charm. I'm a sucker for old school spots with glorious neon marquees like the one Cinema Village has.

Small theater yet produce big results. I came here to see "Warlords" with a good friend/Asian language enthusiast along with his mother to celebrate her birthday. With only two theater rooms equipped with stadium style seating is quiant without all the hype of a mass multiplex hustle and bustle vibe. For one adult tickets are $11.00 as Cinema Village plays low budget films, and foreign films as "Warlords" (fantastic movie with powerful quotes). Jet Li is my man, skilled and trained in Wushu! I rate Cinema Village four stars, despite of the size, not easily handicap assessible for those who have difficulties walking to climb one flight of stairs as the ramp is for wheelchairs only. Box Office is located outdoors, theater staff is pleasant. Facilities equipment is boisterously loud as we arrived early sitting on the lower level and can hear the mechanics of the facilities equipment in usage.

When he checked our tickets, he surprised us with an upgrade that truly enhanced our evening. After the movie, we expressed our gratitude and were deeply impressed by his professional and humble demeanor. Travis also took the time to tell us about special events at the Speakeasy and even allowed us to take some photos. His exceptional service made our visit memorable, and we will certainly make IPIC our primary theater moving forward.

The staff came across as nonchalant and not very engaged, which set the tone right away. The food didn't help either--the spicy tuna was completely flavorless, not crispy and the drinks were underwhelming. We also weren't told ahead of time that you have to pick up your food and drinks yourself, which was surprising since we're used to full service at your seat. On the positive side, the popcorn and truffle fries were decent, but everything else fell short. The seats were just okay--not particularly comfortable. The bathroom situation was also frustrating--it's located upstairs near the restaurant and wasn't well maintained. There were no paper towels, and overall cleanliness was lacking. Overall, this felt like a subpar experience, and I won't be returning. My cousin mentioned the New Jersey location is much better, so maybe it's just this one--but based on this visit, I wouldn't recommend it.

(Click on my Substack for more Baumbach thoughts including my brief interaction with the auteur, as awkward as many of his finest scenes). You may have heard about the successful company that helped destroy movie theaters by pivoting to "content" meant to promote purchases of high-end TVs and nice couches. (Related, I went to Best Buy and didn't recognize anything. Is that a thermostat? A stereo? A smart garden hose?) This company was so successful, that after Knives Out was heralded as single-handedly reviving non-Marvel film, its sequel was withheld from the theaters it allegedly saved. (BTW, if you were planning to tell me to watch the amazing 53-part Quibi streaming series about The Golden Age Of Hollywood, don't bother). But after Netflix helped destroy theaters, it did a nice thing. It's one of those ironic moments like the purse-snatcher scene in Jay Kelly. It signed a lease that helped the Paris avoid the fate of the Ziegfeld and a million others, in a world where the AMC theaters that destroyed all the independents have been suffering themselves. So, while it was vile that Netflix thought Roma should be seen on TVs, it was nice of them to show it at the Paris, especially for the unusually vibrant sound. I saw Train Dreams Saturday. I suppose, like the kid in Squid and The Whale, I am a philistine. I wish I could praise its morose existentialism but I'm not quite on board. However, I did appreciate the majesty of the northwestern fires and falling trees in this venue. There was no assigned seating; not sure if this is just temporary, but if they keep that policy I might be obliged to overlook Netflix's evil and upgrade to 5 stars.

There's a few issues here and a few fantastic things and I think the easiest way is to list them by category. The Bad: -Like others, I agree that the seats unfortunately are not that comfortable here. This is by far the biggest issue here and it should have been addressed years ago and I doubt it will be soon -They still show the same extremely annoying metal band shirt advertisement with flashing lights that is annoying every single time I go here -The staff here aren't the nicest but it's a movie theater so I can deal with it The Good: -If you're looking for independent films and foreign films, this is one of if not the best theater to go to -The occasional Q&A I'm able to go to such as most recently for Eephus; which was an excellent existential baseball movie; and the Ukrainian documentary Porcelain War last year are always entertaining and interesting and they don't cost more so I would recommend them -If you're looking to see some form films to fill out your Letterboxd Oscar list or perhaps the shorts or something, they show virtually all of them here -They have some fun midnight screenings and other things such as the obligatory The Room and Rocky Horror Picture Show of course There's a few other theaters that I like going to more but there's occasionally films that you really can't find anywhere else. Combine that with the fact that this place is so convenient that I deal with any of the issues here. If they fix the seats, you can preemptively switch this to five stars but for now, it's a four.
