I've eaten at Rocco's many times it's not that convenient for me but I make it a point to go when I can, the food, service and atmosphere is good. That said, I don't think I'll go back after what I experienced last Friday night (11/21/14). My friend and I arrived 7:30p on our way to Charleston, WV from Lexington. My brother drove over from Charleston to meet us, we got there a little earlier than him. I say this to make a point, we really like the restaurant. The hostess greeted us, friendly and efficient, took our name and how many in the party and wrote it down on the list. She asked if everyone in the party was there and we said no we are waiting on a 3rd, she said let me know when they get here and we will have a table. My friend and I sat at the bar and waited for the bartender to stop looking for a channel on the TV and he took our drink order. My friend had another cocktail while we waited on my brother. He arrived about 45 minutes after us and wrapped up at the bar and the hostess came over and said, we have a table this is boxing up and we will seat you soon. Odd, given that she had all of our info and we had already been there for 45 min. 5 minutes later a male server arrived on scene and said we can seat you in the bar area, I said that was okay, the hostess said we have a table and we are going to wait. This was not what he wanted to hear, I could see it on his face. He went over to talk to the hostess and she came back to us to say we can dine in the bar area I said no thank you we will eat in the dinning room. As we were chatting with her a couple came in and was seated immediately in another part of the restaurant. The hostess left and she reappeared at the bar so I went over to chat with her. As I was telling her that I was dissatisfied and confused she started quoting restaurant policy to me. "we only seat you when everyone in your party is present." I'm not sure what this had to do with my issue. Why were they gently insisting that we dine in the bar area? She said there was another dinning room but they were shutting it down for the night, to which I said, a party was just sat over there. The female server who ushered this couple over to that part of the dinning room in question, intervened and told me to take a seat in the other dinning room to which I was grateful. When I said that to her and thanked her, she started in on the defense of the hostess and restaurant policy. I was disheartened and it ruined my meal. You know there are worse things in the world than bad service and restaurant policies that have nothing to do with customer service so I chalk it up to a bad experience. I also don't have to spend my dollars here, and I'll move on. My advice to the owner and manager is this - make sure everyone is trained properly in how to handle customers who are confused. Reevaluate policies that have nothing to do with customer service. My guess is life is tough in the fine dinning business in Ceredo, WV from the run down looks of outside of the restaurant and the empty bar when we walked in during prime time on a Friday night. I also see the overwhelmingly positive reviews listed on this website. Perhaps I'm the only one who has had a bad experience here. I strongly suspect that regulars at this establishment get preferential treatment, just an observation over the years. I'm not a regular, but I still have money to spend as do other travelers. I will say this, the server was professional after our chat and her service was good. The food was tasty and the portion exceptional. I feel strongly about supporting locally owned businesses and will sometimes spend a little extra to do so and put up with their non-corporate and idiosyncratic nature but I'm more likely to just keep on driving next time I make the trip down I-64. read more
