Shelley is an exceptional speech therapist. Our 3.5 year old son has been working with her for about a year. He LOVES sessions with Shelley -- she is incredibly creative and fun. Our son is able to focus on speech exercises for an hour because Shelley uses a huge variety of games to keep him engaged. Shelley is also very systematic. The first time we met Shelley, she performed a full assessment on our son to determined which sounds he was mispronouncing. When Shelley taught our son to say the "l" sound, she focused on the "l" at the beginning, end, and middle of the word. Now, he can say "l" naturally. I was having a hard time understanding my teenage son on occasion and I noticed that he might be mispronouncing some words, but I couldn't exactly put my finger on what it was. Shellyis the BEST!!!! . My son has severe speech apraxia and did not say a single word for many many years. He started to make some progress before Covid but then we stopped seeing her during Covid because with the barriers he had a hard time. When our son missed his first few speech milestones, we got worried. Conventional internet wisdom was unhelpful since it ranged from "Don't worry, he'll talk when he's ready!" to "He probably has apraxia of speech, or maybe autism." We decided to be patient, waiting and watching, trying to interest him in exploring new words, but he seemed unconcerned with moving beyond the five or six words he was already comfortable with. By his second birthday, we were deeply concerned. His receptive language (understanding) was clearly there, but he still refused to speak. We have a wonderful pediatrician, and when we shared our misgivings with her she gave us the name of a local speech therapist who was "known for breakthroughs." At this point, that's what we wanted more than anything: a breakthrough. Our son's lack of language seemed to be creating other delays since, understandably, it hampered his ability to ask questions or to articulate his needs. The "breakthrough" speech therapist our pediatrician referred us to was Shelley Greenbaum. Due to the pandemic, we began regular sessions with her via Zoom. Some of our meeting time was dedicated to Shelley observing and interacting with our son (and us), but I think the most pivotal aspect of these early sessions was the training she provided my wife and me. It felt like an apprenticeship. She taught us strategies that we could use to stimulate our son to communicate verbally: creative games and activities that were based not only on his level of development but also on his personality and interests. She helped us figure out the best ways to incentivize and facilitate speech. The breakthrough happened much more quickly than we could have imagined. Within the space of a few months, our son went from fewer than ten words to dozens, then hundreds. Now, about six months into our sessions with Shelley, he is constructing full sentences (7+ words at last count) all by himself. After all our doubt and anxiety about his lack of speech, we now have lively two-way conversations with him at the dinner table. Our efforts have shifted from broadening his vocabulary (we've long since lost count of his words) to working on his articulation and helping him master more complex elements of speech, like pronouns. When our daughter was approaching school age, we knew it was time to really address her speech. As she entered Kindergarten, it was impacting her writing and reading and it was difficult for new people to understand her. Even for us at home, it was hard for us to sometimes understand her and this caused some frustration from her. We reached out to Shelley right before the Pandemic hit and even had our first meeting setup but then we went on lockdown. Two months later, I asked Shelley if she was doing Zoom lessons and she said yes. We were both unsure how it would go but were willing to give it a go. I think we can both agree that we are glad we did. She started in May and we just ended our lessons. We had met every week and l was there to assist with any part of the lesson as necessary. Due to the lessons, our daughter went from average on her reading and writing to top percentile. We believe her growth was driven strongly by her speech ability. My daughter has been seeing Shelley since she was 4 to help with her speech issues (mostly articulation problems). Shelley has been a tremendous help. She is gentle and playful yet firm and can keep my rambunctious, stubborn daughter on track during the sessions. She has been able to effectively teach my daughter how to make her "sounds" properly, to listen to and distinguish between different sounds, and helped develop proper tongue placement inside her mouth. She also gives us a lot of speech exercises to do at home which is super helpful. Dr. Shelley Greenbaum is an amazing speech therapist. Our daughter has a rare genetic condition that resulted in a speech delay. Not only is it hard for our daughter to move her tongue due to problems with coordination and weakness, but also, she struggles to learn and concentrate. We were so pleased with the great fluency and clear speech that our children developed while working with her and are happy to report they all speak perfectly now. They are much older now, but they worked with her when they were still in pre school and elementary school ages. They had different issues that ranged from delayed speech, articulation, fluency, learning to have proper tongue placement inside their mouths and one of our children had stuttering. Shelley even helped our middle son with tactile issues and sensitivity to his skin with things like tags, fabric and clothing labels. As I mentioned, she helped our oldest with stuttering, which needs to be dealt with before the age of nine to have full and lasting benefits.
