We've got frost delays and frozen greens but still manage to pay 71 dollars in the late December time. While most courses drop their prices by 20-30 dollars for off season, Rock Harbor has dropped their prices by four dollars. Two stars because I had a ball kick off of the frozen pond and land on the green. Get it together Rock. read more

Sons birthday gift ruined. Due to the extremely poor management and golf etiquette of groundskeepers and some patrons. First the older gentleman that works in the pro shop is an absolute jerk. He harassed my son and his friend about driving the cart after he gave them the keys and the Marshall approved it. Basically saying my son and his friend that are 13 were being rude and loud which they weren't at all. But they was a group of men there that was drunk and loud and falling off the cart at 8:30am and nothing was said to them. I will never go back to Rock Harbor and I will tell all my friends to never go there until something changes or he is gone. read more

What a disappointment !! Beautiful course however letting tee times be so stacked every 7 minutes was rediculous!! Plus pay 80 bucks to have people allowed to come up on ya to be allowed to have loud music blasting out loud. WTH. You have to have. Wear proper golf attire but no need to practice proper golf etiquette!! WTH. I will not be back. I have too many choices to spend 80-90 or 100 bucks to get a nice quiet golf outing. Professionally!!! Will Detleff Schmidt We recently visited on Memorial Day Sunday with 4 players; [under Sutherland 10;30/10;45 ] w/two tee times yet we continually had players crowd us, directly behind us; seemed to be over crowded and some had left cigarettes and cigars lying around; I think the Greenskeeper was AWOL- they no military discount; on memorial weekend? The greens were in horrible shape; I've seen better 9-hole forces it simply overpriced fees- what a horrible little red neck course? The gas run carts have you sucking gas fumes- horrible...more under my article - worst was after 4 hours of play, the restaurant/snack bar seemed backlogged also we left. Rock Harbor Golf Course - Bill for my worst day of golf! - Golf Near Me - Winchester, Virginia

Went here for a friends bachelor trip. One of us called ahead and told them there would be 6 of us playing and they said it would be no issue. We got stopped by the starter and he told us we had to go as 3 and 3 or 4 and 2 even though the person over the phone didn't say anything about it. He also told us we couldn't take in personal coolers, so we had to shove all of our drinks into our bags or the cart. We got stopped later on hole 4 or 5 by a "cart ranger" that told us we needed to spilt up. We obviously wanted to play together since it was my friends bachelor party. We then got stopped on hole 11 and were asked to leave the course. We went back to the pro shop and asked for a refund since we only played 10 holes but they did not give us one. Course was mediocre at best for $80 and communication over the phone and in person was horrible. Will most definitely not be back. read more

I'm semi-torn on this golf course. On the one hand, its extremely well kept, rules are enforced by course martials throughout the round, and the layout is very unique. On the other hand, it has a bit of a snooty feel to it, it's pretty expensive, and although I've seen walking rates on the website, you would have to be A) insane, or B) in amazing shape to walk this course, especially for 18 holes. The Pros: This course was seriously in amazing shape. The grounds crew deserves a medal for what they've been able to maintain. It's a TON of land, and it all looks great. That combined with the rocks placed everywhere, really makes you stop and take a look around at the course at multiple locations when playing. The architecture of the holes is very unique! I've never played a track quite like this, and while it did get me into trouble on some tee shots where it wasn't super clear where to aim, there were a lot of clear areas left and right of the fairway to hit your second shot. Just overall a FUN course. The Cons: Did I mention it had a unique layout? That does not come without a price. The two separate courses weave in and out of each other on both the front and the back, making it hard to navigate to the correct tee box on some holes. Yes, there are signs, but sometimes in weird places. You'll probably end up doubling back to a few locations throughout your round. That's the only golf-related con from me. As for the snooty comment I made earlier. This was mostly in regards to the starter when we teed off. He walked us through the rules of the course. That's fine. But please don't talk to us like we are 5 year olds that have never played a round of golf before. He was very on his high horse about all explanations. We get it, dude. All in all, I would 100% come back to play this course when in the area. It provides a change-of-pace challenge you don't get with a lot of courses, and there are some extremely fun shots to hit (I.e., the par 3 from the top of the quarry). It is a LITTLE pricey, but if you don't care, I'd say give it a shot (ha!). You'll enjoy your round! read more

Really, really bad first experience. Absolutely careless service. My group was charged full price after coming out and having our round cut extremely short. We made it through five holes before the starter came out to escort us off the course so they could close up the facility by 7:30pm - over an hour before sunset. This would not have been an issue if we had been told when we booked our tee time, but unfortunately, we weren't. Our group left extremely disappointed and frustrated. A big disappointment. It was incredibly difficult to navigate how to get to the next hole. Intertwining two courses a very novel but bad idea. No yardage markers on each hole. Confusing yellow/red/white/blue arrows on cart path to attempt to direct you to the next hole, but didn't serve its purpose. Met others who jumped in front of us, lost on the course,as we were. Blind holes common, even some same greens served two holes. What were they thinking?? Most confusing ill planned course we've ever experienced, very hokey. Don't waste your money or time. After 9 holes, didn't go past clubhous and didn't get back to it until finished, outhouse on course, & it did have water. spent too much mental energy find next hole or what direction to hit your ball, exhausting. Our opinion & we've played at many many courses. Our advice, choose another course. read more

Big negative- with 19 going on, the lack of mask and social distancing was appalling Signs on the door that mask required- wasn't enforced!!!! Then charged extra for 1 in a cart!!! This golf course could have been one of the best golf courses in Virginia. The owners had everything, land, lots of water and all the equipment to construct a premier course. The only thing lacking was a qualified architect. It is well kept but the construction of the greens is terrible, ridiculous undulation for a public course and you need a map to find your way around the course. This is one place the management just don't get it! read more

This was a really fun course. First week of November and it was still in great shape. The layout was very interesting and challenging.

A very disappointing day. First, the course was in horrible shape for the time of year. The greens were healing from aeration so I get that 100% but, when you can't differentiate the fairway from the rough as you're teeing off, there's an issue.....the fairways were a "divot farm" and overgrown. The rough had dead grass clippings all over them and if that wasn't bad enough, the over abundance of clover blossoms were. I've played this course before (2 years ago) and it was in immaculate condition. For the cost of a non member round versus what we received were definitely on the opposite ends of expectations. Second (and my biggest complaint) is the inconsiderate grounds crew. NEVER EVER in the 25+ years of playing golf have I encountered a grounds keeper that didn't stop mowing while you were playing through. 2 separate occasions and 2 different grounds keepers on 2 different holes had no respect/etiquette. They kept mowing, in our play, and were 100% distraction and a safety hazard to us. And then, on one of the same holes as we were chipping on to the green, a 3rd groundskeeper pulled up to the green in their utility cart and started up their leaf blower and proceeded to blow off the cart path from debris. CMON Man!!! This course is very unique in how it's laid out, challenging yet fair to all skill levels, breathtaking views but I'm sorry, I will not return to this course nor will I recommend it to anyone . 100% disappointing. read more

I am currently a member at Rock Harbor Golf Course. In 2016 I was diagnosed with a Torn Rotator cuff which took me out for a year of doing anything. I presented to management a Doctors letter stating I would be out for a year. Management stated they were not able to let me out of my contract but, would work with me and also delay payments until Nov of 2017. April 2017 I had to move to another's state to help take care of my wife's elderly parents. I did inform a representative of my situation and provided my new address. Earlier this month I received a call from management asking when I was going to pay the balance. I began to explain the agreement that was made previously. This person had no clue about the agreement and proceeded to state there was no recourse they could take if I decided not to pay. I was furious with the accusations of me not paying what I owe. I wanted to discuss the possibility of just paying green fees since I am no longer in the area and management stated "No, you signed a contract" which is true. After further discussion with another representative that stated there was an email routed stating the agreement and some of the managers were not cc: After all of this unprofessional disposition, it seems to me there is a lack of respect and false accusations. Go somewhere else and spend your money to play golf. read more

I went to Rock Harbor on a Monday to hit a $9 bucket of range balls to practice for an upcoming golf match. I get 2 employees that ruined my practice time. First, I get Robert trying to carry a conversation with the guy 2 stalls down from me (the only other person on the range). I would have been fine with a few minutes but 10 minutes is way too much. Take it inside the clubhouse Robert!! Then I get "Lem" (what it said on the name tag) come out to use the range stall next to me. He is smoking a terrible smelling cigar that gave me an instant headache and then proceeds to "Whistle" loudly to get someone's attention 30 yards away and shouts "You gonna pick me up tomorrow?" while I'm over my ball getting ready to hit. I know this is not a country club but have we lowered our public golf etiquette so far to ruin my practice round? The employees at Rock Harbor have and this is why I won't be back. read more

Played on a windy, wet afternoon. We had 5 people and informed the man behind the desk. He said nothing about not being able to go off together. There were no golfers behind us, yet we were told by the starter that we could not go as a fivesome. We played a couple of holes as 2 groups only to be held up by a threesome in front of us. We decided to join up since we were being held up anyway. Again, no one was waiting on us. After a few holes the marshal came by and told us again that we could not play with 5 people. We pointed out the obvious, that we were being slowed by a threesome in front and there was no one else behind us. The wind was blowing about 25-30 mph, it was cold and cloudy with rain on the way. We were still told that we could not play with 5. We later caught up with our friends on the tee box (16, 17?) on a short par 4 because they were still being held up by a group in front of us. As we were standing there talking and waiting to tee off the marshal came by once more and got very ugly with us. At no time did he go tell the golfers in front to speed up. He just assumed that since we were together we must still be playing as 5. We did not pay $54 a person to be harassed all afternoon on a wet, cold windy day. Apparently we don't look the part of the high class golfers they bring in. I have been playing golf for 40 years and have never been treated so poorly by the staff. It's a shame, because the course in beautiful. They will never get another dollar out of my friends and me, though. Oh, and did I mention the pin placement on 2 of the holes where the ball would not hold the slope? I putted uphill only to see the ball come rolling back down. Stunning Course, But Under Construction. My wife and I tried out Rock Harbor Golf Course this week, and found it to be memorable. A second 18 is in the process of being added, though it wasn't clear to me which it was, as we were sent out to play "The Boulder's" front nine and "The Rock's" back nine. All of the course seemed to me to be under construction still, to varying degrees. There's a lot of driving between holes, and though it is beautiful out there and the riding is fun, it is awfully confusing despite there being a lot of temporary signage and a staff of (wonderful) marshalls out there directing traffic. More than once we ended up nose to nose with other carts on a cart path, we were able to reason out which of two pins to shoot at on a large double green (Boulder #4), and on #18 a marshall arrived just in time to tell us "no, not that tee box". We experienced some good natured "do you have the treasure map" from other lost groups, but also wore the patience of some folks behind us who clearly knew where they were going. Surprisingly and very unfortunately, we suffered from lack of any sort of "treasure map". A range card; a score card with hole layouts; even a hole diagram on each tee box would have been helpful, particularly as there are a lot of elevation changes leading to blind shots. I'm sure these things are coming. Range markers on the fairways are scarce, and for some reason our normally reliable Skycaddie GPS seemed as confused as we were. www.rockharborgolf.com has a really super virtual tour of each hole, and as we did have an I-pad with us we tried to make some use of it, but we had folks behind us and it just wasn't practical to spend much time looking at it. The course itself is spectacular - I mean it is really going to be something! Each hole presents unique challenges, though again you lose a lot of it if isn't clear to you what the challenges are until you are in them. One of a kind highlights for me were the artificial turf tee boxes off lake platforms on Rock #12, and the super-elevated tee on Rock #17. I was looking forward to the island par three, but that was not on our dance card. The "unfinished" aspects of the course are esthetics; the ground itself is quite ready and in excellent shape all around. The rough is thick. The greens are enormous, heavily contoured, and wicked fast. I came in seven over my handicap, and felt real lucky to do so. In my opinion it is a very difficult course to score on. I certainly look forward to playing this course again. I only hope it is not priced out of my reach when it is "finished". read more

I play this course almost once a week and I have come to find that there are many pros and cons to playing this course. First off the the fees are very reasonable even on weekends which is a positive. The range is pretty average, they have artificial turf mats that are in very good condition and range balls are also in good shape. There are two ranges, one for full shots and another that is made for target shots ranging from 50 to 85 yards. The putting green is very big in relation to other courses in the area and there are also two practice bunkers that are a part of the green. There are two courses, (one if them currently being finished) The Rock and The Boulder. The Rock is the finished course of the two and is the one I prefer to play. The greens on are in very good shape and rolling better than some nicer courses I've played. Although they are rolling well, some of the hills you will encounter will make you almost cry! I usually don't 3 putt, but playing The Boulder I found myself putting 3 or more times on some holes. The pin locations on The Boulder should be illegal. I like a challenging course but The Boulder is plain stupid. Don't waste you're time if you have the choice to play Boulder. Overall a fun layout and a challenge for any golfer. Would highly recommend, just bring someone else to feel the pain with you. read more

I had the opportunity to play the Rock Harbor "Rock" golf course this past Saturday. The course itself is in exceptional shape. Well cut tee boxes, lush fairways, and a very forgiving rough throughout most of the track. The layout offers a lot of variety and it would be a mistake, after playing the first few holes, to think you're playing one of the most straightforward and easy courses in Northern Virigina. As soon as you hit the 4th hole, you open up into an alley of holes highlighted by a lot water, culminating in Rock Harbor's version of TPC Sawgrass' famous 17th hole. True to it's Shenandoah locale, there are a number of hills and elevation changes from hole to hole. The variety doesn't end there. Rock Harbor also sports a few long par 5s (571 yards), very long par 4s (431, 441 yards), a drivable par 4 on the back 9 (275 yards) and a few holes littered with large gravel granual bunkers which are extremely tough to hit out of. The only downside to the course is (i) the driving range - very short with mattted hitting areas and (ii) the long drive to get to the place (1 hour, 20 minutes) from DC-proper. The price and condition of the course more than makes up for the second downside. Summer rates between noon and 2 are pegged at $36. Highly recommended. A final note: Rock Harbor is in the process of completing the second 9 of its companion track known as the Boulder course. The first nine of the Boulder course are interspersed with the Rock's layout and can be seen as you play the Rock. When completed, it will attract alot more golfers from the DC area I'm sure.
