TL;DR: Okay course; starter was less than helpful; not particularly scenic or anything; Expensive. Overview: ~Checking in was no problem; tee time was booked online ($95/person: a little expensive for what it is imo) ~Range balls are separate ~Carts are around, but need to check with starter for which one to load our stuff into ~Starter interaction was less than ideal. I came out after checking in, and went to load a cart. Starter was not at the podium (which had a tip jar?), but was on his phone and sitting next to the podium facing away from the carts. When I asked if I can load any cart, I hear him say "No", which is fine, but took a minute to finish his game and then get up to give me a key. He pointed at the cart I should use, and I went and loaded it myself (what's the tip jar for, if not going to be helpful). ~Cart had a cooler on it, but no ice in it ~We had about 20ish minutes before our tee time, so we were trying to rush to warm up, but the starter said "You guys have plenty of time" ~We started warming up and ~12 minutes in, the starter begins yelling our name to tell us to start our round ~Starter did not tell us pin position or anything, but found the info on a board ~The score cards do not have a good view of the greens/pin positions, so just winged it COURSE: ~Tee boxes were nice and flat ~There weren't many scenic or particularly nice holes, but overall it was well maintained ~Bathroom available after hole 4 and 8 (same bathroom/portapoddy) ~You loop back to the clubhouse at the run and the 15th tee is next to the clubhouse) Overall, it's an okay course, but for the price point, I'm not surprised that the course was not that busy on a Sunday during peak season. read more

Course is decent, some holes are a bit too close for comfort, so hopefully no one slices while you're on the tee box on opposite side of the cart path. Cart girl didn't come around nearly enough and when she did, she didn't have any water. Also there are NO water coolers on the WHOLE course. ZERO water. On a 90° day, they're asking for trouble. But it gets better / there was a wedding so the clubhouse was CLOSED. Unacceptable. They said no water since Covid. It's 2024, get it together. No ambulance for Covid, just an ambulance for heat exhaustion....come on, do better. read more

I've been driving a reasonable distance to play this place for years. It was coming back to form prior to the past year or so. 4th visit in as many months and met in the afternoon with a snails pace. An event.. some leagues.. high school matches. Everytime we come there's now some LOCAL EVENT making the pace and the round MISERABLE. Too many courses in the area to have to deal with this. The guy in the pro shot clearly didn't even want to have a conversation and was busy on his phone in the office the entire time we were there and tried to talk. Out of multiple items in the grill room when we bailed on the round and just wanted to eat. Honestly give up on this place read more

I love this course for the following reasons: (1) they support our dog rescue efforts (2) it sits on a gorgeous piece of land, with mountains overlooking the entire course. (3) their carts are awesome, equipped with coolers! Staff is great, there's always someone to answer questions or help out when needed. The food at the concession stand is also very tasty and a good value for the money. The course is pristine. There's a nice driving range area as well as a small putting green. There are water falls and small lakes scattered throughout the property. It's about an hour drive from Fairfax but worth the trek! read more

This course is located out past Front Royal. My golf buddy and I took a day off to play 18 holes. Since we golf for a yearly tournament, the course provides us with a free round of golf any other time during the year. We took advantage of it this week. The weather was hot and humid, but they offer carts for $25. There were just a few groups before and after us, but everyone was pretty courteous and let each other play through as needed. The course is hilly but very nice. The grounds are clean, there is a very big clubhouse that offers an assortment of deli and grill foods. There's also a nice selection of draft as well as bottles/cans for your 'cooler' pleasure. Parking is easy and there are nearby accommodations should you decide to stay over for another 18 holes. read more

Played golf here over the beautiful memorial day weekend. Nice place, aesthetically pleasing, airy club house. The course was in decent shape, not tip-top, greens were a little bald and speedy and the back 9 bunkers were really junky (mostly unweeded) but overall a great experience. Service was pleasant--from the starter to the bar cart woman to the waiter, everyone was really nice. Oh and the sandwiches were tasty! We used a coupon deal (Goldstar I believe) so that made it more affordable and worth the trek all the way out to Front Royal. read more

As a special event venue, I would recommend Blue Ridge Shadows very highly and enthusiastically. We recently hosted the rehearsal dinner for my son's wedding. About 30 guests. The chef prepared a fine meal, the facilities were decorated expertly and set up correctly, and the staff was flexible and accommodating. We even played a family video on the installed flat screen monitor as part of the evening's entertainment. I would not hesitate to send friends there for similar events. read more

Did a five round Stay and Play this past weekend. I've never seen this course in better shape. WAY, WAY worth every dollar.

I've played this course once each of the past two years. If it weren't quite so far from Arlington, I would most definitely play it more often. It's a nice course with some super-fun holes, and because it's so far out there, it's not typically crowded, so you can play some fast rounds. Of course, all that time you save playing is lost on the time spent driving out there. Not the course's fault, just something to consider. Another big advantage is the rates. ~$45 for playing Sundays at 1pm? Sweet. The club house is nice, and the bar staff are truly friendly. Great service, and they've got some quality beers to pack up and take with you out on the course using the cart's mini-cooler. Side note: How the hell is it possible that there are still courses without coolers on carts??! Mind-numbing. Course conditions are generally pretty good. The front nine has always been in good shape, and most of the back nine holes are as well. However, they seem to have trouble with some greens on the back. Both times I have played, however, couple greens on the back were in bad shape. This is particularly true for the 16th hole. Please fix these problems, because they're really detracting from what is otherwise a great course! Lastly, the proshop and maintenance staff are fantastic. We finished our last round in near-darkness, and we were the last people on the ground when we walked off the course at the 7th hole and arrived back at the clubhouse. There was a single gentleman there, waiting to greet us. But rather than getting upset that we were coming in with the darkness, he just smiled and said, "Thanks for bringing the carts back to me!" and not in a sarcastic way. Before heading out, I ran in to hit the head, and on my way out, he was still there, clearing our carts out. I gave him $10 and apologized for coming in so late. He just said, "You don't have to do that, I'm just glad you guys had a good time out there!" And that is precisely why I will be coming back again. read more

Played today - course is in great shape - Greens were very nice and true - not as fast as my home course but really good - Bunkers were in good shape - only saw 2 that were still in need of renovations. Course is challenging but enjoyable. Staff was really helpful and food was rood. read more

Decent golf course in the valley. Greens are usually well kept. Sometimes the course feels too wet, could just be me. Challenging hole designs, add to the fun. Really need a GPS for distance, not well marked. Ok clubhouse. Worth a play or two. Try it out. read more

Much improved landscaping from a few years ago. White bunkers and lush fairways. Black tee boxes looked a little rough but not much play from 7300 yards I guess haha. Course was pretty crowded today with slow play but that could happen anywhere. Nice cart girl and bartender with fair prices on brews. Blue Ridge Shadow isn't worth a drive from anywhere outside of 15 minutes. The course is just okay. Condiions were a 2 out of 5. All of the bunkers are unpayable to the point where the local rule is a free drop. I mean, there's 4 foot high grass growing in the bunkers. Yo, BRS...cut it, rake it, anything! Lots of blind shots and fairways that run out. We played the whites and could have moved back a tee, but I can't stand courses that penalize you for hitting a nice long drive. Really just disappointing overall. Food was good, beer was cold, clubhouse was fine. The course is in total disrepair. Really disappointed. read more

Played today on a perfect spring day. The course is very protective of its players vis a vis the pandemic. Single carts and carts scrubbed after each round are the order of the day. The course was in excellent spring condition. The veteran management team lead by Brian is top notch. Since they could not serve inside, the tenth hole had a grill for patrons looking for a terrific burger or hot dog with a drink. The course has dramatic elevation changes, some of which are on the greens making putting very challenging. I really like this place! read more

As an avid golfer in the Shenandoah valley, I was excited to play my first round here this summer. After reading the accolades online and talking to other golfers about the course, I couldn't wait to get there to play. Beautiful clubhouse, friendly and courteous staff, and $25 for a twilight round...what's not to love right? Then I saw the course. I could not have been more disappointed! Don't get me wrong, the layout is amazing and they have tee boxes to fit just about any skill level but it looked as though the maintenance crew had been laid off. Fairways were decent at best, bunkers with more grass than sand, and the greens were aerated but never groomed with sand so they hadn't healed! Greens in this area heal in a month if done properly, 3 months in and these greens were only halfway there. THE OWNERS OF THIS GOLF COURSE SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF THEMSELVES! read more

Played here last weekend. Greens had been aerated a few weeks earlier. Horrible condition. The bunkers had crab grass and little to no sand. On top of that, the front nine took 2 hours and 45 minutes. Too many people who can't play golf were TRYING to play golf here that day. Rough is a true penalty, which is fine, but greens need to give you a chance to make up those strokes. I will only try this place one more time due to the rain check I got because I complained about the laughable pace of play. read more

I am a low-handicapper and played from the tips. It's 7,200 yards from back there. I thought it was great layout with many challenging shots. There is a 250 yd par 3, a 489 yd whopper of a Par 4, and a lot of other longer holes, so I was hitting a fair number of hybrids and long irons. Conditions were good, except the greens were very slow, perhaps because of recent heavy rains. The scenery is good, but unfortunately there is a major road pretty much visible from everywhere, so you don't get the Blue Ridge shadow feel that the name suggests. That said, I will be back for another go at this course. read more

I am from Pennsylvania and was in the area visiting. I decided this course would be fun to play with my dad and uncle. While I enjoyed the course alright, we made the turn in about 2 hours and was informed we had to pick up the pace by the ranger. We did not have anyone behind us. This was totally unnecessary and quite frankly rude. We definitely enjoyed rock harbor in Winchester more. Will not go back here again. Also, there were dead patches in the greens. read more

Played BRS on September 3, 2016. It's not a bad track, nice views on a couple holes. Having never played the course made it a bit more difficult than it should have been. Blind tee shots on 1, 4, 9, 13 and 14 as well as an incredibly narrow 11th took some of the fun out of the round. Proshop was limited. Very small selection of balls/gloves, so if you need to stock up on something before your round, you'd best not rely on the proshop. Range balls seemed to be a collection of lost balls found on the course. The real disappointment came in the bunkers. As one of the other reviewers recently said, there really is 4 foot high grass in some of the bunkers. They have gotten to such a state of disrepair they should be embarrassed. It's unfathomable that a superintendent or groundskeeper can let all of the traps go like that. Course is on my do-not-play list until the bunkers are corrected. read more

We just played this course on Monday. Excellent condition. They water the course very well. Beautiful layout. Stay in the fariways. Rough is brutal. The greens are in very good shape, but not exceptionally fast. July and August are not great seasons for greens in this area. Nonetheless, this course is awesome. August special: $29 weekday rate!!! Your local courses are more than this and trust me, your course is nothing like this one. read more

So I'm going to start with the obvious. It's not the closest course in the world, it's not the most challenging or the longest. It is one of my favorites though. I LOVE the staff here. They are always accommodating and super friendly. They usually have great replay specials (non peak time)as well. Clubhouse is ALWAYS clean and quite comfortable. And the food is quite good for a golf course. One of my favorite amenities are the free showers that make the drive back a lot more pleasurable. I feel like I'm forgetting something...... oh the golf course. Plenty of elevation changes, blind shots and quite a bit of course management is needed. Far from the toughest course in the area if you play from the whites. Playing from the tips changes the course quite a bit but still manageable. My most memorable holes are 8, 9, 15 and 18. The one knock are the greens aren't the truest though I haven't played peak season yet. Just winter and spring however they were in wonderful shape for this time of year. read more

Do yourself a favor and go to your local driving range instead. It's not worth the drive out there and it's not worth the money. The course is in horrible shape, the bunkers are in desperate need of repair (mostly grass and no sand), standing water in the fairways and they need a new golf course marshall with better customer service skills, attitude and understanding of the game of golf. Lastly, our cart ran out of juice on hole # 16. Needless to say, I won't be wasting my time by playing here again. read more

I called on 5/29 to schedule a tee time and they gave my friend and I a 10:24am start. At 12:30pm, the marshal came by and told us we had 30 minutes to finish as they had a round robin tournament starting at 1pm. I told them that no one ever told us anything about a tournament scheduled that day otherwise we wouldn't have taken off work to play that day. The marshal got extremely upset and began to scream and threaten us that we would get kicked off the course for not playing faster. I proceeded to the clubhouse to speak with the manager and he told me that it is not his problem that we play too slow, that a good golfer can complete 18 holes in 2 hours, and that they are not required to notify anyone of a tournament being scheduled when a tee time is booked. In addition, the fact my friend and I were playing on a gift certificate which I won at a fundraiser, and the tournament players were paying customers. I cannot believe that we were treated this way. Taking a day off of work, only finishing half the course, being screamed/threatened at by the marshal because we are not "par" players, being insulted by the manager, this was the worst, most embarrassing golf outing I have ever participated in. I am still in shock that this happened. Never ever ever will I go back to this course and be made to be 3 inches tall with the worst golf skills. read more

Blue Ridge Shadows was one of my favorite golf course to play in past few years until recently. We came to the course few weeks ago and it looks somewhat good conditions. However, I found out the management/staff changed and they didn't or do not know how to take care of the course. They are growing grass and weeds from every sand traps. Really??? Tee boxes were horrible shape and I don't think they even consider take care of the course. Greens were plugged and nobody fixed the divot marks. Rough were thick and haven't mowed for a while. You give Mona Lisa painting to 5 years old and have him to draw top of that paint. That's how I felt about last golf outing. I understand now why there are so many coupons for the BRS golf course. First off, I know very little about golf. My eight-year-old son, however, is developing a love for the sport and begged me to play here after we stayed in the adjacent Holiday Inn. The price for nine holes plus golf cart was VERY reasonable. The course is pretty and seemed challenging (again, I'm no expert). I staff member who saw my son playing came over and very kindly offered him pointers on his swing. While dad drove the cart and supervised our son, I grabbed my binoculars for some "birding." I was rewarded with great views of the red-headed woodpecker--not so common in the DC suburbs and other bird life. We'll definitely be back next time we are in Front Royal. read more

It was a pleasure playing this course. I came to check it out, as I am planning a women's tournament in the spring. After reading some of the reviews I was pleasantly surprised not only by the bunkers which are under repair, but the staff as well is most courteous and the new General Mgr. Brian is outstanding. He was able to work with us on our budget and accommodate us without hesitation. I shall be bringing our tournament here in 2017 and look forward to a long business relationship with Blue Ridge Shadows. read more
