My wife loved the seafood chowder and even drove back the next day to get another bowl. Fish and chips were on point. Loved the crunch of the batter. Service was friendly and welcoming. Best calamari I've had in my life! This is a wonderful little restaurant on a very special island.

We visited 3 times on our trip to Salt Spring Island. Not expecting good eats from the only restaurant in town (Ganges, about 10 miles north, has them all) and usually ones by the water use their location to cut quality. But Rock Salt happily bucks the trend. Tuna melt had good flavor. Salads and bowls are large and fresh. Albacore tuna was perfectly seared on all sides and rare in the middle. Sangria was watery, I wouldn't get that again. Really good IPA on tap (but there was only one, along with a larger, a pilsner, and a porter) and ice cold in a chilled glass. Really hit the spot as we came during a heat wave (over 80 degrees F). Location right next to the car ferry lets you park in the ferry line, walk over and grab a quick bite, and then come back to your car in time. What the h*ll is with the staff at Rock Salt? We have been here numerous times in the past few years and we always find our selves behind a sign that says please wait to be seated. How long is the wait? Well it seems that you will wait as long as the servers say you'll wait so today I thought I would at least announce our presence. In hindsight it was a bad decision as the waitress was obviously not impressed with me disturbing her oh so important chat with another staff member which, of course was met with her ire. That was it, we now were to be frowned upon and treated as if we had ruined her whole day. We ordered our drinks and were looking over the menu but decided that if we were so much trouble for the waitress we were going to pass on the food, shortly a gentleman came to our table to ask what we wanted for food, we politely told him we had changed our minds and just wanted the drinks. He then stated that we were not welcome unless we were going to order food. That was enough for us so we stood up and told him to cancel the drinks and promptly left. We will never be back and we most certainly won't be recommending this place to anyone. read more

This place is amazing! I always look forward to visiting this restaurant during my stays on the island. It's a must! I will say, since they cut the prime rib (due to budgeting reasons) my sticky chili wings have not been so sticky. They are still amazing, but let's just say, I used to draw pictures in the leftover honey on my plate. And alas, this time there were no drawings. Don't be fooled by the words "buttermilk ranch" it ain't no buttermilk ranch. It is truly liquid gold dill dip, and you won't be disappointed unless of course you hate dill. Then you'll be disappointed. The hubs got the poutine. Gravies were good, curds were good, fries....seemed really nubby and reheated. We've had good fries before but we wonder if we got an old batch that was reheated. The portion is also a lot smaller for the price. I will visit this place every time i'm here, with no fail. The food and drinks here are fabulous, but the wait time to get in and service tending to those waiting is largely lacking. I found that people didn't even acknowledge you were there waiting for a table unless you went up to the coffee bar area to ask.. which I did. Luckily, as long as you are there before closing, they will seat and serve you, which is nice. Anyways, came here on my birthday and after a bit of a wait, was finally seated at a nice window seat. We got some nice wines and cider and some wings to start, all of which were delicious. We got the wings with salt and pepper and the buffalo sauce on the side per the recommendation of our waitress, which was a good call! Loved the salad and the dressing on the side which helped to balance everything else out. Salmon sandwich with yam fries were delicous and perfect. And the Tuk tuk bowl reminded me a little of a vermicelli bowl except with rice vs rice noodles and curry/seafood. The mussles and shrimp curry was so so good and fresh. What a great little place! We arrived just as the ferry was leaving so got a seat right away. I had the most delicious curry bowl with mussels and prawns and a tasty Moscow Mule. My husband had a fabulous tuna melt with tomato feta soup and a rhubarb cider. The setting and space are lovely and the service was excellent. We got a lovely little pumpkin tart to go with our Thanksgiving dinner later. read more

Tuk Tuk Rice bowl w/ chicken ($19.50) The flavour was good, the sauce had a good amount of spice. The chicken was super plain though. I liked that it had fresh cilantro, and the slaw added a good texture. It was a bit more watery than I think it should have been. For just under $20 it wasn't really worth it. The lower rating is really because it was a 45-minute wait, and we only found out it would be about 30 minutes in by overhearing another table. In that time we got a water refill but no opportunity to order more drinks, appetizers that might arrive sooner, or anything else to pass the time. At the end we did get an unprompted apology for the wait, but it came with a disclaimer that it could have been even slower and they went extra fast so we should be grateful. We were also seated at a table with no view of outside, which was a bit of a downer since it was out first night in town and it would have been nice to see...something. Anything to indicate we weren't just at home at a chain restaurant. A tree. Some water. A picture of a tree and some water. Anything. The food was fine but nothing to write home about. Nothing particularly fresh or locally sourced as far as I noticed. Not worth the high price and almost an hour of trying to keep my kids entertained and quiet. read more

Have been coming here every morning for a coffee and a cheese and herb scone while on island visiting family. SUCH a fabulous place to have access to right near the harbor! Great grab and go selection of foods, as well as a full service cafe in the back. The roasted yam veggie burrito was awesome! Assorted teas, coffees, scones and pastries, tiramisu, you name it....! So here I sit, in the little alcove (you will know where it is when you go into the restaurant), overlooking the ocean. At the the urging of the manager Kathleen I have order the green curry. At the suggestion of the server (red-haired guy) I went for the Salt Spring Island Brewery Nettle Ale. And I melt into my seat with pure foodie delight. The curry was perfectly balanced - a little heat to make it noticeable but not overbearing, and a beautiful blend of taste - and perfectly complemented by the light refreshing cerveza. A great atmosphere, caring and timely service and terrific tastes. I hope my ferry is late the next time I have to travel off Salt Spring Island so I have another excuse to try the rest of the menu. read more

We are traveling from Northern California to visit friends. We love this little place. We came to the restaurant 2 times while on Salt Spring island. The mussels were out of this world plump and sweet with a lovely white wine broth. Sorry they did not have the mussels the second time as I was looking forward. Love this place. Have been here on regular visits to the island. Friendly staff and although the food is reasonably quick turn-around stuff (most of their business is folk to/from the ferry) it is of a surprisingly high standard. The Asian slaw with grilled chicken is superb, as is the green seafood curry. Lovely flavours, good balance and nicely presented. Not the swishest of interiors, but clean and serviceable. Dedicated, friendly staff, busy disinfecting everything in between tables, so vigilant in doing their bit to keep Covid at bay. Bravo Rock Salt, a great place to eat. read more

Absolutely where to wait for the ferry. Come early for a morning ferry, and have a huge brunch here. You'll have a direct view of the harbor, so you'll know when you need to settle up and get down to the dock. And the servers are very conscious of the ferry schedule as well. And, if you happen to show up 1.5 hours before the next ferry, they're happy to let you drink endless cups of coffee while you wait. Pretty much all of the breakfast options come with their berry sauce, which is delicious, so I can see why. It's at its best if you get the french toast. read more

Solid place to eat. One of the favourites on Salt Spring. In typical Island fashion, everything is homemade with local ingredients, and the menu is varied catering to all types of preferences. They serve breakfast, lunch and dinner. We enjoy the burgers, the veggie is tasty and topped with sautéed mushrooms, caramelized onions, and swiss cheese. Can get very busy especially on bakery/cafe side when the ferry is coming/going. Allow lots of time and anticipate a wait... but this is Island life so sit back, relax and enjoy the view. read more

On a recent daytrip to Saltspring (visiting from Victoria and Vancouver, respectively), this place was such a gem that we stopped in three times in one day! First for lunch - we ordered take-out. I had the salmon burger, and my dad had the lamb burger. Both were exquisite. I'm a fish burger aficionado - when I'm in a coastal location and it's on the menu, I order it 99% of the time. This was the best salmon burger I've ever had, and the hand-cut fries were equally as good. We stopped in again for coffee in the afternoon, and both raved about the Saltspring Island Blue Heron coffee. If you take your coffee seriously, you can't go wrong with this cup. After two knock-it-out-of-the-park experiences, we figured we'd stick with a winner! We went back for dinner, this time we dined in. The service was as noteworthy as the food. We highly recommend this place! We enjoyed our day of feasting on the island, and will definitely frequent this gem when we're out this way again. read more

I very excited to eat here as I haven't in ages, usually great staff and on point service but not this time, I was helped by a cold inattentive counter staff while I was picking up take out for my bacon cheddar burger that unfortunately had no bacon and my fries which unfortunately had no ketchup , I was also given a fork and knife and napkins with bare hands after handling money, I left with a smile non the less and said thank you and good by and was given a empty cold stair with no reply... The grilled flat bread with 3 dips is damn good as are the crab cakes & well, everything I've tried without fail. This place is where I invented my "Nom" rating. This establishment rates 5 Noms. The prime rib tasted as if it was cooked over flame and then covered in gravy, however even with the gravy the dish was bland and tasteless, I don't mean this like I was some snotty little sophisticate, I seriously mean that it lacked taste, was boring to eat, and less than half of it was put away before I gave up in defeat. The dish was not sent back because basically I am a coward. I wanted to start off the meal with a small glass of scotch (neat) and that also had its problems. Glenlivet is not my absolute favorite brand, and while the year was not marked on the menu (my bad for not asking) I am not one of such refined tastes that I can't enjoy a quality scotch. The scotch showed up and something was wrong... I have no idea what it was aside from either it was watered down, or just.. dull. It made me sad to think that I spent 7 bucks on basically a wet fire cracker. I have fond earlier memories with this place and I am not sure what went wrong. Perhaps if I would have just stuck with a burger all would have been well, however I had spent the whole day chopping wood and wanted a treat. In the end, we had three people with a $93 dollar bill and each of us pretending the meal was great so as to not look like douches. Now I get to act like one. Sorry Rock Salt, you have a prime location, one of the very first and last to pounce on the ferry traffic, and have such a positive track record. I was in Salt Spring Island for the first time for a little getaway this past week and I was looking for a restaurant for dinner that was on this side of the island (I was visiting beautiful Ruckle Provincial Park). I searched online for some good restaurants and it led me to Rock Salt Restaurant. I had a reservation at 8pm but arrived early about 7pm. The staff was accommodating to find us a table to sit down early. She let us know that the food was coming out of the kitchen delayed because it was so busy. After we sat down, the server asked us if we would like to move seats and she led us to the table that had a fine view of the harbour. We were pleased. For appetizers, I ordered the Salt Spring mussels. These were impressive. They were locally caught and the size of these mussels were huge to me! I am used to the dinky mussel size that I order in restaurants in Vancouver so this totally surprised me. They were served in a tangy delicious sauce with a soft toasted baguette that was dope to dip in the sauce. For the mains, I had the Steelhead Salmon Filet with a creamy herb sauce served on top of a bed of coconut rice and vegetables. The salmon was so moist and delicious and cooked perfectly. I just wish there was 2 of those bad boys on the plate. But this was ok because I also got to try the Grilled Salmon Burger. I only had half of one but this was the best salmon burger I've ever had in my life! This burger was so damn moist and delicious everything inside blended so well together with every bite. Their house made tartar sauce inside the burger was off the charts. The thing that impresses me the most is that all the seafood they have is locally caught (locally as in BC). It is so nice to see that art in food form can be home grown and made here and represent. I truly recommend coming here if you are ever on the island. It is right by the ferry terminal and some of the seats in the restaurant you get a view! I do hope the chef and its staff maintain the level of quality and service that I experienced my time here. read more

This place is amazing! We had an asian salad of some sort and a carrot soup since we weren't too hungry but didn't want to be stuck eating ferry food later. The view, foremostly, is gorgeous!!!! On a sunny day, the water is so beautiful and serene. The inside is very creative. I would love to go back here and sample more of the menu. The salad was very flavourful and the carrot soup could have used more flavouring. But the flat bread that it was served with was amazing! They infuse their water with cucumber! I love that this place uses local ingredients and that the price isn't too bad, esp. for the Island. I'll be back next time. read more

The lamb burger is the best I've ever had. Every time I go there that is what I order. I always share a bite or two with a friend and I they always say, "I'm ordering that next time!" All their food is awesome, but seriously, try the lamb burger at some point. It is worth flying from the states to try it out! read more

On Saltspring Island, its easy to find gluten free eats. One new place I checked out on this year's visit, was Rock Salt. They have a gluten free menu and a great view. They are located right by the southern ferry dock, so you can literally eat and run. I decided on the Tuk Tuk rice bowl. I'm always craving rice bowls, but they are usually served with the dreaded teriyaki sauce. This bowl had your choice of chicken, salmon, mussels and prawns, or tofu, in a coconut masala sauce. I chose the chicken. The meal was tasty, but I found the sauce to be too spicy for my liking. I do enjoy a bit of a kick, but I thought this packed too much of a wallop. Great service! Even though you seat yourself, the waitress noticed our arrival and brought over some menus and waters. Definitely order the Southern Belle Nachos....so tasty and loaded with cheese. Good salsa and the perfect amount of jalapeños. I would also recommend sharing it with someone as I had to pack the majority of it to go. This place is great for kids too. We enjoyed this place so much that we came back the next morning for brunch before catching the ferry to Victoria. read more

We stayed the weekend in Ganges but made a special trip to Fulford Harbour, mostly to check this place out, and it did not disappoint! Having read that the best mussels on the island were to be found here, we of course had to try them out; but the real winner here was the yam quesadilla! Seriously, I've never had anything like this before. The combination of roasted yam with bbq sauce and the pumpkin seeds sprinkled throughout is incredibly flavorful and was absolutely stuffed full. The tortilla was super fresh, and the hand cut fries it came with were delicious. As for the mussels, they are in fact the best we've had on Salt Spring. The sauce was a light and simple white wine, and the mussels were plump and savory. We sat outside on the patio, and all though only a few of the tables have a view of the harbour it's a great atmosphere and was warm and inviting. Whether you're waiting for the ferry or visiting the island like we were, I highly recommend dining here! read more
