I've been building up the courage to leave this review since May of 2021, but I realized that it's my responsibility to share bad experiences in regards to putting permanent decision in the hands of others. I'll give the tl;dr before I even get into it: I got a disgracefully horrible tattoo. I got fucked over pretty bad. Avoid Bryan on anything that needs long, steady lines, or if you don't want your ink to go so deep it disappears. I contacted Rocket Tattoo some time in March or April of 2021 because they're a traditional shop with a good reputation. I explained what I wanted--a line-heavy b&w memorial piece (a drawing by my uncle). I was paired up with Bryan and told to come in for an initial consult. It went fine. Appointment day came and I explained that I was nervous as this would be my first tattoo. The stencil went on good and Bryan started on the tattoo. It was bad. I learned a few things when I went to go and get my tattoo salvaged. First, my tattoo with Bryan hurt WAY more than it should have. It's pretty common to feel more pain when you get new ink laid over old ink, but, compared to what Bryan did to me, I felt almost nothing during my fix-up at a different shop. I have a high pain tolerance which is also increased by a medication side-effect (go gabapentin!!). Bryan's work actually hurt. It felt like snapping sutures. Tearing an earring straight through your lobe. Getting slapped with a textbook. Getting touched with a knife fresh off the flame. It left me bruised purple. The work I had done to fix Bryan's felt like a tickle. Second thing I learned was that my tattoo was appalling. Horrible. Upsetting. I knew this, but hearing it from professionals gave me the courage to write this review. My tattoo was less than three years old, but looked 30 years old. I followed after care to a T and still ended up with my uncle's beautiful art a fucked up smudge on my leg. (Not to mention divergence from the reference, but my photos should tell you that much.) The line thickness was different throughout the piece despite the original work being one line weight. There were waves and bumps where my uncle's steady hand made graceful curves. There were even skips in the lines. By the time one year rolled around, some parts had almost completely faded. I don't have any photos of this because I was so upset with what I had on my body. Shitty work. Devastating results. But I'm not going to let myself cry over something that can't be undone. Just telling people to beware. read more

Came in as a walk in at around 5 pm and was seen right away! The space is super bright, clean and well decorated and I immediately felt at ease. I got a simple branch design on top of my middle finger and the process was quick and painless. Eddy was very collaborative and worked me through a couple different options before we chose the design. The price was also super reasonable and included the option to return and get touch ups if needed. Overall it was exactly the experience I was hoping for! I'll preface this with saying that the tattoo my wife got looks good, though it would be difficult not to ink such an easy design well. She's satisfied with the tattoo, but the service was a little questionable. In fairness, miscommunication from both her and the artist's ends played a large part in her dissatisfaction, but in the case of permanent bodily defacement, I feel like everything, including pricing should be made crystal clear, and that responsibility lies on the artist doing the pricing. A special was advertised on Rocket Tattoo's social media feed, which drew her in - variations on a simple heart with text inside from dozens of catalogue images, or a 'make your own' option were advertised as $60 for one heart; $80 for two; $100 for three. We arrived on Saturday knowing the Friday-Saturday sale would still be occurring, presented the artist our 'make your own design,' asked how much it would be, and if they would honor a previously-won $50 credit as partial payment. The artist said that "they typically have a $100 minimum, but he could do $50 for the simple design." This was the first miscommunication, as it wasn't made clear whether this included the $50 credit or whether the credit would cover the entirety of the tattoo. My wife made some assumptions at this time in consideration of the heart promotion: that because the 'make your own' design she presented required less color, it would cost less, accounting for the disparity between the advertised $60 and spoken $50, and that the promotion was still being honored - both pretty reasonable. Elated, she sat down and got the tattoo. To her dismay, however, when it came time to pay, it turned out the tattoo would cost $50 in addition to the $50 credit, proving my wife's second assumption, that the promotion was still going on, or that it was a parlor-wide, not artist-specific promotion, false. A few last qualms: for $100, the artist probably could have said something to the effect of 'this is a pretty simple tattoo and I can probably do a bit more for $100.' Second, I'm sure the artist could have made the association between the desired heart shape and the promotion, and should have alerted my wife that either he wasn't offering the promotion but his coworker was, or that it was no longer being offered, whichever the case was. read more
