Great atmosphere & service and excellent food. On the recommendation of the concierge at our hotel we made a last minute reservation, and we're glad we did. In a renovated older Art Deco office building the dining area is three floors. We were seated in a quiet side room which was great for conversation. The wine list was very good and our waitress was able to recommend a wonderful Australian white since we were ordering seafood. Both dishes we ordered were simply wonderful. Dessert was also great and I enjoyed an Australian dessert wine. I'd go again. For two of us with wine and cocktails dinner was $280 AU and worth every penny. read more

For an entry level Neil Perry dining experience, we headed to Rockpool Bar and Grill to sample the famous David Blackmore Wagyu burger, and some of his scrumptious dessert! Food: We ordered two mains and a dessert between two people - the highly rated steak, the David Blackmore Wagyu Burger and the crème caramel to finish. The burger was so delicious, with the meat being tender and perfectly cooked. The only thing I didn't enjoy as much was the zuni pickle, which I felt didn't complement the rest of the flavours in the burger, and was difficult to eat. While we were told there was no sides with the bar menu, it came out with a small salad. We ordered the steak medium well, and found that the marinade was reminiscent of tandoori and Indian flavours. The meat was extremely tender, and we enjoyed it immensely. Finally, the course I was most excited for - dessert! We opted for the crème caramel off the full Rockpool Bar and Grill menu, and it didn't disappoint. Creamy and rich, it melted in my mouth, and the accompanying sauce soaked through, leaving it dripping with caramel and a decadent delight. Ambience: Walking into Rockpool Bar and Grill, I couldn't help but be wowed by the two tier dining experience, and the high ceilings and spacious atmosphere. The bar similarly did not disappoint, with glasses hanging from the ceiling of the service area, and cosy chairs for small groups. Super expensive place. Everyone was dressed to the 9s. It's like stepping into the movie set in a James Bond movie. Ceilings must be 40 feet high. Wait staff was super attentive and courteous. They make you feel like a million dollars even if you are wearing sweat pants and t shirt like I was. $70 abalone was exquisite. Pretty much the best abalone I ever had. Dessert was unique. The wine list is very extensive as well as the different spirits from all over the world. Very insightful and I was prepared to try more than a few as it was my birthday. Unfortunately, the sommelier only came by to offer me a first drink, which was a $45 glass of 2 oz sherry. He did not come back to ask me how I like it, or to offer me another beverage after I had specified earlier I would try the other ones as well. I had the drink menu open on my table for the duration of my meal and after I was done eating he finally came over to ask me if I wanted another drink. The food was delicious. Worth the price. Seriously their gastronomy is a real treat. But when nobody comes by to do their "two-bite" check to ensure that everything is to my liking, to make sure I have everything I need, or to answer any questions about what is on my plate, both after the appetizer and after the entrée, this poses a serious problem. Especially in an establishment such as this one. Sure the servers are very knowledgable but inattentive. For a place such as this one it just ruined the experience. read more

Adore the cocktails here - all heavenly. Wine list is lovely and the recommendations are spot-on. I always start with the crudo - it is divine. Best sashimi (or pseudo sashimi) I've had in Sydney. The steak is always excellent, as is the pasta if you're not looking for a red meat hit. Desserts are lovely but seem quite expensive (over the $20 mark) - I often have the cupcake as I'm too full for anything more substantial. It's hyper-lux art deco design in the bar, with fewer than a dozen tables literally overshadowed by thousands of Riedel wine glasses suspended like a massive vino chandelier above the bar. The lighting and ambiance is great, appearing dark and romantic but your table is well lit. We found the background music really enjoyable. The dishes here are extremely complex an inventive combinations of flavors and textures. As we chatted with the staff they described one sauce having 19 ingredients. It is sometimes hard to anticipate the resulting taste which can mean you get that wonderful surprise where you just pause and say out loud, this tastes so good. Excellent Girls Night out was had here of a Friday night. Waitress was knowledgeable and attentive, and having got a prime table next to the kitchen, us girls got ready to dig in. Highlights were for us the desserts- the chocolate fondant was sweet and complex, the laminations and petite fours tasty inexpensive options and definitely worth it, and the teas on offer were what all tea drinkers crave- beautifully presented and beautifully scented. Oh and the mains....gnoccetti was small and won't fill you up like full gnocchi can; the pie was a little salty for my friends liking but plenty of it, pork sausages were flavoursome, fish cooked well, chicken grill was worth the wait. For overall food, ambience and service, Rockpool Is a real treat. read more

We came in to grab a late lunch after we searched for Sydney's best burger and read that Rockpool (the bar and grill version) was the place to have it. Despite coming only 30 minutes before lunch service was closed, it was still pretty packed, and we ended up getting a seat in the quieter (paradoxically) bar room. Overall, the space definitely has a very grand feel to it, with high ceilings, but the bar room felt a bit quieter as the lighting was a tad dimmer. The food came out pretty quickly, although my waitress did forget my drink order the first time, and after bringing our food out, she only bothered checking in once it was clear it was time for the bill. The drink menu (at least for cocktails, beers, and other drinks) is quite a bit more extensive relative to the full-service restaurant that does dinner, and the Warwick Zacapa was a very drinkable, blood orange-infused cocktail that I really liked. The mint julep, though, while served in a unique fashion (it was served in a wide-bottom glass, with the ice stacked on top), was a bit less impressive. For lunch service, the cocktail prices are definitely on the higher end as well. Food-wise, we kept it simple: we got the wagyu burgers, along with a side of fries with wagyu gravy. It might be somewhat heretical of me to say, but I was not that impressed with the burger. The first issue, which the waitress probably should have warned me about, is that getting the burger cooked above medium-rare pretty much destroys any kind of flavoring that the meat might have. I ended up going medium on my burger, and it was definitely overcooked. My wife's was medium-rare and definitely retained more succulence and a bit more flavor. Nonetheless, relative to some of the very flavorful burgers I have had elsewhere (primarily in New York), the patty doesn't really taste like much, and even my wife's patty did not seem to have a lot of the fatty succulence that wagyu is known for. The other issue plaguing the burger was that there are too many toppings on it. To me, the best burger I've had is very simple - Minetta Tavern's Black Label has some onions on top, but that is it. Here, there was bacon, gruyere cheese, sweetened onions, overly sweet pickles, as well as lettuce and tomato on the side that you can add on. Too much happening, with only the pickles (which coincidentally is one of my least favorite burger condiments to start, although good pickles I do not mind) really standing out. So while it tasted like I was eating a hearty meal, it was a mishmash of flavors. I probably liked the fries better overall - hearty cuts and well-salted. The 'gravy' was almost like chili, as it had copious bits of meat in it as well, but it paired very well with the fries. We were also served something that looks like ketchup as well but is really more of a watery tomato sauce...I would definitely recommend just sticking with Heinz for a good old-fashioned burger experience if I were in the restaurant's shoes. In all, this was a bit of a disappointing experience, especially since we had a great dinner at Rockpool 1989 the previous night. The burger didn't live up to the hype, and while the sides and cocktails were spectacular, I'm not sure it justifies the costly premium of dining here. I would almost certainly try something else on the menu if I were to come back again. read more

Wow!!! Talk about fine dining and this place is the best definition. I ordered the octopus salad and it was mouth watering delicious. It was so fresh I couldn't stop eating. My friend ordered the mash potatoes and fig. Both were very good and tasteful. The service was up to standard and the atmosphere was phenomenal. I love coffee and especially iced coffee. At the end I ordered iced coffee and it was the best I had in all of Australia. read more

This is a special place. The grandeur of the space, especially those huge marble columns, immediately suggests this and the service and food matches. This is a large restaurant with different levels so you have plenty to look at. I went with my sister for a long overdue girls night out and we were able to chat easily without having to yell or worse, whisper. I imagine large groups would work well here. Although the restaurant was busy, there were enough staff available to fill up our water glasses, take drink orders and get meals to us in good time. The staff knew details about menu items when questioned and offered suggestions, pointing out popular items and signature dishes when we had trouble deciding from the big menu. We had some tasty mocktails - this is not always the case when dining somewhere well known for its extensive wine list so I was pleasantly surprised. While you can order chicken or vegetarian etc dishes, this is a beef restaurant. The beef is aged on the premises I believe and details about the cut and whether it was grass or grain fed etc are written on the menu. When asked, staff can explain the different textures and tastes to help you choose. My sister ordered grass fed on the bone. The serving was huge. I ordered grain fed and it was served sliced (although obviously cooked as one piece). I read another reviewer who didn't like that, but I actually thought it made for nice presentation to be able to see the pink inside. Both were delicious but we both preferred the one we'd chosen. You order sides separately. For dessert we chose creme caramel and a chocolatey orange thing. Both were delicious but to my surprise, my sister's choice (the creme caramel) was by far the pick of the two. I'm a major chocoholic and to be honest I thought that ordering creme caramel was a bit boring - why not be more adventurous in such a fancy place? But that creme caramel was truly divine and if I'm lucky enough to eat at Rockpool Bar and Grill again, I already know what I will be having for dessert. Overall we had a great night. Was this influenced by the fact that I was child-free for the first time in months and was able to spend some quality time with my sister? Sure. And yes my budget does not allow me to eat like this often. But even allowing for that, I just can't see it being less than 4 stars, and from my visit, I'm giving it 5. read more

Delicious! After being constantly disappointed by every meal I ate in Sydney, I came here and was pleasantly surprised. It was a rainy day and my sister and I came back from shopping in very casual attire. We thought it wouldn't be so fancy, but we got in and boy were we wrong. Do not come here wearing a Tshirt and jeans. We got seated in the bar area quickly and ordered the wagyu burger and prawn po boy. Absolutely delicious. Both dishes were cooked to perfection. Meh. Beautiful space. Fabulous wine list. I had the seafood stew which was very much like a pared down bouillabaisse. The squid and octopus, which accounted for about half the seafood, were rubbery and over cooked. The octopus was also portioned too large to pick up with the spoon and too tough to cut with a fork and knife! But the broth was heavenly and perfectly spiced with saffron. My husband had the wagyu beef bolognese. The beef was tender and tasty but the sauce lacked complexity. The fettuccine was light and fresh. The service was competent and somewhat cold. We were left waiting for quite a while for someone to take our drink order. They have a mind boggling menu and I suspect we simply chose poorly but it's not a gamble I would make again based on this experience. read more

SIT IN ... Gotham City, without the creepy Joker. Too much marble and a bit too sterile to suit the "Bar and Grill" name, I think. NIBBLE ON ... the bluefin tuna tartare, Moroccan eggplant, cumin mayonnaise and harissa ($34) to start, with delicate, fresh chunks of tuna and a cumin-spiced eggplant that surprisingly does not overpower. Transition to milk-fed lamb (Perry loves his beef every which way, but it's not my thing) with autumn vegetable vignole and aioli ($49). The rotisserie-fired lamb shoulder is perfectly tender, and comes in a very generous portion of 6 or so medallions and blade. The vignole, using stewed seasonal peas, leeks, artichokes and broad beans, gives the dish a refreshing air to match the grassiness of the lamb. The only misfire is the overly oily, garlicly aioli -- ask for it sans or on the side. A sweet or tart sauce would be a much better pairing. Onion rings and sauteed broccoli and leeks with lemon ($9 each) are pricey but simple, satisfying sides. Finish with the stewed rhubarb, strawberry and almond pudding with vanilla sauce poured tableside ($23), a wonderfully comforting warm dessert with a lightly whipped cream, sitting on top of stewed red fruits and an almond pudding cake base. Caramelized sugar bits on top add fun crunch. It's huge, though, and assuredly shareable. SIP FROM .... one of one of the 6,500 cocktail glasses, or one of the wonderful wines on the insane 150+ page wine list. SPEAK TO ... the highly (almost too) efficient waitstaff, whose uniforms are too heavily starched for what a joint like this is going for, with any requests -- they are more than willing to accommodate.
