The other tattoo artists may be great - and by the reviews many seem to be - but Pete Silva is the absolute worst, a scam artist, and quite possibly the least professional person with which I've ever dealt. Not only did he not do a thing regarding the design of our anniversary tattoos, he proceeded to go against all of our agreement and kept our $200 deposit, producing absolutely nothing but a series of rude messages. Got my first ever tattoo from Erik and the whole process start to finish was just a breeze. Came in and talked about my idea, then set up a day like a week later. Came in on the day, he got the design done in about an hour and it was just perfect. Design was bigger than either of really expected it to be, but he stuck to his original price point which was super awesome of him. I have been going to Pete at Rockstar Tattoo & Co. for the last 5 years and within that timeframe, he has complete 9 tattoos on my right arm. Initially I didn't know what direction I wanted to go in regarding a sleeve, a solo piece or other ideas I had. Pete introduced me to the idea of a "sticker" sleeve, and has completely executed every idea I have asked him to create for my arm. Out of the 9 tattoos (so far), I couldn't pick a favorite. His line work and color work are consistent, and he knew the exact type of kitsch style I was aiming for. I would highly recommend Pete if you are looking for an artist in the Milwaukee area. He is punctual, very reasonable on pricing and makes sure you are 100% into your design with no pressure of any changes or other ideas. I have never been to a "suburban" tattoo place and really wasn't expecting the top notch service and quality. I went with a group of friends and were lucky to get Brock because of a last minute cancellation. Brock is one of the best tattoo artists I have ever worked with. He had some great recommendations for the designs we were considering. Also, it was very nice to have a enclosed room. Also, I thought the pricing was very reasonable for the quality of the product. You know, this place has really great reviews. Even in the "not recommended" section there are mostly good reviews. Mmmm my review. I'm kinda on the fence about this. See, the shop is nice! It's a location that was pretty easy to find, plenty of parking, decent waiting area and most importantly, clean. This shop has something a lot of other shops don't have: a receptionist. I find this professional and organized of their facility. They clearly are working with a high volume of customers. That's a good thing! Their website is also informative and helpful. Well the guy I wanted to book was Dan, specifically for a watercolor design my best friend designed for both of us. The most unfortunate part of this is that Dan wasn't available for us. Again, sucks for us but good for him. He pointed us in the direction of Erik. Mind you, my friend is not from here so we needed to coordinator this to a specific day. So I was very understanding of the limited availability. So, Erik; I saw some of his work prior to my visit, so I was like okay, he should be able to handle this. I gave him my deposit and we were booked. Cut to the actual day. We had slight changes that needed to be made. Erik was very nice and professional and he took the changes with stride. My mistake was explaining to him how we expected the watercolor to look instead of SHOWING him. Because he acted as if he understood, but then when we got the watercolor done, it was NOT how we wanted it to look. I take partial fault in this, HOWEVER it was very obvious that he was just not skilled in watercolor. If he wasn't comfortable doing watercolor or let us know it wasn't really his thing, we would have just kept the tattoo as it was. Now I have a lot of tattoos. All of them except one are watercolor. All of them different styles. So I know exactly how watercolor should look...and this ain't it! To top it off, he took very long setting up. So we were there a long time. That actually is worth mentioning for people who have time restraints, but was mostly a nonissue. My biggest issue was the fact that he charged us both $120 for a tattoo that a) wasn't done properly, b) did not take an hour to complete. In fact, my friends only took 30 minutes. Mine probably about 45. She didn't tip much though. And c) only noticeable after I started healing is a random purple tattoo line that isn't a part of anything in the tattoo itself!!! How? Why?! Obviously he accidentally marked me. Ugh. Trust me, I understand what it takes to tattoo. I have paid really good money for all of my tatts and I have tipped well over 20%. This tattoo was not worth $150, which is what I gave (Because I'm a decent human being and I don't hate the guy or my tatt). The watercolor mistake, thank GOD, is actually an easy fix my go-to artist can do. But now I'm going to have to pay more to do that. So. That's frustrating. If you've learned anything from my review, let it be this. If you have a specific idea of how you want your tattoo to look, be clear and be 100% your artist has the skills your looking for. Not all artist are created equal, which is what makes every one so unique. I'm not knocking Erik or this place. Stars are based on my experience, but I think that this place has quality artists and you definitely should look into who can give you what you're looking for! read more

Erik Nelson is the most talented and gifted artist I've ever worked with. He at times is very blunt about what will work in a tattoo, and I truly can appreciate his honesty because tattoos are permanent. The man has a fabulous eye for tattoo placement as well as black and white shading. I came to him to start my horror themed leg and he said that he is ultimately trying to work away from doing horror realism pieces anymore, but he went out of his way to work my vision into his schedule. I was excited to get my first tattoo and took a picture of the tattoo I wanted when I went in to Rockstar. I talked to Patrick and we talked about the picture and he said he could do it and we made an appointment for two weeks later. When I arrived for the tattoo with the same picture we discussed he told me that he couldn't do everything I wanted. Even though he said two weeks earlier he could do it. Mind you this wasn't a difficult ask. A moon and some birds. I reminded him we talked about it and he said ok at the time. He went off about some artist integrity and how the tattoo would look 20 years from now (no one will remember you did it, dude). He refused to do what he originally agreed to do and I still got the moon which took him 3 minutes to do. The whole time I had to listen to him talk about how he prefers to do color tattoos blah blah blah. Whatever, dude, you said you would do it. Thankfully I found another artist at another place to add more to this tattoo. So don't do what I did and let some guy back out on what he agreed to do. Would never go back. read more

I got my first tattoo here a year and a half ago. It was my first tattoo. I chose this place because a friend of mine got an awesome one by Ashley. I called and the man who answered the phone was very gruff and intimidating. He said Ashley was booked out 3 months so I said I'd go with somebody else. He asked who I wanted and I said I didn't really mind because I'd never been here before. He kept telling me to name somebody, so I literally had their site pulled up with artists and kept going down the line until he said somebody was available, which was Eric. Eric said I could come that day for a consult, so I was there within 20 mins. I should've hung up and went elsewhere, but it was my first and I didn't know any better. I wanted a tattoo of a word in a middle eastern language that I've known my entire life. I told him what it was over the phone and when I got there he said, "You wanted the kanji, right?" I think he called it kanji 2-3 times during the whole process which annoyed me. Still went through with it and got the tattoo, which turned out pretty good. I should've went back for a touch up but my experience was so negative, I didn't want to go back. He was very condescending towards me as well which I hate. I look young even though I am into my 20s. He knew my age at the time and still talked to me like a child. I've since gotten a half sleeve and will be getting another one soon. The shop was clean and nice, but the vibe was bad. Please listen to yourself if you get a bad feeling about a shop!! I would've went someplace else and had a better experience if I did. read more

I had been hemming and hawing about a new tattoo since my last one almost two years ago, but hadn't found a shop in MKE that I was dead set on going to. During this time I moved from the East Side to West Allis and was a little dismayed at the lack of reviewed shops in this area. One of my roommates works right near Rockstar and has talked to several of the artists at his workplace, and his assurances that they are friendly folks spearheaded my decision to go in and see about getting some work done. I did some preliminary research online (not much to be found outside of a Facebook page and their website) and reviewed some artist portfolios, and when I entered the shop with what I knew was a design that would be hard to tattoo, I was a bit nervous & feeling unprepared. The shop is neat, tidy, and clean and there is ample workspace in the back and an equally ample waiting area up front. The receptionist directed me to review the portfolios they had in the waiting area and pick an artist, which was difficult because I didn't see anything like the style I had in mind and they all seem pretty darn competent. My roommate suggested I work with Ashley, whose portfolio I felt was the best fit for me. So I presented her with the artwork I had in mind, we discussed how to make it more tattooable (the placement, colors, and the like), I made a downpayment, and booked an appointment for the next month which was June of this year. When I went in for the actual appointment, I was feeling much more at ease. Ashley showed me her draft, asked a few questions about line thickness and pinned down (not literally, ha ha) the placement, and had me check it in the mirror twice. She made sure I was comfortable before starting, and frequently checked in with me during it. We stopped once for a breather and because my arm was falling asleep and maybe I had dosed off and drooled on the chair a little... maybe. I'm a little embarrassed to say that I may have teared up a bit when I saw the final product. It was that good. I'm just astounded at her ability to take someone else's artwork - watercolor artwork at that - and translate it to the body so well. I'm thinking that if I ever again have the budget for a quality tattoo, I'll have her do a truly custom piece. Finally, she briefly advised me on aftercare knowing that I've had previous tattoos, gave me an aftercare reminder flyer, and suggested that I stop in after it's healed to see if any touchups are needed, which, um, I still need to do. read more

This is by far the best shop out of all the shops I've gotten a tattoo. I got a tattoo done by Ashley in April 2013, and one by Patrick in December 2015. They really know how to take your idea and elevate it beyond what you imagined! They're also super professional, clean, and the shop has a very chilled out atmosphere that I love! I was lucky enough to get both of mine done as a walk-in, but definitely make an appointment. They are very busy these days! My tattoo was pretty simple/basic, so I was in and out in 5 minutes. During the consult, you then book your actual appointment. My tattoo artist was nice, professional, patient and made me feel very comfortable. I appreciated that he let me slightly modify where exactly I wanted my tattoo. I called Rockstar to set up a consultation and it turns out the artist I wanted to work with, Jay, had a no show that day...so I was able to come in right away and get the tattoo! This was going to be my first tattoo and I was very nervous, but Jay immediately made me feel at ease. We talked about design for a bit and he quickly understood the look I was hoping for. I didn't have many specifications/limitations, so it was cool to see my basic idea come to life through Jay's creativity. He talked me through the entire process, checked in to see if I was doing okay, and made sure to ask my opinion throughout. Beyond his incredible artwork, Jay was laidback, humorous, and easy to talk to. The other staff members I interacted with were great too...Lauren, the receptionist, was busy with phone calls but was still able to help me with the paperwork and payment efficiently. (no one there) I wanted to give her a hug when I saw what she had done, it's finally looking like something I would be proud to show off. In my initial consultation I wanted to schedule an appointment with Brock, the owner but he was booked. I instead got an appointment with Patrick, he seemed nice. I told him my idea, he said it was possible to do. So I made sure to emailed him the pictures a week and a half before the appointment. When I showed up for my appointment, he asked if I brought the pictures. At first he said he didn't receive the email, then he said it he had just opened the email. So he wasn't prepared and didn't have the sketch for me. He told me at the consultation that he would have the sketch done before the appointment and to show up 30 minutes prior so that we could tweak it together. He went in the back to start on the sketch, while I was sat there thinking it was already done and that I was going to be called back to get my design. Long story short the communication failed, he wasn't able to satisfy my wants and I ended up waiting in the lobby for nearly two hours before leaving. I didn't want to commit to a rushed design that wasn't what I envisioned. It sucks because I was excited about getting my first tattoo here, the shop was clean and seemed professional. I would have appreciated it if he was open and honest with me about not being able to come up with my design so that my time wouldn't have been wasted on my birthday. I would have also liked to have worked on the design together so that it could have been both of our inputs instead of just his design or idea. Maybe he just didn't want to tattoo my idea, and I would have been okay with that if he openly stated that. Because of the shady communication, lack of diversity in the shop, and wasted time I have to rate my experience a one star. read more

This is a very nice, clean shop in a great location with plenty of parking. I worked with Brock, also known as Mr. Pink Ink. I had a double mastectomy a few years ago and have undergone several surgeries since then as part of the reconstruction process. The final stage was to have the nipples tattooed. Brock was extremely patient with me in helping me decide exactly what I wanted for my tattoo. He made sure that I felt entirely comfortable before he started. I am so thrilled with my end result!
