Service and house margaritas were poor but the food was good. The Texas margarita was much better but pricey.

It was fair. The salsa is a bit like tomato sauce. The margaritas are a mix and green. I didn't care for them. I had a chile relleno and a street taco. The chile relleno was good enough, but it was breaded. I prefer no breading. I order chicken on my taco, but it came with steak on it. The waiter was kind, and he took it off of my bill. $30 for 2 people and my wife almost had to roll me out to the car. The food is great, the portions are huge, and the prices are reasonable. The only downside is they don't have a hostess, so if its busy you have to wait in a line that goes out the door and into the miserable Alabama heat. Two for lunch here on Thursday, 8 Dec. We both had: 1 cheese enchilada, 1 bean burrito, rice, and sweet tea. Positives: sweet tea was good; chips and salsa good; food was good. Negatives: wife's cup was cracked and tea leaking onto table-waiter acted bothered and replaced with no comment. When meal finished, waiter asked if done, took dishes, then we waited for quite a while before he finally appeared and dropped check in a rush on table, rushed off to side of the place before we could get his acknowledgement on us asking for 2 teas to go. When he finally came over to see why we were still at the table and we asked (again) for 2 teas to go-he said, "oh," and walked off to get the teas. We waited patiently at the register for the mgr to quit yapping on the phone, so we could pay him and leave. When he finally got off the phone and takes my card,he drops the pen and the receipt on the counter, and after he asks us if we want a receipt, (and tell him yes please),he acted like it ruined his day, drops the receipt on the counter-during the whole transaction he acted like he was just too busy to deal with paying customers. I said thank you; he ignored us; we won't be there again. This is 4th time we have dined there since they first opened in Troy & our last. All 4 visits have been the same-trying to herd us out of there, even though were not busy during our time there, and service ranging from slow, to hostile. We ended up eating at Rodeo's because the recommended BBQ joint was closed on Monday (it's also within walking distance of our hotel). We were pleasantly surprised at the quality and quantity of the meals! Huge basket of chips with salsa (if you like it hot, ask for the hotter option and mix it with the regular salsa for a kick)! Traveling through Troy, AL February 2020 we decided to eat at a place that was familiar with, so we chose Rodeo Mexican Restaurant again. Never again! Once seated, I excused myself and went to use the restroom. Upon leaving the restroom I went to wash my hands and the bathroom didn't have any soap. My question to the server; how are the cooks, food preps and food servers washing their hands? He didn't seem like he understood. The thought of eating food that was prepped, cooked and served by staff that hasn't wash their hand was upsetting. With the thought of being exposed to the lack of personal hygiene of the staff was sick. My other thoughts, the flu and the passing of viruses. I was served the absolute coldest Negra Modelo beer on earth! The service was impeccable and friendly beyond experience. I ordered the Carne Asada, and while the meat wasn't quite as thinly sliced as it should have been, it did not lack flavor. The portions were huge and rice, beans, guacamole, pico de gallo, and salsa were awesome. OKAY y'all! So some of the negative reviews had me wondering, but never fear! This place is El Supremo! The servers are so great. We got seated right away and were treated to a warm bowl of tortilla chips and salsa. The salsa is very good. A lot of places that are authentic serve you basically tomato water but the salsa here was great. I had a jumbo margarita which definitely tasted great. The atmosphere is wonderful. You can carry on a conversation but the music is upbeat classical Spanish type music. I am so sorry I am not an expert in Mexican music or Spanish music and I imagine that are a million genres. All I know is Gloria Estefan and she's not even Mexican. But the music is soooo good. The paintings are fun. The food was dynamite. I had the nachos and, okay listen...the nachos are buried in there and yes they are soggy fast, but grab a fork because the taste is OUT OF THIS WORLD. I was so impressed with this place. So, I was on the road, for business. I was staying in the Courtyard by Marriott, right next door. I read some reviews and decided to walk over and try the Rodeo Mexican restaurant. I walked in a little after 8PM on a weeknight. The place was pretty crowded with locals...a good mix of family and friends, it seemed. The place is not shiny and new, nor is it high-tech and glitzy. It was closer to a hole-in-the-wall, but better than that. I was a small, probably family-run, local, one-off place. It was simple and to the point. Music was what you'd expect, decor was traditional, and you felt like you were going to get what you expected. I was greeted by a little guy who barely spoke English. He turned out to be my host and part-time waiter (more about that in a minute). He brought me chips and salsa and a menu. Salsa was fresh, mild, and on the thin side. The chips were fresh, not too salty, but most were too dark...caramelized to the point of tasting odd. The menu is large and varied. There is the usual (burritos, nachos, enchiladas, etc.), but there is a lot more, and their take on things is unique and refreshing. I chose the Taco Loco (beef). However, I wasn't actually able to order it for about 15 minutes. It turns out my "waiter" was hanging out by the bar, talking and laughing, with what looked like, another waiter and a manager. I had to get their attention before he actually went back into "waiter mode"...not very professional or appreciated. When I placed the order I asked for some beer, also. The menu listed a domestic that I wanted. They did not have it, he replied. I showed it to him, on the menu. No, they don't carry that beer. Okay, give me a different brand. I asked for a large draft. In about 5 minutes, my large draft arrived. It was a huge mug...more like a traditional beer stein. I didn't actually know until I read the bill, but it was 32oz, and only cost $5! Good deal! My crazy taco arrived and I was a bit disappointed at first. The reluctant waiter guy dropped it off confirming my order, "Steak Taco Loco". Wait...I ordered beef. I assumed it was ground beef. Never assume, but I wasn't about to get into the finer points of Mexican cuisine through broken English and not having the right accent, for his understanding. No worries. I'd see how it went from here. The steak had been cut into very small pieces and cooked perfectly, except for some pieces being seared and burned. I don't like my steak like that. However, the taste was better than I expected...smokey and flavorful, still tender and having some color in the middle. Pepper and onions were tender, but with a bit of snap left in them. The guacamole was very nice (but nowhere as good as my wife's!). The quality was actually pretty high and I really liked the crazy taco dish. I would order it again. The Rodeo Mexican was not fine-dining, nor a diner. It was a great example of what we have all through our nation...small, unique, comfortable little establishments that have their own take on this or that. In this case, Mexican was the cuisine. It was way better than the boring take by a chain restaurant. If you are in the area and want Mexican, you really should stop by and give this place a try. I think you'll enjoy it too. read more
