The Chicken Shack seems to be somewhat of an institution in the small town of Luverne, Alabama. I'm not sure when it was founded, but I feel like people's granddads have been eating this fried chicken since back in the day. It's down-home, chicken centered, priced just right, and it's frying up chicken in a way that will make you question everything you thought you knew about this noble bird. Look, words aren't gonna convey it but I'll try...it's like this...fried chicken in all its crispy and savory glory, but with the tenderness of braised, fall-off-the-bone chicken somehow. I don't know how they're doing it, but that's what they're doing. So tender, so fried. Just amazing. I've been here enough times to say that it is consistent, and that if you go, you'll love it. Aside from all that, the people are super friendly, (Luverne is, in fact, the friendliest city in the south according to a sign I saw). The place is clean and unpretentious. The prices are a breath of fresh air. And the chicken...the chicken is on a level all it's own. Don't live out your life without going here. One of the few restaurants open in Luverne, AL on a Sunday. We were glad to try it passing through going to PCB. While standing around waiting for our food, several locals recommended ordering ahead by calling or ordering online. Haha, I guess they all know otherwise the wait would be long! Food was very fresh when we got our order 45 minutes later. Everything was pipping hot! Kids really enjoyed their hot dog & burger. The grilled shrimps were good sized and good flavor - cooked well. The chicken fingers were pretty good too. Overall a good experience and definitely on the list as a good potential next time we drive through Luverne again! read more

Just a great roadside place for fried chicken and southern sides. Popular with locals and travelers alike. Friendly service and very affordable prices. Don't ask for "unsweet tea" - it seems to have only 2 TBS of sugar per glass as opposed to 6 for sweet tea. But the awesome fried chicken carries the meal. This is a great family/hole in the wall place in a small town on the way to the beach and well worth the stop. They have chicken items all fried along with catfish and some other fish options. This is a nice old town place. The appetizers all looked great we went for the cheese sticks. The 1/2 check plate comes with two sides which was nice. They also have snack size plates which worked well for the kids. Overall the food was great and a fun stop on the way to or from the beach. I wanted to go to another establishment in Andalusia but they were closed. I decided to keep driving down Route 29 and wound up here. I entered in the back and grabbed a seat at a table. My waitress came by right away and got me a Pepsi and I placed my order. I got a full order of chicken strips. It came with fries and coleslaw. Total for everything including tip was just under $12.00. On to the food.......... Chicken Strips- You get about 5 pieces of white meat chicken strips. They were breaded in a thin coating and were decent sized pieces. The taste was good. Nothing amazing but it hit the spot for some fried chicken strips. I would get them again if I came back. Fries- Regular crinkle cut fries. They were ok. Coleslaw- Unfortunately didn't try any of this. It didn't look too appealing and I only like one coleslaw anyways (Phils BBQ). Pepsi- Besides sweet tea, it seems like the drink of choice down here in Alabama is Pepsi. (They did have a Pepsi plant/bottling facility right across the street too). My waitress kept my glass filled. I have been noticing that restaurants down here always make sure your thirst is quenched. Halfway through my soda, my waitress came and topped me off and then left a half glass by my side to fill up myself later. I appreciated that! Service- Southern Hospitality at its finest. My waitress was smiling and asked me "Do you know what you will be having to eat?" Most people out West are like "Are you ready to order?" with a plain jane tone. People down here treat you like family and like you are eating in their house. I have not had bad service yet. Even while paying the bill, they were all smiles and friendly as can be! Stopped here on the way back from Panama City Beach taking back roads back to Chattanooga. Seemed like this was the only place we could find for miles and actually turned around based on Yelp Reviews and number of cars in Parking lot. It was a great idea. This is just a simple local restaurant, nothing fancy, free off street parking and inside is simple with lots of tables and booths. No alcohol though (-1) LOL.... We were there around 12 Noon I think on a Monday. We could not believe the prices and the quality of the food. I had the chicken breast with fries and was very good. Oh except for the hotdogs, not good. I ordered on for my Grandbaby and it is small, too red and tasted awful; avoid the dog!. Otherwise the food was great. The service was fast but they were so busy they really did not seem friendly. Worst customer service EVER!! i called in a large order ahead of time. Drove 15 mins to restaurant. The girl at the window was so rude. I gave her my name and explained I called in an order. She just said. "Yea ok. I'll be with you in a minute" She didn't check to see if my food was ready (which it was-I could see the bag) She continued to help the locals....after 20+ people were helped and waiting for 25 minutes another employee asked for my name and gave me my order. The bag that had been sitting there since I arrived. Drive another 15 minutes back. $60 later I have rubbery cold chicken and soggy fries because the girl at the window had an attitude. The food might have been decent when it was hot. But I guess I'll never know. I thought this was the "friendliest city in the south" So apparently the girl at the window might have been trying to "teach me a lesson" I complained to my parents about the crappy service. Explaining when I pulled in, there were people standing in the parking lot, no one at the pick up window so I walked straight up to it. Apparently, there is a secret code that only the locals know on how/where to stand to get efficient service. Had the girl at the window explained it to me, I could have complied....not been out $60 and not had to fix another meal because my family didn't want to eat crappy cold food that we didn't get to attempt to eat until almost an hour later. If you are heading to or from the beach, there are not a whole lot of options between Montgomery and the beach. And when you have two hungry 1 year olds, you can't have that long of a trip without stopping. We have stopped in Luverne before and found a nice restaurant. But since that place was closed for lunch and we wanted to try something different, the Chicken Shack is what popped up on our Yelp radar. When we first pulled up, we saw the to-go window and wondering if that was all this place did. But then we realized towards the back is where you enter to go into the dining room. It is the kind of place you walk in and find your own table and someone comes to take your order. The person working the register was very accommodating and brought us two high chairs because obviously our arms were full of kids. Our waitress was pretty quick to get our drink order and answer the questions we had about the menu. She was happy to do substitutions and even do a la cart since they didn't have a kids menu and we knew our two wouldn't eat a full portion. We went with chicken fingers with collard greens subbed in for the fries. The meal came with cole slaw and bread. We also got a couple of chicken fingers and fries for our kids. The chicken fingers were really good. Lightly breaded and very flavorful. It did take quite a bit of time to come out, but they were piping hot. The collards and slaw were pretty good. Not the best of either I have had. But very tasty none the less. The fries for the kids were crinkle cut and were obviously frozen. But I personally enjoy that. The service with exception of the kitchen being a little slow was outstanding. Our waitress was very attentive and kind. She even offered us to go drinks to which I decided while fumbling to get into the car to drive my thumb through the side of my styrofoam cup... and yes it is as ridiculous as it sounds. Let me start off by saying that your lunch options in Luverne, "Friendliest Town in the South" are pretty slim. If you need to stop in Laverne for gas, lunch, a tornado warning (or in my case all three), I wouldn't discourage you from eating here, but don't go outta your way, if you know what I'm sayin'. The food is southern fried, and the specialty is chicken (white meat costs extra). You also get three sides (collared greens, corn, etc) for a bargain price of $4.99. Everything is pretty gross except the chicken. If you get iced tea, it's coming sweet, they don't even ask, which I kind of like. The place is very depressing, no windows and no color. The waitresses are very sweet and friendly, and call you "darlin", which I also like. Unfortunately, most of the food is bad. On the bright side, you can get about 2,400 calories for five bucks. read more
