RoGallery is wonderful. We were moving from our uptown apartment where we were flush with wall space and moving to mid-town east coop where we had little. We decided to sell our modern art collection consisting of a Warhol, Lichtenstein, Philip Pearlstein, Rosenquist and many many others and didn't know what to do. Being in the communications business, I knew to research some of these artists I had to see how much their work was worth. And then I got lucky: I saw that someone else had sold the same highly collectable Lichtenstein print through Ro Gallery...but I had a lower number and it was in perfect condition. So I called! Robert was interested came to our apartment the very next day, assessed our collection, and selected the works he wanted. In fact, he chose many pieces when some of the artists were better known than others. He was generous. He immediately went to work first asking me what I wanted for each piece. So, I went to town tracking down previous prices and was prepared for an answer. And some of the pieces I knew nothing about so I had to leave it to him to research. Then, slowly, he put up a few pieces on his monthly auction. Some of the work took longer to sell than others...but he was consistent and worked hard at getting the job done. What a great guy! Rob is eminently honest, he's very well educated in what he does, he has an encyclopedic memory for artwork and is a real student of what he does. I've enjoyed my relationship with him and his staff and trust him completely. And, I just love the surprise checks that come in the mail after he makes a sale. Customer service and experience working with RoGallert was great until I received the signed print. The print had obviously imperfections not age related and age related. There response was you did not ask for pictures prior to shipping stuff luck. Make sure you ask before shipping to have pictures taken. Probably will not recommend or purchase from them again. I initially spoke with a young woman who was kind and helped schedule an appointment for 12:45 PM so I could review artwork for a homework assignment. When I called back to see if I could move the appointment to 1:00 PM, a man answered and immediately had a dismissive and irritated attitude. Although I said I was fine keeping my original 12:45 PM time, he continued to question me about whether I had looked at the artwork on the website and asked what school I attended, which felt unnecessary. I happened upon Ro Gallery as I was in the neighborhood and saw it was by appointment only, however the owner Robert Rogal let me in and he has quite a collection art works. I told him I'd like to sell a Marc Chagall print/offset which has a letter of Guarantee and Authenticity item in his auction and paid $50 to list the item as per their policy. Later I had to lower the price to make it sell. I saw listings of other similar Marc Chagall items in specialized lots but never saw my item promoted, and yet I paid $50. I would honestly say don't waste your time and money. He never promoted my item and when I sent an email to his underling Leonardo regarding this matter I never got an answer. I recently purchased a silkscreen via 1st Dibs and it was advertised and sent by RoGallery. It had 3 tear repairs, 5+ serious marks where paint was missing, a stapler mark and black ink spot on the side. It was not even close to what was represented or worth what we paid for it. This gallery appears to be of questionable integrity. They auctioned a 30,000-50,000 dollar painting with a single poor quality picture. When I requested more pictures they sent the original one instead of taking more and claimed it was difficult to get a good photo. When I asked if the painting had been damaged and if they could produce a letter of authenticity they did not reply. I am guessing they were trying to broker the picture without having possession. Be very cautious if you're considering doing business with this firm. read more

I was looking to get a custom frame done for a small art piece to give as a wedding gift. After an initial rude introductory over the phone I vaguely described what I was looking for. After two communications with the owner of the gallery, I have no choice but to alert others to what I believe would be considered dishonest advertising. Below is a summary: In 2006 I left an original piece of art, on consignment, with Ro Gallery. I picked up the art in June of 2006 after they were unsuccessful in finding a buyer. I have since moved to Canada and have the art in my possession. Recently I decided that I would try selling the art again, I went online to see what other originals by this artist were sold for. I was astonished to find my art on the "Live Auctioneer" website, as listed by Ro Gallery. The website indicates the art was "SOLD". In order to find the sale price I had to create an account, which I did. According to the site Ro Gallery sold the art on an unspecified date for $1,500 which is far below the actual value. I contacted Mr. Rogal on or about January 4, 2014 at which time we had a brief discussion. Mr. Rogal was extremely dismissive and kept telling me that "it didn't matter". It's unfortunate that Mr. Rogal doesn't understand the need to be honest in his representations. I quickly saw the conversation was going nowhere so I simply asked that he correct the error. On January 9, 2014 I followed up with an email, once again asking Mr. Rogal to correct the misrepresentation failing which I would contact the Better Business Bureau. Unfortunately Mr. Rogal has chosen not to respond so I filed the complaint, as promised. The art is a one of a kind Peter Max, it's a Sugar Ray Leonard collage that's signed by the artist as well as Sugar Ray. The picture on the "Live Auctioneer" website is mine, right down to the frame. What I found interesting is when I called and initially spoke to Mr. Rogal I was expecting a response such as "I'll have to look into it" or "that's not possible". Instead I was told, "it doesn't matter". Hmmmm.....it's almost like he's had these calls before. Hopefully Mr. Rogal will care about his gallery's reputation and correct the error. read more

I would advise to stay away from this gallery. The director is the rudest person I have ever talked to. I was inquiring about a piece, he said it belonged to his client, and I asked which number the print was in the edition and the provenance, and he said he would not contact his client unless I was going to buy it. I told him I needed to do my research before buying the $12k plus tax piece, so I wanted to know that information, but he was very very rude and just hang up on me. I am actually looking for that piece, so it was very dumb of him and very unprofessional. Deal with professional gallerists, not with this. I have never seen anyone so unprofessional and disrespectful in the art world. He was so rude it seemed I was speaking to someone that is a gangster in a movie. Surreal. read more

I have no ideas why the bad reviews. I saw a print on their web site which looked really nice. It was a simple black and white Kipniss Print. I emailed them with questions and purchased it though the internet. When I called to have it shipped the young lady who I spoke to sent me additional photos and couldn't have been nicer. She told me how beautiful it was, especially the frame, which I had never seen. The print arrived at my home and packed the best way that I have EVER seen things packed. I would go back again and will go there to take a look at what else they have. read more

This place is amazing, a hidden gem in NYC. I've been to many galleries and never have seen the variety that RoGallery has under one roof. The owner Robert and his staff could not have been more helpful and friendly. This is not your traditional art gallery, but more like a warehouse filled with art treasures. If you're a serious art collector and find yourself in Long Island City, it would serve you well to make an appointment and view some serious art. A Schott Brother motorcycle jacket painted by Keith Haring just casually hanging inside the warehouse was incredible. In collaboration with RoGalerie for a work of art sent to Switzerland which was mishandled by customs officers in Switzerland. He did not know how to manipulate works of art. With my approach with the carrier and the RoGallery we were able to find a solution that satisfied me the buyer and the RoGallery. I am sorry for the gallery owner for his work of art damaging by the Swiss customs. You must change for Switzerland, for the importation of art with other carriers, I have never had a problem concerning damaged works. Thanks to the Rogalerie for its collaboration. read more

My problem wasn't with customer service, but rather their failure to stand behind an item they sold. I purchased a piece of art through their auction and when it arrived it had damage that the pictures did not reveal and the description did not note. I phoned to ask about options, but was told that I didn't have any. Essentially, they do not guarantee what they sell at auction. It's a buyer beware situation. I've used many auction sites, including eBay, Heritage, RR, and so on. This is the first time an auction house has refused to stand behind their product. It's pretty disappointing, because the damage with this piece is significant and now I'm stuck with it. They offered to sell it again for me, but I don't feel comfortable duping someone else into it while Ro collects a second buyers premium. I won't be working with them again. There are better auction sites that actually take care of their customers and protect you from things like this. I'd suggest you avoid Ro unless you see something in person and thoroughly inspect it. For my part, this was a $400 lesson. read more
