In late 2023, we moved to the Rogue Valley Manor (RVM), a licensed Continuing Care Community with wide views, lush plantings and abundant trees. We enjoyed meeting the other residents. However, after 22 months, we left feeling angry, frustrated and hurt. A few months after our arrival, RVM implemented a "points" system for meals, and we experienced months of confusion regard when, where and how to eat. Rules changed daily and communication was spotty. Management made some questionable decisions at this time of massive changes. They fired the Food Service Manager, slashed dining staff hours and permanently shuttered one dining room. The implementation of the points program generated about 40 pages of single-spaced complaints from residents. During this time of unrest, one senior manager remarked, "If residents cannot handle moving to the points program, they should seek professional counseling." We chose to eat 90% of our meals at home but we ran into problems there, as well. That summer, we discovered that our cottage was too hot for us and too hot for the housekeepers, who refused to clean in our heat. We learned that management had ignored a neighbor with the same issue during the prior summer. We worked with that neighbor to document our cooling problems and sent a report to the managers involved. Eventually, with the assistance of the Resident Council President, we received extra insulation and were told, "You will have to pay for any future upgrades to your cottage." Our neighbor waited four more months for the same insulation without a confirmation it was coming. The next summer, we found that the new insulation was not enough to resolve our cooling problem. We submitted another work order but heard from no one until a few days before we left. Our experience suggested problems with basic management. Our tipping point was when I personally experienced unprofessional treatment by staff, including managers--pettiness and hostility--while working on two different projects. RVM says it is "resident-centered" but based on our above experiences, I disagree. One contributing factor may be that CCRC management and resident council leaders do not seem to be aware of Oregon's CCRC Resident Rights laws (ORS 101.115) for independent-living residents. Copies are not given to new residents nor are the Resident Rights referenced in meetings. Resident Rights should be given to all residents and for incoming residents, Resident Rights should be signed off by both parties. Surprisingly, Resident Council leadership told me they were not interested in Resident Rights (the very rights that ensured their roles as advocates for residents). One important Resident Right--residents receiving timely answers to their concerns--was of most concern. One manager told me, "I never read 'those letters' from residents." In conclusion, we did not want to live there for the rest of our lives. It was an expensive mistake. read more

Many improvements have been made here over the last year or so. Now things are going downhill. Until the covid pandemic, dinner and lunch were served in the Skyline Plaza dining room afterwards dinner was resumed 5 days/week but lunch was discontinued. After months of lobbying residents got the administration to offer cold deli items and hot soup for lunch. Plaza and cottage residents no longer had to travel to the Manor (an 8/10 mile round trip from the Plaza) for lunch. As of May 27, 2024, the deli items are available only by ordering in advance giving a pickup time and receiving lunch in a paper bag. On the plus side we were told dinner will be served in the Plaza seven days/week. In the interests of harmony and (supposedly) maintaining non-profit status the administration has banned discussions of controversial topics (such as climate change, religion and elections) publicly on campus. It even resisted the distribution of the County Clerk voter pamphlets to those who hadn't received one in the mail. read more

I've lived at Rogue Valley Manor for over five years. Like most folks who move here, we and the rest of our family felt that we were too young to make the move. Boy, were we wrong. Now we have the time to do all of the things that we want and don't have to be concerned about what we will have for dinner, maintaining our front garden, changing a lightbulb, or wondering about our house when we travel. There are groups and activities to participate in if that's what makes you happy or you can spend your time not doing anything if that's what retirement looks like for you. Believe me, this is not your average retirement community. There are folks from 62 to 104 and some of the centenarians are very active as well. We've made and developed so many friendships here and we really can't imagine living anywhere else. Most of all we know that if the time comes when we can't live independently, continuing care is available right here on our campus. It was a good choice for us...no, it was a great choice. read more

I have been a resident of the Rogue Valley Manor for the past six years. RVM, located in Medford, Oregon, is either the largest of one of the largest CCRCs (Continuing Care Retirement Community) in the western US. While residents have come from many venues (over 100 from Hawaii alone), we moved from just miles away in Ashland, Oregon. Given that the move to a retirement community is quite likely the last one you'll ever do, it is not a decision to make lightly. We did our research and determined that this close-to-home location was perfect for us. It exhibits Pacific Northwest scenery and sensibilities, California weather, and world-class theater in Ashland. Over the past six years, we have made dozens of good friends and hundreds of pleasant acquaintances. We were nurtured through the pandemic with doorstep dining deliveries. And with 27 holes of golf on our square mile property, I'm better leaving my seventies than I was entering them. The Administration at RVM not only listens to residents, we are engaged as partners in evolving new resources and activities around our campus. Our resident organization oversees well over 100 distinct clubs, sports, games, and hobbies - and is always ready to add more. This works well because residents like my wife and myself, are anxious to volunteer and serve others. I'd love to give more than five stars. read more

I moved here 2 1/2 years ago after the death of my spouse and wasn't sure how I would move forward alone. But Rogue Valley Manor staff and residents are so friendly and warm and supportive that it was easy to jump in to this community and become part of it. There are so many activities to help you stay young, connected, and active - even with quite a few activities within the external community. With three completely different types of dining plus takeout services, you never get bored with your meal experience. The only question is, who do you want to dine with tonight? Each activity is an experience either as a solo or with a gang. The views of the valley make spectacular sunrises and sunsets, and my favorite quirky part of the evening is when I go to the park in front of the manor to watch the turkeys fly into the trees to sleep for the night. Even my dog loves to meet up with new friends at the dog park here.. I gave up a historic home in a tourist town and you would think that kind of lifestyle change would be difficult. My husband and I, former residents of California, joined this CCRC community in Southern Oregon a year ago. We were looking for a less stressful living situation for this stage of life. We were in our 70's and remained healthy and active. The beauty of the 600 plus acre campus and the 900 hundred residents offers a breadth of activities, housing options and facilities unequaled in similar places. The surrounding area offers a multitude of outdoor activities, wineries and cultural offerings including the world famous Oregon Shakespeare Festival in nearby Ashland. What has really surpassed our expectations however has been the value of community itself. The residents are fascinating individuals, very welcoming to newcomers, who are living with zest and joy. We are so glad we made the move! read more

Friends of ours have moved into Rogue Valley Manor and we visited them in their cottage this evening. There are several levels of care available, from apartments in the high rise building to the "cottage" homes to the memory care facility that is nearing completion. Their cottage is attractive and well designed. It has a stunning view, although the views today were obscured by smoke that's blanketing the valley from the wildfires. They took us to dinner at one of the three dining rooms the Manor offers. They had reserved a table for the four of us. Food was served buffet style and it was very good. We each took a plate and could pick and choose what we wanted. The mains tonight were mushroom ravioli, roast beef and roast chicken. I took two ravioli, a slice of rare roast beef and a chicken thigh, along w/ fresh corn on the cob and salad and vegetables. Everything was well prepared and delicious. Service was mixed, one seemed a bit surly and grudging while the others were helpful and friendly. I had three glasses of iced tea and appreciated that one of the sweetener choices was stevia. Multiple desserts are available; I had creme brulee. After dinner our friends took us on a tour of the high rise facility, showing us the swimming pool and lawn bowling greens, indoors and outdoors. In the auditorium a pianist from the Britt Festival was performing. The auditorium was full and an overflow crowd watched on the TV monitor in the adjacent area, seated on chairs and couches. The artwork on the walls is very attractive, paintings and photographs. The Manor owns two golf courses, one close to the Manor itself, the other, Centennial, where we've been w/ our friends Sue and Bill several times, a little further away. Over all I would say it's an impressive facility. read more

My grandparents, 90 and 93, have lived here for 16 years... They have enjoyed every moment here in their cottage. It's a spacious two bedroom two handicap accessible bathrooms one story home. They have a full kitchen, dining room, and living room. A one car garage and an adorable patio out back with an incredible view. The Manor is attentive and supportive for the geriatric community here. We enjoyed a sit down dinner on Saturday evening and our waiter was attentive and very pleasant. I was NOT a fan of Sunday Brunch... It's a buffet style meal and very "cruise ship-esqe" but they are feeding hundreds of people so that's unfortunately expected.
