When I was in a state of anxiety and trying to see as many doctors as possible to get different opinions, I found Dr. Melikian at DISC. I had generally good experiences with doctors I had seen there in the past. He is more of a spine specialist, focusing on the neck and back. When I came in, I was having issues with both my neck and shoulders. After looking at my neck X-rays and MRIs, he noted that my shoulders were likely the bigger issue at the time. I could move my neck up and down without too much trouble, but my shoulders had difficulty rotating. Despite that, he was able to refer me to another DISC doctor, Dr. Shore. More importantly, I never felt like I was being rushed out the door, unlike many doctors who seem to just want to get patients in and out for a paycheck. In fact, toward the end of my appointment, he made sure I did not have any more questions before we parted. To me, that is a sign of a doctor who actually cares, which feels surprisingly rare given the number of doctors I have seen over the last several years. While he was great, I also have to give a special shoutout to his assistant, Joanna. She might be one of the best doctor's assistants I have seen. The assistants I have known generally get a good idea of what is going on and log your symptoms so the doctor can look at you more efficiently, but Joanna went above and beyond. She did more than a typical assistant would by checking the multiple issues I was having, including rotator tests, hand-grip strength, shoulder rotation, and various sensitive points. Similar to Dr. Melikian, I felt like she genuinely cared about what was going on and wanted to make sure I was receiving the right treatment. She was the first person to make me realize that I needed to focus more on my shoulder. Of course, she still told the doctor about everything just in case, but it says something when an assistant does more thorough checks than some actual MDs I have seen. It also says something that, even though I did not receive treatment from Dr. Melikian and he ultimately referred me elsewhere, he was one of the few doctors who was very assertive about making sure I scheduled a follow-up appointment. Even when I was in a rush to leave, his assistant reached out and emailed me to schedule an appointment, making sure I was okay with it. That is the sign of a doctor who really cares. Overall, in a weird way, I am kind of sad that my issues were not more related to my neck, since both Dr. Melikian and his assistant, Joanna, were great. Based on the reviews I have seen on Yelp and Google, many people seem to have had similarly positive experiences. If your issues are more related to your neck or back, I would consider getting an opinion from Dr. Melikian. read more

I had an artificial disk replacement with Dr. Melikian on my L5-S1 back in September. Compared to the other surgeons I met it seemed to me that he was clearly the most knowledgeable and it was nice to talk to someone that had a clear solution for me that didn't involve fusion. I've had two appointments with Dr. Melikian for two separate issue: the first was for lower back pain, the second for a cervical issue. At my first appointment on my lumbar problem over a year ago, Dr.Melikian asked me if I could touch my toes. When I demonstrated that I could he sent me home. My second cervical problem started over a month ago and I immediately made an appointment with Dr. Melikian. At this appointment he provided me with two hard-copy orders: one for a nerve conductivity test and another for a cervical MRI requesting that copies of the film be sent to his Marina del Rey office, which I did as soon as I received them. When I called the office to determine if the films had been received, an office representative informed me that Dr. Melikian could no longer accept my Blue Shield insurance due to my enrollment in Medicare. This was never an issue in my previous office visits and when I inquired about it the rep told me that I had to pay in cash in all future visits and procedures. So, if anyone reading this is contemplating using Dr. Melikian's medical services......be forewarned if you're on Medicare. read more

I came to see him after suffering for years with incredible neck pain. Over the years, my pain and symptoms became increasingly worse. I found it difficult to enjoy the things I liked to do... hiking, traveling, dancing, and simply going out with friends. I also had a very difficult time sleeping because of the pain. I can honestly say that Dr. Melikian is the most kind and professional doctor I've had the pleasure to meet. I have had terrible lower back pain for two years and have seen a number of doctors. L4-L5, and stenosis. I hurt my lumbar spine on a skydive landing. I have been doing action sports for years and it finally caught up to me. I was referred to Dr. Melikian through my chiropractor, Dr. Dadivas over at Newport Beach Wellness. Dr. Melikian's assistant got me scheduled right away, and set me up to get X-rays before my appointment. They couldn't have made it any easier!! Both offices, his and the X-ray's, were no problem to find (within walking distance of each other). I ended up with 3 bulging discs, 1 being torn, and a chipped L4 vertebrae. Once I found out how serious it was, I was devastated. It definitely could've been worse though. Dr Melikian educated me on what I should and shouldn't do in order to heal. I'm really thankful to have found Dr. Melikian! After suffering from some truly debilitating back pain and trying physical therapy for many months, I found out that I had a massive herniation that left me stuck in bed for weeks. The first surgeon I consulted with seemed capable, but I really felt like I wanted to find the best person for the job. (A microdiscectomy is less invasive, but it's still back surgery!) I started checking reviews and came across Dr. Melikian and saw reviews from his patients who had gotten the same surgery in the same location (L5S1) and I knew I wanted a consultation with him. I was able to get an appointment and he was very patient and always made sure to answer any questions I had. He is not the kind of doctor who pushes you out before you have time to process what's going on. I got all of my questions answered and my surgery scheduled. (His office staff were excellent and I felt comfortable with them and trusted they would do what they said as well. Mandy is the best!) So, unfortunately, I have been a spine surgery patient 4 times now. My last surgery being about 10 days ago. My prior 3 surgeries were (L4/L5 S1 Laminectomy & Discectomy) with a very renowned surgeon in Newport Beach by Fasion Island beginning at the age of 18. At the beginning of May, I began having pain in my hip. About every 3 days that pain would increase by 20%. By the 3rd week I had nerve pain which I was very familiar with having prior surgeries and knew I had a problem. I called my surgeon and wasn't able to get an appointment for 2 months out. I was in so much pain and wasn't sure what to do. My husband insisted I find another surgeon at least so I could be seen, maybe get an XRay and see what was going on. I found Dr. Melikian on Yelp actually and called and made an appointment to meet with him. I was able to get an appointment with him in less than a week. When I called, I was asked to come 30 minutes earlier to get an XRay done at the imaging center that is literally across the parking lot from Dr. Melikian's office. Mandy (Dr. Melikian's assistant) scheduled the XRay appointment for me and just told me to be there 30 minutes prior and once finished, to simply walk across the parking lot to meet with Dr. Melikian. When I met with Dr. Melikian, the Xray photos were sent electronically to him and he was able to read the XRays for me at my first visit with him. Meeting with Dr. Melikian the first time he was very humble, attentive and listened to what my symptoms were and my previous spine surgery history. I never felt rushed or like another number, he was genuine, sincere and listened to everything I had to say and concerns that I had. After reading my XRay, we knew there was a problem, but the next step would be to do an MRI to be more exact of what and where the problem was. This is always common, xray first, then MRI, then plan of action, which for me, has always been surgery.... so I wasn't expecting anything less. I scheduled another appointment for the MRI and next visit with Dr. Melikian and again, Mandy scheduled my appointment with the Dr. as well as my appointment for the MRI with the imaging center. My appointment was now scheduled for 5 days later. Within those 5 days, my nerve pain increased greatly. I was barely able to walk and I was now getting shooting nerve pain which was debilitating and I was walking hunched over and very slowly. It was a Friday night around 6pm and I called Mandy (thinking I would get her voicemail being that it was after office hours) in hopes of asking if I could get a prescription for pain meds. To my surprise, Mandy answered. I was completely caught off guard because I wasn't expecting her to answer. I explained why I was calling and she immediately said she would get in touch with the doctor and call or text me back. She texted me back about an hour later to let me know that the dr had called in my prescription to my pharmacy. I went the next day to pick up my prescription and my pharmacy notified me that they were completely out of the medication. They were unable to forward my prescription and needed my dr to call another pharmacy to fullfill my order. I texted Mandy again - on a Saturday morning at 9:30am and she quickly responded with "Not a problem, I will have the dr call the other pharmacy and get it filled." I have never had any doctors office answer the phone after hours let alone on a Friday and Saturday and have their phones forwarded to their personal cell phone!! AMAZING service!! And Mandy never acted as if she were annoyed with me - she was always super sweet, very helpful and very quick to respond. After my MRI appointment, Dr. Melikian went over my MRI with me and he informed me that it wasn't the L5/L4 disc we were thinking was the issue but rather a new disc that I had never had issues with and it was now L3. He then went over my options of how I wanted to proceed. He told me we could try injections, PT, Chiropractic care or surgery. I knew surgery was my only option and we were able to schedule for 6 days later. I was scheduled for L3/L4 microdiscectomy surgery. My surgery took a little over an hour. I arrived to the facility at 8:15am and was discharged at 3:30pm. The staff at the surgical center were incredible and so attentive. I woke up after surgery with ZERO pain. It's now been 10 days since surgery and I have already had my post op with Dr. Melikian. I am healing well with no pain and very little discomfort from the incision. I cannot speak more highly of Dr. Melikian or his staff and simply hope that my review may have helped someone to at least meet with him if you are having back pain. He is amazing and honestly, a master at his craft. I am forever grateful to this man and if I happen to need surgery #5, he will be the first person I call. Being an avid cyclist I have had problems with my lower back for several years. I have seen numerous doctors in pursuit of correcting my lower back pain. Treatment has ranged from PT to injections, pain medication and radiofrequency nerve ablation. All treatments were only temporary in relief. I had severe neck pain. I had limited range of motion. My neck was locked to the left. I asked about a bone in my X-ray where I felt all my pain was radiating from. He said it was a normal X-ray and it was just a normal joint. Turns out it wasn't a normal joint. It was a cervical rib. And two months later my pain was 10x worse my arm started turning blue. Dr. Melikian is absolutely the best Dr. I've ever had. For 20 years due to lower back injury, I suffered from daily and nightly pain. Before I went to Dr. Melikian I hadn't slept more than 4 hours at a time. I had heard stories about people and their lower back surgeries and was willing to try to tough it out. Once my pain at L3, L4 had to be addressed I googled, Best lower back surgeon." Well, Dr. Melikian was my man. He not only gave me all my opinions, he never pressured me either way. We decided that surgery was the best option. His calm demeanor and professionalism gave me all the confidence I needed. He used the LTIF procedure which is an awesome lateral approach to replace my ruptured disc. I was up and walking an hour later. I spent 23 hours at DISC surgery center which was like staying at the Hilton. I am 57 years old and my back has never felt better! I just had a very successful disc replacement surgery from Dr. Melikian at the DISC Surgery Center at Newport Beach. Both Dr. Melikian and the experience at DISC were superb. I had suffered with cervical nerve-related issues on my right side for about 18 months (including about a year of PT before finding Dr. Melikian). I researched doctors in Orange County and thought that Dr. Melikian was the best, based on patient outcomes I researched. My primary care physician also told me that about 3 of his patients had seen Dr. Melikian and they were super pleased. He was very thorough and methodical in my treatment. We went through about 5 months of conservative treatments (injections) to avoid surgery but the symptoms were getting worse. I'm now less than 3 weeks post-surgery (prosthetic replacement of C5-6, C6-7) and I am up doing pretty normal days (with light activities). I can't say enough about Dr. Melikian. I was referred to Dr Melikian by Beach Cities Orthopedics in Torrance due to my excruciating nerve pain in my shoulders and left arm. I was on heavy pain meds along with cortisone shots and they were not helping. My ortho recommended I see Dr Melikian due to the extreme pain. It turns out I had two badly herniated discs in my neck that needed to be replaced. Within two weeks I was in the surgery room. I honestly don't know where to begin...first, everyone in the office is kind, friendly, and COMPETENT. I feel need to say this, because it isn't the norm anymore. They actually answer the phone, which, for some reason, is novel these days. They are efficient and get you what you need immediately. Need a prescription? It's at the pharmacy before I get home. Need an X-Ray or MRI? Cool, they will make the appointment for you at the place that is literally right across the street, and line it up so you can knock it out and then walk across to your appointment with your images in hand. I have never had to wait. Like...at all. Even when I am really early (because the imaging was so fast, and I didn't have to wait there, either. Even when early). Need some pain management? How about an in-office doctor for that? No worries, we will schedule all of it for you, so it all lines up, ZERO waiting, and then....Dr. Melikian. He has got to have the best bedside manor around. He has a great sense of humor, takes his time with you, listens, offers treatment options, and also considers your own ideas and thoughts without condescension. But most importantly, he so very clearly is an expert in his field and knows his stuff. On my first visit, years ago, he decided to treat me on the spot with some injections but had to run out to get the medication, which they don't keep in the office. Literally, at that moment, he did so. I HAVE NEVER, EVER, EVER RECEIVED THIS LEVEL OF CARE. Dr. Babaria, the pain management specialist/sports medicine physician in his office, is equally impressive, for all the same reasons. They are both caring, considerate, and knowledgeable. OH, and it didn't take SIX MONTHS to get an appointment. Dr. Melikian treated me years ago, but I moved, so I tried to find a doctor closer to me when my neck was having issues again. Two doctors never called me back after I left multiple voicemails, and the other had an appointment available several months away. When you are in severe pain, that's not going to work. I remembered how much I had liked Dr. Melikian, so I called and made an appointment for the following week. THE FOLLOWING WEEK. It has been PURE JOY ever since. I AM SO HAPPY to make the drive. OH, AND...while I was making a followup appt, Dr. Melikian was right next to me when he received a call on his cell...from a patient...which he answered immediately...and he handled that patient with such care. I honestly don't know what's happening over there, but boy--my life would be infinitely better if every doctor and every doctor's office worked this way. After the initial consultation, I felt good about moving forward with my microdiscectomy procedure. Not only did the Dr. take his time to hear every single one of my concerns but he talked to me like a human and not as a patient he just wanted to operate on. Initially, the surgery was scheduled for a month out but due to my pain level, Dr. Melikian pushed my surgery up to ASAP. From there, his entire team went out of their way to get my pre-ops done on time which was a lot of extra work on their end that they did not have to do. I had a lumbar microdiscectomy from Dr. Melikian about a month ago after a half a year of pain and a bad experience with a questionable doc and my experience with Dr. Melikian was absolutely wonderful. Both he and his staff are extremely compassionate and check in regularly, he was honest from the get-go, and my surgery went perfect. Honestly, I've barely felt any pain recovering from my surgery at all. I'm naturally a nervous person and they did a great job of explaining all the risks and keeping me calm. I've always been able to reach him within the day if I have questions, and his assistant Mandy has been on top of absolutely everything. I don't even know where to begin. Dr Melikian is hands down the best in his profession. I had a work injury and was trying to be seen everywhere. All the big names and practices in Orange County did not even return my calls after multiple attempts. A friend of mine referred me to Dr. Melikian, and that is the best thing that ever happened to me. Somehow, I got his direct cell phone number. Not only did he take my call and the time to listen to me, he ensured his assistant would follow up and get me taken care of. His assistant, Cecilia, is a necessary pitbull in dealing with workers comp. She was extremely professional and courteous while keeping pressure and persistence on the adjuster to expedite my treatment. I finally got seen by Dr. Melikian, and his newport beach office was spectacular. Very impressive office, with countless pictures of world class athletes that have been treated by him. Take the time, as I did, to read his bio and see how impressive his resume is. I was seen immediately, upon every visit and never waited like you would elsewhere. Once we finally met in person, he took the time to understand my injury, my concerns, and gave a list of options on how to proceed. He will treat you as aggressive or non invasive as you would like and explain the pros and cons of each. His bedside manner and attention to detail is impeccable. I was able to schedule an X-Ray and MRI in the same complex with immediate results available to the Dr Melikian. Upon every follow up visit, Dr. Melikian not only remembered me, despite my face mask, he noticed how my progress was improving, He legitimately cares for his patients and wants what is best for them. This is a rarity these days. I could not be more impressed or happy with Dr. Melikian, his staff, his facility, and everything about his practice. I had confided with my coworker that my first back doctor wanted to fuse my spine. My coworker recommended that I get a second opinion and referred me to Dr. Melikian and I'm sure glad he did. After an initial consultation, Dr. Melikian reviewed my medical history, xrays, and MRI and determined a microdecompression surgery was a viable option. This surgery was less envasive than a spinal fusion and could solve my issue of sciatica pain. I elected to go forward with the microdecompression surgery. Dr. Melikian & his staff were polite & professional throughout the whole process. I walked out of the surgical center the same day and went home. My surgery was only a week ago and I am off all pain medication and can already feel some of the issues I had are getting better. I am walking daily, driving my car and on the road to recovery.
