I'm also about 35+ years younger than the average hip replacement patient, so I had a lot of questions and concerns. As of today7/27/26, Dr. Gorab has replaced both of my hips within 2 years time. They were thorough, detailed, kind, and provided a Get Well Loop portal with checklists and check-ins leading up to and post-surgery for easy daily check-ins. With Hoag Medical Group, the surgery was at the main Hoag Orthopedic Institute hospital on Sand Canyon and I felt well monitored and cared for through the entire process. The nurses were great!! Attempted to make an appointment with a physician I had seen in the past and he was unavailable. Dr Michael Eng was referred to instead. As a medical professional of 28 years, I understand the difference in personality and opinions that doctors can have. Dr Eng was positively awful. He was cocky, arrogant and condescending. He made little eye contact, was defensive and his bedside manner was non existent. His unprofessionalism in critiquing his colleague was beyond off putting. He lacked compassion and the ability to listen and understand. I fully understand that doctors have different personalities, opinions and styles, but I am so unsettled by him. It was a waste of the copay. I am just shocked that Hoag would employ a person of this demeanor . This is a time where I wished AI would have scribed the visit. I would love for a colleague to review. He appears very inexperienced and green in medicine. It will take a lot to make him a successful physician. UPDATE( 2 weeks later)...no follow up from office manager when requested. I guess this is just standard practice there. Wow, what an amazing experience! If you or a loved one needs joint replacement surgery, I cannot recommend this place enough. My wife recently underwent a long-awaited total hip replacement with Dr. Nassif, and the care we received was exceptional. Even arriving at 5:00 AM, we were met with so much joy and warmth from the registration and pre-op teams. My wife had a phenomenal recovery nurse named Cathy, who made a wonderful impression right out of surgery. Once she was moved to her room, a young man named Jose, who clearly has so much potential went above and beyond to make us feel safe, welcomed, and reassured while waiting for a new team to arrive to my wife's room. What an amazing orthopedic area at Hoag Hospital. Check-in was a breeze. There was some hospital construction going on but the orthopedic wing looked brand new! Dr. Michael Hunter was the surgeon who replaced my hip and his team is phenomenal! He had previously replaced one of my knees. The Hoag nurses who worked the day of my hip surgery went way above board to make me feel comfortable and less anxious about the surgery and post-op!! Dr. Hunter's follow-up care is very thorough and you feel that he and his team, including his PA Madison Graham care about their patients well-being! FYi Hoag has a new facility in San Clemente and Doctor Hunter has office hours in San Clemente. If you live in south OC you now have another option besides Irvine! read more

First the hospital itself is more like a high-end hotel as you walk into the orthopedic center. Everything from the security, valet and greeters were top notch. Their level of consideration, communication and genuine caring about you is very impressive. From pre-op to post-op service and care was great. The overall surgical procedure went very well and staying overnight was much better than I expected. The nursing and PT teams were great and again was really surprised by the level of staffing care provided. Thank you very much. On Oct.10, I called Hoag Orthopedic Institute located at 16300 Sand Canyon, #511 at phone number 949-727-5010. My back was in great pain needed to see a doctor asap. A lady answered call, saying that she was Hoag Orthopedic Institute. She asked my name, phone, insurance information, saying that if I didn't provide those information, she could not schedule me. After I provided all information, she told me that I have to go to a different location to see a nurse assistant first by the name Josh 6 days later, next Thursday. I told her my back was really painful needed to see a doctor right now. She told me without seeing that nurse assistant first, I can not see any doctor in 16300 Sand Canyon office. I tried dial back Sand Canyon office phone number three times, I always being routed to this Hoag call center. This actually confirmed my recent experience with another Hoag medical center, they also forced me to see nurse first now. Few years ago, I took my neighbor to that Hoag Orthopedic Institute located at 16300 Sand Canyon office before, it was not like this. just had a total upper spine reconstruction by Dr Lee. it consisted of two separate surgeries. I was in the hospital care for seven days. I've been out for three weeks now and all I can say is the entire episode has been wonderful. These people are great for the staff to the himself excellent excellent care couldn't have asked for a better place to have this done. I called two times to make an appointment for my husband who has UHC PPO and a secondary insurance. We go to many doctors since his stroke that only take the UHC PPO. On both my calls to schedule the appointment with Dr. Gordan, I stated both insurances. When I took off work to take my husband, the large rude girl at the front office was stating that they will not see us since they do not accept the secondary insurance and was saying it loud enough for the entire waiting room to hear. She went and made a call to her office manager and said we cannot see you because we do not accept the secondary insurance. Why does every other doctor who does not accept the secondary just bill the primary insurance with no issues????? We have seen multiple doctors since his stroke 8 months ago with only the primary insurance and have never heard of this before. I'm calling BS on this one and would not recommend this practice since they were well aware of both insurances on two separate phone calls and wasted my day off on this. Just researched this and found that they need to bill the secondary and then once that is denied, they can bill me which was fine with me. They just do not want to take the extra step which should have been relayed on my first two calls. Extremely rude front desk girl.....How these doctors allow their front office to behave this way is beyond me. read more

I had a total knee replacement done by Dr. Steven Barnett..excellent experience and great outcome. Next was a total shoulder replacement by Dr. Daniel Debottis..again superb experience and outcome. Followed by cervical spine surgery with Dr. Jeremy Smith, phenomenal experience and outcome once again. What a relief to have surgeons and anesthesiologists who honestly listen and work with you for a seamless experience. The office is so efficient, seen timely,and very good communication. I had back surgery in 2024 performed by Dr. Jason Liauw with the Hoag Orthopedic Institute. He came highly recommended by friends and my previous back specialist, Dr. Sylvain Palmer. The first surgery was completed in March of 2024, but complications from this surgery required a second surgery in April, due to extensive nerve pain. The back surgery was successful, but left me with no feeling in my left ankle and foot, which I am living with to this day. The care I received in the hospital was amazing, but unfortunately I traded back issues for permanent left foot issues. Dr. Liauw's PA was not helpful and charged me for calling them to follow up with the lingering left leg issues. She claimed I had the left leg issue prior to the surgery, which was documented and false. I have since relocated to North Carolina and have contacted orthopedic professionals here to help me resolve the issues. If I could change things I would not do this surgery again. read more

When I needed a knee replacement I was looking for an excellent surgeon with a good staff to be considerate of the patients. I found a great surgeon but with waiting too long whenever I went for my appointments, I decided not to go with him. I chose another good surgeon with Hoag Orthopedic whom checked out my requirements and I was really impressed with the staff to be so punctual, detail oriented and ready to listen to you . I believed I was in good hands. This was all great until I did my surgery. Ever since I have been trying to get in contact with the staff to address my concerns and answer my questions, NO REPLY. It's amazing, I have left messages for three days in a row, to please get back to me and answer my concerns. NO BODY EVER CALLED ME BACK. It is more than 10 days and no contact so I gave up. I am wondering what is going on with the staff and management? How can they be so blunt and inefficient. It's like they just want to get you in and when you are hooked, nothing else matters. This is a bad reflection on the Drs. as well. I will write his review after I see the results of the operation. So far I would not recommend them to any friends and family. What a pity. read more

Warning: if you are seeking treatment from this practice, be sure to select a doctor other than Michael Hunter where you may actually have an opportunity to be treated with consideration and respect. My advice is particularly directed to women - I don't say this lightly. We have lived here since 2003. I have consistently remarked on how fortunate we are to live in an area with easy access to proficient medical care. I was referred to this office by my considerate longtime General Physician with Newport Family Medicine due to a situation that has developed over the past 18 months of ever-present pain in my left hip caused by bursitis. I have been attending Physical Therapy with Rausch PT in Laguna Niguel - excellent - and also received highly professional acupuncture treatment with Dr. Julie Reyes in Lake Forest. Because the pain and tenderness are ever-present, it has not been possible for me to sleep through the night. In addition, it is uncomfortable to sit or drive for long periods of time. It is not my nature to seek out pain pills, sleeping pills or take ibuprofen regularly. When I believed I had reasonably exhausted other available options, yet still had pain, my doctor and I discussed a cortisone shot to ease the inflammation and referred me to Hoag Ortho Institute in Irvine to specifically see Dr. James Caillouette. Mid-November, I contacted the Irvine office to schedule the appointment. They informed that Dr. Caillouette was retiring and not seeing new patients. They told me Dr. Michael Hunter's schedule was the most readily available for appointments - I could see him right away. I was surprised to learn that this Dr. wasn't booked out for appointments. It has been my usual experience that it takes 3 months or longer to get an appointment as a new patient. This was the first red flag. We scheduled the appointment for Weds, 11/30/22, early afternoon. When I arrived, the front desk personnel acted exhausted, overworked and under-appreciated. Two were gossiping animated while I waited with others to be acknowledged as arrivals. In the treatment room, after a while, Michael Hunter entered. He addressed me by stating his name and immediately asked what my profession was. I looked at him confused. He retorted: are you some kind of boss-lady or CEO-type? And chuckled. What was that about? It felt like Dr. Hunter was introducing his character as someone who holds disdain for women who work outside the home. Or perhaps for any woman. When we discussed the reason why I was in the office for treatment, I clarified that it was on referral from my doctor for bursitis of the hip. He retorted: is that your diagnosis or your doctor's? I am holding a referral from my doctor, why ask if I was in the office as a result of my own diagnosis. Again a slight against women. He asked me if I had undergone hip x-rays. I directed him to review them through the Hoag system. Upon his review, he commented that I had bi-lateral x-rays and asked me why images were taken of both hips. I responded that this is what my doctor had ordered. What else. He had his backed turned to me for a while in silence. Then he asked me how long I have had hip pain. I responded close to 18 months - at this time I cannot sleep through the night and have difficulty sitting and driving. He retorted that he felt I just needed to attend Physical Therapy. No need for a cortisone shot. I informed I had been attending PT regularly for months. In consultation with my doctor, we agreed that it was time to try cortisone as a 'one and done' deal. He asked how many cortisone shots I have had. Never before - ever. He asked me to list exercises I was doing at PT. I listed them. I felt this wasn't going to work out and asked whether I should just seek another referral. In fact, I wish I had collected my things and left. At least at that point, I would have the opportunity to receive considerate and professional care. An assistant supplied paper shorts to me to change into. Hunter admonished me for not being able to promptly pinpoint the specific area that was the root of my pain. He noticed a bruise at the top of my left thigh, looked at me and asked: Do you drink a lot and fall down? Wait - what?! I was shocked, shook my head 'no' and uttered - no, no, no, no, no, no...nothing of the sort. I got sweaty and my legs felt wobbly. How unprofessional and unethical. I wish I had collected my things and left, even in paper shorts. The Assistant had patiently reviewed the process with me, where I understood Novocain would be administered before the shot. When Dr. Hunter treated me, NO Novocain was administered. The shot was incredibly painful - I winced, whimpered and slightly jerked in pain. He told me to stay still and breathe. When I stood after wincing, he said - you're okay, right? Overall, Michael Hunter wanted me to feel emotional, mental and physical discomfort during this experience. He succeeded. read more

Although I am very satisfied with the care I received from my orthopedist and his team for my surgery, the wait time for routine appointments needs improvement. I understand that things happen but waiting 50-60mins over your scheduled appointment is not ok. If we say we cannot wait longer we are told we will be charged a fee of $50 as a missed appointment when we did I in fact show up on time. That type of response doesn't align with the level of patient care service that I have come to expect from Hoag. Reaching out to the patient and letting them know your office is running behind and offering the patient the option to come in later could help these situations. read more

Hoag Orthopedic Institute - Knee Surgery. - Orthopedists Near Me - Irvine, California

Let me preface by saying that I've never had any sort of major surgery before so I don't have any other experiences to compare with HOI. Having said that, other than two minor negatives, my experience with HOI well exceeded my expectations. First of all, the HOI facilities are modern, well-designed and clean with none of the dirty, dingy smells that lead you to believe that you may get infected from just being there. Second, from top to bottom the staff are professional, empathetic, positive and (whether faked or not) give you the impression that they truly care about your health and well-being. All of my questions were answered so I was mentally prepared on what the procedure was, why it was being done and what to expect before, during and after the surgery. It's all about attitude and the HOI staff clearly enjoy what they do and working at HOI as part of a great team. I was fortunate to have a private room (don't know if this is the norm). The choices and quality of the food was amazing. I think a lot of people don't understand the current state of healthcare. The insurance companies continue to squeeze the providers by paying less and less for procedures and it is amazing to me how providers are able to retain good staff and a maintain as standard level of care. Hoag is able to execute well. It probably has a big endowment to offset lower and lower revenues, but as patients, we are the beneficiaries. Look, I understand that my experience might have been the rare exception, but I really don't think so. And I'm sure that others have some very legitimate complaints, but IMO people sometimes nitpick and overblow minor complaints which then colors what was actually a pretty good overall experience, especially when you look at the results. It is very easy to complain these days. The HOI staff are human just like us. They may be tired, have stress in their lives (who doesn't?) and/or may a mistake. But I truly think that they care and I don't think that anyone can say that they've never made a mistake at work. As far as I'm concerned, if I ever need major surgery again, I will first see if I could do it at Hoag. I understand why Hoag has received OC's #1 hospital ranking multiple times. read more

The prep was a series of emailed and written surveys, phone calls, appointments and meetings. Nothing was left to chance. I was completely prepared mentally, physically and my home was ready to assist in my recovery. Day of surgery went just as smoothly and the staff was cool, efficient and very kind. I will fill this out more later, but because both the Orthopaedic Specialty Institute Surgeons AND Hoag were so phenomenal, I had to write a little something just to let you know. First, the surgeons are great. THR Total Hip Replacement Surgery was great and amazing. More dets later. HOAG: Great Pre Surgery Informational Sessions which you must attend. It's worth bringing any local support and caretakers with you that you can. I asked the question everyone who is in a couple wanted to know but didn't dare ask: What About Sex? The Orthopaedic Specialty Institute already covered that really well in their handouts to us potential patients. Still... we all had a few additional questions. This will remain PG 13. Some items which might be you or your partner's favorites might forever be OFF the table. I think certain positions are going to be more challenging to find different variations to do the same thing for Gay men than others. Just, read it and DO ASK. And delightfully, while MOST penetration sex is OFF MENU completely for 30 days (yeah DAY 31! lol), some OTHER ITEMS which are not penetrating (hint, hint, hint) CAN be mutually enjoyed. So, it's not that everything is off limits for 30 days. All the couples brightened up when I asked and our educator presenter answered. HOSPITAL FOOD: OMG! It's actually GOOD you could order this at a restaurant GOOD. I made the mistake of allowing my APPETITE and TASTE lead me to order the meatloaf and small salad. I should have and could have order multiple small salads which were EASY TO DIGEST post surgery. I ate 3 bites of the DELICIOUS meatloaf and felt my stomach constrict. Yes, idiot that I was, I FORGOT. Red Meat is the hardest to digest. I had just fasted for 24 hours and had MAJOR SURGERY. Light proteins even after we pass the jello and broth test. I just go excited. My sister finished it. Eat the salad first. Easy to digest. Alvin was my nurse. I can't remember who in the names I saved was my PT but by God, I was leaving that day because I'm on the young side for the surgery. Congenital not other. And my surgeon Dr. Jay Patel had said I probably could. With my CoShare of the insurance being still steep, I was highly motivated. She worked with me and my sister and I, ahem, also PRODUCED and got to leave the same day. Apparently, I am unusual, but my nurses all laughed, but they could see I was determined and motivated. I was also clear that if I couldn't do it, I wouldn't. I had certain distances I needed to cover. We did repeated in 1 day. The biggest being after distance of can you make it from your home bedroom bed to your bathroom was GETTING IN and OUT of a car seat. Yup. THAT took some doing. Seriously, it's a big deal. BRING A BIG PILLOW for you for the Passenger seat, both for the CUSH which you will need AND the HEIGHT raised difference. You will never look a person using the wheel chair shopping cart trying to navigate the over stuffed shopping aisles at the grocers and Walmart the same again. You WILL be that person for awhile, and you will experience the CHALLENGE of getting items from the upper shelves when there is staff right there, and they see you and don't offer or sort of make eye contact to check if you WANT help to help you. And the over stocked areas by the check out? Good luck turning the corner when they have another BIN right there. And none of them know what to do. PAIN FREE and I walk GREAT now. 100% worth it. I was apprehensive about my hip replacement but as soon as I came under the care of the doctors and nurses at HOI I was able to relax. Presurgical prep was thorough. The surgery itself was a breeze and the post surgical care was extraordinary. In particular, nursing attention was amazing. HOI is one class act. Able to get an appointment within a week to see Dr. Patel for bilateral hip replacement and right knee replacement. The office is a well oiled machine and on time. Check in receptionists were busy but were friendly and efficient. Office waiting room was huge with plenty of seating so you weren't sitting on top of each other. Nurse took me to exam room and then was escorted to Xray room where the tech took X-rays of hips and knees. The tech was very friendly and carried a conversation to make me comfortable. Dr Patel then came in and we went over the X-rays. We decided to start with the left hip. He explained everything and what to expect. I worked in the medical field for 47+ years so I called some of the reps and Dr. Patel came highly recommended. I felt very comfortable with him. The office sets up everything and all you need to do is follow the plan and get everything done before surgery. Love this hospital. I had hip surgery on March 20,2019. Doctor was Dr. Caillouette. He is outstanding. I've done water therapy and absolutely love it. I'm back slowly doing indoor and outdoor bike riding. I'm back working out with my trainer and doing Barre classes. I'm 6 months out. I did a 25 mile bike ride on November 3,2019. read more

Excellent facility the staff was great everyone was very nice always greeted with a hello and a smile if you're not sure where your going someone will walk you there ,if they say they will call at 2pm they call at 2pm my husband's surgery was seamless from beginning to end. The only thing I didn't like was I thought they sent him home too soon he had surgery Monday came home Tuesday I was not expecting that so needless to say it's day three and I'm running on about 4hrs total sleep btw it was a total knee replacement. read more
