    Revision 6/2023.
    Julie W.

If you have previously had back surgery, it has been some time since then, and you now need a revision/update of hardware: I am going to save you some time and effort in your research to find the most capable surgeon for your procedure. My background: I had major spine surgery (L-4, L-5) laminectomy in 1997 (Dr.Mitchell Cohen was the surgeon, he's now retired). The hardware and appliance were supposed to last 10 years. Fast forward to this year (2023 - approximately 26 years later) and sciatica has returned and I am experiencing that familiar pain and weakness. I visited a Physical Therapist (PT) who then referred me to a local spine surgeon. I interviewed other surgeons over the course of about a year. Some told me to just stick with PT. Some said I should wait until I am in my 70's/80's to get surgery ( I am Female, mid sixties). My search intensified and a highly recommended surgeon told me that the surgery I needed was complex and he would not be able to do it. He told me to contact Dr. Pawel Jankowski. Which I did. Dr. Jankowski ordered additional scans and put together a plan for surgery. He was clear on what was going to be done and the projected outcome. I had the surgery at Hoag this past June. Hospital stay was about a week. Hospital care at Hoag Newport was outstanding. Follow up care with Dr. Jankowski is very satisfactory. He oversaw complete wound care, ordered an electronic bone stimulation device and gave me clear directions on how to use the brace and how to protect myself from injury while healing. I was given a phone/text number to use for any question or clarification with Dr. Jankowski's assistant, Paritash. This entire process has been outstanding. Professional demeanor, exceptional competence, fantastic communication, excellent outcome- all the boxes checked. I am now with an outstanding Physical Therapist ( Nathan Kindstrand- Tustin Physical Therapy Specialists) who is helping me to recover, fully. I would like to again mention a unique feature offered by Dr. Jankowski. That phone/text capability with Paritash, his very capable assistant. I had questions throughout the process and she was timely and clear in her responses to me, without fail. She saw to paperwork needed by my employer. She and Dr. Jankowski are kind and caring and their dedication to patients is clear. I have never experienced this open level of communication to solve questions and issues with a doctor's office like this. If you are on this site looking for answers to getting relief from back pain, I hope this review has been helpful.

Dr. Pawal Jankowski gave me my life back. I had horrific back pain for almost two years, went to multiple pain management places, had hundreds of injections and nothing helped. I was in pain 24/7 and could no longer do the activities I loved; even walking a short distance was painful. Dr. Jankowski was recommended by one of the pain management doctors and after extensive research, and then meeting Dr. Jankowski, I knew he was the surgeon to help me. He explained in detail what my surgery and recovery would entail and as I teared up, he said, "I know this is scary for you, but it's not for me because I know what I'm doing and I can fix you." So as his office was organizing the operating room and hospital stay I went through a series of tests to prep for surgery. I had a myriad of questions, almost daily, and the doctor's assistant Paritash was a Godsend. Not only did she answer each text in a timely manner, but her responses were so kind and gracious and informative. She made me feel as if I were her only patient. I had my surgery at Hoag on Sept. 15, 2023. Dr. Jankowski and Paritash arranged my entire hospital stay with ICU and Acute care, and then even home care once I was released. My surgery was fairly extensive consisting of a Lumbar 2 through pelvis posterior instrumentation fusion. The x-rays make me look like the bionic woman. I knew almost immediately the surgery was a success. The pain I was having just days after surgery was just surgery recovery pain, nothing like the stabbing back/spine pain I was having previously. It is now 3 months since my surgery and I am virtually pain free. As I started this review, I will reiterate, Dr. Jankowski gave me my life back. All of my friends and family have said they can hear it in my voice and see it in my smile that I feel alive again. I cannot recommend Dr. Jankowski enough, he is a miracle worker in my eyes. And Paritash was my angel through this whole process. If you are looking for a neurosurgeon, just one visit with Dr. Jankowski and you will know you have found your doctor!!

    David T.

After years of dealing with lumbar issues, and having gone through pain management with injections, I was referred to a neurologist who did some tests and sent me to Dr. Jankowski. Dr. Jankowski looked at my scans and recommended a fusion of my L4-L5 (TLIF). He was informative and caring, and made sure my questions were answered. During the pre-surgery approvals his assistant, Paritash, was in constant contact with me, my insurance, and with my other doctors that needed to OK my surgery. She dealt with initial insurance denials patiently. Whenever I had a question and called her, she either answered or called me back right away. During my 2 night hospital stay, several nurses told me I was in good hands. I'm now 3 weeks out from my surgery and recovering. Dr. Jankowski ensures me that I'm on schedule for a normal recovery. I feel comfortable recommending Dr. Jankowski and Paritash to anyone that mentions needing back surgery!

I had generally good experiences with doctors I had seen there in the past. He is more of a spine specialist, focusing on the neck and back. When I came in, I was having issues with both my neck and shoulders. After looking at my neck X-rays and MRIs, he noted that my shoulders were likely the bigger issue at the time. I could move my neck up and down without too much trouble, but my shoulders had difficulty rotating. Despite that, he was able to refer me to another DISC doctor, Dr. Shore. More importantly, I never felt like I was being rushed out the door, unlike many doctors who seem to just want to get patients in and out for a paycheck. In fact, toward the end of my appointment, he made sure I did not have any more questions before we parted. To me, that is a sign of a doctor who actually cares, which feels surprisingly rare given the number of doctors I have seen over the last several years. While he was great, I also have to give a special shoutout to his assistant, Joanna. She might be one of the best doctor's assistants I have seen. The assistants I have known generally get a good idea of what is going on and log your symptoms so the doctor can look at you more efficiently, but Joanna went above and beyond. She did more than a typical assistant would by checking the multiple issues I was having, including rotator tests, hand-grip strength, shoulder rotation, and various sensitive points. Similar to Dr. Melikian, I felt like she genuinely cared about what was going on and wanted to make sure I was receiving the right treatment. She was the first person to make me realize that I needed to focus more on my shoulder. Of course, she still told the doctor about everything just in case, but it says something when an assistant does more thorough checks than some actual MDs I have seen. It also says something that, even though I did not receive treatment from Dr. Melikian and he ultimately referred me elsewhere, he was one of the few doctors who was very assertive about making sure I scheduled a follow-up appointment. Even when I was in a rush to leave, his assistant reached out and emailed me to schedule an appointment, making sure I was okay with it. That is the sign of a doctor who really cares. Overall, in a weird way, I am kind of sad that my issues were not more related to my neck, since both Dr. Melikian and his assistant, Joanna, were great. Based on the reviews I have seen on Yelp and Google, many people seem to have had similarly positive experiences. If your issues are more related to your neck or back, I would consider getting an opinion from Dr. Melikian.

Dr. Mark E. Anderson Is the Surgeon You Want When It Matters Most…read more I recommend Dr. Mark E. Anderson without hesitation. Before choosing him to perform my cervical fusion at C5-C7, I sought the opinions of three physician friends--two surgeons and a radiologist. Each independently told me that Dr. Anderson was not merely among the best neurosurgeons Orange County had to offer, but one of the finest in the country. My experience gave me no reason to doubt them. My surgery was expected to take approximately three hours. When I awakened nearly nine hours later, my wife, Kari, and I naturally wanted to know what had happened. Dr. Anderson's answer was characteristically direct: "You had an otherwise lethal spiral neck fracture." He then explained what he had encountered. My neck contained a minefield of bone spurs, which had been instrumental in gradually freezing it into place and necessitating the surgery in the first place. Removing them safely added approximately six hours to the operation. He also explained the complication that had led to my cardiac arrest during surgery and the lifesaving measures that followed. There is no graceful little euphemism for this: my heart stopped on the operating table. Dr. Anderson and the surgical team responded with the knowledge, speed, and mastery necessary to save my life and complete an extraordinarily difficult operation successfully. The cervical hardware placed in my neck was designed by Dr. Anderson himself. Over a decade later, I remain pain-free. Among all the people I know--or have even heard of--who have undergone cervical fusion or multiple-disc replacement, I am the only one whose recovery has left him entirely free of pain. That is the perspective I hope prospective patients will consider when reading complaints about Dr. Anderson's bedside manner. Is he warm and effusive? No. He is unlikely to hold your hand, gaze sympathetically into your eyes, and make you feel as though you have wandered into a particularly soothing episode of Marcus Welby, M.D. His manner can be blunt, intensely focused, and emotionally reserved. I once brought this up to him directly. He stopped, turned toward me, and the two of us cracked up together. I came away understanding that his reserve was not indifference. It was simply the manner of a man whose extraordinary gifts are concentrated elsewhere--and, in my case, precisely where I needed them most. There are physicians whose greatest strength is making patients feel comfortable. Dr. Anderson's greatest strength is knowing exactly what to do when the situation becomes profoundly uncomfortable, unexpectedly complex, and life-threatening. Naturally, every patient deserves to be treated with respect, and communication matters. But bedside charm should not be confused with surgical competence, nor should an emotionally reserved personality be mistaken for a lack of concern. You choose Dr. Mark Anderson because you are in serious pain and do not want to live with it any longer. You choose him because something is dangerously wrong and you want the person operating near your spinal cord to possess exceptional skill, judgment, experience, and composure. You do not choose him to hold your hand. You choose him because you want that hand to be remarkably steady when your life is in it. For me, Dr. Anderson was quite literally a lifesaver. He is a Godsend, and I remain profoundly grateful that he was my surgeon.
