Massage is such a personalized art that it's difficult to say (beyond objective training, knowledge, and breadth of technique, of course) whether one therapist is 'better' than another. We all prefer different approaches, techniques, amounts of pressure, areas of focus, even atmosphere. But Kevin is a perfect match for all my preferences. I appreciate his extensive knowledge of muscle groups and connections, and that he talks me through what he's targeting as he targets it (I'm sure if I asked for quiet he'd be fine with that too, but I like having a side of education with my massages). He is very collaborative with his approach and asks for feedback and what's working and what isn't, what will be better to focus more or less on next time. This means every subsequent massage will be better and more tailored to what I need. And all the cerebral stuff aside - his massages just FEEL GOOD. Sometimes things are good-on-the-edge-of-painful, but that's how I like it - that's when it feels like it's working. He targets all of the knots I develop with my chronically messed up spine, some I'm aware of, most I'm not. But when he gets to them and I feel things releasing, I know they were in there. He also never does that thing some therapists do where they think they're working out a knot but are just pressing painfully on a bone over and over. It's hard to describe how good a massage can be in words, but I think you get the picture. You should absolutely give Kevin a try, especially if you're having trouble finding a therapist you really like.

I've been to Kevin for massage therapy at least half a dozen times now and he really is fantastic…read more He can do everything from a light, relaxing Swedish massage to a deep trigger-point release and everything in between, or combine them for a session that's relaxing, energizing, and therapeutic! He's really good at finding the knots and working them out. He can also identify some of your problem areas and suggest stretches you can do at home to make those muscles feel and work better (but isn't preachy or pushy about it). He's friendly, pleasant, and doesn't try to chitchat with you during your massage like some therapists I've been to. (Maybe he will if you want to; I like to be quiet during massages, so he doesn't talk to me except to occasionally ask how the pressure is.) Kevin works out of a chiropractic/wellness office and the facility is relaxing, comfortable, super-clean, and cozy. It's a little tricky to find the first time, but it's convenient to many parts of Durham and there's plenty of parking right in front of the door. His table is comfortable and the lotion he uses is very nice--not greasy or overly fragrant like I've had at some massage therapists in the past, where you hate to put your clothes back on at the end because you wonder if you'll ever get the oil out of them. I really feel like you get a better-than-spa quality massage for MUCH lower-than-spa prices with Kevin. I highly recommend him.

His setup is comfortable, his schedule is flexible and we can usually find a slot exactly when we need it. He is very attuned to each person's needs, varying the pressure level and focus areas accordingly. I have now been seeing Paul for my back and hip pains for many years. I appreciate his thoughtful analysis of my situation and his personalized formulation of exercises to alleviate my pains. He has helped me understand the science behind Feldenkrais and the interplay of my skeleton, nerves, and muscles. Part of the therapy is developing a kinesthetic sense/body awareness so that you can compare movements on one side of your body versus the other side. Paul is expert in directing your attention and asking the right questions. As Paul is also a licensed physical therapist, my appointments are partially covered by Medicare and my secondary health insurance. My sessions at the moment are via video telemedicine and they have been an excellent resource for care in my home. Paul's experienced eye catches movement disfunction. Recently he asked me to direct my computer's camera to an area where I could walk. He watched. And I returned to converse with him via my computer screen. He said, "I'm going to show you an exaggerated version of how I saw you walk." He proceeded to walk with a distinctly hunched over old-person's walk, and then he said, "I could see you beginning to walk like this, so let me show you exercises you can do to counteract this tendency you are developing."
