Small platter w/ black dragon and Wortley roll
Matthew Y.

A great addition to the food scene of a city that's in desperate need of good sushi options. Juxtaposed against the quaint old backdrop of Wortley village, Roll Roll holds its own against the other impressive food options in its area. We ordered the small sushi platter which came with a mix of maki and nigiri. The small platter comes with two special rolls (pro tip: you can ask them which special rolls you would like and they do their best to accommodate). We got the black dragon and the Wortley roll as our two special rolls, and both were delicious. All the maki rolls were filled with fish and toppings, and the rice was fairly light. The unagi on the black dragon was sweet with a lovely char and the scallops on the Wortley roll worked well with the toppings to create a very flavorful bite in each piece. While the location and the aesthetic is charming, and the staff are incredibly friendly, one drawback of this restaurant is the fact that there is limited capacity (both in seating and turnover). The restaurant can only accommodate approximately 10 diners comfortably and there is only one sushi chef working at a time. A good way around this is to call ahead on the day of or even a day before to place your order for pickup! Overall a great experience, will definitely be back in the future.

Bruce roll, Wortley roll, Torched press sushi BBQ eel, salmon sashimi, Scallop sushi

My boyfriend has been telling me about this sushi restaurant for the last few months (he claims it's one of the best sushi places in London!). I finally went to try it out with him over the weekend. We gave the restaurant a call to order our sushi (it's more of a take-out restaurant, with a couple of seats should you choose to eat in). The staff was very friendly and accommodating and let us know about the sushi platter deals (10% off if paying in cash). We considered the sushi platter, but decided against it as we were told that everything is "random" - this essentially meant they would select which rolls to give you and the amount of sashimi to serve you. We decided to opt for the following instead: Bruce roll $14 Wortley roll $16 Torched press sushi BBQ eel $18 Salmon sashimi $5.5 Scallop sushi $5.5 Although on the pricier end, everything was really fresh and delicious. Coming from Toronto, this was definitely comparable (if not better) than some of the sushi restaurants I've been to. I honestly loved everything we ordered and would recommend it!

This is the best gem in Wortley Village. I had the roll, roll, roll and it was amazing. It was the best $15 I have ever spent.

We loved the curtain at the entrance, the sleek black decor, the cherry blossom tree, and the glowing moon feature. The space felt comfortable, clean, and more romantic than we expected. Service was warm and attentive as well. The food matched the ambiance. Their approach seems to lean toward a creative Japanese-Korean fusion, and everything we tried was delicious. I ordered the Salmon Lover Combo, and it was a lot of sushi--in the best way. The fish was fresh, and the addition of sprouts on top was a fun, unexpected touch. The salmon pizza was another standout: generous in portion and full of flavour--crispy, saucy, and fresh. My partner's ramen was hearty and comforting, and the cheese wontons we shared were excellent. We especially enjoyed the thinly sliced chillies on top, which added a playful kick. Our second visit, however, was more of a 3/5 experience. I ordered the katsu, and while the flavour was good, the chef placed the salad directly on top of the cutlet, which made it turn watery by the end. It was still a pleasant meal overall, just not as memorable or polished as our first time.

In the picture I took, the excellent, homemade-tasting, oniony curry sauce is off to the side so you can add it to the katsu (and rice) just before you dig in. This means your cutlet stays crispy the whole time. Wonderful presentation in a lovely to-go bento box. Meal included a cup of miso soup as well. The other picture was my partner's pick. Unagi poke bowl with added salmon (for an extra $4). Great portions and really well flavoured. She commented especially favourably on the tempura crispy bits throughout the bowl, which provided great texture. Go here. Order. You won't be sorry. They have a nice 20% discount for first-timers on the website. Also a nice 15% discount for pick-up.

Also got takoyaki, chicken karage, and pork teriyaki katsu and we enjoyed it all. Highly highly recommend!

The only decent dish was the tempura ($6) which was hot, had a good variety of mushrooms, broccoli, sweet potatoes and eggplant and provided more than the 6 pieces advertised. The gyoza ($6) were deep fried despite my request and I'd be willing to bet that they were in fact the type that you can purchase frozen already deep fried and then refried when ordered. They were incredibly dry and hard. The beef enoki mushroom dish ($12) tasted stale and heavily coated in the sauce it is served with. I'm guessing to disguise the fact that the beef was turning. The hot and sour soup ($6) was bland, though the tofu had a nice texture and the soup had lots of white mushrooms in it which I liked. The spicy tuna rolls ($6.5) were the most egregious disappointment. They used canned tuna! It was terrible. I won't be going back. For the $40 this meal cost I could have purchased similar items of superior quality at the grocery store for half the price.
