First time at Rolo's and I was super impressed with how attentive and friendly the entire staff was. Everyone there genuinely seemed to love their job! smiles from ear to ear, which is rare to see these days. The host seated us right away, and from the drinks to the food, everything was perfect. Every single person who brought something to our table was so kind and pleasant. The restaurant itself is surprisingly spacious, you'd never guess from how modest the front looks. Beautiful ambiance and intimate lighting throughout. My only comment is that our server was the only one wearing a fitted cap. I didn't think that was part of the dress code, especially given the restaurant's upscale, polished aesthetic. The fitted cap felt a bit too casual for the setting and made our interaction slightly awkward since it covered his eyes and made eye contact difficult. First we had the polenta bread with chili butter with the heirloom tomato and stonewall fruit salad. Great combination. Then we had the grilled lasagna and as someone who typically don't like lasagna - this was to die for. Last course was the burger and crispy potatoes war style. The red sauce was spare and lacking on the sides of the lasagna and there was a lump of red sauce in the middle of the piece. I think they should add more sauce. The sides were burnt and so it tasted a little more like bread in an odd way to me. The double cheeseburger was tasty and juicy included onions, but it didn't have anything distinctly in flavor that would make me crave it. Overall, a nice place to visit, but not somewhere I'd go repeatedly. 4 stars for service. But the food would be a 3/5. We did walk in on a weekday at 5pm and there was no line. Finally got to try Rolo's, and I was seriously impressed by the quality of the meal. Took my dad out for his birthday, and we ended up ordering a good chunk of the menu. Here's the breakdown: Apps: -Polenta Bread (Flaky Sea Salt & Sesame w/ Wild Oregano) - 8/10 Perfectly fluffy and charred, with just the right amount of seasoning. Solid on its own, but I'd recommend pairing it with something for dipping. -Stracciatella - 9/10 Paired beautifully with the polenta bread. Think: the creamy inside of burrata topped with seasoning reminiscent of za'atar. So, so tasty. -Hamachi Crudo - 10/10 Sleeper hit. The unexpected yogurt-like base leaned more Mediterranean than Japanese, and it just worked. Large Plates: -Branzino - 9/10 Unexpectedly amazing. The mayo base and mushrooms brought everything together in the best way. -Wagyu Skirt Steak - 8/10 Really solid, but not mind-blowing. -Two-Sheet Lasagna - 7/10 Super unique take on lasagna--worth trying for the texture and presentation alone. I tried to make reservations a few days before my party of 4 wanted to go; only to find out that they were completely booked until 9:30pm on that Tues evening! They mentioned that they do keep a few tables open for walk-ins; and you can also eat at the bar. So instead of picking another date for dinner, we decided to take our chances as walk-ins. Well.... I showed up at 5:30pm hoping to get a table by 6pm. To my surprise, they were completely booked and had no room for more walk-ins! However, they had plenty of outdoor seating available...but it was 90 degrees that day! Well, big shout-out to host Shaun, who went out of his way to rearrange table seatings/reservations, and made room for my parry of 4! Now THAT is top-notched customer service! Thanks so much, Shaun! You totally saved our evening! Ok, onto Rolo's! I didn't realize that Rolo's took up 3 storefronts! We were seated in the middle section, near their open kitchen. I was amazed that all their delicious dishes came out of that small open kitchen, and it was intriguing to see the chefs/staff do their "thing". They are a well-oiled machine, and made all their hard work seem effortless and dare I say, stress-free?!?! Kudos to all! Rolo's menu isn't huge, which I appreciated. Rolos has definitely became one of our favorite restaurants over night. My boyfriend and I think of this place regularly and salivate over the idea of taking another bite of their smoky burger. My boyfriend and I have visited Rolo's about twice now. With each time as good as the next. We always order the same things because it made such an impact the first time, but the next time we're back, we'll definitely have to try something new. Our staples? The burger is a must; it's smoky, juicy, buttery, and just so much goodness in such a simple combination of bread, beef, and cheese. The lasagna is thin crusted, crispy, light cheesy flavor, and just so different from the heavy lasagnas we are normally used to. The war fries are good, but in my opinion, the sauce can be a little much so get it on the side. And the polenta bread is smoky from the wood fired oven, yet so flavorful and soft. It literally just melts in your mouth. The waiters are always extremely friendly, it's pretty casual, but there's a warm inviting ambiance that comes with the dim lighting and romantic touches of the restaurant. I made reservations for a surprise brunch for my husband on Father's Day. I was told my mutual friends that I should make them far in advance. I got to the restaurant at 11am when they opened and there was line but we were sat down quickly. The nice host had us seated within seconds. We were walked back passing the front big room waitress hallway and fire oven kitchen that is in the open where you can see the chefs cooking. I love the small details to the aesthetic of the restaurant. The decoration and floor plan was very well thought out. I mean it was just absolutely stunning! The waiter was so nice and I forgot his name even though I asked but he was slim tall with a short sleeved button down polo and black hair I believe with gages. Well anyway I mentioned that because he hands down was so efficient and knew all the details (even the small ones) to the questions my husband has about the menu. I always hear you must get there earlier for their burgers and ohhhh myyyyy god! The burger which was on the special with extra add on option of bacon, I was blown away. My husband got this steak dish with salad which had the perfect combination. The dessert was excellent as well , we did split it due to us being so full. Had been hearing a lot about Rolos for a really long time and finally decided to make my way down there and try it. The cocktails were pretty good and the food was great but we would only consider returning with a different server. Our server was friendly but he was very pushy and very adamant on upselling us on almost everything. We were a party of four and had already ordered cocktails and a different entree each but was persistent that we order appetizers, more than once. Then when we finally said yes he brought out an appetizer that contained a food restriction for two people in our party so they were not able to even eat it (he did bring out another one on the house but it was already something we didn't really want). The ambiance in the restaurant was great, classic Italian fine dining vibes. Aside from that the food was pretty good but nothing out of the ordinary, there are lots of good restaurants in New York, you won't regret trying this one, but you'll live if you don't. read more

A few years back when Rolo's opened in Ridgewood it brought with it major discussions of gentrification that when you google "Ridgewood Gentrification" I am sure Rolo's will be in nearly all the front page links. New York Mag had an extensive Grub Street write up and champions like Jeremy Allen White probably didn't help to alleviate fears of the big G. For me personally whenever I come this far south in Ridgewood I still experience a touch of PTSD from my HS/early college years and the too many times I had to come to bail out a family member from the 104th or help a friend getting in trouble in this area. Unfortunately this area represented a hot spot of the drug trade that plagued the city in late 80s/early 90s. My opinion is having a place like Rolo's is a welcome alternative to those crime filled times and the nearby drug dens that were prevalent in the area. Of course the issue isn't that black and white for all. Despite the history, Ridgewood always had a beauty and cool vibe to the neighborhood represented by its architecture and the working class residents - probably what brought the owners here to make Rolo's home. Rolo's space fits that aesthetic well and I immediately noticed upon arrival. When we first arrived we told the hostess that we had a reservation she looks at the screen, turns to her coworker and says "Brandon Walsh" (probably referring to the 90s "90210" TV show) and he replies oh definitely and they share a chuckle. Witnessing an inside joke wasn't the best start, but the rest of the night made me put that behind me. The service was incredibly attentive hitting every mark throughout the meal. We order "family style" as the waiter encouraged us to do and we had already planned. The polenta bread we ordered was infused with oregano oil - it was a bit overpowering, but overall delicious. We loved the grilled oyster mushrooms it had so much umami. The two sheet lasagna lived up to the hype, but we can see the complaints of lack of filling. We planned on ordering a house dry-aged prime cut, but with the min size being about 32oz it was too much for our party of two - we got the wagyu beef skirt steak instead which was really good, but seemed little more toward blue instead of rare - perhaps I'd get this medium next time. The war style potatoes were really great - we didn't know exactly what made them war style since we stopped the waiter from explaining so it was fun guessing the flavors that made it up - I won't spoil the surprise here. We finished with a French toast with ice cream dessert special. All in all a great experience. If our ordering was tweaked slightly probably would make this 5 stars. read more

I had a great experience at Rolo's! We arrived around 5 pm when they open and there was already a pretty big crowd inside. I opted to try a walk in instead of reserving, and luckily since the space is quite big, there were a good amount of available tables for walk-in so we were seated promptly. We were told that the burger was limited, and obviously I had to get it because it was the sole reason why I came. I ordered the burger, the war fries, the beet salad, pickled carrots, and their bread pudding special. The pickled carrots were a pass, as much as I like carrots they weren't very pickled. They were more like sliced carrots in a vinaigrette. The beet salad was delicious. The first bite of the burgers was great. The bread kept its integrity and the meat was very fatty and juicy. My only complaint is that I wish that there was some sort of acid to cut through the greasiness of the burger. By the time I was halfway through I had no desire to eat any more due how heavy it felt. Fries are okay I wouldn't get them next time. The cinnamon bread pudding was outstanding. I'm really glad that I tried this restaurant and I would definitely recommend it. read more

Service was warm and welcoming and the space is big but dimly lit (for dinner service), creating an intimate setting. We ordered the polenta bread app with the chili butter and while we enjoyed the bread, the spread was not our favorite. We also ordered the wagyu steak - delicious and perfectly cooked- with a side of war style potatoes (yum!!). So glad to finally make it to Ridgewood and experience the Rolo's magic for myself! I made sure to book an early table in order to secure one of their famed burgers (spoiler alert: I ordered an extra because it's just that good). Even though the restaurant opens for dinner service at 5pm, by the time we arrived for our 5:30pm reservation, the entire restaurant was pretty much packed. We started off with their daily special, a grilled hamachi collar ($26) with a sticky miso glaze with flesh so tender and silky you'd hardly believe it was fish. We also ordered a sesame + wild oregano polenta bread ($10) and a Calabrian chili butter polenta bread ($13) as they were featured heavily on social media. I thought the texture of the polenta breads were so unique-- they really reminded me of mochi bread as they were slightly chewy and very fluffy despite the thin crackly crust. I think I preferred the Calabrian chili butter over the sesame, though the latter would be perfect for a za'atar lover. Along with the two cheeseburgers ($18 ea), we also ordered the famous two sheet lasagna ($32) and a leafy greens + herbs salad ($15) and "war style" crispy potatoes ($12) as sides. The lasagna was pretty charred and the pasta sheets were quite thick, like dumpling wrappers. But, it really was the burgers that stole the show-- fatty, juicy, oozing with beefy, cheesy flavor and dressed with garlicky onions. We absolutely loved the unassuming long hot that came with the burger, which was not only pickled but smoked as well, which added on so many layers of flavor and provided the perfect sweet and acidic contrast to the decadent burger. The "war style" potatoes were crispy wedges with a healthy dollop of mayo, a peanut-forward satay sauce, and raw onions-- these were quite familiar to me as the original Dutch version, called patatje oorlog, was a late night favorite of mine during my travels. The salad came with a mountain of frisée, chives, and dill all tossed in a zingy dijonaise dressing that provided a necessary acidic component to an otherwise rich and heavy meal. We also had a passionfruit pot de crème ($12) for dessert and it was very delicately set with a soft creamy texture. Although the custard portion was very vanilla-forward, the passionfruit curd on the bottom was a nice touch to balance the dessert. Overall, we were very pleased with our meal and absolutely loved the service as well. The servers were very knowledgeable about the menu and very attentive to detail as well. One thing I will add is that the tables are quite small, especially for the two-seaters. Even as a party of four, I thought the booths were on the smaller side as well. The restaurant space is pretty long and I would recommend avoiding the bar area as it gets quite loud, and trying to snag a table by the oven instead. read more

The menu advises that you arrive earlier in the day as this may sell out by 1 PM- we came for brunch around noon and had no trouble ordering the double cheeseburger with bacon. It was a great burger. Was it life-changing, no- but was it super worth getting for brunch especially at the price it was offered? Yes! The other menu options are...fine. Nothing super thrilling. We went with the arctic char, which was similar to seasoned lox. While the fish itself was fine (especially with the dipping sauce it came with), the polenta bread offered on the side was the real star. The bread (either as a side or app) is absolutely a must! We also opted for the potatoes on the side, war style. I'm not sure which war this is styled after, as I don't remember learning about the war of mayo & peanut sauce, but this was an excellent addition to the meal. Wow this spot was on 10 for everything. We had a res and sat down at one of their tables in the main dining room and it's such a cute setup. The waitress was friendly and attentive, the staff was great with clearing plates and bringing new ones. We ordered two polenta flatbreads which were very good but swimming in oil so if that's your steeze then you'll love it. The tahini chickpeas with tahini and lemon was special and the watermelon salad was the star of the appetizers. The flavor profile was so unique and refreshing. We then ordered the burger, crispy potatoes and sweet corn + brown butter trout. Each item had such amazing flavor profiles and was seasoned exceptionally well. The sauce for the crispy potatoes was also perfect - had to take it to go! We also did have the strawberry ice cream which isn't a must order but glad we tried! A short day and a half stay in Williamsburg/Brooklyn on the way to Berlin. Rolo's was certainly the most anticipated spot on this tour after seeing their fantastic Eater video and it certainly didn't disappoint. Their Double Cheeseburger with the $3 Bacon Addition was the most flavorful and wonderfully textured burger I've had in years. The pickled pepper made for an interesting off-beat accompaniment. The polenta bread was simple but delicious. A layer of polenta with olive oil and sea salt, could eat that all day. I also ordered a Strawberry Passionfruit Punsch, which was served in a small goblet. Nice blend of rum, strawberry cordial, passion fruit and lime tiki bitters. There are quite a few more dishes I'd like to try at Rolo's. Unfortunately for me, Rolo's in in a different time zone. But I'm glad I got a chance to try it. read more

Was so blown away by my whole experience here!! Our server, Tess, was excellent! She gave lots of great tips, suggested the exact right amount of food to get, and gave feedback on our questions. She also was super friendly and took time to really chat through our meal. We got the burger, excellent but tbh tasted like all the awesome burgers in the city, the skirt steak was incredible with the herb butter on top it was a huge portion and cooked to perfection, the two layer lasagna I thought was going to be just okay but it was my favorite bite of the night. It was so good and unique and again a great portion, def not a gimmick, get it! Also got the French fries "wild style" and that sauce was perfection, spicy, crispy, and perfect. Rolo's is a Ridgewood staple that always lives up to the hype. My best friend and I come here semi-regularly because the food is simply to die for! The staff is always very fast and typically have very helpful input for what to order. It's a cozy interior (although I do miss the outdoor seating) and we love the open kitchen design. The Last Word Sour is an absolute MUST try (this restaurant turned me on to Chartreuse and I cannot get enough), and the wagyu steak with garlic butter is by far one of the best, juiciest and most flavorful steaks out there. The window on the ceiling also contributed to the relaxing nature of the restaurant! We went for brunch and the burger was heavenly. IMPECCABLE. after snagging and rescheduling a few times, i finally made my way over to Ridgewood! there was a line as soon as the place opened and it quickly filled up. of course i studied the menu before i showed up but i did veer off the course and tried something different. we got these to try: -polenta bread with calabrian chili butter: sooooo airy and soft on the inside and a nice chew on the outside. the calabrian chili butter was a nice touch but a tad over-the-top. -pork ragu pappardelle (daily special): perfectly cooked, al-dente pasta with rich and unctuous pork ragu. it was very well-balanced and left me wanting more. -double cheeseburger: thiiiiiick and meaty but kinda underwhelming at the same time? the flavor was good but it's really hard to mess up a burger... we had high expectations for this and it was just ok IMO. -crispy potatoes "war style": big chunks of fried potatoes and topped with aioli, a super spicy peanut sauce, and chopped onions. the potatoes had great texture but peanut sauce (possible Indonesian influence...?) was very spicy and a tad overpowering. -rhubarb almond tart: just the right amount of sweetness and served with a beautiful creme anglaise. -white negroni & tonic: super refreshing! -ruby port: love Kopke and that's what they stocked. service was awesome, attentive but not intrusive. i really enjoyed my experience here and would love to go back! read more

Came to Rolo's for brunch! We came for a late brunch table around 2:30pm and they were out of a couple of dishes which was quite annoying. The dishes the group ordered was the scrambled eggs, the mrs crispy, the steak, and the bacon. The Mrs.Crispy was the highlight the mix of the eggs with the polenta was a perfect mesh. I have quite bad allergies, and did not feel the most comfortable with the staff reaction to when I said I had an allergy. I would recommend having a more alert reaction when someone brings up their allergy. read more

If i were just judging the burger, would give Rolo's a 5 star review. It was absolutely delicious and lived up to the hype I had read all about online! I also really enjoyed the war fries, which were crispy potato wedges with a spicy peanut sauce and mayo (I'm a sucker for anything peanut!!). At $15, I didn't think the mortadella was particularly worth it. It was good, but I've had better elsewhere at a lower price. The lasagna was a bit overdone, so I got more taste of the char versus flavor of the pasta/filling. I think rolos is a great spot to try once to get the burger (get there early to make sure you get it since we apparently had gotten the last one at around 7pm), but I don't think the rest of the menu is worth going out of the way for. read more

I've had my eye on coming here for a while and finally made it for a late Sunday brunch. We got seated immediately. Our server was really nice and she took the time to explain dishes and give her recs. The food honestly was better than my expectations: - grilled oyster mushrooms (4/5): simple but delicious - beet salad (4/5): not a traditional salad but very fresh and great flavors - pastrami arctic char with polenta bread (5/5): this was special. Wow that polenta bread was perfect. - crispy potatoes "war style" (4.5/5): love the peanut sauce mayo combo. The peanut sauce was very powerful but tasted balanced with the mayo. Everything here was delicious. The cheeseburger is a must have, if you're with a large party and sharing everything, I recommend getting more than one as it does sell out. First off, the bread at Rolo's is *crack*--airy, puffy, soft, and warm. I can't even describe it! Ironically, I came here on National Cheeseburger Day (9/18) without knowing later that night. The burger? Only served medium rare or cooked. I went for medium rare, and it was perfectly juicy, not bloody at all thanks to the thin patties. Cooked would've been too crispy for sure. I landed at JFK and was craving a burger so my friend suggested going here. I got my rental car and drove to Rolo's with my friend and ordered the burger. The burger was not bad but far the best. It was a little bit on the burnt side (bread/meat/toppings) and that overpowered the flavor of the meat. Fries weren't good either. The burger and "war-style" potatoes here are genuinely top-tier. I would put the burger here above Au Cheval's and would seriously consider coming back out here to Ridgewood for it. The "war-style" spicy sesame sauce was a novel unexpected flavor bomb that we liked so much we ordered a second portion. Our group was divided on the polenta breads - they were flavorful with nice puffy texture out of the oven but nothing spectacular. The famous green lasagna was also tasty but the filling was unevenly distributed, so one of my friends got a piece with almost no cheese or filling in it. Finally got a chance to try this neighborhood favorite in Queens. Fare is mainly American Italian with the stand outs being their steaks, lasagna and anything else they cook using the grill. They use a real wood burning grill which adds a smoky flavor to their dishes. Our bread was a little too burnt for my tastes but flavor was good. Ambiance for a Tuesday night was loud and almost every table was full. I would recommend getting a reservation to eat here as it has recently grew in popularity. Reservations fill quickly so book ahead to avoid long waits. We had a reservation and were seating immediately when we arrived. 2 sheet lasagna was a stand out with the top being slightly crisped using their wood fired grill. The Wyagu skirt steak was cooked well and had plenty of flavor. The green sauce on top added to the flavor but the meat alone was flavorful enough for me. The steak had a char flavor which added to the taste well. Our server was friendly and explained the menu to us. Food did take a little long to come out but besides the wait I would recommend stopping by this place. This might be too soon to say, but this restaurant has absolutely made it onto my 12 best of the year. Everything from the atmosphere, service and food was top tier. An absolute must is the 2 sheet lasagna. It is rich but not heavy. Tender, creamy, cozy filling with some wood-fired crispy bits to add some texture to this unique dish. I also loved the Calabrian chili butter polenta bread. Chewy, rippable and full of flavor, so good you can just eat it plain, though I did use this as a scooping vessel for the lasagna. Both also reheat surprisingly well if you decide to take left-overs. I sprung for the Hamachi crudo as a last minute decision before (I assume) it leaves their summer menu. It was so light, refreshing and so incredibly fresh. Probably the best hamachi crudo I've ever had. The caramelized banana ice cream was also delightful and the perfect few bites to round out the meal. I also got their pickled carrots, which were good and had a nice crunch but are not a need-to-get item. Definitely planning on coming back to try and snag the burger and cocktails. read more

From the moment we walked in, the vibes were... off. A standoffish hostess, a cramped little waiting area, and somehow people who arrived after us were seated before us -- noted. Once we sat down, our server started talking to us about wine and then, mid-conversation, was handed a note by another server in the least inconspicuous way possible and immediately walked away. We were already feeling weird, and that somehow made it even more uncomfortable. We genuinely debated leaving at that point but decided to see it through, even though we really wanted to. From that moment on, the service never quite recovered. The food? Surprisingly solid. The lasagna was the clear standout -- really great flavor, honestly the highlight of the night. We also ordered the wagyu steak, which was a letdown. Chewy, unremarkable, and tasted like any average steak you could get elsewhere, especially not what you expect at that price point. TLDR: If you haven't stopped by to Rolo's and you like food - you need to fix that. Came for brunch and yes - the burger is worth it. Loved the polenta bread, the tuna carpaccio, the tahini chick peas, the crispy potatoes. That burger though - 100%. Originally I tried to come another time but that was a burger-centric trip. I reached out and someone from the team let me know that more than likely they'd be sold out of it by then. They said it's a small part of what they do but if that's what I was looking for, it would be better to come earlier. I listened and did come earlier to see what else was going on at Rolo's. The cooking here revolves around a wood-fire grill and that stuff creates magic. We started with the sesame & wild oregano polenta bread, tuna carpaccio and tahini chickpeas. This bread they make is phenomenal. It's soft, it's charred, fluffy and so full of flavor. It's a wonderful blank canvas and they use it as such with a lot of different preparations. Tuna carpaccio was thin but a more rustic slice and I kind of dig that. Not paper-thin but thin enough. The coarse grind on the black pepper gave it this nice crunch in between the layers, lemon zest for some brightness and salt because that's what makes things good. The tahini chickpeas were basically a deconstructed hummus. The chickpeas are whole, nice texture, creamy, garlicky, tons of sesame - I really enjoyed this with the polenta bread. The burger. This is two patties of 75/25 lean/fat pre-smashed goodness. The high-heat from the wood-fire oven just makes this thing oozing of burger juice. The cheese is lovely, the almost smoky like onions are super deep. My only mistake is not getting that coppa bacon, I tried it after but it's okay - that's why you can always visit again. Mrs. Crispy. I probably should have ate this first because that burger is just some powerful stuff. This was kind of like a breakfast pizza or an Italian croque madame. Cheesy, runny yolks, crispy bacon and a delicious polenta bread to put it all together. Crispy Potatoes "War Style". Double-fried for sure, super crispy potato wedges. I have not figured out exactly what the War Style is but it's some sort of aioli, raw onion and what was described as "spicy peanut sauce". I've had my fair share of Asian stuff so when I tasted it I realized - these mofos put Satay sauce on some fries. How has this not been thought of before? Definitely not for the faint of heart but very tasty. Rolo's for brunch set the tone - this was going to be a good food weekend and it was. My only regret is I don't live closer to Ridgewood.
