this is the oldest kosher grocery store that i know of in chicago or the world. they have probably been around before i was born over 73 years ago. all the deli food is top notch including both hard and soft salami, several or each, corned beef, pastrami, roast beef, turkey or chicken you can't go wrong. only place i know of that has beef chopped liver. several types of jewish bread and rolls, sweets, plus koshser hot dogs, sausages, meats and chicken to cook at home. closed early friday afternoons for shabbat and all jewish holidays, passover and high holidays for a week or more. personally i don't go there any more due to the changes in my diet, i gave up all meat, processed food which includes all deli meat and chopped liver. that is a personal dietary choice. otherwise i highly recommend it weather you are jewish or not. read more

The chopped liver was the best I have eaten in 70 years of living in and around Chicago. Other guests agreed. In the store, the service was attentive but a trifle on the gruff side, but that is common in all delis I have shopped or worked at. On the other hand, the checkout people were funny and charming. I left Chicago with 2 salami's in my carryon luggage. The TSA flagged my bag and went through it. Upon finding the sausages, the agent laughed and said "Even if they have kosher sausages where you're going, I'll bet these are better." They did the swab check then let me go. I venture here for a large shopping trip a few times a year, in anticipation of visiting my brother, who loves many things from this place. On the most recent trip, he requested as many 1lb salamis as I could fit in my suitcase, several tubs of chopped liver, no nitrate hot dogs, garlic polish sausages, and I think I threw in some pastrami, just because. The products aren't inexpensive, b/c they're all kosher (I think the 1 lb salamis are between $9-$12, but it's a small price to pay for a happy brother. I don't think I've ever spent less than $100 here, but usually have a hefty basket full of meat goodness. Went to this place for the first time last week. Super friendly people who went out of their way to welcome me. Really old world type of place so if you are looking for fancy or glitzy, this ain't the place for you. The Romanian Pastrami was wonderful, really lean and flavorful. Perfectly spiced sliced turkey. The pot roast I brought home melted in your mouth after I made it. I will definitely go earlier in the day next time and plan to buy more. read more

We drive twice a year from Kansas City to Chicago. It's about a 8 1/2 hr drive. We go to get our kosher meat for Passover & the high holidays. We also visit 2 of our children as well. We know several people who do the same because we can't get the quality of kosher meats or selection they carry. We always find the staff very helpful and friendly. If we have questions they always provide helpful advice. They have even kept all of our meat in freezer for us until we are ready to go back home to be sure it will not spoil by the time we get back. Even recommended where we could go to get dry ice if needed. We will continue to make the trip & gladly recommend them to anyone who asks. The meat is always fresh & has very little waste or fat. So having looked on Yelp for new deli options in the Chicago area, I stumbled upon this place. After reading a few reviews, I thought it would be worth the trip and my hunch was correct. Looked around for a bit, then I made a few selections... Potato salad... it's in a standup refrigerator. I wanted something to go along with the meats I was purchasing, so I decided to give this a try. Good stuff - slightly on the sweet side, but not too much. Better than I anticipated, especially since I didn't come here looking for salads. Corned beef... their "lean" option is $20 / lb., so I figured I'd try the "ordinary" corned beef before I invest the big bucks. Pretty good - went great with the rye bread they had there that was made by Tel Aviv Bakery on Devon. Bologna... fully flavored awesomeness. Some of the best I've ever enjoyed. Hot dogs... don't know yet - plan to break into those in another day or two - from what I've read, they're the best package hot dogs to be found in Chicago. Given my experience with what I've bought thus far, I believe it. There was a sign indicating that they did make sandwiches to go. The place itself is kind of interesting - totally utilitarian, no frills whatsoever. Staff was pleasant and helpful. One of the things that kind of cracked me up was after having read a few reviews and noticing how people from out of town come there. Well, there was a guy in the store when I was there and someone commented on all that he was holding... "I'm from Georgia and I came to stock up", he said. This store has been closed since October 11th for the Jewish holiday of sukkot. According to the store's answering machine, it looks like they will be reopening on the 24th of October. You may want to wait until then, and and it might be a good idea to call in advance before heading over. I guess I should have called before making the trip up there. I look forward to checking them out once they reopen. I have to give them four stars for having nitrate-free hot dogs, but I will revise it once I am finally able to visit the store. I noticed in the comments that Daniel M, an apparently fellow Gentile, complained that the store would be closed, presumably during certain Jewish holiday periods, witn no notice on the store's website. I grew up in a Jewish household of Southerners. That is, they ate fried chicken on the sabbath. And bacon with their morning brunches. Good stuff. In that vein (the being-a-non-kosher-Jew one) I swore up and down that I'd never find a tastier hot dog that Vienna Beef's. Certainly not an all-beef Kosher dog. Then, at a friend's place, I tried a grilled-to-blistered hot dog from Romanian... and my world was turned upside down. Best. Hot dogs. Ever. And I'm dogmatic about this. Romanian Kosher Sausage Co. is a little old building in Rogers Park with ancient signage and practically no ambiance. Walk on in, though, and you're struck by the most astoundingly wonderful smell of smoke and spices. Friendly (albeit a little inefficient) employees. Incredibly wonderful food. Highly recommend their hot dogs (they have nitrate-free ones now too!), beef sticks (who doesn't love a high-sodium snack?), smoked turkey, and extra lean corned beef. Be prepared to pay a bit of a premium since this is all Glatt kosher. Parking is easy in their side lot with simple access to Touhy. read more

I had some soft salami, hard salami, smoked turkey breast, hunter like sausages, a pastrami sandwich on a kaiser roll, cole slaw, and new pickles. The pastrami sandwich was very delicious, and at $3.50 a real bargain. The sandwich was very simple. Pastrami on one of those great hard crust kaiser rolls that you can only find in Chicago with only mustard as a condiment. Please don't ask for cheese. Its true kosher establishment. Later I tried a bite of a bagel sandwich that was made with a New York Bagel poppy seed bagel, Romanian turkey pastrami, soft salami, cole slaw, and Dijon mustard. What a heavenly combination. Also amazing is the hard salami. I had a few slices, and we decided that a kosher salami omelet would be a delicious breakfast creation. There is no ambience here what so ever. This is as plain and simple as you can get a butcher shop. In fact, it is kind of cold and stark. Ahhhh, but what treasures it conceals!!!! I popped in on a cold and rainy day (as opposed to a dark and stormy night). I had heard the tales and I was determined to find out for myself, if they were true. What I fould was utterly delicious pastrami, tender tantalizing corned beef, flavorful, practically perfect hot dogs and fresh, creamy yummy chopped liver. I also got some frozen kishke, which I haven't tried yet. Everything I tried was amazing (ok, so I wasn't nuts about the cole slaw, who cares?) I will be back again and again, I can feel it in my soul. To make things easier, they have a parking lot, so I am beyond thrilled. This is, without question, the best kosher butcher in Chicago. They make their own kosher sausages and salamis on the premises, and they're really exceptional. They also make their own corned beef briskets. I get the garlic sausages (which are like kielbasa). They also make their own kishka. My mother tells me that they used to make authentic kishka (if you don't know what that means, then you probably don't want to). This is no longer the case, and the kishka comes in a plastic, removable casing. It's still very good. Kosher meat is expensive, but there are definitely some deals to be had here. They run weekly specials that are often very good. Also, they have bone-in ribeye steaks for only $7.99 a pound, which is several dollars cheaper than at any other kosher market. The staff can be a bit abrupt, but Sharon at the cash register is always sunny, chatty and cheerful. read more

I am a 68 year old Gentile that has been enjoying the Salamis, Beef Sticks and Hot dogs since 1976, when I lived in Chicago. I moved to So Cal in early 1980s and have been putting Romanian products in my luggage on my bi-annual trips to Chicago. I found out several years ago that Romanian had started shipping Salamis and Beef Sticks so I satisfied my Kosher meat jones via parcel post. I have a couple of sons who are hooked on Romanian products and a couple of times a year they get a delivery from Clark St. Getting ready to place my Holiday order for me and the boys. For years I have been hearing about the Romanian from my neighbors and always see signs at the Hungarian advertising that they have "Romanian Sausages and Salami." I wound up hear due to the shortage of larger kosher turkeys for Thanksgiving. Apparently the process for making kosher turkeys (something to do with salt) makes poultry much more juicy and tasty- many cooking shows now recommend a kosher turkey for thanksgiving now. The Romanian was the only place I could find that would reserve a kosher turkey over 12 lbs. They were pricier than the Hungarian, Jewel or Trader Joe's but the price was well worth it. This year's turkey was the best I have ever had and unlike the Hungarian you won't be left plucking out feathers with a pliers. As everything looked great I wound up with the best pastrami I have ever had- moist and flavorful. I also got a few of their large hot dogs which were the best hot dogs ever and trust me I've been to all of the great hot dog places except hot dough's (I'm not waiting an hour for a hot dog). I'm waiting to cut open the hard salami once I finish the turkey. This place is pretty much a butcher and don't expect any ambiance. Went to this place in search of authentic kosher and found it, this place looks run down and no smiling faces in sight! First ordered 3lbs. Corned beef, 4lbs. Bologne, 3lbs. Salami, 6 packs hot dogs $120.00 (purchased to be divided amongst friends and family) The corned beef had lean meat on the top inside the package the thieves filled each package with fatty dried up ends (stuff that's suppose to be discarded)....long story short this place rips people off....I WILL HIGHLY RECOMMEND PEOPLE TO STAY AWAY FROM THIS DUMP! read more

Delicious four dollar pastrami sandwich. To-go sandwiches are few and basic, but they're exactly what you want when you're in the mood for mustard and meat on rye or kaiser. Very affordable. Let me preface this by saying: I do not like hot dogs. I do not like corned beef. I do not like pastrami or salami or any other cold sliced meats. However, I LOVE the Kosher dogs here and always reserve a special place in my stomach for at least one when they are served at parties.
