This place is definitely one of my favorite places to grab an Italian sub. For those that have never been, you walk in and take a ticket. You're called up by one of the butcher staff and put in your order. You follow them to the sub station and they start crafting your sandwich. I do wish you could make more customization to the sandwich but this place works in efficiency so I get it. I typically get the Italian or the spicy Italian sandwich. They have a lot of other great items as well. Their waygu beef sticks are incredible. Great selection of frozen meals, proteins of ever variety, domestic and imported grocery items. Such a neighborhood staple! First off, I was expecting basically a deli shop/butcher shop where you go up to the counter and order whatever meat you want to cook BUT this little gem is more than that! All the employees are so kind and helpful. When you walk in you'll find there's aisles full of pre-marinated meats/fish, pastas, condiments, and even fresh vegetables. The back area are all the butcher shop cuts where you can grab a ticket and order whatever meat/fish cut you want. We decided to stop in for their sandwiches which you can either order in person or through their online portal (it is a $2 surcharge to order online). The meat and cheese was sooo good in more sandwiches. We opted for the Italian (I don't like lettuce or tomatoes so I had neither in my sandwich) and the hot sandwich. Generally excellent quality meats and cheeses. That said, I was terribly disappointed by the encased meat they refer to as an "old fashioned wiener." I found the casing very tough; natural yes, but certainly not the sheep intestine claimed in their description. This place has been around 75 years!! I have never been to this meat market before. My mom has and was looking for garlic sausages and she knew they carried them. I was pleasantly surprised by their vast selection of everything you can think of! Beautiful dried meats, beef with amazing looking marbling, good looking poultry and fish. An amazing variety of pre cooked frozen foods!!! I saw one of my beef, stroganoff, lasagna, roast beef, and gravy, braised oxtails etc! They even carried pre made lumpia! I was in heaven!!!!!! They have a deli of course and you can get a sandwich made on the spot. Everything was exceptionally clean!!!!! For you dog owners they have homemade dog food that frozen in the coolers too. Good customer service! They were very attentive. Why the the three stars you ask?? My mom purchased two garlic sausages and smoked ribs. The guy behind the counter DIDN'T put on gloves. He just grabbed the meat with his bare hand. No gloves or nothing!!!! Is that a common practice here? Just ok. The pork chops not tender... tough. I cooked medium rare. The bone in strip. Tough. Cooked rare plus easy char. By the Chef at the restaurant ...Every meat I bought would need a marinade. MEAT HEAVEN! They have all kinds of cuts you can't find in grocery stores, including lots of veal choices. Smoked kielbasa is wonderful, and they have a lot of frozen prepared foods available. I have tried their gnocchi and meat ravioli - great for a quick-prep meal. I usually go mid-afternoon on a weekday to avoid crowds. People love this place, and it gets packed. Old fashion butcher shop. The service is very slow, but very personalized. All their meat is amazing, the Deli meat especially. Their bologna is homemade! Their sandwich meat is comparable in price to other stores but the quality is so much better. They've recently undergone a renovation that expanded their shopping section. While dry goods are a little more expensive , sometimes it's worth it to have the convenience of one stop shopping. In the renovation, they expanded to include sandwiches, made fresh for with their deli meats. Generally the sandwiches are on the more expensive side but they are also huge. The streaks are amazing. That said make sure you ask the butcher to wrap each steak individually unless you plan on making multiple cuts at the same time. I bought 4 T Bones Bone in ( not cheap) and 4 Ny Strips bone in and they packed them in two large wrappers. I didn't realize until I got home that they had done so. When I called to "complain " I was told that's how they always did w. Told them that wasn't true as it's the only place we buy our steaks. The person answering the phone we could drive back and get them rewrapped I asked if the could come and get them since total bill for steaks and other items came to almost $400.00 bucks. Went to visit family in CHI and found this market. What an absolutely great place. Thank goodness I do not live here or I would be twice the size. This is an old school meat market with fabulous offerings . They make all of the old style sausages, jerky, dogs, burgers and multiple prepared meals along with salads and fresh veggies. This is now my go-to place not just for meats but frozen dishes, fresh sandwiches and all kinds of unique sauces, jams and other condiments. The selection and freshness of their meat options is second to none. I'm now more inclined to buy a prime steak here and grilling it at home than spending 3x at a steakhouse. Do get a tomahawk for a special occasion. They are fantastic! Lastly, the service here is incredible. This small butcher has been around for over 70 years. I've only been here a few times, but the quality of their stuff has been great. The one and only time I made baby back ribs, I bought them from here. They were delicious. I'm also pretty sure that I've purchased deli meat here, and they have a small grocery selection too that includes some pantry staples and fresh vegetables. For Thanksgiving 2020, like all rational people, I stayed home for the holiday instead of going to a restaurant or a friend's house like I typically would. So a couple weeks before the holiday, I ordered a turkey breast via their website and opted for pickup. They do offer curbside pickup, but that's an extra $10 which I balked at paying, so instead I used their pickup window (keeping my streak, since March, of not entering a building that's not my own home intact!). Along the Cornelia side of the building, they have a walk-up window through which you can purchase your order. I was pretty disappointed, though, that the staff were not wearing masks. At least, not the staff running the window. Because of that, I can't give them more than two stars; it's simply irresponsible during a pandemic and at a time when cases of a highly virulent disease are at record highs in the city. I may consider ordering from here again, simply because I struggled to find other places that would let me pay for the order in full online and pick it up either curbside or without entering the business, but that will forever leave a bad taste in my mouth. read more

Paulina Market could be the best butcher / meat market / specialty goods / deli in the Midwest! That's saying a mouthful, but well earned. I've used this establishment for three of the four items listed above. The "deli" part has been the only thing I have not bought at Paulina; that is until today. Yes, we bought our lamb here today, and our canned beans and some beef Jerky. All of these mixed bag of items are our usual stop at this wonderful market. But, today at 1:00 p.m., at Paulina we totally forgot to eat lunch; and we were hungry. So we moseyed on over to their deli section and bought a pint of their turkey salad. We got two plastic forks, some napkins and mineral water and had a picnic in our car. Now here's what transpired: Everything these nice people do is just superior to what any other mortal can do. That's what we (as loyal customers) expect. But, when both of us took our first fork full of our turkey salad, well, it was shocking! Unlike any salad, including Tuna, we've ever had. Everything they put into this spread just completely worked. My wife hates raw onions; in every and all varieties. But today, she appreciated the sweetness the onions brought to this turkey salad. Now I know what your thinking; how can this fool make a big "to do" over a turkey salad? It's probably the most "pedestrian" spread you could make a sandwich out of. I would be thinking the same thing also. That is, until you took a taste of this magical concoction. This one action would flip you, like it flipped us. Well, enough said! I was searching for a 20lb+ turkey and spiral cut ham for Christmas. Calling around a number of places, Paulina's was the only one with both. The turkey was fantastic but the ham was only OK, it was spiral cut but not the sugar ham I was hoping for so I'll go somewhere else next year for that family tradition. It was easy to order online. Coming for the pick-up, I didn't see any free parking but there were close by meter spots for cheap. The staff was very quick to ask if I needed help when I went to the pre-order line so I I was in and out in two minutes. Buyer beware!! Due to the popularity of Paulina Market, on December 23rd I bought a full loaf, vacuum sealed package of Leberkäse to cook for my New Years Eve guests. To my surprise when I unsealed the package, the Leberkäse had changed color and had a rotten smell. When I called today (Store closed weekends), I was told that there was nothing that they could do to help me with my problem. The man on the phone just told me that it was unfortunate that it went bad (even still sealed in their packaging!). Disappointed to say the least. I'm convinced that you can find any type of meat here (even the "exotics"). If it's not here, it won't be found anywhere else in Chicago. I was on a mission to find Oxtails as the Jewel, Mariano's, Whole Foods, and Trader Joe's near me did not have them. Came in here and bought a "ring of oxtails". One ring contains about 7 pieces (3 huge, 4 small) for the plump sum of $19.79 ($20.24 after tax). Ehhhh, that price point gives me pause, but oxtails are no longer "poor people meat" so I'm not surprised. For comparison, I will say that after I left here I saw some at Cermak Fresh Market for $6.99/lb. Not as big as these at Paulina Market, but a good alternative. When you enter, grab a number right by the door. This was my first time here and I unknowingly walked right past it. One of the butchers was kind enough to point out where it was and helped me then without making me go back and grab a number. So kind! And that is what I loved most about my time here, incredibly friendly!!!! You don't feel rushed and the butchers are very kind to slow down and answer any of your questions. I was informed that they make their own sausages in house and several other things - so I definitely plan to return! The parking situation here was surprisingly easy for a Saturday afternoon. There isn't a parking lot (street parking only), but right by the store there is an area you can pull up in and put your flashers in while running into the store.
