Romero's is one of the many Mexican/Southwestern style restaurants in Pueblo we haven't visited. So, we figured we should give it a try. We came early (we're old). There were only another couple in the place. Our server, a young woman, was pleasant and efficient. In the otherwise empty place, our order came almost instantly. It's clean and cheerful inside. A Mexican telenovella was playing muted on a TV screen. We ordered a specialty, the 'Rancho Grande'. It was a flat sopaipilla with meat, beans, cheese, tomatoes and onions. smothered in green chili. Lettuce topped it. The 'medium' chili was tasty, just the right hot. The serving was adequate, but not generous. My wife felt the meat was a bit sparse. In all, it was a competent dish. Romero's is, apparently famous for its burritos, particularly it's Monster Burrito. (I don't know if one gets a T-shirt for eating it) So, if one is looking for a decent local place, a bit out of the way, one should give Romero's a try. read more

I ordered a slopper just out of curiosity, not bad. Looked like a deconstructed hamburger with chili on it. I have NEVER had such poor service, anywhere EVER. The food was slow in coming. It took 15 minutes just to get a menu. The people at the table next to us got up and walked out. There seemed to be a lot of waitstaff but lacked organization. I will never go back ! When my wife went to pay the bill, our waitress was on her cell phone on a personal call, swiped the credit card, handed my wife the receipt to sign and never bothered to even look up. Foodies. Great customer service. The restaurant is known for its chili sauces. We ordered the Grande Platter to split and the lunch special with 2 tacos, rice, and beans. While there is a LOT of food, both plates were very short on flavor. The chicken was bland and salt made it better. The tamales were the best out of both dishes we ordered. I travel a few times a year to Pueblo to visit family. We've passed this joint several times before so we decided to eat here. Everyone ordered what they wanted and they LOVED their food. Monster burrito, dip, tostada, tacos, enchiladas. I ordered the beef stuffed sopapilla. It was truly bland, raw dough and barely there ground beef. Man this hurts to have to write this not so good review for Romero's. Food isn't terrible from point but some in my breakfast club don't like the chili. The staff is friendly and they seem to have a big to go orders fir the burritos. It's the building itself. The women's restroom was a mess the toilets and sink still aren't repaired the running water was like this the last we were there and only gotten worse. The restaurant feels like it's yelling fir repairs and a modern look the dining is super dark lighting is awful. Fresh paint job with a brightness and rearranging the trophy case etc would be a huge plus. read more

We called in an order and everything we ordered on the menu was unavailable. We ended up getting chicken tacos, which were more like lettuce tacos with extremely stale taco shells. My wife and I tried this place for breakfast. The fare is Mexican. They do a unique thing with the stuffed breakfast sopapilla, or at least I've never seen it done elsewhere. They basically stuff a sopapilla with eggs, potatoes, ham, etc... and smother it in green chili and cheese - very good. My wife had the breakfast burrito and was also quite pleased. I will say that the sopapilla gets soggy quickly so eat fast and don't try to save it for tomorrow unless you're an aficionado of soggy bread. The service was good. We were greeted and seated promptly despite the parking lot being full to overflowwing. If I were to nit pick, they were VERY busy and our waiter was also running that particular shift and was a bit distracted but very nice. The place was very clean including the bathrooms and the decor was lovely. I'd been in the building a few years back when it was Chevy's and they really chanced the look and feel of the place. This place is simply great...don't believe me, then check out their awards, chieftain reviews, or even the praise from President Obama when he stopped here. I ordered the stuffed sopapilla. It was loaded with chicken and cheese, and then smothered. They offer their green chiles in mild, spicy, or half/half. I went spicy, and it was worth it with rich flavor. The menu had tacos, fajitas, burritos, burgers, and combination plates. If you are in south Pueblo, then it is worth the stop. read more

I have been here several times now. Most of the Mexican food I find in Pueblo is bland. I am a travel nurse and a foodie. I eat out a LOT. The food here is very good.. Not great, but very good. The hot green chili is far better than the average you can find and it actually has some heat. I did not care for the slopper, as it had a burned and bland taste, and the accompanying French fries were undercooked and soggy. The Monster Burrito was great... I actually have ordered that several times. The size of it varies based on who is cooking, but still tasted good topped with extra green chili and some of the salsa. The chips I get are the blanco chips made with white corn tortillas... they cook them fresh when you order them, so they are worth the extra. The salsa is borderline too hot, which is actually a nice twist for Pueblo. Taste is great, but the level of garlic will keep you vampire free for a day or two. All in all... This has become my go-to place when I want good comfort food. The service varies but is generally good. Prices are a bit high, especially since you have to pay for the chips. Overall, I recommend trying it. read more

Their claim to fame is the green chili and one time visit from President Barack Obama. I, sadly, was disappointed in both the chili and President Barack Obama! The chili was not hot or spicy just bland and peppery. I gave 3-stars because our waitress did a great job and checked back regularly. This used to be the best Pueblo Mexican food in town. I used to go there every week. The last 4 visits ( giving them the benefit of doubt) were less than acceptable in cuisine and service. The food was served cold and it would seem that the new waitstaff could use a little trading from the older staff as far as courtesy goes. The price increase does not reflected in the service received. Might try again in a year/ wait and see what changes. So much for MR CHILIE. I travel a lot for work, and my favorite food is Mexican. While I enjoy chains and "Tex-mex" style, I'm always looking for good, authentic Mexican food. This restaurant was highly recommended by the locals, so I was excited to try it. I sat down at a table and was greeted and served a drink very quickly. A different server came to take my order and was friendly enough. I ordered huevos rancheros, which is described on the menu as 2 eggs any style, potatoes, beans and green chili, served with toast or tortilla. The food came out quickly, but the only discernible shape on the plate was the little pile of unseasoned cubed hash brown potatoes. The beans, eggs, and green chili were a runny, sloppy mess. The plate resembled a shallow bowl of tortilla soup with potatoes on the side. The chips were bagged nacho chips (probably tostitos) and the salsa was pretty tasty. In fact, the chips and salsa was the best part of the entire meal. The atmosphere was decent, service was pleasant, and price was reasonable. That's the only redeeming quality of this place. Otherwise, the food alone would get one half of a star. While I haven't tasted the rest of the menu, lots of the pictures look to be similar to my breakfast. A big plate of slop with far too much sauce and not enough texture. This would be a perfect place for geriatrics, or folks who for medical reasons are required to drink their food through a straw. I couldn't recommend this place. There are too many good Mexican food places in Pueblo to waste your money here. read more

I was pleasantly surprised at just how good the food was here. To begin with, we had great service--friendly, funny, and our waitress was working her butt off to serve. I had the giant bean and chicharrón smothered burrito with hot green chile. Now, I'm pretty picky about my green chile and I thought theirs was quite spicy with good flavor. The beans inside were DELICIOUS and it was chock full of chicharrones. The only downside, and why I gave it 4 stars, was the huge pile of shredded iceberg on top, less chile than I expected, and minimal cheddar. But, really, next time I'll know to specify what I want. My boyfriend had the slopper and he raved about it, especially the hand patted burger. The iced tea we had was fresh brewed and all the food being served around us looked just as tempting. It is really hard to say anything bad about this place. Has a mexican diner like feel with some aztec art on the walls and ALOT of family history and community surrounding their craft. The original owners knew what it meant to out love into their chili and it shows. They offer a vegetarian green chili that I consider the green gold of Pueblo. I usually take home a quart after my meal. The main cook now shows his passion in the back towards what he does. The family is down to earth but shows pride in what they do. I always love seeing the pics of Obama and Carlos Santana when I come in. Obama looked pretty happy to have some good green chile. The tortillas are amazing. I could eat the huevos Americano every meal for the rest of my life. Really great prices too and the girls always like to make my baby laugh. This place is truly a gem and feels like part of the heart beat that is steel city. The green chili is probably the blood that flows through the heart!
