I want to start by saying that the food that the chefs prepare and serve here is really quite good. The restaurant should be proud of the quality of meal that they bring to the dinner table.
The reason that I'm giving it 3 stars, and not a higher rating, is solely because of price / portion size / perceived value. The cooking is really impressive, and if spending $35+ pp US / $700 MX is no problem to you, then you'll probably be happy with your visit to Romina. But for the $20 US / $400 MX that I ended up spending at Romina, I would've much rather gone somewhere else.
I arrived without a reservation, and the host was friendly and proactive in trying to find me a table. I found the actual space rather unpleasant. A fairly small room, very low ceilings, seemingly no windows, underground. The decor of the room seemed fairly hodgepodge and overly busy. Not a place that I would want to visit regularly. It all felt rather claustrophobic.
I wasn't particularly hungry, so I told the waitress that I simply wanted one of the pasta dishes and a coke. I sensed some annoyance on her part after she heard my annoyance, the "why I am bothering to serve this guy when the tip is going to be so paltry" annoyance. In many many ways, she could have been warmer and friendlier.
I had the goat cheese ravioli with orange, butter sauce, and sage. It was a fascinating almost pinkish color, with a notable citrus flavor, understandably. It was definitely a good dish. But it was basically three regular-sized ravolis for $245 MX ($12.50 US). Simply put, in this city, there are much heartier, more filling dishes for $245 pesos. With the Coke / glass of water / bread / tax / tip, it came out to $400 pesos. Had I known that the portion was going to be so small, I would not have gone there. If you do go there and want to leave full, be prepared to order more than just a pasta dish, and thus be prepared to spend $700 MX+ per person. If money isn't much of a concern, then you'll likely leave here quite pleased. But if you're looking for a good value, this is not the place to visit. read more
