This review is pretty much for the 'hot cocoa'I had! It was divine!! Although it was pre-made (I was skeptical), it hit the spot. This isn't your regular uber milky HC, with a hint of cocoa powder. It's an immersion into pure chocolate heaven. If you've had Max Brenner's hot chocolate and liked it, you will enjoy this. While it's not as rich as Max Brenner's (which is definitely a plus sometimes), it is still rich in chocolate flavor. Not too milky not too watery! I'm from Pittsburgh where we have Sardis Candies, that is exactly what Romolos reminded me of. As soon as you walk in you will literally feel like a kid in a candy store, overcome by the amazing aroma of chocolate and coffee. The store is broken up into three parts: The cafe side which sells coffee, ice cream, cannolis and cupcakes. The gift shop in the middle with kids toys, coffee cups and trinkets. And lastly, the chocolate store side! Everything chocolate covered you can imagine you can find here. There's peanuts, truffles, roses, oreos, sponge Candies, and so much more! We got truffles, chocolate covered cashews and a small box of assorted candy from the chocolate store and everything was spectacular. From the Cafe side we got coffee an my daughter got a strawberry sherbert. they had a wide variety of both to chose from, even a blueberry decade coffee. The only disappointment was we visited on a Sunday and they do not do bakery items on Sunday so we were not able to try their cupcakes. This place is amazing. The chocolates are the best! I have had many chocolates from many high end places and this one beats all. It's so creamy and smooth and it melts in your mouth. They have such a large variety also. The first time I was in there it was like an episode of I Love Lucy. They all wear hats and uniforms and you can see them making the chocolate. It's a good pick-me-up place to stop by after a whole day baking on the beach. --chocolate chop-- The best thing about Romolo is the free chocolate samples in the chocolate shop. During my visit they had normal milk chocolate and sponge milk chocolate on the sample plate. I've tried both. 4 aisles of chocolate. There seems to be only two "types", milk chocolate being the majority of inventory, and dark chocolate (very little selection). The milk chocolate doesn't seem to vary in its cocoa percentage; just lots of various shapes (frogs, trains, cars) and inserts (almond, nuts, fruits). Both milk and dark chocolate are very very sweet, verge on the edge of being too sweet. Even dark chocolate, I'd expect it to taste a tad bitter, like those 70 - 80% cocoa dark you get from world market or whole foods. But Romolo's doesn't give a hint of bitterness at all. I bought the milk chocolate covered grapes. I understand it's a local favorite. The customer in front of me told us it's "very very good" and that's what she was buying. Honestly, I don't get the hype. The grape is fresh grape, not raisin. So it's juicy and watery. And it doesn't go well with the exterior chocolate texture, which is very dense. Now if it's dried cherry and chocolate then I'd say they go well, being equally dense in texture and sweetness. They were out to stock on that flavor. We asked the staff if milk chocolate is their specialty. She said it's only because that's what the customers have been buying. If customers are buying more dark chocolate, then they would make more of it. So it looks like it's a local market preference. --Ice cream shop-- We had milk chocolate (frog prince), peanut butter chocolate, and mint chocolate chips. Ice cream-wise, Jeni's is better. Hands down. The chocolate flavor in the ice cream isn't very chocolaty. Tasted like they just added some cocoa powder to ice cream. Tasted like something you'd expect to get from food court or street vendor. Sweet goodness, yes. Gourmet, no. I'd reserve that word for Jeni's. And Mitchell's, maybe. But you see, that's the paradox. It is a chocolate shop. I'd expect it's chocolate to be gourmet. I'd expect the chocolate to be at least as good as what I can get from trader joe, whole foods, world market. I'd expect the chocolate ice cream as good as Jeni's. And they aren't. Not close. Hence the slight let down. -- I love chocolate and ice cream and consume a lot of them, so that's not the problem. Very cute family-owned and operated chocolate shop with handmade sweets. Located near Presque Isle State Park, not only is there the chocolate shop, but also the Cocoa Café offering signature hot chocolate, coffee, and ice cream. I love their truffles, which have a decadent ganache center and a double coating of either milk or dark chocolate. My first experience was in it's purest form with no frills-plain ol' milk chocolate. Except it wasn't just plain old-it was rich, yet light, and decadent. They have cute novelties like the chocolate CD I purchased one day. They also ship and make great gifts! Romolo is such a fancy smancy place where the employees wear those giant white chef toques--emphasis on GIANT! I know this place is known for their chocolate, but I was really craving some ice cream after driving around Erie all day in the summer heat. One side of the shop is dedicated to coffee and ice cream, while the other side is for chocolate. Romolo is clean, bright and modern with great service. There are outside seating surrounded by a beautiful garden for those looking for a place to wind down and relax. Don't forget to snap a picture with the chocolate covered fish. The ice cream was truly AMAZING. For a place so fancy, I was shocked how cheap the ice cream was. Approximately $10 for 4 waffle cones packed to the core with deliciously creamy goodness. You pay for the ice cream by the scoop, but trust me...just one scoop is enough because their scoops are MEGA SCOOPS (just like their toques). I had the chance to try Nutty Coconut and Pralines Caramel. I was extremely satisfied with both choices and highly recommend these two flavors. The ice cream wasn't too sweet, which was a plus for me since I'm not a huge fan of super sweet desserts. The only thing I have to complain about was the parking situation. The parking lot in front of Romolo is huge, but it was used as a lot for some special event across the street. As a Romolo customer, I had to find parking in another lot and then walked over. I thought that was an unnecessary inconvenience. Other than that, my experience at Romolo was completely positive. I have a vendor that introduced me to Romolo so when I went to Erie I had to stop in (and stock up) for my favorite -- lemon blueberry. To top off the experience was a fantastic woman behind the counter -- full of personality. They have a great assortment and everything is good. I saw some reviews about the cafe/coffee shoppe that lowered the overall rating, but to be fair, Romolo's represents chocolate first and foremost while their coffee beverages and ice creams are a sideline. Noticed also the comments about poor customer service, which I have not experienced; but customer service does not take away from the quality of their chocolate. It's honestly decent chocolate. Absolutely love this place. Has a great ambiance, amazing chocolate, but evenly better is their caramel apple cider and hot chocolate. Talk about chocoholic ecstasy no doubt. They have a lot of cute trinkets, which in my opinion are overpriced, but its fun to look around at all they have. The only reason this place isn't getting a 5 star is because I've never been fond of the service we have received. Especially because my xc coach would take our team here once a week and they were never very friendly...normally you build relationships with regular customers so its a little disappointing. When you do try to talk or joke around with someone on the staff, they just look at you like a deer in the headlights, and its like your talking to a wall. Romolo is huge and has some extended hours for a chocolate shop. I was surprised to see they stay open until 10 PM some nights. All the chocolate was excellent and the prices were great. Really neat place, really amazing service and chocolates. I walked into this place, was immediately impressed by the real candy chefs and full display of custom truly hand made chocolates. We just had breakfast so I wasn't that hungry, but we ended up with about 5 pounds of chocolate and I wanted to try the cashew dark chocolate which was absolutely amazing. My wife also ordered a fresh latte which she was immediately impressed by. Impressing my wife with lattes is not easy because we are from the Pacific Northwest and Stumptown is a pretty stiff standard, I tried it as well and it was very tasty. It also had a Madagascar vanilla which was very delightful. If you really enjoy amazingly yummy and unique candies and chocolates made by real chocolate chefs, which you can actually see, go here! I have to start with this place is beautiful with cheerful workers and wonderful chocolate. That being said, my wife noticed they had ice cream. My wife is an ice cream fanatic. We've had all kinds of ice cream and she has even invented an ice cream flavor for Ben & Jerry's. So, to say it plainly, we know our ice cream. The ice cream we were sold there is terrible. I love chocolate, so I visit Romolo as often as I can. Their chocolate is amazing, but what is even better? The staff there. I have always been met with a pleasant welcome and incredible service. The store is great, as well with really nice teas and some other fun finds for sale. The cafe side is my real go-to, with excellent coffees and a changing variety - I have never been disappointed. If you were wondering, "I wonder if this person also loves ice cream?" Of course I do! It's like Romolo Chocolates was created with me in mind...most of my favorites: loose leaf tea, bold and smooth coffee, dreamy chocolate, and creamy delicious ice cream. I have had at least half of their flavors and have never had a complaint. It is fantastic. And believe me, I know my ice cream. With all this in mind, today I tried 1/2 and 1/2 cocoa and coffee. HOLD THE PHONE! Every sip ended with a "Wow." Fantastic flavor, and so smooth and fresh tasting. You can distinctly taste both the cocoa and coffee. You must try it! ***DON'T COMPLAIN AT ROMOLOS ERIE PA*** Please take a minute to read this, especially if you care at all about customer service or go to ROMOLOS in Erie, PA. I was just getting off my long overnight shift at work, and was going to visit my mother in law who has been ill. I wanted to get her a pick-me-up surprise, and I was happy to see ROMOLOS, my favorite chocolate shop was open early. I told my in laws i would be there around 9, so this was perfect. My mother in law loves chocolate covered strawberries, so I began looking for them at the counter. It was 8 am, and I was the first customer to walk in. The lady asked me what I needed and I told her, and she explained that the only ones were day old, but they were good and would only be softer than the fresh ones, and were offered at a discount. I didn't know what the discount was as there was no posting, but since I've had their strawberries a thousand times (they are my celebration guilty pleasure) i figured it would be fine. She told me that fresh wouldn't be ready for another hour and a half. I was tired after a long night and they were expecting me, so i elected for the day old strawberries. I picked up a couple items for my family and a couple extra strawberries for myself and my husband and daughter. I left the store and started on my way. I was excited and got one of the strawberries out and took a bite. At first, i just noticed the chocolate, but after I got past that I noticed a rotten taste. Not only that, it was warm, as if not refrigerated. The strawberry had gone bad and I had to spit it out. I was unsettled about it and was planning to throw them away, but I called my husband and told him and he thought that I should take them back. I am a very non confrontational person, but I decided to call them. The girl on the phone seemed nervous and didn't really know how to handle the situation. I turned around and was on my way back, and while on the phone, she explained that the strawberries sometimes do that once they are second day. She put me on hold several times in the few minutes I spoke with her, and i eventually told her i was pulling in the parking lot, and would like to exchange them for fresh ones, and I was happy to take half the amount of strawberries. When I walked into the store she rushed over (I can only assume it was her i do not know for sure, but she had the same nervous mannerisms and quietness about her as the girl on the phone). She asked me to wait while she went to talk to someone. I waited for over 10 minutes and she came and said the person we were waiting for was at a meeting and would be out shortly. A few minutes later a shorter statured man walked out with a smirk on his face, with the girl, and said "we aren't going to do anything about this. I'm telling you right now." I felt a little speechless as he went on. "We aren't going to do anything about this. We pick the berries every day, this happens with them after a day, you shouldn't get day old berries as a gift, thats your fault." I was a little dumbfounded... So its NORMAL for strawberries to be rotten after 1 day? I started to say something and he cut me off, going on about how the berries are soft after 1 day. I said "ok... But I don't think its normal for them to be rotten. The one i bit into was not edible." He spoke really fast and cut me off several times and said "we don't give refunds here. If you want, I'll exchange your strawberries for other day old strawberries, and I'm never selling day old berries to you again" I said, "I'm not interested in more day old strawberries sir." He said "well then we're done here." He walked away, and I said to the lady, "if this is the case, I would like to return everything else that I purchased today. Can you please wait a minute while I get it from my car?" She nodded and I walked outside. Before I got to my car, i hear "ma'am! Ma'am!" I turn around and it is the man again, calling me to say "we don't take returns here." I start to walk back as he says "if i were you I would take the swap out of the berries, and I will never sell you day old berries again." I was back in the store and I said, "no, sir, i really do not want more day old berries," and before I could say anything else, he cuts me off again and angrily says "then forget it!" And starts to walk away again. Then he turns around and looks at the lady and says "ya know what? Refund her for everything" and then turns to me and says "and do not ever come back here again. I will not ever sell to you again." I said "this is very bad customer service." He replied, "no this isn't bad customer service, its a bad customer. I've had people all over the world come here and say how good it is, you are too fussy, and I don't want you to come back again. From now on you can shop down the street." I dont have enough characters to finish the story - but you get the gist. I will never go there again! read more
