Great place by the water to grab lunch or dinner!…read more We came for lunch and tried the empanadas. The vegetarian one was our favorite, and had great flavors! The ginger limeade was also very tasty, and we grabbed a bottle of it on our way out to enjoy the rest of the day! They even gave use cups of ice and lids/straws for the road, very helpful. Nice and laid back place, you order at the counter and then they bring out the food. No rush, nice to sit and relax and enjoy the view!

So, I say all this to say - make sure to make a reservation if you'd like to avoid a long wait &/or disappointment with there not being a table available. We were extremely lucky to have gotten a table with a relatively short wait on a busy evening. Likely because it was within the last hour of the restaurant's opening!! Now - on to the best part... the FOOD! The creamy pumpkin soup with an arepa was really delicious!!! Full of flavour, prepared with passion and love and I would definitely go back for more! For our mains, my sister and I decided to both have the seasonal fresh caught fish with Puerto Rican yellow rice - YUMMMM! My only regret is that the fish was not big enough... I would have loved MORE! Overall this was a great dining experience.

This joint saved me…read more It was the middle of the day. The sun had been beating down on me. We just rented our scooter (I had to run up the hill a couple of times to get my driver's license and was totally dehydrated & hot). It was lunch time, and we were told Tito Bloque is a good local restaurant to hit up. The town of Esperanza is tiny, so I thought the directions would not be hard to follow, but we managed to get lost. This eatery was literally within a neighborhood, and looked like it was in the porch of someone's house. Needless to say, it was hard to find, and required us to ask for more directions. By the time we were here, my lame butt was ready to pass out (dehydration is a son of gun when you're in a tropical locale!). But we made it. We grabbed a table. Looked at menus. And first things first, I had to hydrate: with a can of ice cold Medalla cerveza (Puerto Rican beer). Maybe not as good as water, but this brew certainly flipped my mood to the positive. For food, I saw lots of basic home-cooked options (seafood, chicken, steak, etc.). I went with the steamed chicken. It came with a very basic salad (meaning, mostly lettuce). But the chicken certainly filled the spot with its juicy tenderness. And when all is said and done, the two cans of Medalla also made all well. This place looked to be run by an elderly couple. The guy mainly lounged on a hammock hanging inside the open-air patio. The woman was in the kitchen behind the bar, and also came out to take orders and serve us. They both weren't very talkative to me (the gringo). But as I paid, I noticed some photos of snowy mountains and elk. I asked about them, and the lady said they are from family in Oregon---I told them I was from Washington, and she lit up. She was nice and sweet. While here, I saw some locals pull up in a jeep. The old guy hopped out of the hammock and chatted with the guy. He then went to the back and came back out with a bag of food. So yeah, if you want take-away, you are set here. All in all, if you want to bypass the humdrum/crowded restaurants on the malecon (waterfront), venture a couple of blocks inland and have a meal like a local.

On an island where many transplants from the states open up tourist restaurants to attract the lazy traveler, Tito's caters to the journeyman that wants the vibrant experience of the local life. Its a small, open restaurant run by an old Tito and his wife, who both cook and clean and eat with their guests. If you dine here make sure to speak with Tito, who may or may not be eating a few tables over with his wife, the cook. During our visit to Tito Bloque's, we were offered some gigantic avocado and fresh candied mangoes, for what seemed just making conversation. This is what it feels like to eat like the locals.

We were seated right away with friendly staff . We ordered fruit juice (mango and watermelon) and got them right away. They were excellent and super cold (maybe too much ice and not enough drink). We don't eat a lot suchi but we thought both the rainbow rolls and Buddha rolls were solid. BBQ platter-ribs were outstanding!!! Mac and cheese was okay, I would not order again.
