We went without a reservation on Xmas eve. Tin box was recommended by a local. Suchi and slow cooked meats don't typically go together and here they are actually separate kitchens. We were seated right away with friendly staff . We ordered fruit juice (mango and watermelon) and got them right away. They were excellent and super cold (maybe too much ice and not enough drink). Boxsalad--one of the few salads we saw on a menu in the island. It was outstanding. Fresh greens and perfectly toasted pine nuts and a mango vinaigrette. We don't eat a lot suchi but we thought both the rainbow rolls and Buddha rolls were solid. BBQ platter-ribs were outstanding!!! Mac and cheese was okay, I would not order again. Slaw was good and pulled pork was great. Corn is a hard no. Chicken was okay (best we've had in the island). Pork taco plate was very good. Food was meh and service was slow, even for island time. We had a large group with 3 separate tables. We all ordered at the same time. It was aggravating that they got their apps and main courses before we got any food at all. My girlfriend and I were the last to be served and it took about an hour and a half! I ordered, the spare ribs with mac & cheese and the coleslaw. The ribs were cold. They were very fatty as well so they were a bit of a disappointment. The mac & cheese was just weird, kind of mushy and a very small portion. The coleslaw was just OK. My girlfriend ordered the pork platter. The meat was decent, but nothing to write home about. It was aggravating watching literally everyone else in our party getting all of their food, many with the same entrees, but we sat there waiting an extra half an hour. From Hero to Zero in 48 hours!!! Such a disappointment and waste. After a rather pleasant experience at TinBox with our group of 9, we decided to come back on Sunday night for our last diner on the island. We were only offered a 7:45PM slot which was fine with us. When we arrived, the place was packed and while it took a long time for the shorthanded staff to get our mainly sushi order, we were confident we would have a great time. Two hours later, after only receiving a third of our order, the waitress came to our table and basically told us that the sushi kitchen had run out of rice, eel, tuna and basically every ingredient for the rest of our order. Because they basically waited until both the kitchens were in fact closed, we couldn't order anything at all and had to leave around 9;45PM with half our table not having received any food..... why they could jot figure out way before that they could not fulfill our order and give us an opportunity to order something else from the BBQ kitchen is beyond me. We would have happily ordered something else pork tacos and anything for that matter but they waited until they had closed their kitchens to let us know leaving us hungry with absolutely no option to get food anywhere else on the island at 10PM on a Sunday. To add insult to injury, our waitress seemed pissed at us, was absolutely not apologetic and did not even offer to comp anything that we had been served up to that point. The least they could have done would have been to comp us anything but I guess they didn't value a group of 9 dinners. Extremely disappointing and would absolutely not recommend that restaurant based on that experience. Issue happen, we get it but how you treat your customers when something like this happens make a huge difference. Tinbox, you should have done a LOT better in handling the situation. Oh and by the way: - "fresh salmon" is NOT smoke salmon - "mango sushi" does require actual mango in the sushi - Surimi is NOT "fresh crab" From Hero to Zero in 48 hours. Extremely disappointing experience at TinBox in Vieques. We had a reservation at 7:45 PM and didn't leave until 9:50 PM, after waiting over an hour and a half for our food. By 9:40 PM, after only half of our order had been served, the waitress came over and told us they had run out of rice, which meant that the rest of our food could not be made, including sushi. We were also told they were out of eel and several other ingredients. To make matters worst case he menu had false advertisement it said many things on the sushi menu were fresh but most of our sushi was fresh at all . After telling us they were out of rice, the waitress then added that the kitchen was closed, and that they could not serve us any additional food whatsoever. This information was given way too late, after making us wait nearly two hours, and without offering us the option to reorder or choose alternatives earlier. The waitress was also rude and dismissive and condescending, which only added to the frustration. Overall, we left having barely eaten, after waiting two hours, with poor communication, missing ingredients, incorrect menu items, and unacceptable service. This experience was incredibly disappointing and not what you expect from a restaurant with reservations. read more

Tin Box is an experience. It has those "island vibes" on the drive in, the open air seating, and the mountain/ garden setting. Odd combination of sushi and BBQ menus, along with 10 or so cocktail options. The drinks were pretty good but not as strong as some places we've been, at $10 each. Bacon appetizer was a good choice. Bacon on the thicker side with some good sauce that made the lettuce below taste great too. Sushi- el gordito tempura battered roll was very good. Hearty amounts of wasabi and ginger with chopsticks and small bowls for soy sauce made this a great sushi experience. BBQ- trio platter with chicken, ribs, and pulled pork. All good. Not the best bbq ever but solidly good, and I wished we had some sauce to add ourselves, but I imagine it's the best bbq you are getting on the island. The southern slaw was refreshing. The corn bread was very sweet but good, definitely had a coconut island flavor going on. Hush puppies were dry and could be skipped. All in all this was a good dinner and worked well for my partner and I since I like sushi and he doesn't. Would return for sushi or when we are tired of fish and fried food elsewhere. read more

We were told on the phone to arrive by 8pm. We got there at 7:40 and were seated immediately. Our waitress right off the bat told us of a large number of things which they were already out of (so many that I lost track). I had wanted fish for dinner and the first three things I wanted were unavailable. Yet we managed to order two sushi entrees. 15 min later the waitress comes back to inform us that there is no sushi left and we had to reorder. It was bad enough that we couldn't eat what we wanted but now we were made to feel rushed to get an order in. Way to totally kill what had been a good vibe upon sitting down. The food which we did order was unmemorable. Here's a tip to the restaurant: IF YOU DIDNT HAVE SO MANY ITEMS ON YOUR MENUS AND PERHAPS HAD MORE BASIC INGREDIENTS THEN MAYBE YOU WOULDNT HAVE CRANKY CUSTOMERS. TRY A SMALLER MENU BUT WITH SPECIALS. People understand that specials run out. read more

A mixed bag for vegetarians/vegans, but with a few tweaks could be really great. First the pros: -Super cute atmosphere. -The tofu skewers were really good - great vegan option. -The tofu sushi roll was also really good, although could maybe be sliced thinner for more pieces that are a little easier to eat, but not a major deal. The cons (and suggestions!): -The veggie tacos were awful. Literally just salad in a shell. Would suggest adding something - you could add tofu which you already have for the skewers, or you could do something else like sauteed mushrooms. Whatever you choose, if you're just going to put some lettuce in a shell, you shouldn't even offer veggie tacos. Seriously, better not to serve them than to offer what were basically salad tacos. Not good. -TAP WATER. This place doesn't give you tap water. It is not pleasant to be eating a meal without a drink, and if you're conscious of the environment and don't want to buy bottles then you're kind of stuck. It seems like basic kindness to your customers to give them tap water. With these few tweaks this could go from a good to a great place for vegetarians in Vieques. Thanks for considering! read more

I wanted to love this place. The location is great and the vibe is fantastic...but at least on our visit, the food and service did not keep up. We were seated near the time the hostess said we would be. The server was friendly as she gave us the news that several items were sold out or would take hours to be served. We ordered assuming that the other items were running at normal serving pace. We were wrong. Our drinks came quickly and those were good, but our food came out 1 hour and 45 minutes later. And it was mediocre. Ribs were tough and lacked flavor. Salad was a pile of lettuce with some watermelon wedges and nearly no dressing, goat cheese or bacon. Essentially water in another form. I can recommend the fries and corn bread. I think this must have been an off night but management handled it so poorly, I cannot recommend a visit. read more

Visited the restaurant with my boyfriend tonight for the first time and also the last time. The mosquitos were bothering us so we asked if they could give us some bug repellent. They gave us an empty bottle and then the bartender screamed "AFUERA!" at us. We kept driving by this place, and it looked super cool so even with the mixed reviews decided to give it a shot. Would I go back again, possibly only for the BBQ if I was really craving BBQ in Vieques. Otherwise l would not return. We went in really wanting ribs, and they were out so we got chicken and brisket. We also got the dragon's egg, the yellowtail sashimi, and the bacon app. The bacon app came out and it was comically small. Very good flavor but the tiniest strips of bacon you've ever seen over a tiny little ball of arugula. The sushi was not good at all. I would not order sushi here again. The host was bothersome because she was not communicative about what was going on so we were definitely confused with if we were going to be seated or not. Once we finally were sat the vibes were great honestly. Server was friendly, place was crowded, lighting was great. One of our best meals in Vieques! Great drinks - they are known for their margaritas and they were delicious. This place has two kitchens - one for barbeque, and another for sushi. Normally I would shy away from places doing too many cuisines, but they were both delicious. I had the Box salad to start which was pretty good. I had a half rack of ribs - the waitress warned me it could be a wait, but it really wasn't any more than 20 minutes and definitely worth it! They have a vinegar based sauce that's sweet, kind of like a combination of Carolina and Texas style. We also had the Dragon's Egg and a tofu roll that were both delicious and very fresh. The tofu roll was unlike anything I've had before - it's mostly crispy rice on the outside, but all of the flavors were great. There is plenty of seating here for large parties, which is good because there aren't too many other restaurants near Esperanza that can seat that many people. Service was good, too. I've seen some other reviews saying the service was bad - that was not our experience. I will say that you are on an island, time moves slower here so be patient! read more

One of the meals was a thinly sliced piece of beef reportedly a rib eye steak and delivered overcooked due to its tiny size. We asked for a replacement but waited an hour and cancelled the order when there was no sign of it. Poorly prepared food should be corrected immediately without an inordinate wait time and the server inexplicably took offense that we complained. Have been to Vieques a number of times and I always go to Tin Box. The restaurant is huge and can get very busy. Servers do their best to get your food and drinks quickly but relax, you are on island time. The spicy margarita is a must. Ribs are great, tacos a second and sushi is satisfying. read more

The locals recommend this place so we went but honestly, we didn't enjoy it. The food was just ok, the fan was on high so it was cold in the evening, and the worst part was the service. Come here for happy hour! It's a ways off from Esperanza, I would not recommend walking if you're staying there. Happy hour $2 oysters, shrimp and clams are excellent! The backyard greens salad is great. There's a garden out back where they grow their own veggies so be sure to order a fresh salad while here. For dinner I had the barbecue trio (pulled pork, ribs, smoked chicken with corn bread and dirty rice.) Everything was fantastic!
