I couldn't stand long enough to cook a meal. Dr. Gussous looked at my MRI and CT scans and projected great confidence that a surgery would help me and I just decided to put myself in his hands. Best decision ever. Three months out and I can walk indefinitely with no discomfort. Just after the surgery, when I was recovering in the hospital, I was having some issues with my blood pressure dropping precipitously whenever I stood up. Dr. Gussous came personally to my bedside and spent about 40 minutes observing what was happening, having me stand and sit, having me walk a short distance in the hallway until he was satisfied that he understood what was going on. An amazing level of personal attention. Even the nurses were surprised. He also arranged for a week in acute rehab where I got a ton of support and instruction to see me through the rest of the recovery at home. I have done a lot of research about this procedure, including lurking around on Facebook groups where people share information about their experiences with this type of surgery. So I know that not everyone has as wonderful an outcome as I have had. I can only feel thankful to Dr. Gussous for performing an excellent surgery on me.

Long Version: I came to Dr. Wachhorst for a surgical consult in early 2021. I was 29 at the time and had been experiencing debilitating back pain since late 2019. I was an active person and found myself reduced from trail half marathons to ginger walks around the block. I was in a bad place. From the day I met him, Dr. Wachhorst instilled a sense of optimism and hope. He clearly and kindly walked me through my options, giving me his (very logical) perspective but never once pushing me towards one decision or another. I met with three other surgeons but felt most comfortable and confident with him to carry out my microdiscectomy. I would make this decision again a thousand times over. Dr. Wachhorst and his staff are highly competent and made me feel like I was in the best hands. After waking up from my surgery, my pain had entirely vanished. I was even able to go for a mile-long walk the day after. The delicate procedure left me with a 1" scar, which has healed beautifully and is barely detectable. I am now sitting here a little over a year after my procedure, still completely pain-free, writing this long overdue review. Thank you, Dr. Wachhorst, for giving me my life back. I have my first half-marathon in 4 years scheduled thanks to you, and I am just so grateful to be able to run, jump, and play again. You are very, very appreciated.

While he reached the same conclusion as the other doctor, the way he explained the results--with clarity, context, and genuine care--completely changed my outlook. He has supported me throughout recovery by monitoring my progress, adjusting treatment as needed, clearly explaining test results, and, when medically appropriate, advocating on my behalf. His office is responsive, efficient, and easy to work with, and I can access appointment summaries, prescriptions, and invoices through a secure online portal. The difference between his care and that of big providers is night and day. If you want a neurologist who combines medical expertise with compassion and insight, Dr. Ostashko is outstanding.

During the office exam he asked me many leading questions but I never felt like he listened to my answers. He seemed to want to convince me that I was stressed out. He also seemed to want to convince me that I have a very healthy brain based on a recent MRI and that he could find nothing physically wrong with me. He told me my issues were likely due to something called Functional Neurological Disorder (FND). He referred me to Stanford's website where I found out that this is the newest name for what was historically called Hysteria in women, AKA Conversion Disorder. See Stanford website: https://med.stanford.edu/psychiatry/patient_care/fnd.html I compare this to taking your car to the mechanic and after only checking the fluid levels in the engine, they tell you nothing is wrong with your car, you just need to sign up for driving lessons. Who would go to a mechanic with such a shallow understanding of a car? I don't believe I could have ever received an accurate diagnosis with this doctor. I went to another neurologist and as it turns out, I have a very serious and physical neurological disease, one that requires medication and medical attention.
