I happen to be driving across the country and was supposed to stay in Davenport, Iowa. But decided…read moreto drive just a little further and explore Iowa City. What a wonderful town Iowa City is. The downtown is very lively and extremely walkable. Iowa Chop House is located in downtown Iowa City. I went there for dinner on a Sunday and had the steak salad and asparagus. Both were excellent. I was served by Grace who was an excellent waitress and I enjoyed talking to her about the town and university. I was pleasantly surprised how good the food was. The only downside was the desert which I had a tiramisu which I'm spoiled and have better tiramisu before. However the steak salad & asparagus side was perfect. I visited only a day when graduation happened one week prior so the university students were away. The waitress explained normally downtown becomes very crowded during the semester. I will forever remember my brief visit to Iowa City. Thank you Iowa City

I can't remember our server's name but it started with a M. She was great! We got sweet potato fries and cheese curds for appetizers. The desserts were excellent. I really enjoyed the tiramisu and crème brûlée. We also got the chocolate cake and ice cream. The beer barn was cool but if you don't pour it right, you get a lot of foam. I feel like since we had a party of 7, it was challenging to get the steaks to our exact temperature but my mother in law got well done and it was cooked to medium.

My first choice off the menu ended up not being available as one of ingredients was out. So, my second choice, a chicken sandwich was just okay. While the chicken was tender, it was very salty - too salty. It needed more flavor and less salt. The fries were okay, nothing memorable and a little soggy. Our server was great and she's what made the experience enjoyable. She was really on top of it and made sure to keep our drinks full and that we had what we needed. The ambiance is pretty good at Vue; it is fun to be on the top of the hotel and see Iowa City and the University of Iowa campus down below.

We got a cheeseboard that really needed some honey or berry compute to brighten up the flavors of the cheese. And then it came with toasted baguette which typically is only slightly toasted to still give the chew of a bread. But this was toasted to the max so it was all crunch. At that point I would have rather eaten a cracker. Also, the cheese itself just wasn't anything special. Then I got a spinach salad which was really good. But I got the truffle fries that came out with ketchup so we asked for the aioli but it was SO gross! I love aioli and this was straight up mayo from a squeeze bottle with garlic. The rest of my table got salmon and they enjoyed it! We had a wonderful waiter and enjoyed the ambiance. And I think if Vue makes a few changes to their charcuterie board and gets rid of the awful aioli it will help!

It's only been open since 9/25, and it was recommended to us from the hotel where my wife and I were staying. We dined there on a Friday night around 7pm, and the place was probably 3/4 full. Like we often do when we travel, we bellied up to the bar and had dinner there. Most times the bartender will fill you in on the history of the place, make menu recommendations, etc... so it's a good place to gain intel when you know you're going to write a review. The bartenders there worked in tandem, but they were both friendly and more than competent, so we waited for nothing. My wife ordered the M&M Burger with a side of the Parmesan Truffle fries (a slight up charge). She ordered it medium rare, but it came out well done.. however, it was so damn good, we didn't end up sending it back. The fries were delicious as well. I ordered the Butternut Squash Ravioli, and it was also delicious. The menu description said it was served with a Brown Butter Sage sauce, but it was definitely more of a cream sauce. Again, it wound up being good, but it was what I expected. I would definitely recommend 401 Oak if you're in town and in the mood for something a bit more upscale and different.
