A Rochester staple for quality food. Beef tenderloin with whipped potatoes was excellent. Teres major steak was also nice and tender. Scallops were sweet and juicy. The shrimp appetizer was okay. It did not stand out in particular. I also did not care for the cheesecake as it tasted store bought. The ambiance is nice and it is pretty dark inside. Good service.

So I'm looking for a new place for fine dining. Heard from a friend about this place so here is my review. Located in an odd place in a residential neighborhood but hey that's okay. Stepped inside and it felt like I was stepping in a speakeasy. Very old fashion look .. lots of wood , dark but cozy. Bar and several booths on one side and in another room was the restaurant which I headed for. About 10 tables, Linen tablecloths, cozy fireplace yet the room has a very nice atmosphere. Servers were lined up along the wall ready to serve. Started off with a Cocktail which was nicely made. Picked steak for my meal and although the portion size wasn't that great the food was superb. Compliments to the Chef! The atmosphere was right up my alley for fine dining. Will visit again

My wife and I went to Rooney's for dinner last night for the first time. The atmosphere was very friendly and made us feel like we were regulars. Our servers Catherine and Matt were just super. The were very attentive and very nice. We never felt rushed and had one of the best dining experiences we ever had. The food was 5 star quality. I had the grilled salad and Divers Scallops. Everything was cooked to perfection, and the dishes when presented, looked likes work of art. The scallops were the best I ever had. My wife ordered Chicken French which was also delicious. Best restaurant I know of in the region. Quality selection, service, and enchanting setting. My wife and I visit about once per month to have good if the highest quality. The duck dishes and foie gras are my favorites each time. Dress nicely. read more

An exceptional dining experience. Definitely an upper scale restaurant. The staff was friendly and professional. They didn't hover, but at the same time we didn't have to wait too long for any part of our dinner. The server was at our table precisely at the end of our first bite to ask how it was. We shared escargot for an appetizer. Very good. Our dinner was expertly prepared and presented beautifully. My husband had the duck and I had the scallops. This chef knows what he's doing. I watch a lot of food shows on tv and these people know how to do it right. Gordon Ramsay would be pleased. The portion was perfect, there was actually room in my stomach for dessert. The ambiance was wonderful. The building is beautiful and historic inside and out. Don't think you're going to get away with a cheap meal, but you definitely get what you pay for here, it's worth every penny spent. Nicely done Rooney's, nicely done. read more

I went to a Rooneys with my partner and another couple for dinner this evening. I cannot even begin to express in the written word how disappointing the experience was. I am having difficulty sleeping because of the terrible dining experience I had! The first thing that caught my attention was the filthy, worn out carpeting. Looked as if it had been stampeded by cattle with muddy hooves over the course of decades. No wonder they keep the lighting so dim. Our waitress was loud and unprofessional. She engaged in a lengthy conversation, and then, finally took our drink order. The glass of Cabernet I ordered was like vinegar. My partner ordered a glass of Malbec and the first thing she asked me was, " does it smell ok?" Again, hers tasted like vinegar. As the night progressed, I became gradually more and more disappointed. I kept looking around at the other diners, and wondered if they were as disappointed as me. I ordered the shellfish paella, which was greasy, there was minimal seafood in it, what appeared to be frozen peas in it, and the rice tasted like Chinese fried rice. My friend ordered the steak friates, the supposed shoe string fries were like slivers, one needed tweezers to pick them up to eat! What a cruel joke! The paella was absolutely abysmal, and for the overly priced $36 was a disgrace. Shameful. Being new to the Rochester area, this is the absolute worst dining experience I have had yet. After being completely let down by my entree, I ordered vanilla ice cream for dessert in hopes to clear my palate from my zero rated shellfish paella, clear the grease from the rice out of my mouth, which, oh, by the way, had 2 shrimp in it, 4 nasty old mussels, and 2 scallops. You could've gotten fresher seafood from a can. The dessert arrived. My ice cream had a layer of ice on it. My friend ordered the apple dumpling, it was big, bulky and looked awful. The only thing that was decent about this restaurant was the brick walls, and leaving. In fact, if they have any brick left over, my suggestion is they board up the entrance so no other diners experience the big let down I did. My recommendation to all who even think of going there...spend your hard earned cash at Wegmans and make yourself, and friends dinner at home! Chances are, your carpet is clean, the wine is good, and the food fresh. read more

First and foremost, I have to call out their drink menu - while ultimately we came to enjoy a nice dinner, their cocktails were by far the biggest star of the show, with our entrees trailing very closely behind. If you like to partake in alcoholic beverages, I can say without a doubt these are the best cocktails I've had in Rochester, let alone all of Western NY, and this is even put up against drinks from the likes of Cure, Bitter Honey, and Avvino. I don't know if the bartender is just using higher quality spirits as a result of REDD being an upscale restaurant, but the "Burn after Reading", "Wise Guy", and Manhattan are some of the smoothest, most delicious, multi-noted drinks I've had in my entire life. If I don't come back for the food, I will absolutely be back for the drinks, because my goodness, abso-freaking-lutely phenomenal. My friends and I still talk about them now even weeks later. For our entrees we had the NY strip steak, grilled chicken, and a poached salmon, and every single piece of protein was cooked just perfectly. The steak was a beautiful warm medium rare, the chicken was glistening with succulent juiciness, and the poached salmon which I had for my main is one of the softest pieces of fish I've had in my life. It beautifully flaked away on a bed of potato puree and extremely well herbed and seasoned home fry-like potatoes that were ever-so-slightly just-undercooked intentionally to act as a perfect foil to the gorgeously soft puree and salmon itself. If I were to knock anything at all, the winter squash, turnip, and green vegetable medley that came with the chicken and steak was unfortunately far too undercooked for my liking, almost to the point of being completely raw, and while I appreciate letting vegetables sing and respect the beauty of raw, fresh vegetables, I was hoping for a little bit more of chef-y flair, seasoning, or even cooking of them. Besides that, the wait staff was simply top tier and were extremely inviting throughout the entire evening. We felt taken care of and checked up on often and they were the utmost professional. The only thing that was a true negative was the desserts -- if there's one thing I would NEVER order at REDD again, unfortunately our dessert missed the mark entirely. My best guess is due to lack of a pastry chef, but our chocolate tart was muddy and flavorless, not even tasting of chocolate, and the two homemade ice creams we tried - chocolate, and oatmeal followed in suit. We ultimately wrapped up at REDD but then ran down to Char Steak & Grill at the Strathallan for what ended up being a phenomenal dessert experience there. But overall, I have to say - I will definitely be back! The entrees were awesome, the cocktails were life-changing, and the ambience and wait staff were without fault. Beautiful dining room We went here because our son gave us a $100.00 gift certificate for this place. It was in a quiet almost kind of residential area, but there is a parking lot. The dining area was beautiful, perfect for a romantic night. We were celebrating Valentine's day. Our server was attentive and he answered my questions about the special for the night. I had crab cake for appetizers w/c came with 2 cakes. It was prepared well and the pepper sauce that came with it was delish. My husband ordered a cocktail and I got a sparkling water for drinks. For dinner, I got the special ,w/c was a beef rib (no bone )with a creole rub. The beef was very tender but a bit spicy for my taste so my hubby took it instead and he enjoyed it. I got his seafood stew dinner. It came wit 2 pcs. each of shrimps, scallops, monkfish and clams. Everything was cooked perfectly. I especially enjoyed the fish. For dessert, we got a chocolate mousse, so light and not too sweet. We enjoyed our dinner and the ambiance and the service. Classic, Gourmet Excellent service with staff tag teaming to make sure everything was taken care of--and it was. Appetizers: Crab Cake w black bean salad, very moist with way more crab than filler. Plantain Crusted Shrimp, the best shrimp app ever (also available as a meal). Entrees: Mixed Grill served w tenderloin cooked perfectly, medium rare as requested. Salmon on bed of lentils over the creamiest pureed cauliflower, a new preparation, came together beautifully. Top notch wine list and good selection by the glass. Wow! Based on Trip Advisor reviews, we decided to come here for our anniversary. We're so glad we did. We had the escargot which were on mushroom caps. Yummy. I'm glad there was bread to soak up all the wonderful sauce. My wife had scallops, which were some of the largest sea scallops I have seen. Cooked to perfection. My duck was relatively lean for duck. Every bite was a pleasure. The house wines were fine. I just wish we had room for dessert. The decor is pleasantly subdued with lighting to go with it. Perfect I think this is one of the best restaurants in Rochester. Do not miss it if you are in Rochester. They have a very nice menu and a wine list. The food was extraordinary. I had a steak which was very well prepared, delicious, juicy and tender. The escargot with mushroom was very good. You can try the crab cake as well. We had very good wines. They have a large variety of world wines. The atmosphere is very good. The paintings on the wall, the table design is lovely. Love this venue for any type of reason. Fine Dining in an Intimate Setting As a former resident of Rochester, it is always nice to return to familiar territory. Don't let the location fool you. This is one of the best restaurants in the area. It is located in an old store front in the old south wedge area of the city. Great food and staff add to a subdued elegance. Even though the restaurant was full, I was able to reserve a table for 6 just a few hours prior to the requested time. Very Outstanding! Met lots of family in town for a wedding. Spent several hours reading reviews to select the perfect restaurant for the day after the wedding for 15 of us to dine together. This was the perfect place. Every single person in our party of 15 commented on how wonderful their meal was. Whether scallops, steak, duck or something else the food was incredible. Everything was great right from the start. The staff were super friendly and professional. The bar area is separate from the dining room and has this nice polished wood vibe with shelves stocked up nicely. The dining room gives off a cozy old-school feel with a fireplace and exposed brick that makes it really inviting. The food was awesome, and the portions were just right. This place has gone down hill ever since the chef has gone mentally ill. The food simply is not worth the price. The quality of the food is lacking and the food is not fresh. I could not believe my eyes the night I was dinning because the chef came out to the dinning room and accosted a couple discussing politics. This man certainly scared that couple away and I am defiantly not going back. read more

I went here with my daughter as my treat for her and she couldn't be happier. It is a quiet, small dining area that is great for dinner. The food was amazing and the service was good. The presentation and quality of the food is beyond what you see from other establishment. We had a marinated beet salad and the rack of lamb. It was pricey, but worth it. read more
