My family and I stumbled on the shop on a recent visit to Newport, and I'm so glad we did. First, there's all kinds of really lovely decorative items made out of wonderfully polished and cut rocks. And second, we fell in love with Rooster! What a funny, interesting guy! I wanted to purchase an item, but didn't realize they only took cash. Because we were leaving town, I wasn't able to come back to pick up the item so I mailed a check when I returned home. It arrived today well packaged and in perfect condition. I love it! The Oregon coast is a hotspot year round for rock collectors, especially those hunting agates and jasper in reds, greens and blues. Rooster's Rocks is one of a handful of places to get all of those locally sourced rocks, polished and unpolished for those who tumble their own, as well as spectacular rocks and crystals from all over the world. My nephews love spending time in here looking through all the baskets of rocks, sorted by size and color and kind, holding them up to the light, and hearing about where they're from. The owner loves rocks and loves to talk about rocks. He showed them miniature "caves" in rocks that can only be seen through a magnifying glass and explained how certain rocks are formed, found, cut, polished, etc. He also creates pieces for the home. Beautiful and elaborate wind chimes and pieces to hang in a window -- as colorful and brilliant as glass. The selection is incredible! Our visit to Roosters Rocks was a highlight of my long weekend on the Oregon coast! You couldn't point to a rock or stone that Rooster didn't have an entire back story on. I didn't know a rock store could be so interesting, but we spent at least an hour there! Rooster told us how he got started in the business, how all of his tools worked...really anything we wanted to know, he was so easy to talk to and I enjoyed learning it all. It makes me so happy to see someone so passionate in their work. There were so many interesting pieces, both locally sourced and from all over the world. I'm a local and I stopped in with my grandkids. The elderly gentleman in the shop clearly does not like kids.

I wish I could give this place zero stars. I witnessed the corpulent and elderly owner scream at a six year old girl for touching some polished agate wind chimes hanging on his door. I watched the little girl touch a couple of the chimes, and a fat red-faced old man came storming out screaming about how they were fragile and she was being inappropriate. Buddy, wind chimes should be designed to clang together, that's what they do. Secondly, if they are so precious take them inside and don't leave them within a child's reach in the Newport Oregon wind. Loser. Don't waste your time at this shop. Skip it, and instead go next-door to Jac Genovese. He is a kind and much more original artist than the rooster quack next-door. read more

If you want to get your rocks of...come here!!! (oh dear me) Beautiful collections of earth's gems. I know basically nothing about rocks; all I could see was beautiful stones. Sooooo many to pick from. I picked two for him to drill a hole so I could put them on a long waxed cord and wear them (very Ralph Lauren-ish). It took me over 1/2 hour of concentration and then I just eeny meeny miney moe'd it. It didn't matter...so many beautiful polished stones that are beautiful to wear just by themselves.. He is quite knowledgeable, OF COURSE. He will give you a dissertation if you will. I happened upon this place and I am happy I did. read more

Went to the coast with my family. my boyfriend, daughter and I were all wearing masks but my three year old son was not as he is not required because he is under 5. When we entered the shop we were immediately yelled at that my son needed to be Wearing a mask, I informed him of my sons age and he simply said "I dont care, he needs to be wearing a mask." A fantastic place for rock and mineral lovers. The owner will justifiably tell your children to look with their eyes, but if they are well-behaved he might share his tales of rock polishing and collecting. His inventory is a good blend between local and international stones, and we could have spent twice as long in his store. We visited this shop a couple of years ago and had a great experience. Stopped in today and had the absolute worst shopping experience of my life. We browsed and started filing up a basket with items to purchase. The man, I assume the owner, clearly misconstrued something we said and took an instant dislike to us. He said, and I quote " If you're not going to buy anything then I'm going to get back to what I was doing." I own a retail store and may not like everyone that walks through the door but I would never say that to a potential customer! I was appalled. At that point I set down my basket of items that I was intending to buy and left. I had been referring people to this business for the past 2 years. Not any more. I want to visit Roosters Rocks on my vacation to the Oregon Coast. Picked Newport specifically so I could visit thus shop. Being an avid collector of gemstones from all over the world I was surprised to come across a Bumble Bee jasper sphere. It was on display with the rest of his spheres in the middle of his shop. I have several specimens of my own and I know how rare this stone is. It comes from one volcano in Indonesia and it is exceptionally dangerous to mine and is getting scarce. I picked it up and said, wow. The proprietor of the store, in front of a room full of other customers, very rudely told me he would rather I not touch his stone and to please put it down. I said fine, and now I will leave as well. He went on to tell me what is was made of. I already knew everything, if not more about it. If he didn't want anyone to touch it why was out on display where anyone could touch it. Very poor customer relationship skills to say the least. So I went to another nearby shop, the Pirates Cove and spent several hundreds of dollars on their offerings of smokey quartz, amethyst, kyanite, a beautiful petrified wood, and a wonderful opalized fossel. I will definalty be back, however, I will never set foot inside Roosters Rocks again. You lost an excellent potential customer for life. read more

I visited this quaint little village and found a diamond in the rough. The wind chimes I purchased have been wimsycal beyond anything you have ever heard. The piece of driftwood that they are connected to is also a converation piece as it has grown into itself. These chimes carry my mnd away from everyday life an koas and bring a sense of peace to the mind. The store itself boasts a mind refreshing, eye catching, ear pleasing peace. read more
