Looking for a coffee and dropped in here. Glad we did. I just had a drip coffee which was good and the wife enjoyed her chai tea latte. The shop has some cute stuff we checked out while waiting for coffee. The tables over looking the bay were fantastic. Bring your sunglasses. The glare off the water is strong. This place was suggested to me because it was often overlooked but was told they had amazing ice cream. Well it's true, they had amazing hand dipped ice cream. The chocolate was really high quality and thick, it wasn't like biting into a rock once the chocolate set on the cold ice cream and the Oreos were a nice touch. Only concern would be that staff don't use gloves and were wearing lots of rings, otherwise would recommend. read more

Price point too high, nickel and dime add ons like $1 more for light ice, 0.25 cc transaction fee, no local discount (many restaurants give 10% discount to locals, as we are a summertime destination spot with tourist pricing on top of Covid and post Covid inflation). Drinks are good, but $5.50 for a 12 oz Italian soda that is torani syrup, a little canned 'whipped cream' and seltzer packed with ice (so actually 8oz) is about double what a few other coffee places in town charge. I made my displeasure known to the staff. Obviously they don't set the pricing. Staff, to their credit, took my grousing with courtesy and aplomb, credit to them. Was windy and chilly on October early afternoon (55-60 degrees with wind chill on the bay) so I closed the deck door where we were inside. We were only customers there. Staff reopened it and stated it must remain ope because the door latch was broken and might blow open damaging the door further. With the nickel and diming, ownership can get a $50 door knob. "Barista" had no idea what decaf was and tried to guess... "Oh, is that like a shot of espresso in milk?". They only had 12oz mugs. I wanted 16oz of coffee so he was going to charge me for another full cup. He seemed to not know what he was doing. Sad. This place used to be better but now focuses on alcohol and retail. read more

But the real selling point is the seating area overlooking the bay and sea lion docks. We were visiting Newport and returned to Bayscapes to purchase a wooden replica sailboat that we'd seen earlier through the window. Upon entering the store, we were told we couldn't bring our 17 lb dog in with us. The clerk (I believe her name was Linda/Melinda (hard to hear with her mask) was so rude and abrupt about not allowing our well behaved pet to enter that we just left the store completely hurt and surprised with her behavior in such a friendly town. Everyone else in Newport has been so friendly and hospitable that we were in total shock. She lost out on a great sale. ("mistake, big mistake, I have to go shopping now") Maybe she was having a bad day, but I'll always remember that store and I'll never return. read more

I cried over my purchase after less than three days of owning it because the prongs were not secured tightly, and the main stone fell out (larimar). I'm DEVASTATED. I bought it as a promise ring for my rededication to my recovery. I live in Seattle, so there's no way to exchange it easily, or without hassle. I know where not to go now when visiting. I have found it important to check the lowest ratings on a place before I start my own review. And if what I find matches my experience, no matter how old the reviews I am reading are, then I know they are genuine. And with that said, be advised of the older gentleman working there. My first couple of visits after being displaced from the echo mountain fires was on the surface friendly enough. But on my 3rd visit, that's when I started becoming uncomfortable with going here, especially by one of the girls working in the cafe. I was made to feel like she didn't want to serve me. Then with the 4th visit today, I couldn't find anyone working in the cafe, and had to wait for the older gentleman working there to slowly finish a transaction in the gallery before I could ask if anyone was making coffee, which he came over and did himself. And if the long wait wasn't enough, it was like he was even slower at making the coffee. Questions: Who takes a lunch break an hour after opening to leave no one to make coffee? This is one of the coffee houses/touristy shops on Newport's Bay Blvd -- souvineers, snacks, a cup to go... We stopped in because of their sign out front for hand-dipped ice cream bars. And it's perfectly true -- they have ice cream bars on sticks that they dip into a thick and yummy chocolate coating. They provide a drop-catcher -- a little cardboard shield to catch the warm chocolate and keep you from mussing your clean clothes -- plus napkins. It's very tasty, (ice milk, but not premium ice cream) but they seriously skimp on the size of the ice cream bar. It's smaller than a standard grocery store or ice-cream truck treat by about 40-50%, so it's hard not to feel cheated. If they'd spring for the additional 4-6cents worth of ice cream and chocolate -- but what was it Forest Gump's mother always said? cheap is as cheap does????. I think they are trying to go the theme-park route and charge more for far less because you're a bit of a captive audience -- the whole Bayfront area has that kind of Disney Park-ish atmosphere. Which, again, is fine -- but giving less value for more money is not my idea of a day at the park. So 2 stars is the best I can give them.... I'll just stop at Fred Meyer and get a Fudge-sickle. My roommate and I drove to Newport to look for a coffee shop to study by the beach because it was a nice day. We stumbled upon dockside and there was an outdoor and indoor seating area with tables. +: the two ladies that worked there were very nice and sweet outdoor and indoor area to sit at seems like not a lot of people know of this place great views of the bay and seals probably not a place to be studying at if you like silence (seal noises, ahah) -: nothing! read more

All the other reviews on here are outdated, and the snobby woman that they mentioned must not work here anymore. I was greeted politely, immediately served, helped and then enjoyed the view. Also, as you can see from the picture I posted of the lady making my ice cream bar, it is by no means small. I am not sure what kind of ice cream bar the other reviewer is buying, but these are huge. The ice cream is ice cream, and the chocolate is delicious. It was so big I had to share with a member of my party because I couldn't finish it. Coffee was good and the service was fast. We came here for iced coffee and iced tea. There is also a little gift shop which I did not peruse. There is outdoor seating as well as indoor and glass-covered patio. It features a lovely view of the bay, and I watched some people not too far away hauling up some enormous crabs. The staff was accommodating and friendly, and the ambiance peaceful. I am given to understand that there are usually some sea lions about, but one of my companions was glad they were absent during our visit.. She says they are loud and smelly, so I guess I am glad we arrived while they were taking a break from their jobs attracting tourists. Altogether, a lovely place to rest from a day of beachcombing. read more

WILL NEVER even enter in this building again! The older man running the store came after me while I was drinking my coffee to tell me "they don't let outside drinks in!" I said "okay I'll go." He chased me out stating "the sign says we don't let drinks in!" I explained that my friends were also there having coffee in the cafe so I was meeting them!" He repeated himself at this point, to our friends who were patrons of his coffee shop/store. He was a total jerk and other shops agreed that they "hear complaints about him all the time." Rude and unwelcoming. My 3 year old and I came in to go to the cafe and apparently went into the wrong entrance. The clerk immediately demanded I hand over my *closed* water bottle and when I explained we were just going to the cafe rudely asserted that the cafe was closed anyway, just as the lights were going out. Someone call the Navy because I found their SEALS! The proprietress tried to tell me the seals were 'sea lions,' but I think she was wrong. The seals are the real stars of the show here; coffee was okay, if a little expensive. Charged me extra for my extra flavor shots. That said, the owners are on site and quite nice, and run a gift shop, too. They're willing to tell you whatever you need to know about Newport. The only good item in the gift shop was a bell. It was forged by a local. I'd have bought it--$250 is pocket money for a good bell--but it was already sold. read more

My husband asked to used the restroom and the woman at the counter directed him to a public restroom across the street and down the block. He went there while i waited. While we were drinking our coffee i noticed another customer given a key & directed to their restroom!!??!! Why did they sendy husband down the street? (we're quite clean and normal looking) Later I asked for the key and was told by a surly young woman that the restroom was for coffee drinkers only. I had to show her my cup to get the key. It's hard to rate this place, as it's a coffee shop, ice cream and snack bar, art gallery, home decor, jewelry and nicknack shop all in one. They really don't do anything particularly well. Most of what you see, in the shop, is imported. Granted, the prices are competitive. When I'm on vacation, I don't purchase stuff I can find online, or in any store anywhere because it's all coming from Asia. I look for locally crafted goods. They do have some regional-local photograph prints. The jewelry was nice, and I believe that was at least regionally created. The coffee shop/snack bar is a fail. They are trying to be a fully functioning coffee shop, with mochas, lattes, etc. I didn't seem them make my drink, but it tasted exactly like the flavored powder "lattes" and "mochas" you get at any convenience store. In other words...I just paid five bucks for powder mix and water. If it isn't what it tastes like, I have no idea what they are doing wrong. It's possible they don't know how to correctly heat non-dairy milks, as I did ask for coconut milk. I don't like a sour tummy, so no cow-milk for me. I wasn't the only one saying the latte's were nasty. One of our party ordered plain decaf. She wasn't impressed with that. The other's all ordered latte's. Every one of us found the coffee unpalatable. If you pay with a card, it's a minimum charge of five dollars, and you have to walk back into the gift shopping area to run it, as they are not equipped at the coffee shop. They have a beautiful view of the bay in the back seating area. It is in strong need of updating. The window seals just look dingy, which may only need cleaned. The outside sunshades are covered in seagull dooky. The four or five small tables and seats are all old. This can be considered part of the charm. There are rain chains in the corner, for sale. Where I was really put off: we shopped their gift area, we made purchases and paid for crappy drinks, and when I asked about a bathroom, they refused me. I understand no bathroom for non-customers, but I was a customer...note "was". I won't be back. read more

This is a hodge podge gift shop-cum-coffeeshop. I wimped out and got a latte instead of my usual pure doppio (as I am wont to do when it's a brand new place). The thing I liked about the lady is that she washed her hands right after taking my money before making my coffee. YUP, cleanliness does impress me. Otherwise, the latte was ok. A bit on the lukewarmer than I'd like side, temperature wise. And, I dunno, the espresso seemed weak. Oh well, I didn't have high expectations so whatevs. read more

We pulled into Newport and stopped in here. As we walked towards the back patio, I could hear a bunch of aquarium type sounds which I thought was strange of them to pipe in so loudly, but my kids soon informed me that the dock behind the place was covered by barking sea lions. We watched the seals with fascination, and enjoyed our coffees, and a couple of muffins. We were informed that the muffins were "made yesterday by a woman named Katy." A mix of art/craft, as well as a mix of coffee bar/ice cream counter. And, overall, it works. Bayscapes appears to have worked to improve its focus on customers, as our experience was wonderfully pleasant and the staff were helpful and conscientious. It took a bit more time than we expected, as each glass of ice tea was freshly brewed for us before being iced down, and that said, it was delicious. Best element of the visit was bieng able to sit out in their yaquina Bay overlook seating area and watch the fleet, the sea lions and numerous sea birds, listen to the locals chat about their doings, and appreciate all that was good on a warm and pleasant afternoon. I hope our experience is replicable for others...we will be back, for sure. read more

My wife and I bought an anchor weather barometer that hangs on a wall on July 3rd. We live in Florida, we brought it all the way home to find one of the ends of the anchor was missing a piece. We went back in august flew this thing all....... the way back. went into the store and ask the owner to return it. he refused and said" There is no return policy. We said how about a store credit." he said oh NO!.. We were shocked, he did not even try to make us happy. We paid $60.00 for this item and to make things worse we seen the same thing by accident at the Flying Dutchman winery at devils punch bowl. What ever you do if you see something in his store look around the area and most likely you;ll find it cheaper. If you do buy something from him you better make sure its in good shape check the box before you leave. Good luck. read more

Most unfriendly and unprofessional business in Newport! Went in to get coffee with my daughter and we waited about 5 minutes to be helped. The first thing out of the old guys mouth behind the counter was " No outside food or drink allowed!" As he was referring to my half eaten ice cream cone.I told him I guess he does not want our business and that is fine with me. If you want to treat customers that way you won't be in business. From the looks of other reviews looks like it won't be long. I guess people aren't allowed to get coffee there to go along with their other food. This place is now called Bayscapes, but I still think of it as Dockside. It's a gift shop on the left and a coffee shop on the right. The very first establishment I visited when moving here 3 years ago. Very nice staff, all of them. Great coffee drinks. Nice enclosed deck to view the nearby sea lions and Yaquina Bay. Good, clean spot. Staff was very friendly and I hate to say anything negative, but I think coffee making was not their first calling. It took three tries at ordering before we finally got it initially figured out but when I actually got my drink it was iced instead of blended, which at that point I was over correcting it. Also, like a previous post mentioned, I think I too got the bottom of the batch because this may have been one of the worst coffees I've ever had. Maybe it's just that it was the end of the day or something, but next time I'll probably try somewhere else. read more

We stopped in with our kids today and had the nicest time. Explored the beautiful gallery (be careful, don't let the kids break anything). In the gallery is a little coffee shop with snacks and outdoor seating. While sitting outdoors with our hot chocolate, we watched the sea lions. This coffee shop had been a favorite for my group of friends for years. We visit a beach house several times a year for a week at a time and almost daily on our trip we would visit this coffee shop. They have a great deck that looks over where the seals lie and it's entertaining to watch them and the coffee was never amazing but good enough. So for years we have been devote customers to this coffee shop, have always looked forward to visiting there and never had a bad experience. Over the new year of 2011 we visited again. Three of us walked in quietly together, I stayed at the coffee bar to order, and my two friends went to use their restroom before getting coffee. A lady saw us all walk in together and even heard my friends say, "I need to use the restroom before coffee." I stood at the counter waiting to order for minutes while the two workers, an older woman and man, finished their personal conversation. While I was waiting, my friends were waiting at the restroom and after minutes eventually asked for a key. The man rudely replied, "Restrooms are only for our coffee customers! I'm so f***ing sick of everyone coming in here to use our restrooms!" My friend explained that we were all there to get coffee but the two workers kept going off about how they are so fed up with "these people" and kept cursing at my friends. When we tried explaining to them that we always come here and just wanted to use the restroom before ordering coffee, they just glared at us and kept rudely talking about us and cursing while we were right there. We had done nothing except walk in and wait for service and they treated us like this! We explained ourselves and they never apologized or tried to gain back our service. If you are looking to be treated like crap while sipping on mediocre coffee, this is your place! If you want a good experience, a GREAT coffee shop is just a block down the road called The Coffee House at 156 Southwest Bay Boulevard, Newport, OR. They have amazing customer service, great coffee and food that is to die for. And the view is just as good as the other place :) read more
