11.24.23 huge mineral rocks displayed outside
    May A.

Rock Shop [Yachats OR] I don't collect rocks but I've purchased a few stones occasionally when I see something pretty. This shop is one of the best ones I've been in. I've never seen so many rocks, gems and mineral collection under one roof, wall to wall display. The aisles neatly arranged (agates, fossils, crystals, geodes, gems and semi precious stones). Some of the huge rocks in front of the store were marked sold like the 293-lbs Rose Quartz Flame that sold for $4,995... okaaaaay. I chose a jade stone from one of the clear containers, an ornamental nephrite jade (I presume from Afghanistan). I know very little about rocks. Price varied from different sizes and weight. We also purchased some pretty stones (on the cheaper side) for my daughter's fish tank LoL. We were greeted by the friendly shop dog, Zoose. The shop is ran by a husband and wife team. Very cool shop. Review #3250

A Superior rock shop right in the village. I do collect but I only want the very unusual. I found five pieces and the owner gave me a overall reduction. I could have spent 200 plus easily. He had the many unusual items. He had at least 3 items over 15,000 each and a sold tag on a 5000.00 item. This place is a collectors heaven. And he sells on line. This could be a new source for me. I met him and his wife. She packed my buys like I was leaving the country. Thank you.

Large, diverse selection of stones and gems at a variety of price points and a very knowledgeable staff. Worth the drive from Florence just to visit this place! Love browsing the selection and seeing what new and different gems are on their shelves each time I visit.

They also have a nice selection of beads and jewelry though if that's more your thing. The shop is a little small and walkways are narrow, so I always feel like I have to be extra careful not to knock anything over while walking through it, but after enough visits I think I have finally got it down. If there are a lot of people already inside looking around, I'd say it's maybe best to wait for it to clear out a little bit. Just to be safe. Plus you can take that time to look at what they have on display outside. My first couple visits, that were a few months apart, I didn't really notice much difference in stock. I can see it better now though, because I take more time looking at EVERYTHING each time I'm there. They always have the same stuff in stock, like Clear Quartz for example, but now that I pay more attention I can tell it's always new, unique pieces that weren't there before. This goes for the other staple crystals/rocks/fossils they sell as well. I like this because I always wait for a piece to really stand out to me before buying to add to my collection. My favorite part of this shop is that they have a range of items when it comes to expense. They have larger, more expensive pieces as well as smaller ones that are more affordable (what I always go for). Secondly, I love that they have so many NATURAL pieces. I actually prefer the dings, chips, dirt, "flaws" in my crystals. Of course those aren't the only options, just what I tend to go for and I really appreciate that these pieces are available here as well. Lastly, both the woman and man I've met working here are lovely. They even slip in a couple small gifts occasionally. I'm obviously a big fan and intend on continuing stop by when I'm around the area, but I'd also recommend this shop to others, if this sort of thing interests you and you are already passing through.

I'm not sure what's happening with this business, but my experience with customer service was poor…read more I don't have a lot of jewelry, but I aspire to. I'm not a wealthy person and I strive for quality at the best price possible. Recently I lost a 2 carat natural diamond from my wedding ring. I replaced it with a fabulous, spectacular-looking lab-grown diamond after spending hours vetting stones and discussing the process with experts. I bought the stone from an online wholesaler and got an incredible deal. We're relatively new to this area, and I worked with an excellent jeweler in Lincoln City a couple of years ago. The work was outstanding but the customer service was meh. I wanted to try someplace else. My husband went to SJ to sell some gold and liked Stewart, the owner. We decided to use SJ to restructure and rebuild my ring with the new stone. Not a huge project but highly significant in my 25 year marriage. Our first meeting with Stewart was good. I liked him, he was engaging, and I hoped I could build a relationship with him as I had with the guy who did all our work when we lived in CA. Stewart told me the ring would take 4 weeks. I didn't question it. Fast forward four weeks. Stewart called me and said his jeweler had gone on vacation and it was going to take longer. Fine. No problem. Good things are worth waiting for, right? I decided to pay the bill at that time and did it electronically with Stewart directly. It was nearly a thousand dollars. Stewart told me he was personally going to pick my ring up from the jeweler, that it was done, and he'd have it ready the following Monday. We called Monday. When I spoke to the nice young woman on the phone, she told me Stewart wasn't in and she knew nothing about the ring. Hmmm. We requested a call back which came the following day. Stewart told me he had an "old, slow" jeweler and the ring wasn't done. He then said I could pick it up at his Florence store the next day by 11. Hubby called before we made the 60 mile round trip. He was told the ring was done and to come get it. We drove down at noon. We walked in and saw Stewart and his employee chatting. No one greeted us, and we waited about five minutes before anyone spoke to us. Oops. Ring is not done. Sorry! Come back in 45 minutes. I had a bunch of people coming for the holiday. To say I was on a tight schedule would be to put it mildly. Nonetheless, we went, had lunch and came back in an hour and a half. Ring was not done. No one even acknowledged our presence, and we waited while Stewart spent 20 minutes with another several customers. I was getting heated by this point. By the time we left, which was 4 hours after we were told the ring was done, I had no desire to work with Stewart again. We paid for an appraisal and I had to remind him to do it. We waited for that too. He then told me I owed him the sum I'd already paid to him, on the phone three days before. When I reminded him of that, he hesitated and then said "Oh. That was you?" Like he had no clue who I was. I hate having my time wasted in a customer service setting--in any customer service encounter, really--but particularly when I know I'll have a decent amount of business in the future and that I'm an excellent referring client. Also this was a big deal for us. Obviously not to Stewart. We had another ring resized and cleaned etc. at the same time as I dropped off my wedding ring. Although I was told the ring was ready, it was not at the Florence store when we went to pick it up with my wedding ring. It was included in the money I paid in advance. Stewart told me that he'd left it at the Newport store. Several days later I came to the Newport store (40 mile round trip) and guess what? It wasn't there either. All told, I tried to get my second ring four times before it was eventually located. Of course, I was told by the clueless salespeople that I owed 144.00 for the work. Unbelievable. I will NEVER patronize SJ Custom Jeweler's again. It's ironic that when you look at their site they claim to "LOVE" their customers. Yeah. No. I've struggled to understand the behavior, and I conclude they deal with a lot of seniors. As a rule, we can be a vulnerable demographic with more money. I hate to think a small business would exploit that.

They took detailed photos of the ring before, which were included on the estimate and receipt, and gave a clear estimate of what to expect. I wanted to have it appraised for insurance). I don't think she knew that I brought the ring in a year or two earlier to have the gem identified (it was an inherited ring and we didn't know what the gem was). And I was told at the time that it was a high quality gem with high quality diamonds on it. She offered to buy it on the spot for $388. I politely declined knowing that the ring was likely worth a lot more. I finally had it appraised and the replacement value is off the charts. I know that replacement/insurance value is not equal to a purchase/selling price AT ALL, but the gold alone is worth 10x what they offered me. So shady. I would never go back to Olufson after this. Moral of the story: Always ALWAYS get a second opinion. Never sell jewelry on the spot. And maybe avoid Olufson.

Since I couldn't find how to edit my existing review, I submit my edited and updated review here:…read more HIGHLY recommended. Walked in to this cute little jewelry store and in less than 15 minutes, I'd found the perfect engagement ring, a beautiful vintage white gold filigree and diamond, for my fiancee. Surprised (pleasantly) at the price. Spoke with Mike Anderson on that day and on future days, and the man is simply honest, straightforward, pleasant, capable and deeply knowing of his business. His fee for adjusting the ring size, also surprisingly affordable. I cannot, cannot recommend this place and this man highly enough. UPDATE: I returned a couple months later, after the above, to Mike Anderson to talk about wedding bands. He sized me, showed me different styles and fits, and we quickly got to exactly what I was looking for. Three or so days later, he called, had found a vintage ring that was exactly for me (vintage / estate, 14k white gold, comfort fit). It was sized and refitted for me, and I now have my perfect, beautiful, shining wedding band for my coming nuptials. Again, I was quite pleasantly surprised at the cost to me. Affordable! Most recently, as my fiancee and I just happened to be passing his store, we ventured in to see if Mike could perform the "hat-trick" of wordly miracles. We were in the store, total, for perhaps 45 minutes, but even before that much time had passed, he'd found her band for us. This time the band was already on site. Just having started his inventory search, and with another, older couple patiently waiting, he asked from the back of his store, "are you interested in an antique?" We enthusiastically answered Yes! He brought out the ring for her. A delicate, beautiful, decoratively engraved 18k white gold vintage band...one that matched perfectly her engagement ring. The wedding band was slightly snug on her, so he offered to have the ring stretched slightly--something I hadn't even known was possible. Since I was sensitive to price and wanted to know but did not want to discuss with fiancee present, a couple of winks between us and he understood. He offered to inquire with his jeweler / craftsman about the feasibility of the stretch, then told me he'd call me on Sunday with the result after conference with his crafter. He dutifully called me on Sunday. I missed the call. He kindly gave me the price (once again, surprisingly affordable), knew enough implicitly to leave the ring with crafter (despite not reaching me directly) and await official agreement as well my official purchase when we spoke next. This is the kind of business we are talking about. In all appearances and experience with him, honor and skill and care are all rolled into one with this Mike Anderson. Never in my life did I dare dream of such an easy, fortuitious, even providential experience in finding and procuring all three of the most vital material elements of a holy union. God bless Mike Anderson, along with much gratitude from me. He indeed performed the hat-trick.
