Anything historically H-Town I'm instantly giving 5 STARS!!! I've always wanted to take my son here to shoot around and work on his game and we finally had the chance the other day! It was a beautiful day out. Got there in the early afternoon. There were some people taking pics, but no one playing basketball. There were seats and benches to take breaks on and some areas that had shade. The court had zero shade so we were hot out there; it was mid-October! More like "Hotober" . One thing that made me sad was all the trash on the ground. So much littering in such a beautiful space. My Dad went around and picked up ALL the trash. Wish people would take care of our City. Overall had such a great time and made memories for a lifetime. I love my City! read more

Very cute. Root Memorial Square is sitting in the center of a circle. The circle is formed by a few skyscrapers. The sunken basketball court looks intriguing. Because the tall walls can help users bounce the balls wherever they want it to be. This is not a scientific experiment or school project. But it is symmetrically cute. I can't put my hands on the Root Memorial Square. I stared at the court as a young man practicing his kicks on a soccer ball against one side of wall. Then, he switched to be another person to defend his imaginary goal. I was just passing by on the way to Discovery Green. I purposely returned the same way to see the court again. This time is a young couple playing basketball tossing game with a kid. Doesn't matter how the ball bounce to, it always bounces back to the man how bounced the ball in the first place. Now, I wonder. Would that be another use, like filled with water to be a pool, ping pong game, tennis ball dodge game, remote control car racing or just stay there to be a square. Stopped by here yesterday to get some cardio in. I ended up playing a pick up game with some guys on the opposite end of the court. The rims are a little loose, but the goals and court are in pretty good condition. If you're not comfortable with street ball crowds, this may not be the best place for you to come. There were a few kids playing on the opposite end, but I probably would take my kids to a more child-friendly park. This court is close to my place, so I'll be back in the future. Hopefully it won't be as crowded on my next visit. read more

Root Memorial Square - Dunk contest - Parks Near Me - Houston, Texas

Small, one-block park in Downtown Houston, across from the Toyota Center. Some of the surrounding area isn't the very best but this little park is surrounded by new development and a great little space. My favorite part is the Lanterns which light up and night, though I have never seen that. There are basketball hoops, green space and A few park benches to sit on. Cool space to see some more of Houston's cook art scene. read more

In the outdoors was where I spent most of my days, Chillin' out maxin' relaxin' all cool, Watching the fellas shootin some b-ball outside of the Toyota Ctr. When a couple of homeless guys, who were up to no good, Start'd pee'n in the Neighborhood. I apologize for the terrible parody of the Fresh prince of Bel-air theme song. This is a small park covering one downtown block, across the way from The Toyota Center. You can catch a good game of street b-ball. I enjoy a picnic lunch here, usually with a co-worker. There is a section (northwest corner) that the urine smell is unbearable. Makes me sick to my stomach. I think homeless people use this area to sleep at night and as an outdoor restroom. Avoid it at all costs. It's safe to enjoy the Heritage lanterns. read more

Houston has another outdoor gem I stumbled across during my night bike ride... This park area is an outdoor basketball court that is well established across from the Toyota Center... If you are looking to play some ball outside downtown this would be the place... If you like riding your bike and making stops to include other activities put this on your list... The location it's self is pretty awsome and a must visit... read more

Root Memorial Square - Parks Near Me - Houston, Texas

This "park" is located across Toyota Center. There are steps leading down to the open basketball court. It is a large, open area in which you can also sit on the periphery steps and watch a basketball game or two. At the corner of the park, there are five Heritage lanterns that light up at night. They vary in height but are very beautiful when lit. It's a nice place to take fun, casual pictures. The colors of the lights change at regular intervals and brings about a beautiful effect. There's really not much to this park except for the basketball court which is set below street level. Really more for those wanting to get a game or two in while in the area. read more

4 stars because in a pretty awesome location. You can see the skyline and its right across the Toyota center!! COOL, even tho I'm not a rocket fan. Well first thing is first, this place is not for kids, intense basketball players reside here. They have water fountains which is pretty cool and it's just a cool park in all. You can easily get here from the metro. read more
